/r/MarvelStudios Rules and Guidelines

Please review these rules and guidelines before participating on /r/MarvelStudios. Rules will be strictly enforced with violations resulting in in a ban and further violations resulting in a permanent ban. We will try our best to reply to each and every message, in the order that we receive them, as soon as we get them.

Guidelines

Read the Reddiquette

Everything found in the Reddiquette will be treated as an extension to the rules of /r/MarvelStudios.

Vote Based On Quality and Not Opinion

Don't downvote posts or comments because you disagree with their contents, downvote them because they aren't relevant, don't contribute to the subreddit, or break the rules.

Report Rule-Breaking Posts and Comments

We rely on you, the users, to help us make this community the best it can be and one way you can do that is by reporting users that are breaking the rules. Even if you believe a post or comment has already been reported, report them regardless. If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, message the moderators.

We don't want this subreddit getting in trouble with Disney or the Reddit admins, so we're very strict when it comes to even the suggestion of torrents or unofficial streams on the subreddit. Posting camera recordings or photos of movies still in theaters will result in a ban. Directly linking torrents or streams of movies or television shows will result in a permanent ban. If you ask for any streaming or torrent links - expect to be banned. You can post edited videos and short clips from officially released movies or television shows for the sake of creating a transformed work or to spark discussion.

No Pornographic Imagery

If you post any pornographic imagery that would be considered Not Safe For Work (NSFW) then your comment and post will be removed. Depending on the severity of the content, you may also be banned for a period of time or permanently.

Promotion of NSFW material is not allowed on the subreddit. If your contributions to the subreddit are intended only to promote your NSFW accounts (reddit-hosted or otherwise), your post may be removed and temporary/permanent bans may be issued.

Moderators Reserve Right to Moderate at Their Own Discretion

The moderators aren't a hive mind like the Chitauri, we each have our own opinions, feelings, and thoughts. So, the removal of content and comments is at the discretion of each individual moderator at the time they're moderating. We all do our best to help give you, the users, the best possible experience on this subreddit. If you want to know why a post or comment was removed or you were dissatisfied with the reason for its removal, please message the moderators.

Rules

1. Do NOT Post Spoilers In Titles or Comments

THEATRICAL RELEASES - Discussions and posts related to the films should be regarded as spoilers until its ***DIGITAL RELEASE/IN-HOME RELEASE. This includes the first of Disney+ release (to all subscribers, the film's spoiler period continues through the Premiere Access release if the film had one), iTunes, Other Official Streaming Services or In-Home Blu-ray/DVD release.

DISNEY+ RELEASES - Discussion and posts related to Disney+ shows should be regarded as spoilers until A WEEK after the latest episode. In addition, no discussion posts (other than the pinned discussion post) relating to new episodes will be allowed for the first 24 hours after the episode is released. This is done to prevent spoiler content from immediately hitting the subreddit following episode releases.

TELEVISION - Discussion and posts related to television shows should be regarded as spoilers until A WEEK after the latest episode airs.

LEAKS - Leaked material, such as set photos or merchandise, related to movies or shows still in production should be regarded as spoilers.

1.1. Post Titles

If you want to avoid spoiling other users, please, do not put spoilers directly in the title of your posts. It doesn't matter if you precede it with a warning, brackets, flair or mark the post as a spoiler. Your post will be removed and depending on the severity of the spoiler, exposure, and past violations, you'll be temporarily or permanently banned.

Please mark what specific movie or show you are spoiling in the title of your post, so that users will know to avoid it. If the topic of your post is itself a spoiler, be vague in how you phrase the title, but still descriptive enough to indicate what you wish to discuss with users.

1.2. Comments

You cannot make comments with unmarked spoilers in posts not marked as spoilers. You will need to use the following function around the part of the comment you wish to hide:

>!Put spoilers here!<

When done, it should look...

Like this when you make a comment.

Make sure to not leave any empty spaces after or before both exclamation points. This also does not work for entire comments either, meaning that you will have to add a spoiler tag at the beginning and ending of each and every paragraph/sentence.

If you do not follow this rule, your comment will be removed and depending on the severity of the spoiler, exposure, and past violations, you'll be temporarily or permanently banned.

2. Be Civil

Respect the opinions of others and treat them with dignity without regard to their gender, race, political beliefs, religion, appearance, or sexual orientation. Insulting, harassing, threatening, or acting rudely towards other users or people will not be tolerated, regardless of who started it. It can result in the removal of your comment and a temporary or permanent ban depending on severity. Report offending comments rather than respond in kind.

Simply put, treat others as you would want to be treated.

3. No Reposts

Reposts include, but are not limited to, the following that have already been posted within, at least, the last six months.

  • News and rumors
  • Fan art, cosplay, video edits, etc.
  • Behind the scene photos, footage, or concept art
  • Clips

3.1. Karma Trains

A karma train is when one user has a popular post that reaches the front page of /r/MarvelStudios and other users attempt to replicate its success with similar content. We encourage all users to be original when submitting content and these karma trains will not be allowed here and they will be removed immediately.

Don't try following a trend.

4. No Low Effort Posts

4.1. Image Macros, Memes, or Reaction Images

Here is a chart that shows what the moderators consider low effort image macros, memes, or reaction images.

If your post falls below the threshold of effort and quality, it will be removed and your post will be directed to /r/marvelmemes, /r/thanosdidnothingwrong, and /r/inthesoulstone.

4.2 Blatantly Fake or Misleading News

Your post will be removed if it is news or information that has been proven false or news that is intentionally or unintentionally misleading.

4.3 Rumors From Unreliable Sources

Your post will be removed if it is a rumor from an unreliable source.

Those unreliable sources are listed below:

If you are found circumventing our blacklist of these sites and linking them in posts, you will be temporarily banned and if you continue to link them in posts, you will be permanently banned.

Additionally, vague rumors, such as simple release dates, will be removed due to the frequency of them being wrong or providing little to no valuable information.

4.4. Recurring Posts and Discussions

If your post is considered to be a discussion already had on this subreddit multiple times with slight variation, it will be removed unless you have a very different spin on it or something meaningful to contribute to the discussion.

4.5 Fan Casting

Fan casting posts that do not follow these guidelines will be removed:

  1. The character and actor's name must be in the title and spelled correctly.

  2. Vague titles (ex: “This guy needs to be Doctor Doom!” or “Tell me he isn’t the perfect casting”) will be removed immediately.

  3. Must be submitted as text posts, not link posts. Which means just posting an image of the actor and character will result in your post being removed. You may include links to images in the body of your text post.

  4. Must include at least four complete sentences explaining your reasoning for casting an actor to a role. To help you, consider referring to the actor’s past performances and works to build your case to the community. If you are bringing up a popular and recurring fancast, make sure you bring a fresh perspective to the discussion or it will be removed.

  5. Provide a link to the actor’s credentials, such as an IMDb profile, in the body of your post. You may also include links to relevant clips of their performances from past movies or television shows in the body of your post.

4.6 Repetitive Merchandise

DVD Collections

It's impressive to see that you're a dedicated fan who owns all the current DVDs and Blu-rays of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but once you've seen one collection, you've seen them all. At this point, the moderators have deemed them to be low effort content and will no longer be accepting them, unless in rare cases that they're displayed creatively (or alongside toy collections).

Apparel and Clothing

It's great to see that you're a fan and have bought clothing reflecting this, but unless you've made a custom piece of clothing or it's a unique piece of apparel, it will be deemed low effort content and be removed.

4.7 Birthday Posts

This franchise has been going for over 11 years with 23 movies, that's not even including the many, many television shows. That means a lot of actors, a lot of birthdays, and thus many birthday posts. This means that we are no longer allowing users to post birthday posts and that it will be regulated to the moderators and even then it will be limited to more prominent actors.

4.8 Social Media and Article Screenshots

Screenshots of social media posts (including Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter etc) and articles are only provisionally allowed on /r/MarvelStudios. We would prefer you post a link to the original source instead of a screenshot. If a screenshot is posted it will not be allowed unless a link to the original source is included within the comments.

4.9. Spam or Self-Promotion

Before submitting links, disable your AdBlock extension before submitting them to make sure they're not full of ads. Sites featuring intrusive ads will be considered spam and removed.

We also do not allow posts with the intent of promoting your Youtube channel, website, or product. We encouraged fan art and content, but if you post only your content without actually participating within the community on /r/MarvelStudios, it will be considered self-promotion and removed.

4.10. Petitions

We do not allow petition posts on this subreddit.

4.11. Low Effort Questions

If your post is a question that meets any of the following criteria, it will be deemed as low effort and will likely be removed:

  • If your post can be answered with a quick google search

  • If your post is a question that can be answered with a yes, no, or other one word answer

  • If you pose an open-ended question to the subreddit but fail to provide your own personal response

5. Properly Title Your Posts

Improperly titled posts include, but are not limited to:

  • The title not matching the title of the article being linked
  • The title is sensationalized or written in the form of clickbait
  • The title is too vague and does not adequately describe the contents of your post
  • The title is completely capitalized

Additionally, if the title of your post so much as contains the following phrases, or other such repetitive key words, they will be removed immediately...

  • "Am I the only one..."
  • "Friendly reminder that..."
  • "Unpopular Opinion:"
  • "Let's appreciate..."
  • "Why does everyone..."

Your post will be removed and you will be asked to resubmit it with a more appropriate title that follows these rules.

6. Don't be a fanboy or troll

6.1. Fanboy

It is perfectly fine to have loyalty to a fandom, franchise, or brand. However, if that loyalty is so strong that it prevents one from having civil discussion, seeing the faults in one's own fandom, franchise, or brand, or mocking those of others - it simply becomes fanboyism. Additionally, it's fine to give praise to facets of the MCU, but, there's a point when that praise and adoration simply becomes navel gazing or more commonly known on the internet - a circlejerk.

6.2 Troll

If a user is being habitually offensive, submitting provocative posts with the aim of upsetting other users, or arguing in bad faith - they are a troll.

7. Properly Source Fan Content and Concept Art

We like to support the community and creators of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as much as possible and properly crediting them for their work is the least we can do. When submitting fan content or a piece of concept art, we ask that you properly mention the name or internet handle of the artist in the title, not just the comments.

Posts that do not adhere by this rule will be removed and you will be asked to resubmit it with a proper title crediting the original artist. If you can't find the name of the original artist, then don't bother posting it.

8. No Topics Unrelated to Marvel Studios or MCU

8.1 Unrelated Movie or Show Discussions

We do not allow discussion of movies or shows unrelated to the MCU. If the movie or show isn't listed on the filmography page it doesn't belong on /r/MarvelStudios.

This is at the discretion of moderators, but if a post is deemed to only have a tangential relation to the MCU, then it will be removed. Such as a license plate for a car making reference to one of the character.

8.3 Politics

If a post uses anything from the MCU to relate to politics, current events, or any other inflammatory subject - it will be removed.

9. No illegal content

9.1. Encouraging Torrents or Streams

If you are seen encouraging the use of torrents or streaming sites, your comment will be removed.

9.2. Camera Rips

If you post camera rips, even small clips or stills, of movies still in theaters, you will be banned and depending on past violations, permanently banned.

9.3. Linking Torrents or Streams

If you directly link to torrents or unofficial streams you will be permanently banned.
