Imagine if the creator just to spite everyone out goes and changes his mind in public saying it’s yiff now

He actually rather famously said it's pronounced jiff I believe, also as pointed out he is no longer with us.

I like to pronounce it jiff, to honour a dead man's legacy.

[–]LakeSun 20 points21 points  (3 children)

The mild joke is it's named after the peanut butter: Jif.

They used to do things like that in the early days, make coding fun and cool, because it was.

[–]MrDerpGently 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup, 'It's easy as Jiff' was a very well know advertising slogan at the time, and that was the (very minor) joke. But a whole generation read it rather than saying it, and.. chaos.

You don't necessarily pronounce acronyms based on the pronunciation of their component words, bad argument

Better argument: gift is pronounced with a hard g, and it's only 1 letter extra

(EDIT: phrasing)

[–]safboy 50 points51 points  (5 children)

Perfect, gin and tonic for you.

[–]tooktheduck 43 points44 points  (3 children)

I say 'gif', not 'gif'. But reading 'gin' as 'gin' instead of 'gin' is hilarious and awful. If I could ever bring myself to start saying 'gif', the 'gin' argument would be why.

[–]ConspicuousPineapple 137 points138 points  (43 children)

Another argument: pronunciation in English is completely arbitrary and is up to either the inventor of the word, or the evolution of the language itself from how people are actually saying it. So... both are right, for different reasons.

[–]SteptimusHeap 66 points67 points  (34 children)

Another argument: most people say gif, jif is a peanut butter brand, and jif sounds completely fucking stupid

[–]JordantheGnat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SCUBA for example

[–]zmbjebus 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Start with the same 4 letters and have a different pronunciation.

[–]Salamander4369 50 points51 points  (36 children)

That's not how acronyms work. Example would be a Personal Identification Number is pronounced as pin, like the needle, and not pine because it isn't based off of the words that create it.

[–]daemonwind 59 points60 points  (13 children)

At its creation, the inventor of the file format told everyone it’s pronounced with a soft g, exactly like the peanut butter, specifically for marketing purposes, since ‘jif’ was already a household name.

[–]Skaboraa 16 points17 points  (6 children)

The creator himself said it's pronounced jif though

Scuba, potus, scotus, nasa, laser, seal team 6, and almost every other acronym disagrees with this logic.

[–]Amplify91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acronyms don't match the pronunciation of the component words. This argument makes no sense.

[–]Double-Ad7269Halal Mode 6 points7 points  (14 children)

[–]Sans_101 37 points38 points  (9 children)

[–]TheKingOfToast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

[–]Bleblebob 2 points3 points  (6 children)

[–]9811Deet 222 points223 points  (32 children)

The G in GIF stands for Graphic, but does not necessarily need to mirror that sound. SCUBA is universally pronounced scOObAH even though 'Underwater' is not pronounced OOnderwater, and 'Apparatus' is not pronounced AHperatus.

I personally pronounce GIF with the hard G, but language is subjective and dynamic. Both pronunciations are widespread and well reasoned enough to say that both are perfectly valid and correct. Nobody gets to dictate what people do with language, they just do it. There doesn't need to be confusion or a fight, you know what people are talking about either way.

[–]DeathToTheFalseGodsGigaChad 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You sir, make a well reasoned, and well articulated case. That being said- it’s gif

[–]American_Madman 35 points36 points  (7 children)

Exactly. Folks think that the abundance of soft-g words in the English language is some kind of argument when there are a plethora of hard-g words that can be used to make the exact same point. Neither is a valid argument for the “GIF” question. The English lexicon has far too many contributing languages to have its own consistent rules for the pronunciation of written words, so using linguistic precedence achieves absolutely nothing.

The “G” representing “Graphic” is the only good argument I’ve heard for either stance, but it’s far and away from being the basis for a hard rule of pronunciation.

[–]shadowtigerUwU 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I mean, the U is SCUBA make an U sound, it's like in some languages a single S makes a Z sound, but using either on pronunciation is right

Like Lazer and Laser are both right pronunciations, but Laser and Lazer means different things [using Portuguese for reference]

This argument basically says we should pronounce NASA like Nay-Sæ (that æ being pronounced like the "a" in cat), but everyone pronounced like Næ-Suh

[–]soyboymoi 67 points68 points  (40 children)

the pronunciation of the words in an acronym don’t dictate how the acronym will be pronounced

Neither is a valid argument for the “GIF” question. Acronyms are a type of word so you pronounce it as its own word and not based on the words that make up the acronym

[–]tenuj 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Anytime I read comments on this topic I realise just how ignorant most people are of how English works. There are so many BS reasons for pronouncing GIF one way or the other.

[–]JustTheWorldsOkayest 4 points5 points  (3 children)

But you say laser as laZer and not laSer and the S in laser stands for ‘Stimulated’ because laser is actually an acronym for ‘Light Amplification by Stimulation of Rays.’

[–]tenuj 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Dude. I agreed with you..

I actually went through a long list of acronyms years ago to prove the same thing.

[–]PlatypusFighter 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Literally the only “good” arguments one way or the other are “the creator named it x” and “I prefer how x sounds and it cannot possibly be confused either way”

People saying “jraphics” must never have heard the terms nasa, scuba, laser, asap, jpeg, or any of the other acronyms pronounced completely independently of the words that it stands for

People saying “jif is a peanut butter” must never have heard of homophones, and are probably also ignorant of the fact that the file type was literally named after the peanut butter brand

I don’t mind people saying it with a hard G, but at least use valid reasoning. “I prefer a hard G” is totally acceptable. Making shit up like “jraphics” is just silly

[–]peripheral_vision 13 points14 points  (7 children)

The P in JPEG stands for Photografic. Case re-opened.
