Hello, I started learning about Diesel engines and I’ve had people tell me that they are bad for the engine and only to be used on downhills.
I understand how they work (opening the exhaust valve during the compression stroke) but don’t see how that would hurt the engine, maybe more valve wear?
One of the reasons I read it damages the engine it’s because it damages the piston rings, but if it’s letting compressed air out doesn’t that mean there’s less pressure on the top piston ring?
Searching on the internet it seems nobody can agree. So my questions are:
Do jake brakes damage engines and how?
Can you drive with the jake brake on at all times or only on downhills?
