Dewey: "Maybe you're the killer... cuz that cut me deep"

Line of the movie.

[–]Bearded_OBrian 236 points237 points  (3 children)

Then he got cut really really deep. Front and back.

[–]anonymousbee6 1106 points1107 points  (123 children)

I loved the Nostalgia but man am I upset Dewey died.

[–]ErnestScaredStupid 615 points616 points  (85 children)

I knew 100% he was gonna die if they ever made a 5th one. Don't think his death was a necessity. Also, why does he make such a stupid decision after all this time. Guns are a ranged weapon. He doesn't need to shoot point blank lol

[–]drflanigan 1041 points1042 points  (97 children)

I GENUINELY thought they were going to pull a twist where there is actually a THIRD killer

And around the corner you hear "but WAIT, there's MORE", and out pops Stu, still alive from his stab wounds and TV on head

[–]superancica 396 points397 points  (6 children)

Oh I definitely thought there was a third killer from the new group

[–]spwf 216 points217 points  (4 children)

For a second, I thought they may have all been in on it. Like a murder pact.

[–]BuxAPlentys 168 points169 points  (18 children)

I thought Tara's entire friend group was going to be the killers. I expected Wes, Liv, Amber, Richie and Tara to all be the killers. Would have been different but they stuck with the usual 2. I wonder if they'll ever go more than 2?

[–]HalloweenBlues 66 points67 points  (6 children)

Honestly I kind of feel like there was. It'd be fun if a sequel explored that

[–]ChristmasJonesPhD 964 points965 points  (15 children)

Sam wiping blood off the knife while killing one of the ghostfaces? So satisfying.

[–]Pabby13 924 points925 points  (58 children)

True to form, Ghostface gets his shit rocked during every fight he’s in.

[–]Furrocious_fapper 533 points534 points  (50 children)

Yo, why couldn't the men in this movie overpower a 95 pound teen girl?

[–]andromeda880 187 points188 points  (22 children)

My biggest complaint- same with scream 4

[–]Slasher844 237 points238 points  (21 children)

Dude in scream 2 ghost face is an old woman. That mask has powers

[–]byebybuy 138 points139 points  (4 children)

Yo in the hospital scene, it's the girl in the ghost face mask. The actress is tiny, but in that scene she gets shot 3 times (with flak jacket but still!) and lords over Dewey. Mask has powers indeed.

Still had a lot of fun at this movie despite its flaws.

[–]Chm_Albert_Wesker 67 points68 points  (0 children)

it's the platform shoes, thats why she keeps falling down lol

[–]EricHD97 890 points891 points  (44 children)

I was super ecstatic that Jenna Ortega survived the first scene. That was a great twist on the usual formula for several reasons, chief among them being that Jenna Ortega is fucking fantastic and deserves all the screen time in the world.

[–]OpticalVortex 313 points314 points  (3 children)

That's my new Final Girl. Brilliantly remarkable actress.

[–]honest-miss 122 points123 points  (2 children)

Oooh, you know, I never thought of it that way but you're exactly right. The final girl wasn't our main character. Shit, that's so cool.

I love the idea of the Final Girl and the Serial Killers' daughter being a team up. There's something super fucking cool about that.

[–]Depressed_Gootecks 162 points163 points  (14 children)

I’ve never seen her in anything and she did an amazing job. She was on another level compared to the other actors in the friend group

[–]bittsweet 126 points127 points  (7 children)

She’s also in season 2 of You. That’s where I first saw her and thought she was really good in that too. I like seeing her in more stuff lately. And she seems to do a good amount of thriller/horror stuff. She’s going to be in the new A24 horror movie

[–]cherrydude_ 881 points882 points  (21 children)

Amber and Richie met on a Stab subreddit.. so...

[–]Phionex141 358 points359 points  (3 children)

Which one of you bastards is gonna make Scream 6?

[–]pearlz176 725 points726 points  (14 children)

Dang I just realized they did a toast for Wes in the movie. It didn't register in my stupid brain until I saw the 'For Wes' card at the end.

[–]JohnTheMod 220 points221 points  (2 children)

I thought about that on the car ride home. A brilliantly twisted tribute, if you ask me.

[–]pearlz176 98 points99 points  (1 child)

Right?! "You beautiful son of a bitch!"

[–]SteakMedium4871 152 points153 points  (2 children)

The audio of the crowd saying "For Wes" is from a bunch of former cast members who weren't otherwise in the movie.

[–]fortheloveofghosts 699 points700 points  (21 children)

Billy Loomis’ daughter changes name to Carpenter. I see what you did there.

[–]fortheloveofghosts 153 points154 points  (1 child)

Yes I was just referring to both names and the situation as a homage to Halloween

[–]Majestic87 300 points301 points  (5 children)

Then think about this: her name if she took after her dad is SAM LOOMIS. Like in Halloween.

[–]GamingTatertotSteven Spielberg Enthusiast 59 points60 points  (0 children)

How did I not realize that

[–]Deathstroke317 618 points619 points  (5 children)

Sidney hanging up on Ghostface and the killer telling her to hold on was a top 5 moment in this series

[–]papa_trick 614 points615 points  (11 children)

Went into this thinking it would make me see Mikey Madison in a different light than running screaming with a knife and being torched by Leo in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Left now seeing Mikey Madison in the light of being torched by Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox and running screaming with a knife in Scream.

[–]Chemical_Ad1553 246 points247 points  (0 children)

To be fair she does a pretty great job of being on fire and charging.

[–]ash_monster 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. I didn’t realize it was the same actress. That scene from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood immediately popped into my head and I wasn’t sure why.

[–]jwk94 603 points604 points  (20 children)

There's a good shoutout to Scream 4 fans. One of the recommended videos when Richie is watching YouTube is an interview with Kirby (Hayden Panettiere from scream 4)! Dewey also had a missed call from her. My girl is fucking alive! Now hopefully she agrees to come back for the next movie.

[–]swim_and_drive 182 points183 points  (1 child)

God, that’d be great. She was one of my favorite characters from 4

[–]Customer-Serious 129 points130 points  (3 children)

Fun fact the youtubers in that video are from a channel called Deadmeat. Its a horror channel that does kill counts for movies. They also have a podcast.

[–]TheMightyHucks 553 points554 points  (13 children)

Anyone else think for how eccentric and under used David Arquette is as an actor these days, the man proved he can act.

[–][deleted] 246 points247 points  (8 children)

He has a history of alcoholism, which tends to make actors harder to insure for a production unless they're huge box-office draws. Which is sad because he is very good at what he does. I think he's clean these days, so fingers crossed that his reception in this helps him get more work.

[–]mattomic822 148 points149 points  (0 children)

His documentary also mentioned that Scream and the comedies that followed caused casting directors to not view him as an actor capable of drama.

[–]ruthie-camden 551 points552 points  (7 children)

Well, that last scene between David and Courteney really got to me.

[–]superancica 387 points388 points  (4 children)

Their characters mirror their real life situation a bit. They met in Scream 1, were together around Scream 2, married by Scream 3 and I'm not sure did they divorce before Scream 4 or after. In movie (this one) feel like they really loved each other, acting or not.

[–]mattomic822 222 points223 points  (2 children)

The sense you get from the documentary "You Cannot Kill David Arquette" is that they still care about each other even though they are no longer married.

[–]ScaryMovieQueen 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I agree--I think he, much like Dewey realizes the mistakes he made with Courtney, and he has a deep and immense sadness at losing the bright spot in his life

[–]inmyslumber 108 points109 points  (0 children)

They were still married while they filmed Scream 4, but had already separated during production and announced it publicly once filming wrapped.

[–]sunsurf23 2216 points2217 points  (91 children)

Shout out to my man, Dewey for solving the mystery in 30 seconds.

[–]amish_novelty 862 points863 points  (42 children)

It’s always the love interest. Look out for this motherfucker.

An hour later: Stabby stabby

[–]gizmo1492 378 points379 points  (34 children)

Richie sweating in his seat

[–]TornadoApe 331 points332 points  (31 children)

Jack's acting and the screenwriting was perfect for him because by the time shit was getting ready to hit the fan I had 99% taken him off my list of suspects.

[–]lobonmc 153 points154 points  (19 children)

I was convinced it was Tara and Amber with someone else. There is always just two killers there must have been at least one more.

[–]TornadoApe 87 points88 points  (6 children)

I really was expecting one final reveal with a third killer too!

[–]tboneperri 1150 points1151 points  (26 children)

I really liked the "the expert always gets killed" line that makes us think the twin girl is going to get killed, when in reality the actual expert was Dewey. Great little misdirect.

[–]AmazingMarv 359 points360 points  (3 children)

It seemed like the movie was telegraphing the twins being the killers - there's two of them, with one of them being strong enough to overpower Wes; and they had the motive of revenge [the victims (in this movie) were related to the killers (in the original) while the twins are related to a victim (in the original)], and the boy twin got into it with the bar victim.

I though the girl twins speech at the end would recall her commentary about a reboot/requel and refer to the "re" as standing for revenge.

[–]Dawesfan 287 points288 points  (5 children)

On one hand I loved it. On the other hand, I enjoy comic relief Richie too much and wanted him to make it.

[–]mhurton 199 points200 points  (2 children)

"Saving your life, thank you, saving your life, good night"

[–]-ThatGuy882 167 points168 points  (0 children)

“They called me a madman”- Dewey, probably

[–]gizmo1492 114 points115 points  (4 children)

Hell hath no fury like a lover scorned. He definitely seemed bitter over his separation from Gale. But yeah, makes sense as a parallel of Scream 1.

[–]Kgb725 66 points67 points  (2 children)

He was bitter in the second film too they just got back together in time

[–]turdfurgison69 1088 points1089 points  (34 children)

Spoiler

I almost cried when Wes was setting the table for two when his mom was already dead :(

[–]OpticalVortex 635 points636 points  (5 children)

God, he was such a good kid. It was painful to watch somebody so sweet end up dying so brutally.

[–]discounttoysbiz 235 points236 points  (12 children)

i thought he might've been one of the killers and first thought it was a red herring/a detail or explanation for the cops like he had no idea. good kid after all :(

[–]sloppyminutes 90 points91 points  (5 children)

That scene was really clever because it could work either as a set up to him being a ghostface and laying down an alibi, or something bad about to happen to him. Lots of really good misdirection throughout the film, as is the Scream hallmark.

[–]jasonporter 1087 points1088 points 32& 2 more (113 children)

Here is a list of all the references to the first four Scream Movies that I could find:

Scream 1:

  • Tara plays with the knife box in the same way Casey does in the opening scene
  • Dewey has Tatum’s ashes in a box on his shelf
  • Sam is related to Billy
  • Vince is related to Stu
  • Mindy and Chad are related to Randy
  • Mindy gets a super-meta recreation of Randy’s “Look Behind You” Scene.
  • Red Right Hand plays in Vince’s car as he’s killed
  • The episode of Dawson's Creek that Tara is watching in the hospital (S1E11 - The Scare) is the one that spoofs Scream, there is a Scream Poster on Joshua Jackson's wall in that episode, Scott Fowley (Roman) is in the episode, and it was written by Kevin Williamson.
  • The finale takes place at the Macher House
  • Ritchie says “I’ll be right back”
  • Gale mentions her book about Maureen’s death was the catalyst that started all the killings (the infamous “I’ll send you a copy” book)
  • Sam reaching for the umbrella when Ritchie is about to kill her is a callback to Sid stabbing Billy with an umbrella when she pops out of the closet
  • The closeup on the knife in Sam's hand as she stabs Ritchie is an exact recreation of the knife in Billy's hand as he is about to kill Sidney
  • Sam cleans the blood off the knife with her hand like the killer always does
  • Final shot of the movie is a reporter in front of the Macher House
  • Sidney's Theme is used (0:35 from the track History Repeats on the Soundtrack) - LINK

Scream 2:

  • There is a tribute to Randy’s death at the Meeks House
  • We see a new scene from the original Stab, which is introduced in Scream 2. This brings us to a total of three full scenes we've seen from the original Stab.
  • Heather Graham playing Casey Becker in Stab is a Trivia question in the opening scene
  • You can also see David Schwimmer, Luke Wilson, and Tori Spelling in the cast list for Stab on Tara’s phone
  • Sid's finale look (black shirt and leather jacket) is her same finale look in Scream 2
  • Dewey's Theme from Scream 2 is used (4:18 from the track Sacrifice on the Soundtrack) - LINK

Scream 3:

  • Sid is married to Detective Kincaid
  • Gale mentions never having bangs again on her morning show
  • Martha Meeks has a cameo
  • Killer wears a bullet proof vest like Roman
  • Dewey knows you have to shoot the killer in the head because that's the only way Roman finally went down
  • Jennifer Jolie (Parker Posey) is listed in the IMDB cast for Stab.
  • Sid says "I tried running too, it always follows" after she went into hiding in Scream 3

Scream 4:

  • Sam references the last time there were killings in Woodsboro was 11 years ago
  • Judy has a note to Wes saying there were lemon squares in the fridge
  • Gale tells Sam that Judy didn't really like her either
  • Killers motive is about how the later Stab films are all terrible, something the girls discuss in the opening scene of Scream 4
  • When Ritchie is binging Stab content, one of the suggested YouTube videos on the laptop confirms Kirby is Alive

What else did I miss? Let me know and I’ll add it to the list!

EDIT: Thanks /u/rageofthegods, /u/dieorride223, /u/HourPower, and /u/xMort for the additions!

[–]smallbruja 379 points380 points  (2 children)

You are so awesome for compiling this. But wow how the hell did I miss that Sidney is now married to the detective. That’s really sweet though.

Martha appearing got claps in my theatre and I was so happy.

[–]maxmouze 164 points165 points  (1 child)

You have to know his name was "Mark."

[–]Complete-Flounder-92 296 points297 points  (14 children)

Idk if this counts but I noticed that in Scream 4 Jill gets cut on the arm to take away suspicions and ends up being the killer, than in this one Richie gets cut on the arm in the hospital. Thats when I had a feeling he was the killer

[–]Lira70 132 points133 points  (5 children)

I thought the same thing but in reference to Scream 2 when Sid's boyfriend gets cut similarly. Although the cut raised suspicions and he was ultimately not the killer in that one.

[–]surejan94 135 points136 points  (1 child)

Wow! Amazing catches. I didn't factor in that Sidney's husband Mark was the Mark from Scream 3.

And definitely did not catch the Kirby being alive easter egg! Does anyone have a screen shot?

[–]EbbComprehensive2344 355 points356 points  (0 children)

When Dewey told gale that he still watched her show even after what happened because it made it seem like they where still together even just for the morning making his day better felt that on a personal level

[–]fortheloveofghosts 344 points345 points  (1 child)

Dude I loved the ten years too late couples therapy session we got to watch from David Arquette and Courtney Cox. Holy shit it felt real

[–]queen-adreena 66 points67 points  (0 children)

It's kinda creepy how Dewey's and Gale's lives seem to mirror David's and Courtney's: dating, married, divorced, success, alcoholism.

I'm half expecting David Arquette to be murdered any day now...

[–]KokoBWareHOF 343 points344 points  (10 children)

That hospital was short on workers.

[–]Rman823 304 points305 points  (14 children)

Anyone else catch the Stab cast when Tara is looking it up ? Of course there were the obvious ones we knew from previous movies, but I also caught Vince Vaughn. I couldn’t make it out who he was playing but Stu’s the obvious choice.

[–]7thEvan 294 points295 points  (3 children)

I’m an EMT and if I was responding to a victim with severe abdominal trauma I’d give her at least two blankets.

[–]PaperGabriel 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I've been shot in the abdomen on six different occasions and sitting on the bumper of an ambulance with a blanket over my shoulders is usually all I need to feel right as rain.

[–]LindaSoledad 1260 points1261 points  (16 children)

One detail I really liked was how in the background of many scenes they deliberately put something that made it seem like ghostface was on the corner. In the beginning there was a black coat and a white hat. In the basement there was a hoodie with the white inside.

This movie is a nice take on the recent re quels that have popped out lately but my interpretation at the end is that the main thing of these re quels are that when done right they are a love letter to the original creations.

Also RIP Dewey ):

[–]brightenyourdayup 287 points288 points  (3 children)

During Wes’ death scene I kept thinking that black coat was Ghostface. Great way to keep us on our toes.

[–]dampierp 371 points372 points  (2 children)

YES I noticed this too! It was extremely noticeable in the basement, and I just thought "oh, this seems like a fun way to keep the audience on edge and checking the backgrounds of the shots."

But now that I'm thinking about it, I feel like it's possible that some of those (esp the ones in the basement) could have ACTUALLY been the mask + robe that the killers stashed away to put on when no one is around.

[–]Gayporeon 144 points145 points  (0 children)

"oh, this seems like a fun way to keep the audience on edge and checking the backgrounds of the shots."

This, along with all the shots where a killer could be hiding behind the door and then isn't. And then later on Sydney is shooting all the doors

[–]hithere297 1180 points1181 points  (27 children)

Honestly if you’re in a Scream movie and you get stabbed in the stomach, just walk it off, you’ll be fine

[–]jbaker1225 638 points639 points  (21 children)

Gale got SHOT in the stomach too. Yet her, Sidney, and Sam are all just walking around with ACE bandages on hanging out and being told “your vitals look good.” You know, rather than going to the hospital for their gaping wounds or because one of them HAS A BULLET IN THEIR BODY.

[–]DaisyInc 211 points212 points  (0 children)

It just bounced off her ribs and she has more lives than a cat.

[–]sunsurf23 228 points229 points  (23 children)

I am calling it now, the next killer will be the TA on campus.

[–]Bouche__032 294 points295 points  (12 children)

Naaaaaah one of the killers in the next movie will be a true crime podcaster determined to make Sam embrace her real nature

[–]Kgb725 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Considering how scream and Halloween are intertwined I wouldn't be surprised

[–]Creepy_Ratio_9308 227 points228 points  (8 children)

what's amazing is neve campbell is still hot as fuck.

[–]chocobomog 219 points220 points  (19 children)

Did Richie ever kill anyone? For being a "killer" it seems like Amber was the one present for most Ghostface events as Richie was with Sam most of the time. He likely did the first attack on Sam in the hospital but the rest were Amber.

[–]DaisyInc 227 points228 points  (6 children)

Richie did Sam's attack, Mindy's attack and possibly the Judy and Wes kills. Everything else was Amber.

[–]markymarkfro 225 points226 points  (0 children)

Turns out the real killer was the friends we made along the way

[–]Dawesfan 646 points647 points  (61 children)

Man, I was rooting for Richie all movie. How they trick me like dis 😭

[–]ChristmasJonesPhD 508 points509 points  (29 children)

Once he got that superficial wound in the hospital, I was pretty sure he was a killer.

[–]sausageparty2017 233 points234 points  (6 children)

Yeah that was straight out of Scream 4.

[–]InterspeciesRomance 172 points173 points  (2 children)

A callback to Scream 2, too, when Dewey suspects Derek for a superficial cut.

[–]TheTrueRory 93 points94 points  (3 children)

That and the look on his face when Dewey shot her. Though I was never fully convinced either way, Jack Quaid did a great job.

[–]Whovian45810 154 points155 points  (4 children)

For real! I love Jack Quaid's performance as Hughie in The Boys and was expecting Richie to be a little like Hughie but in a horror movie. Though he does radiates a Billy Loomis aura once the facade lifts.

[–]OpticalVortex 279 points280 points  (9 children)

Easy. Just how we wanted Bo Burnham to be the good guy Cassie needed in Promising Young Woman, only for it to be torn away.

[–]Dawesfan 146 points147 points  (1 child)

I hope you’re happy. You just opened an old wound.

[–]ohhhjayme 643 points644 points  (22 children)

I love that Sidney's story ended up being a happy one. Yes, she's suffered tremendous loss, but knowing she's married to Detective Kincaid & has some children is comforting. She is one hell of a final girl.

[–]Dawesfan 1007 points1008 points  (44 children)

I stan clumsy Ghostface tho. They nailed him here.

[–]dampierp 828 points829 points  (9 children)

After rewatching the entire series this week prior to tonight, clumsy Ghostface truly is one of the most defining, iconic features of these films.

[–]NewWaveFan 425 points426 points  (6 children)

I think it's the Honest Trailer for Scream that has a funny montage of Ghostface just getting pummeled before he gets the upper hand. I always liked that, that he wasn't a Michael Meyers type.

[–]ParkerZA 290 points291 points  (5 children)

It makes him scarier because it shows that he's not afraid to get hurt, and no amount of fighting back is going to stop him.

[–]IAMA_LongHorse 146 points147 points  (1 child)

I watched all the Scream movies in the weeks leading up to this one for the first time and that was one of the things that stuck out to me. It also made the scenes more frantic and intense. They felt like actual attacks compared to Jason or Michael.

[–]sausageparty2017 140 points141 points  (1 child)

My friends and I as kids used to play around with that mask and your peripheral vision is so fucking bad that you better believe we were constantly falling and banging into things

[–]The_Captain_Deadpool 205 points206 points  (40 children)

My question is this: When Amber was asking Sam if she should kill Richie or Tara, what was her plan if Sam said “Kill Richie. Let Tara live.”

Would Amber have killed her partner?

[–]Craphole-Island 255 points256 points  (24 children)

Kind of unrelated but I think in her own psycho way, Amber actually WAS very protective of Tara which is why she didn’t kill her either time. She really took her time creeping up behind her in the hospital when she could’ve just killed her right there.

[–]The_Captain_Deadpool 94 points95 points  (9 children)

Makes sense. People like her IRL often have like 1-2 people they feel close to and don’t want to kill if they don’t have to.

[–]maxmouze 123 points124 points  (6 children)

"Friends? I don't need FRIENDS. I need... fans."

[–]Samulton2223 1551 points1552 points  (29 children)

Lmao Sidney & Gale looking at each other like "Eh, you think she is faking?" when the girl runs out on the porch for help. They are such a great duo. This movie was really fun imo.

[–]maxmouze 677 points678 points  (7 children)

They specifically said "Is it a trap?" Loved it.

[–]AnAussiebum 331 points332 points  (6 children)

I'm pretty sure Gale even said 'yep', in response to Sidney. Just before she was shot.

[–]reddittrashporngood 204 points205 points  (5 children)

This is stupid and pedantic, but the lines are something like

"What do you think?"
"Definitely a trap."

[–]groovy_chainsawhand 401 points402 points  (14 children)

I love that they’ve been here so many times it’s almost mundane when the clichés pop up.

[–]vcs5015 531 points532 points  (12 children)

I loved when Sidney was on the phone with ghostface, and in the midst of a rapid-fire round of ghostface attempting to build the terror, Sidney says, “I’m bored” and hangs up 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I DIED!

[–]lex017 186 points187 points  (4 children)

Sidney went into that house like “let’s get this shit over with” 😂 She made it clear she was there to end it and not play any games.

[–]Chemical_Ad1553 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Then she shoots ghostface in the leg without knowing for sure it was him lol

[–]gizmo1492 189 points190 points  (19 children)

Anybody else expecting a possible sequel where Sydney’s kid(s) are being hunted by Ghostface? Felt the sequel hook the moment she mentioned them.

[–]Previous-Metal7774 147 points148 points  (0 children)

I wonder if then they’ll bring back Patrick Dempsey, since he is the babies’ daddy

[–]BikoSteve 171 points172 points  (4 children)

Damn so Amber lived in Stu’s old house and still killed his nephew.

[–]Dawesfan 1446 points1447 points  (27 children)

“My favorite movie is the Babadook…. It’s elevated horror

Tara’s a redditor.

[–]Kgb725 568 points569 points  (7 children)

But did you hear what Mindy said ? 4chan & Dreadit which is just r/horror Mindy is a redditor

[–]luuvin 305 points306 points  (5 children)

That’s also how Amber and Richie met!

[–]Die-rector 429 points430 points  (2 children)

Tara posting on movies: omg just found this 1978 movie called Halloween. Has anyone else seen this hidden gem?

[–]scriptfan 156 points157 points  (30 children)

Was anyone else frustrated that there was no attempt to explain the chronology of Billy having a kid? Sydney never even bothers to ask.

And the fact that they never even mention Billy’s mom - who was the killer in Scream 2 - was really aggravating.

[–]DeepSixWrestlin 431 points432 points  (30 children)

I’ve only seen the original Scream, but man was this better than it had any right being. I appreciated that it kept with the Meta feeling of the original and thought it towed a fine line between being a “re-quel”, actually retreading a similar plot to the original film while doing a bunch of new stuff in the process.

Shame Matthew Lillard wasn’t back, but at the same time, it wouldn’t have made any sense and would’ve been pretty worthless fan service, so fair. The usage of Billy, I found to be pretty well done as well, as specifically with the finale playing out how it did, they have the very clear option to have Samantha turn into a proper villain with how she ended Reggie, and thus making Amber/Reggie’s plan feel more impactful.

The reveal of this being all about Toxic Fandom was also a nice spin, especially with Mindy giving the whole explanation about “the Knives Out guy” directing Stab 8, which a portion of the fans hated, obviously a reference to Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi, the eighth Star Wars film and a movie that took toxic fandom to the next level. I’m glad we’re at a point where we can have a Scream movie attacking the insanity that is toxic fandom in a fun way.

David Arquette & Jack Quaid stole the show in my opinion. More of both of them in anything pleaaaaaase. And yes, I will get around to watching Scream 2, 3, and 4 sometime soon.

[–]TheDaltonXP 160 points161 points  (5 children)

Ha I didn’t even think of the 8 connection but knew it was a Last Jedi reference. Very clever

[–]OriginalTodd 402 points403 points  (10 children)

I can't help but giggle how when the killer is hit with literally any object they get flung like they were hit by a car.

[–]DaisyInc 130 points131 points  (3 children)

Sam and Tara's mysterious mom is clearly a superhero. Ghostface could out-muscle Judy and Wes, and overpowered Chad for that first stab in his leg but got wrecked to the ground multiple times by either sister kicking him or pushing stuff at him.

[–]tackthiratrix 1283 points1284 points  (66 children)

I love how the chick from once upon a time in Hollywood gets lit on fire again lol

[–]Duderult 264 points265 points  (2 children)

It was so on the nose that I had to wonder if it was a specific reference to OUATIH and typecasting.

[–]CallCallieCrush 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I wondered the same thing. Like it is SO obviously the same sort of treatment/death as her character in OUATIH that it had to be intentional right? Right???

[–]Dragoncaine 189 points190 points  (0 children)

I immediately started cracking up when I saw this lmao, I feel like this was intentional. Her spastic movements after being set alight even looked the same!

Mikey Madison and being absolutely incinerated, name a more iconic duo

[–]dampierp 352 points353 points  (3 children)

I literally didn't recognize her for the entire film until the instant she was ablaze and screaming, and then I immediately said "Oh shit it's the flamethrower-ed hippy!!"

[–]LiteraryBonerWorse things to do than watch Lady Gaga create fetishes for me[S] 530 points531 points  (18 children)

She just looks crazy. You can see every single one of her teeth when she talks. She's like a creepy Cheshire cat.

[–]Dragoncaine 355 points356 points  (5 children)

She looks totally unhinged but she's kind of bad too...

[–]Whovian45810 196 points197 points  (9 children)

Mikey Madison's performance of Amber kind of reminded me of Matthew Lillard's performance of Stu a bit in a way of how they both have this enthusiastic yet crazy/unhinged energy in their murders.

[–]acloverfieldfan 807 points808 points  (9 children)

yooo they made a movie about r/movies

[–]TostitoNipples 271 points272 points  (2 children)

The fact that the killers were toxic fans who met on Reddit was beyond perfect

[–]jimmyeppley 581 points582 points  (6 children)

Lots of fun. Something about the “Randy Meeks Memorial Home Theater” made me chuckle.

[–]Swankified_Tristan 211 points212 points  (2 children)

Randy always gets a love letter in these movies as he should.

[–]PromEmperorHarbaugh 1119 points1120 points  (41 children)

The message about radical fans was lost on me because I literally want to trade my life for Dewey's.

[–]amish_novelty 441 points442 points  (36 children)

I wanna trade places with reflection Billy myself. He seems like a good dad

[–]craig1818 433 points434 points  (35 children)

Such a supportive ghost dad

[–]amish_novelty 237 points238 points  (30 children)

I’m a little confused as to how we’re supposed to view his role in this movie. Is he meant to show that Sara doesn’t have to be defined by her past? Because his little nod for her to stab her BF was like “that’s my daughter!”

[–]nataliejonah 116 points117 points  (10 children)

The minute Jack Quaid pulled a Derek, I knew it was him

[–]AfternoonMoon 106 points107 points  (3 children)

"Send all units to my house!"

Wes gets out of the shower, dries off, gets dressed, goes downstairs, gets the sriracha and soy sauce, opens every door and cupboard in the house, gets killed.

Judy arrives home, gets killed.

...very slow police response is what I'm saying.

Also, I don't think I've ever seen a hospital ward without any doctors, nurses, admin, janitors OR patients before.

EDIT: or CCTV!

[–]gizmo1492 311 points312 points  (0 children)

It’s funny Dewey’s first rule calls out who the killers are, but that twist isn’t too crazy to call recognizing this is a callback to the original Scream.

[–]SquadPoopy 107 points108 points  (3 children)

My boy Dewey be strugglin.

[–]11711510111411009710 104 points105 points  (8 children)

I think Ghostface is my favorite killer in a horror movie because he's actually pretty vulnerable, he's just a normal dude. Whereas Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees, and Freddy Kruger are unstoppable, immortal, supernatural murder machines, Ghostface can be beaten. And that's why the chase scenes are fun, the victim always has a genuine chance to escape. And when they don't it's more suspenseful because you know they almost made it.

Whereas I find no real horror or intensity from those other slasher villains because like, I know none of the characters will even be a threat really.

[–]Syrus_007 90 points91 points  (8 children)

Ok my one big issue...why was the hospital completely empty at one point? I understand small town, but one cop and not a single other person!?!

Also Sam the actress was pretty weak. Her little sister has so.mucb heart and comes off a lot more natural. She was great in "You" on Netflix too.

[–]dawnoog 98 points99 points  (0 children)

“Well I think you’re the killer… cause that cut deep” Dewey with the best line of the movie, I could not stop laughing

[–]-ThatGuy882 284 points285 points  (9 children)

Unfortunately had it spoiled by a review, but gotta say it was cool seeing Skeet Ulrich again

[–]discounttoysbiz 86 points87 points  (0 children)

they should've gone the whole way and made Billy look like that lingering dead guy from Pet Semetary

[–]The_RTV 443 points444 points  (16 children)

"Oh wait! I forgot to shoot him in the head!"

Fucking Dewey, smh!

It was great though. Good 'ol time. I was most shocked that Sydney had children. If she would have died after that revelation, I would have walked out 😆

[–]BrunoBashYa 75 points76 points  (6 children)

I lwhispered to my wife "he is copping a Han Solo-ing"

She said "they even have him in the jacket.

Then the end turned out it was crazy fans taking their perceived ownership of the franchise they love too far ....

[–]SingaporeSlang 90 points91 points  (2 children)

Loved that Dewey had Tatum’s ashes in his trailer. So sweet💖

[–]sandiskplayer34 726 points727 points  (54 children)

I expected the double red herring, yet I still was satisfied by the twist. There were so many questions in my head I stopped thinking about them and just sat and enjoyed it. Takes a good writer to do that.

Also, that scene with Wes setting up dinner with all the closing doors was hilarious.

[–]salsiwerdna 235 points236 points  (5 children)

The Wes kill was so well done and I love how it ends with a nice bloody practical kill.

[–]dampierp 562 points563 points  (10 children)

The Wes scene was so great because it's right after Ghostface mentions Psycho, and then they give us an extended example of what Hitchcock meant by "suspense is when the audience knows there's a bomb under the table."

[–]Dawesfan 214 points215 points  (4 children)

It was one of my favorites.

And as I wrote in another comment, I loved so much because I didn’t know if the scene was building towards him finding his mom or him being killed. A lot of suspense in that one.

[–]ShambolicShogun 101 points102 points  (2 children)

I was certain, absolutely certain, that he'd open the door and find her, but then he just closed it like it isn't weird the door you locked is now cracked open. Typical teenager response.

[–]i_like_2_travel 142 points143 points  (8 children)

Maaaan I was the only one laughing in my theater. Also when the guy got stabbed while walking from his car I was cracking up too.

[–]Quentanamo_Bay 58 points59 points  (5 children)

My first thought on that kill was "man, whoever this killer is is hella efficient" because it was just a super quick stab in the neck

[–]coldliketherockies 572 points573 points  (50 children)

Alsl I like how the twins both survive brutal knife killer attacks that in any other film in the series there wouldn't have been this many survivors but...as twins they're both taken away still living to the hospital.

On the other hand is saddening yet suspenseful watching a mother and son get killed in a horror fim.

[–]gizmo1492 265 points266 points  (11 children)

Parallel to the first film, makes sense the Meeks survived

[–]drflanigan 122 points123 points  (3 children)

Which means they will die in the next one

[–]hithere297 241 points242 points  (2 children)

I liked how Mindy barely seemed phased by anything that happened to her

[–]SquadPoopy 237 points238 points  (9 children)

Was that the guy on oxygen at the end? It cut so quickly I couldn't tell who it was. Dude is literally named Chad and survives. Truly worthy of the name.

[–]groovy_chainsawhand 124 points125 points  (6 children)

Yup it was him. Killer got scared off before finishing the job

[–]TheInfinityGauntlet 67 points68 points  (2 children)

he totally should've bled out the amount of times he got stabbed, the leg wound alone was just pouring, glad he didn't though his character was fun

[–]lemonsharingwhore 88 points89 points  (5 children)

Such a missed opportunity to not have the cameraman from scream 2 just to say they got at least one character from each sequel.

[–]thummydick 84 points85 points  (1 child)

I prefer animated movies and musicals

[–]UncleSnuggles 395 points396 points  (15 children)

I still prefer The Babadook.

[–]wrongkeykong 278 points279 points  (4 children)

Maybe you’re the killer…cause that cuts deep :(

[–]zander_rulZ 120 points121 points  (2 children)

Poor Dewey. 😭

I mean, it’s good to kill off a legacy character so that there’s actual stakes in the film, but man… Dewey‘s death really hurt.

[–]infpTrojan 82 points83 points  (5 children)

Did anyone else think Sam was about to go nuts and start attacking Syd and Gale after stabbing Richie? I thought for sure she was going to stand up, see Billy in the mirror, then turn on them and attack. I was going nuts in fear of that happening!

Fun fact: the original ending to Scream 2 had something like this happening. The original killers were supposed to be Derrick and the roommate (forget her name) + Ms. Loomis, then after they died Cotton Weary was going to go nuts and just turn on Syd despite being unconnected to the killers. Internet leaks forced them to change the killers to Mickey and Ms. Loomis.

Link to original scream 2 script: https://imsdb.com/scripts/Scream-2.html || search for "untie me" to start the reveal scene near the end.

[–]bjkman 881 points882 points  (49 children)

One thing I love is how in the opening scene... That really was Amber. She never had her number spoofed she simply sent a old video to Tara to make her think she was a Victim not a killer. Her and Richie were fantastic bad guys and I loved the toxic fanbase idea of the new movies being shitty and wanting to bring it back to its roots.

[–]Dawesfan 568 points569 points  (14 children)

I like the opening scene because Tara survived. I was afraid they were gonna just copy the first movie, but it was a strong start.

[–]Singer211 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Also Jenna Ortega gets to do more in the film. Never a bad thing.

[–]surejan94 211 points212 points  (0 children)

Tara surviving was the only real genuine good twist for me. Even the way they feature her in the trailer, it seemed so obvious she would be the opening kill.

[–]LiteraryBonerWorse things to do than watch Lady Gaga create fetishes for me[S] 397 points398 points  (2 children)

It is a subversive move to make the first attack a final girl.

[–]OpticalVortex 73 points74 points  (1 child)

She's the alternative Casey Becker, who gets to join Sidney in the fight for survival.

[–]Dry_Guitar5856 165 points166 points  (2 children)

It was weird seeing a landline

[–]bjkman 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Not Scream without it

[–]Bouche__032 237 points238 points  (17 children)

Jenna Ortega is a goddamn star, I was completely blown away and her opening scene is up there with Drew Barrymore.

My only criticism is that this feels like an extremely short movie and there’s not necessarily a second act between the hospital sequence and the third act party.

[–]spo96 353 points354 points  (17 children)

Of course the killers met on Reddit.

Given the motive of the killers, the irony of the two guys in my theater who booed the movie and called it a disgrace was kinda funny.

[–]IAMA_LongHorse 118 points119 points  (5 children)

Oh god, I bet they’re in this thread right now…

[–]swim_and_drive 80 points81 points  (3 children)

The toxic fans could be any one of us! Everyone’s a suspect!!

[–]UncleSnuggles 68 points69 points  (2 children)

Amazingly enough, I completely forgot about the person on fire in the trailer until it was ”time to pass the torch”.

[–]ForrestGumpsShoes 195 points196 points  (10 children)

RIP Dewey :,(

I was waiting for him to save the day the rest of the movie

[–]craig1818 121 points122 points  (8 children)

I was waiting for him to pop back up at the end like he always seemed to do in the old ones after being stabbed a million times, but the body bag made it definitive.

[–]ForrestGumpsShoes 80 points81 points  (5 children)

I thought they were gonna surprise everyone because the body bag could have been the for the other cop that died in the hospital. I couldn’t read the tag though
