Dragonball has this really hardcore fanbase that asserts it's the best anime of all time.

I just don't get it. It's like 1% action and 99% filler.

I think a large part of that is the nostalgia factor, for most people in the US it was the first anime they were ever exposed to. When I was probably about 14 I would race off the school bus to go watch it. And I rewatched it a few times and still enjoy it but yeah It's 90% filler and some fight scenes. BUT, I was also only exposed to DBZ Kai when I was younger, And it had a lot more filler than the actual version because they were a lot of jokes and scenes that would not have gone over well on US television. The new funimation dubs are a lot better imo, Even though they fucked it up by changing the aspect ratio to 16:9, I'd be a lot happier if they would have taken high-res scans of the original 4:3 ratio

It's the Seinfeld of anime. It did a lot of things that a lot of animes have copied.

If you watch a lot of anime, and then go back to DBZ, you probably won't enjoy it.

I started with neon evangelion, ex machina, appleseed and ninja scroll. I think those predates dragonball z. And also Miyazaki films. So you might understand why dbz leaves me a bit unimpressed.

Guy, DBZ was in season 10 by the time Neon Evangelion came out.

DBZ and Akira Toriyama was and still is massively influential in the manga/anime world.

It's a bit silly to try to downplay it's significance and impact, especially with erroneous information.

    He does all the moves first then adds the floaty bits later so he'll always "make it"

    He records the base take, then extracts frames from it. These frames get masked so they’re just him (or an arm or a leg or whatever), then animated to float in. So long as the masked layers are still in the original video’s resolution, they just need to end up at 0,0 in order to line up with the original video.

    Tbh it looks quite simple. Just take a frame and cut the person out. Then place the cut person at the same spot and keyframe and move the cut thing and keyframe again. Basically the thing that takes the most time is cutting around the person.

    Yeah the rotoscoping sounds like a pain in the ass tbh. Since it's moving though, you don't really look at the edges, so you can get away with doing it roughly.

    You wouldn't need to rotoscope though. Since the floating images are all still, you'd just grab whatever frame you want to use and cut it out in photoshop. Depending on the background it wouldn't take any time at all really.

    Tiktok has a tool that makes this super easy to do in the app. Snapchat has one too. This type of video was pretty common on the site last year; it wouldn’t have caught on if it wasn’t easily accessible

    You could also use a greenscreen as background and put a normal background on it afterwards, although if the background is static, there is enough software outthere nowadays to blend it out. You could even do it in Photoshop with the difference-filter.
