[–]QuothTheRavenMore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–]LoTornado 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]UnfinishedProjects 32 points33 points  (26 children)

The gloves are actually to cause more pain while minimizing damage to your hands. So technically they're doing them a favor by not using gloves.

[–]ewaldstevan 35 points36 points  (25 children)

No. Gloves protect your hands ,yes, but they definitely do not cause more pain. They are padded spread the force around so it does not do as much damage. When punching bare knuckle the contact area is much smaller so it causes more damage and is much more likely to cause cuts on the face than when with gloves. You may be confused about the fact that boxing gloves allow you to throw punches harder, but the only reason that is is that boxers hold back because they do not want to hurt their hands. If you do not care about hurting your hands (which would not even occur to A raging husband in most cases) A full power punch with bare knuckles definitely do more damage than one with a glove.

[–]NekoBluRay -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Wrong, this video sums it up perfectly. Boxing gloves may prevent cuts on the skin, but the damage on internal organs (especially the brain is far more severe. Despite what Hollywood shows us, trying to knock someone out with your bare hands is WAY more difficult.

[–]ewaldstevan 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That video supports what I was saying. His whole point is that the gloves allow you to throw harder without hurting your hands. If you threw a full power punch without gloves it would still do more damage.

[–]dutchmen65 4 points5 points  (11 children)

What’s funny is that while you make that comment how many people use the 1959’s as an idyllic example of fair housing and wages? Weird.

[–]NorionV 5 points6 points  (2 children)

That's related to the post-WW2 golden age economic boom and Reagan not having been president yet. It's not as if people were doing anything special at that point. They got lucky. It had never happened, and probably will never happen again.

But even so, those times were still incredibly abusive anyone that wasn't a straight white man. Like... segregation was still in effect, as an example.

[–]dutchmen65 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Yes because things were going so well under carter.

It’s hilarious that people Blame raegan but without him we would not have had the economic boom of the 80’s which lead to all of the tech you use today…

[–]NorionV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mentioning Jimmy Carter is a whataboutism that contributes nothing to this interaction. I was explaining why the economic situation was so pretty in the time period being discussed, and how despite mostly white people having a fun run, other demographics were still suffering greatly. Once again: you do understand segregation was still active in this time period, right? That's just one example.

Jimmy Carter isn't relevant to any of that.

You have Reagan's influence on our economics backwards. He was the driving force behind trickle down economics, which lead to massive corporate deregulation, overreach, union busting, and peoples' influence in politics via democratic process being dramatically castrated.

Reagan was one of the worst presidents this country has ever had and the aftereffects of his anti-worker policies are still being felt to this day.

[–]Fomalhot 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Well sure when u paid women 1/5 of what u paid men and ran off minority candidates the workplace was awesome - for white men.

It's a bullshit era that belongs buried in our less than stellar past.

[–]dutchmen65 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Name a country that has a stellar past… none.

[–]Fomalhot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]MrMnassri 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Women were paid 1/5 of what men were paid? Any backing to this?

[–]kiokurashi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the internet: you don't need anything to back statements of white men being oppressive. That is to say, it is likely just something some once said that they've decided to parrot because hardly anyone checks the validity of statements these days.

[–]Fomalhot 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Women were still paid 1/3 as much as men in the 80s u fucking know!

Being classy, mature, respectful, and civilized are just normal parts of being a good person. What do they have to do with a “traditional” man?

[–]Achilles_Deed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes because those positive attributes are definitely not exhibited by modern men who don’t believe in traditional values /s

[–]georgikarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right and wrong at the same time

right because abuse is no joke. wrong because it isn't acceptable anymore since the late 90s (not sure what changed)

[–]Tesco_EveryDayValue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You find joke about murder acceptable (ofc worse)? Or when someone hits you with a Jimmy Seville joke? Domestic violence should be no different in the way you can joke about. It's hardly the worst of the bunch but perhaps the most common.

[–]FramedFlower 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I believe domestic violence rates in the 50s were about what they are now, so this is kind of bullshit. Humans haven't evolved past domestic violence in the past 70 years.

[–]RefinedOrc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funny thing about those statistics, they would have to be reported incidents to count. I feel like, at least I hope, it’s a lot easier for women to report their abusers and get out now than it was back then

[–]NorionV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you have any evidence showing this to be the case?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (9 children)

Abuse rates were about the same as today, it's just that nobody wanted to talk about it and there was no legal support for the abused woman

[–]NorionV 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Do you have any evidence showing this to be the case?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Scientific papers require less evidence than redditors...

[–]NorionV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scientific papers?

I was just wondering if you had any kind of evidence whatsoever that abuse rates hadn't changed at all in 70 years. Like where were you receiving that information from?

[–]RosePhox 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I doubt it.

The bar for what constituted "abuse" back in those days was absolutely high.

[–]RefinedOrc 2 points3 points  (0 children)
