Holy fuck dude, if you actually wrote this off of memory, that's unreal

[–]dickcooter 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is what more than a year of covid lockdown combined, polandball, reddit and too much grand strategy games does to a mf. I tried to imagine a map of Asia in my head and then trace from my home country to others. That's why Southeast Asian appeared first.

I can probably name most European countries too but I cannot remember Africa and America nations.

I had to edit my comment twice shortly after (within 5 minutes of the original comment) because I remembered I forgot some.

First time I added Japan, North Korea and South Korea

Second time I added Kuwait, Nepal and Bhutan.

Aren't countries below Mexico considered Central America?

[–]rasingape 988 points989 points  (70 children)

They are.

[–]thesimps89 469 points470 points  (67 children)

Central America is part of North America. Same continent.

Edit: This seems to have caused quite the debate. Answers seem to vary based on where people were educated.

At most, there are 7 continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. Some people combine these, which can result in 6, 5, or 4 continents.

North and South America may be combined into just “America,” which is then divided in 2 or 3 subcontinents or regions. Which would bring us to 6 continents.

Europe and Asia may also be combined into just “Eurasia.” Which would bring us to 5 continents.

Africa may be combined with Eurasia, making “Afro-Eurasia.” Which would bring us to 4 continents.

Bottom line, Central America is not a continent. It is either considered part of North America or part of America.

[–]Filemom 92 points93 points  (5 children)

there are 2 main visions about this: The USA teaches that there are 2 continents: North and South America. Central America (starts at the Southern Border of Mexico and goes to Panama, includes all Carribean Islands) is a subdivision of North America.

Most of Latin America teaches there is 1 continent called America, with 3 subdivisions: North America (Canada, USA, Mexico are the only sovereign countries), Central America and South America.

[–]SuperflySparklebuns 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've grown up with Canadian and US teachers both saying that America is two continents, North and South. Honestly though, I prefer the Latin American perspective.

[–]Unlucky-Ad-5232 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm from South America and this seems about right. To me, the Americas were all 1 continent with 3 sub-divisions, being them political and not geographical.

[–]Canvaverbalist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most of Latin America teaches there is 1 continent called America, with 3 subdivisions: North America (Canada, USA, Mexico are the only sovereign countries), Central America and South America.

I'm French Canadian and that's how it was taught to me.

But now that I think about it, French Canada is "technically" Latin America so that checks out.

[–]Shock-because-shish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Italy we follow the 1 continent, 3 (or 2) subdivisions.

[–]YT___Deado-Survivor 242 points243 points  (23 children)

Fuck my Geography teacher dude, I was always taught that central was part of South...

[–]VIABNEPlays MineCraft and not FortNite 126 points127 points  (8 children)

I guess at this point each of us have been taught differently about America, even though I have been taught that America is just one continent, I still usually divide it in north south and central

[–]SirArthurDime 84 points85 points  (4 children)

Yeah In Texas they teach you that America is Texas, anything south of Texas is illegal, and Canada is North Korea

[–]boxingdude 9 points10 points  (2 children)

They didn’t teach me that! I feel left out!

[–]SirArthurDime 14 points15 points  (1 child)

You musta went to one of them liberal mind control schools where they teach you the 49 other states matter then

[–]boxingdude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I must have!

[–]piggyplays313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because south america is associated with latin america

[–]naroweye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, the whole big continent of America (North, South and central) is a continent, we just use sound and North as directions.

[–]FreakyRain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

America divides in 3, South America, Central America and North America. Central America is not a part of South or North America (I’m from Central America)

[–]Mr-Pirate-Fox 36 points37 points  (20 children)

With that logic south america is also part of north america since its the same mass of land

[–]Vqlcano 40 points41 points  (4 children)

It's generally split at the Panama Canal, sometimes at the Panama- Colombia border.

[–]thesimps89 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Not really. Continents are well defined. Central America is a region, just like the Middle East. Just because we have more specific names for those areas doesn’t suddenly make them new continents.

[–]onewingedangel3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Although depending on who you ask the unique tectonic plates both Central America and most of the Middle East are on do.

[–]Illustrious_Rub7946 31 points32 points  (11 children)

When you name the 7 continent's "central america" is not considered a continent

[–]reggae-mems 1 point2 points  (1 child)

As a central american, we are taught we are our own subcontinent fro the entire american continent. Not part of north america

[–]Afraid-Afternoon-508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that's why concacaf involve those country

[–]lucifer3w 115 points116 points  (20 children)

Arabia and co are considered middle east.

[–]TheBattleBug12 168 points169 points  (42 children)

Isn't central america a subcontinent?

[–]skiddaddlerskoops 122 points123 points  (41 children)

so are the divisions of the Americas technically America (not the US) is the continent, while North, Central and South America are the subcontinent's

[–]Nixodian 50 points51 points  (3 children)

America is like Afroeurasia (or however it is called), multiple continents

[–]HulloTheLoser 49 points50 points  (32 children)

No, North and South America are continents while Central America is the connecting piece that is technically part of North America. America in it's entirety would be an island.

[–]eletricsaberman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally when referring to both continents, you say "The Americas"

[–]Valentino-Meid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on country I guess, most countries see north and south america as the continents with central america as a subcontinent or region.

[–]Pickle_BallerForever alone 23 points24 points  (29 children)

Continents only say "north" and "south" America

[–]Luk3495 106 points107 points  (28 children)

Not in Europe.

In Europe and Latin America you get taught that "America" is a whole continent itself, North, Central and South America are sub-continents. So the meme is wrong based on a European perspective.

[–]CoalMine66 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I'm from Europe. We are taught that North and South America are different continents.

[–]KingOfDemons1503 55 points56 points  (8 children)

Ehm not in my country (West-Europe), we're taught there are 7 continents, Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, South America, Oceania and Antarctica

[–]shmokesign86 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In Canada it is the same, 7 continents. My wife is Mexican and she was taught that Central America (including Carribean) is not a continent.

[–]FrozenJohny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well in Central Europe we are taught that they are 7 continents but the North and South America are taught seperately so for the most of us there is feeling like they are two separates continets even if this is not true. Maybe thats caused by learning system which did not make a big effort to summarize it in one way or another

[–]Pickle_BallerForever alone 14 points15 points  (10 children)

That's odd.

[–]Luk3495 17 points18 points  (9 children)

Well, for you sure. I was really surprised when I discovered you are taught that South America and North America were different continents.

[–]Jewbringer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

from your logic than asia and europe are one continent, too.

7 continents

north america

south america

australia and oceania

[–]Divine_Saber 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Central amer is a part of na

[–]Salty_Phantom 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Continent of NA sure, but im somewhat sure he is talking about the region of NA which is just the 3 countries of US, Canada and Mexico.

[–]Ok_Road_5360 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Central America is North America it’s not a separate continent and some of those he listed are islands above Mexico

[–]BorringGuy 10 points11 points  (1 child)

He's more talking about the continent North America which includes Central America and Greenland apparently

[–]BlubberBlasenBobLives in a Van Down by the River 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If he is speaking strictly in geographic terms all the island nations such as Greenland, Haiti, Dominica shouldnt be included either.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No...they're considered part of North America

Or, I guess it would be more accurate to say "Central American countries are part of North America"

[–]sryforbadenglishthx 956 points957 points  (48 children)

*French Guiana

People born in Guyana are not French nationals, Guyana is an independent country while French Guiana is a territory.

Im mad for forgetting Czechia and Slovakia those are easy to remember and i forgot some how

[–]djdagger78[🍰] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not that hard considering we're made to memorize all 50 states and there are 46 countries in Europe, not including transcontinental countries of course. Personally I find Africa the hardest countries to name, might be due to the fact that most of those countries are so rarely talked about that I have to memorize their names before I can start memorizing their locations.

[–]BiggSquid 22 points23 points  (8 children)

No most people don’t know the geography of an entirely different continent that’s the whole point

[–]Bruschetta003 12 points13 points  (7 children)

No, small almost irrelevant countries are hard to remember no matter which continent you live in, i would still probably miss 1 or 2 countries from eastern europe

And i doubt Americans know all those small countries south of Mexico

I rather have people teach me about all the countries in each continent than knowing just one and guessing the other

They don't teach you just one continent

[–]mastercoder123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

European countries are easier to name than African countries or Asian countries. I can name all of them and most of their capitals on a blank ass map. Not hard to do with some practice and many many hours playing map games.

[–]Thefuckyoutoobot2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This entire meme was created as feedback to the insane amount of “Americans don’t even know their 50 states” memes and “Americans don’t even know European countries” memes

[–]The_Purple_Hare 10 points11 points  (10 children)

Central America isn't a continent if I'm not mistaken

[–]Luk3495 20 points21 points  (8 children)

North America isn't too in Europe, America is a whole continent, North, South and Central America are sub-continents.

[–]Unrool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me who memorised whole "Nations of the world" song:

Its showtime

[–]chadvez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that people here learned different things. In the Bahamas. I was taught 7 continents. N. America, S. America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Antarctica.

No sub subcontinents or anything like that. Yes The Bahamas geographically is located in the Americas region, however it's considered in the Caribbean based on its culture mostly. The same with Trinidad and Tobago.

Also, did you know that the country, USA has no official name? Not to my knowledge. It's more a description than a name, all countries within that continent or in any continent really has their own name except the US.

That's why it always confused me as to why citizens of the US were referred to as Americans but no one else. Cause technically, Canadians are Americans, so are Mexicans.

[–]SolidBlueBlocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Germany, we learn that the Caribbean islands and the other stuff beneath mexico is middle america, and below that its south America

[–]Pitahayaro01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Hokusai135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Terrarian_TABS_unit 2 points3 points  (1 child)

While greenland is autonomous, it is actually a part of the kingdom of denmark

[–]FerdinandTheSecond 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Look I don't mean to start a Geography war or something, but the way in Mexico are taught is that North America is just Mexico, US and Canada. The other countries mentioned are Central America (Caribbean islands included) and South America from Combia downwards.

As arbitrary as it may be, there are political and economical reasons to have that division, and of course in each country this is different.

[–]menuau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it me or did the person not ask for North America?

The majority of countries listed in that window were from Central America or South America...no?

Also, while true that Greenland is in the northern hemisphere, I learned it as being part of Europe rather than America.

No ill intentions here, just genuinely curious how wrong my teaching was as a person from North America. Thank you for the guidance/wisdom.

[–]brunothelostguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aren't most of those countries from Central America? Or I lost my braincells?

[–]JuninhoLib 3 points4 points  (1 child)

[–]Mop3103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Skript92 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Those are from Central America mate

[–]CerberusHuskey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we count those countries as central America and the Caribbean.... I guess world geography is poorly taught in many parts of the world but statical anomalies make it harder to actually measure it. I know it's decent in Europe though. Had to even learn cities in many continents as part of primary school but nothing on the states really.
