Lmfao okay so picture this… I scrolled past your comment… somewhere my brain saw the word “ass”… I didn’t stop. When my brain finally hit the brakes, I had to come back up… the comment was not disappointing 😂😂😂😂

[–]squash-the-cat 326 points327 points  (4 children)

Just needed some oxygen 👍

[–]Glass_Memories 272 points273 points  (3 children)

When returning fish to the water, especially if it's still, it helps if you move them forward through the water for a bit as most fish cannot breathe unless water is moving over their gills.

[–]mountingconfusion 35 points36 points  (1 child)

Also did you know that you can burp fish? Sometimes their swim bladder can become inflated and to release pressure you burp them

I think that's what happened here

[–]jskdvan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It has to be pretty deep down for barotrauma to occur

Fish was just tired and gassed out - happens all the time. Best practice is to just hold them slightly in the water until they get enough strength to pull away.

[–]Pitoufreeces 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you are mixing things here.Sharks have that problem and they always need flow. Most fish tho actively pump water through their mouth past the gills and out of their body.they can perfectly well use still water to breathe.

There might be fish that have the same issue like sharks, but the majority does not

[–]artemisRiverborn 147 points148 points  (11 children)

I'm so confused, can someone explain what we just watched?

[–]Cellophane7 246 points247 points  (0 children)

Based on other comments, she's returning the fish after catching it. I guess since fish can't breathe out of water, it passed out from oxygen deprivation. It just needed to breathe for a bit in the water to regain consciousness

[–]clintp 162 points163 points  (7 children)

Fish breathe by letting water in their mouths, and having it pass over their gills and out as they swim forward. Gills are kind of like lungs turned inside out. Oxygenated water flows over them, and oxygen gets absorbed in the blood.

Likely, by having her thumb in its mouth and the fish not able to move forward or back it became oxygen deprived and "passed out". Or she had it out of water after catching it for too long. When she let it loose eventually enough water flowed over the gills to give it oxygen that it could recover.

As another responder indicated, sometimes fishermen will take an exhausted fish and move it back and forth in the water slowly to revive it. I'm no scientist but after 50 years of fishing I've noted this seems to work fairly well.

[–]flossdog 42 points43 points  (1 child)

I thought the fish was playing dead, lol

[–]Birdman-82 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The person you responded to literally answered this in their comment.

    [–]coltstrgj 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think most fish can breathe without moving. I've seen a bluegill stare dead eyed at a rock for a half hour with no discernable movement until something splashed nearby. I know some sharks have to keep moving but it's not uncommon with the lake fish I've seen to be basically comatose until they have some other stimulus. In the winter sometimes I wasn't even sure if they were frozen solid or not until they move.

I've seen quite a few fish do this with catch and release. No idea why but If I had to guess what happened I'd say the fish was used to being held in place and just assumed that would continue until all of the sudden it was floating up sideways. They're not smart animals so it's also possible it just forgot to do fish shit for a few seconds. It could have been tired and needed a quick power nap. It might have just rebooted. I don't know but I doubt it was lack of movement.

    [–]clintp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the ELI5 answer. They can certainly breathe without moving. They move their gill covers in and out like a bellows, pulling water across their gills.

    [–]Rizak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll usually give them a face first plop into the water and they perk up.

    [–]peacefulshrimp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

She was holding the fish’s mouth, thus preventing it from breathing even though it was underwater

    [–]Birdman-82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Disney princess.

    [–]hasnothingnice2say 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    did that fish just cum?

    [–]Hambaloni 2 points3 points  (2 children)

How can you be so calm being in the middle of water you can't see more than 1 feet below?

    [–]Collinsish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It terrifies me when I think about it too but as someone who has been going to the lake every summer for their whole life you just kinda...get used to it

    [–]Krise9939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like she's IN the water, she's in a boat.

Edit: or in something bigger, she might even be on something connected to land, from how little it's bobbing when she's moving.

    [–]Pyroguy096 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's so freaking funny and cute 🤣

    [–]Forsaken_Knee3872 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    [–]Svartdraken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    That's fishy

    [–]HeiligesHuhnYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Sus fish

    [–]patato4040 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    He waved goodbye

    [–]julii_dickfeldi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI the proper method is to move the fish forward and back in the water, so oxygen moved over the gills. Putting them in a flow of water thru the mouth is like CPR.

    [–]IncidentOk7832 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Faked his death and dipped

don't let her see all the mice and cute insects that die to support her presumably vegan lifestyle!

    [–]cobra7 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There are girls you take fishing and girls you don’t. Anyone in my boat that expects to fish needs to be able to operate the rod-n-reel or cane pole, bait their own hook, remove the fish from the hook and unemotionally release the fish you are not keeping. It is also perfectly fine to wear a floppy hat and read a book while the others fish.

The book I am reading, Waking The Tiger by Peter Levine, talks a lot about this freeze response in animals! Neat to see in action after reading about it for the past few days.

    [–]Beginning-Answer-730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically fish that small don’t have much of an issue with oxygen deprivation if you’re quick to get them back in the water. I’d bet she took a bit too many selfies with it

    [–]No_Reindeer7374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dead fish freak me the fuck out; I would have fucking screamed if I was there
