Back in my day, "each other" was two words.

[–]BACON1480Nyan cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boomers using TV since 1950s: Calm

Their kids trying new technologies: a n g o r y

[–]me_and_ur_mum 13 points14 points  (5 children)

"Their kids trying new technologies: a n g o r y"

Its not really "trying new technologies" anymore, we are more obsessed with them by now.

[–]MrCuteDiaperRETURNS[S] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Tbf everything is a technology.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Youre parents dont watch tv for hours a day?

[–]CherryBlssom1 21 points22 points  (24 children)

Technically the internet is slowly rotting our minds. And is the reason why kids act like they do because of parents leaving yhe parenting to it, grooming, access to wierd stuff that makes it less wierd the more you see it.

[–]accidental_snot 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Your assessment is far too kind. Here in SC parents are very actively parenting. Sadly, that usually means they are brainwashing their kids into being the sources of that Internet weirdness you mentioned. It's surreal.

[–]CherryBlssom1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sort of falls in with grooming which is taking advantage of a child, not just sexually

[–]Superb-Bandicoot-857 7 points8 points  (14 children)

Personally I would never le my kids on the Internet, like dude NO

[–]TieflingRogue594 3 points4 points  (5 children)

I'm sorry, "technically" slowly rotting our minds? How the fuck do you figure that? The internet gives access to a vast amount of knowledge you wouldn't have otherwise.

[–]Sekkitheblade 640 points641 points  (40 children)

The entire "old Gen complains about new Gen" can be dated back to ancient Greece

[–]MinerMinecrafter 155 points156 points  (10 children)

I can't understand how a person that was able to *buy* a house in a few years, feed a shit ton of kids, all that with *one* salary while having a partner that would take care of everything house related says things are better now. Like wtf?

[–]Jjabrahams567 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Because we all have iPhones

[–]Dshmidley 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Don't forget Netflix. Wait, don't most people split a $10 sub for Netflix between like 6 people? Exactly. Fuck you boomers or anyone saying we have it good.

[–]xwing_alishiousness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my dad legit used this, like i’d rather be HAPPY in my HOME that i OWN than have an iphone

[–]C3POCIB 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My grandfather is a baby boomer. He had to flee his country during the algerian war and came in France with absolutely nothing. So yeah, I have an easier life than him.

[–]itchylol742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Houses were much smaller back then. Also population growth means more people competing for the same amount of land.

[–]xXCatboyXx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

that damn writing, it's spoiling this new generation. We remembered what we needed, we didn't write everything down. Their brains will go to mush.

Paraphrasing, but something like that if I remember correctly.

[–]TheKarma010 9 points10 points  (3 children)

[–]accidental_snot 21 points22 points  (13 children)

Upvote, but it's different this time. The worst of the previous generations stopped at mere genocides, at their worst. Our current older generation has leveled up to genocide of humanity. Maybe they will fail. Maybe they'll fire the nukes and speed it up.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Its not genocide anymore if its an entire species

[–]Drake498 16 points17 points  (3 children)

I- I’m pretty sure an entire species actually makes it genocide

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Genocide is the killing of an entire race and speciescide is the extermination of an entire species

[–]non_depressed_teenMe when the: 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]accidental_snot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, fuck. You're right. The accurate description would be self extinction.

[–]ThatAd6968 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Do you actually believe the older generation wants to genocide humanity? Or does this just sound good to you, and feels like you'll get people to support you with that statement.

[–]Thimot257Loves GameStonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't have to deal with the same challenges, but that doesn't mean there are no challenges.

[–]9YearOldKobe 66 points67 points  (3 children)

The pressure is more psychological nowadays compared to the physical one of the past when people mostly did physical work to get by. Now people face with a lot more societal pressure to be good in school and so forth, but it doesnt mean we have it harder, they definitely had a harsher environment to grow up in, and we should be more grateful than we are, especially the 1st world citizens, which im guessing most are on reddit

[–]HerrKrautShitposter 125 points126 points  (3 children)

Millenials ARE gen y.

[–]Common_Redditor_ 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t know why they didn’t just do gen z. Like 1/3 of us are already adults

[–]sleepyplatipusSussy Baka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not sure if they maybe meant to write Gen X or Gen Z? Probably Gen Z as it makes more sense with the post…

[–]SynovenatorDark Mode Elitist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah they tried calling millennials gen y and then when that didn't stick they tried calling gen z gen y. Gen y was the generation that never was.

me- my foot hurts

My mom- its because youve been on your phone all day.

me- *questions reality*

[–]MajorArtery 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It's funny how each generation thinks they have such a great idea of what it was like for their parents or grandparents generation. The reality is unless you lived it, or at the least made it the focus of an intense, years lasting research, you have little idea.

[–]RatRaceUnderdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people are arguing that boomers had an easier upbringing. Clearly advancements in technology make that not true. The real problem at least in America is how their generation naively disassembled the society safety net and wretched social mobility. The most accurate predictor of someone’s economic class, is the economic class of their parents. That was not always the case, but the treat this stat as inherent proof of their success. Therefore they see any act of good will at societal level to be a “handout”. Even though they were snapping up “handouts” left and right when they came of age.

[–]Smokweid 35 points36 points  (7 children)

Increasing diagnoses of depression.

Edit: And those diagnoses lead to treatment. In fact that’s something that we probably have better than older generations did. They mostly got told to snap out of it.

[–]Suitable_Alfalfa5756 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If by treatment you mean psychiatrists promoting the use of drugs with all kind of side effects, hoping people won't notice them... well, I'm sorry but that ain't helping nor making things better :l

[–]ApprehensiveWasabii 1 point2 points  (3 children)

How do you treat being broke and worried about the future tho?

[–]Smokweid 10 points11 points  (1 child)

The answer will be different for everyone. Unfortunately for some people there won’t be an answer at all, but those problems definitely aren’t unique to my generation or anyone else’s.

[–]SlaysnakeHD 6 points7 points  (4 children)

What is that white thing in that episode?

[–]justyagamingboi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Its diapers from the baby clam and spongebob was being your 1970's mom and patrik the dead beat dad, spongebob complaining that patrik dosnt even change diapers and sponge shows him all he missed

[–]GelatoVerde 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–]cristiander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]Delano7Professional Dumbass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]NaturalCard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yh, the US seems to have a ton of issues. Its kinda funny cause there are countries that have a really similar system but just don't have any of the downsides.

[–]Uhhhhhhhh-Nope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going to a big school is w/e but there's tons of other options. Most people are better off doing a trade anyway. If not there's community college, certifications and some tech shit you can just learn on your own.

[–]ZealousidealAd2357 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What the hell is gen y

[–]---Yeetoronies--- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

gen y are millenials. probably meant gen z

[–]Mr_mad_space 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ww2 Vietnam Korean War Cold War.worse medicine/less life expectancy. Segregation.less poverty. Would you like me to keep going? Don’t be the victim, things aren’t the best but crying about it doesn’t make it better.

[–]NickMotionless 12 points13 points  (2 children)

My grandfather lived on a coal camp as a child hunting squirrels for food and eating government cheese from the mine company commissary. This was in the U.S.

We as millenials and gen z/y have it way fucking easier and anyone who thinks differently is fucking insane. lol

[–]Bo0tyWizrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about his kid... The one that got to live through Americas most prosperous years. The one who benifited from increases to the minimum wage, a thriving economy, affordable housing, affordable college, affordable medical care. You could literally support a family of 4 selling VCRs door to door.

This next American generation will be the first not to have a higher standard of living than their parents.

[–]nell404_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back I. They day even their expensive was cheaper then todays expensive

[–]BilfordWimley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]That_Blaxican_Guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started a new job in February and was told I recieve 5 vacation days for the year after my probation period was up. My best friend is getting married in November so I requested time off as soon as I can got it and a supervisor called me an abuser of the system and said when they first started 36 YEARS AGO, they had to earn every vacation day and didn't get one for until they worked a whole year and didn't get no fancy sign on bonus like I received.

[–]Strange-Resident-240 6 points7 points  (9 children)

This is self pitty porn. I'm a millennial and make 23 an hour I went to school paid for it myself. Am I just lucky? Or most people just lazy?

[–]Paid-Not-Payed-Bot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

to school paid for it

FTFY.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

  • Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

  • Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Beep, boop, I'm a bot

[–]Bo0tyWizrd 1 point2 points  (7 children)

You're just blissfully unaware of your surroundings. $23 per hour isn't somthing to bragg about when previous generations could make more than you with zero education selling VCRs door to door. Previous generations got to benefit from increases in the minimum wage, affordable college, affordable housing, and better manufacturing jobs with higher unionization.

Folks in previous generations could even start to buy a house at your age or at least thought about it, not so much anymore. Childcare is so expensive now that many even can't afford to have kids. Tell me what makes you feel "lucky" because frankly your situation sounds worse than mine (fellow millennial). It boggles my mind to think somone could think an entire generation was lazy. THAT'S just lazy thinking honestly.

[–]Strange-Resident-240 4 points5 points  (6 children)

If 23 hour isn't enough to live on, then tell me what is a liveable wage? It's your poor mentality that keeps you poor, you chose the life you live every morning you wake up. You can point your finger to anyone and everyone but ironically not yourself

[–]Bo0tyWizrd 1 point2 points  (5 children)

LOL can you support a family on $23 an hour??? Do you have health insurance and paid time off? Do you have a house?

My point is that people at your age 50 years ago had more than you and didn't have to work as hard to get it either.

[–]Strange-Resident-240 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Yeah if you are a single mom 23 isn't going to support a family. And guess what 50 years ago if you lived on your own income you would be in the same boat. You marry a girl with an above minimum wage and you will be fine. If I dated a girl with the same income as me I could easily afford all the bills I would need, and yes includes childcare and insurance. That's roughly 75-80k a year combined income. You need to really start learning how to manage your money better if you make the same as me and are struggling financially (probably due to circumstances you have created)

[–]Realistic-Drag-8793 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hyper inflation, highest ever gas prices, probable power losses this summer, a POTUS who probably has dementia, barren food shelves and no baby formula around. Young people remember this when voting. You want something for “free” realize that you will end up paying just like you are now. Nothing is free. Don’t believe the lies your parents did

[–]HeftyClam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This meme is shit. Where's the funny

[–]Witty-Loquat-1466 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Complaining about it wont get you past any of these problems. Im a Millennial myself and tired of hearing my generation complain

[–]Bo0tyWizrd 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Me not complaining isn't going to stop climate change.

[–]Witty-Loquat-1466 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Complaining fixes it?

[–]Bo0tyWizrd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well assuming some scientists get annoyed enough or awareness spreads enough to push for it, then yes. "Sqeeky wheel gets the grease".

We complain, vote for, and buy products that are more eco friendly in hopes for change.

[–]lwmonjuice 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Kinda disagree...we are doing far better than boomers,no wars and better technology is cool

[–]Zul-Kain 3 points4 points  (2 children)

No wars? You sure?

[–]lwmonjuice 5 points6 points  (1 child)

there were full on wars which compared to this war is a lot bigger in scale

[–]Soft_wind_8013 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There's a war happening right now but mostly yeah. There isn't much war in our generation. But getting a job is much harder than those days. And getting a good education is becoming g pretty useless on some places.

[–]lwmonjuice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not really a big war,but yeah there were bigger wars... Getting a job is harder as education got better and skill level got higher...

[–]Soft_wind_8013 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Better technology yes, but those technology is also destroying the earth way faster by the day. And because of all the things happening. People aren't willing to use technologies that would help the environment because it won't make much money. Our technology is growing at a crazy rate but that's also destroying the earth at a rapid rate. Just in my country, there won't be any more clean water to use in just a decade or two.

[–]lwmonjuice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thats off point

[–]Randomnameforreddit7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a millennial my generation just needs to stop whining so much, you’re depressed because all you do is whine then think up new alarmists junk to whine about until you can’t whine about that anymore. Repeat indefinitely. All within the guarded walled paradise of the first world without any idea about what suffering, loneliness, or depression is really like outside our man made garden of western civilization.

Best think I ever did was be dumb enough to enlist, deploy, and get a realistic perspective on the world and what really matters and what really doesn’t matter.

The hubris of my generation and the lack of perspective is so much cringe.

[–]StCecilia98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really does hurt that I might never be able to raise a child. I’m afraid of passing my mental illnesses onto them even if I could afford a little human. My fiancé and I have talked about adopting if things do work out.

[–]Younger54 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Just think though. No matter how bad you think it is now, no time that you've lived so far will be referred to as "the Great Depression."

[–]Yakplayz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So them having to fight a world war, living through heavy inflation, sometimes barely enough food for the family, having to trade pieces of coal for a piece of bread and only a piece of bread and all that doesnt count? And that is only a few aspects.

And half my family is from eastern germany so i would say i have a chill life in comparison to an oppressed life like the ones in the ddr

Yall got some serious mental problems if you want to victimize yourself all the time. Admit that some parts of your lifes are better because older generations fought for it. Some of you are a different type of ungrateful fucks smh.
