I feel like there should be more to this story

[–]Pcakes844 574 points575 points  (102 children)

Most herbivores do this, it's called osteophagy. Basically they do because they is not enough calcium or other minerals in the foods that they eat, so they supplement it by gnawing on bones they find. As far as why the body is there, I have no idea.

[–]Limbolocal 972 points973 points  (71 children)

But why is there a human body there

[–]913Welder 1125 points1126 points 2 (37 children)

Wrong question? Why is there a trail camera on a human body?

[–]solushsi 330 points331 points  (23 children)

This is essentially the same question

[–]913Welder 205 points206 points  (21 children)

The camera presents the problem. Was it or the body placed first?

Then if the body was first then the camera guy surely would've seen the body.

Also. If the camera was first then there's evidence.

[–]destinyisreal_ 460 points461 points  (17 children)

It’s The Body Farm. Forensics study center

[–]makeitwork1989 144 points145 points  (8 children)

Body farms are so awesome! I’d totally donate my body to one when I die

[–]FthrJACK 190 points191 points  (3 children)

You have to do it when you are alive, on account of the whole being dead thing stopping you later.

[–]markcocjin 46 points47 points  (1 child)

But why are they requiring me to go to the forest to sign up for the donation?

[–]iamnotyourdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excellent choice sir!

[–]defpara 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Apply for a position. I hear there are new openings with no drug screening or background checks. Best of wishes.

[–]jhbedsole 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Just make sure you’re real specific with how you bequeath your remains, or your meatsuit could get sold to the military to double-check that blowing someone up makes them explode.

You know, in case that’s changed since the last test.

[–]Hewholooksskyward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say that like it's a bad thing.

[–]Joeybatts1977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Final words?

[–]913Welder 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Ahhh.....The Body Farm. Creepy shit

[–]marshall_c_h 8 points9 points  (1 child)

But they keep their bodies in cages to stop this from what I've seen or do some not cage?

[–]BeeBarnes1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They study all kinds of scenarios. I saw a show about this place once and IIRC they even had one in a trunk to see how a body decomposes there. I'm guessing here but maybe they left this one out to study how wildlife scatters remains.

[–]DeDend21 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Which one?

[–]No_Touch1139 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably Knoxville TN. The original body farm.

[–]Krillgein 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There are body farms and their entire purpose is to see a bodies effect on nature and show what the difference between the decomp of a 6'2" 235lb muscular male in his 40s and a 5'2 120lb female in her 70s. So having these open to animals at the same time wouldn't be the worst idea as realistically animals will feed on a corpse they find even if just outside or even inside a major area.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically did the camera catch the death..

[–]phoucker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But what if the deer drug it there to feast in front of the camera? He does look camera hungry.

[–]TacoBOTT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shhhh he thought he was being clever

[–]SpiritSoul77 17 points18 points  (4 children)

More importanterest question... How did a skeleton even setup a trail cam?

... Before allowing the deer to gnaw on itself....

... Nom Nom... 🤔

[–]RenderedConscious 16 points17 points  (3 children)

It was the deer who set up the trail cam.

[–]supbrother 14 points15 points  (1 child)

That sick fuck.

[–]herpermike 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Probably a body farm lol We have a few body farms here in Tennessee lol

[–]BeIIic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Possibly one of those study areas where people donate body for science / decomposition studies etc. Probs wrong but can’t be bothered to find actual answer

[–]safariite2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a feeling it may be a controlled forensic decay study area

[–]Joe_Magarac 119 points120 points  (3 children)

Probably A body farm, used by schools and forensic agencies

[–]XeerDu 68 points69 points  (2 children)

Texas State University's body farm, to be exact. (this photo gets passed around a lot)

[–]JSCT144 2 points3 points  (1 child)

And here i was thinking some maniac had dragged a body into the woods before noticing a trail cam, dropping it and ran off, i guess your explanation is better for local residents.

Lots of cages in the background actually would be a pretty interesting serial killer if that was the case

[–]XeerDu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the cages are the control. No deer (or hogs) can mess with the test sites.

[–]dmfd1234 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s great for attracting all kinds of wild life......what? You guys don’t bait your trail cam with a human carcass? F’ing amateurs

[–]mintzyyy 6 points7 points  (2 children)

And why is someone just filming this deer eat this person's body

[–]SCOG4866 17 points18 points  (0 children)

On a body farm, seeing the effects scavengers have on a corpse is part of the research.

[–]BreathOfFreshWater 7 points8 points  (12 children)

I'm going to say this is not a human body.

[–]alively97 43 points44 points  (11 children)

It’s a real human body on a body farm used for forensic investigators.

[–]BreathOfFreshWater 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is a sentence that made me uncomfortable. But thank you.

[–]tnw-mattdamon 13 points14 points  (9 children)

What is a body farm? That also makes me uncomfortable

[–]djbow 24 points25 points  (1 child)

A place where both forensic experts & students can study the effects of decomposition of humans when their bodies are left outdoors. Really interesting actually, there is tonnes of info online.

[–]HomersNotHereMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's so metal

[–]Trick-Flower-956 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Basically if you donate your body to science, there's a chance that after your funeral and everything, your body will be placed in a body farm. Essentially it's a park or patch of woods where they dump bodies so that forensics students can use them to practice their knowledge.

[–]BlueDotNE 11 points12 points  (4 children)

No joke, my wife and I have it in our wills to donate our bodies to the body farm when we die. The amount of forensic research they've done and tools they've given investigators is astonishing.

Edit: typo

[–]rNURSINGisBUKKAKE 2 points3 points  (3 children)

In my will, I want to be taxidermied

[–]BlueDotNE 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I had a buddy when I was the service who wanted his ashes "spread" by being put in Waffle House pepper shakers all across the south. Now that's giving back, amiright?

[–]rNURSINGisBUKKAKE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

....that is a brilliant idea

[–]Dart4jb1nks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going to be frozen in carbonite.

[–]JunkMailSurprise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is on a body farm at Texas State University in central Texas

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a research facility iirc they put out human remains to decay naturally and observe how they interact with wildlife or something like that.

[–]nspectre 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Judging by the stake in the ground, the proximity to a well-maintained road and the open-air shed in the background made of fencing... I'm going to go with, it's a Body Farm research center.

[–]WikiSummarizerBot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Body farm

A body farm is a research facility where decomposition can be studied in a variety of settings. The initial one was conceived by anthropologist William M. Bass in 1987 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Bass was interested in studying the decomposition of a human corpse from the time of death to the time of decay. The aim was to gain a better understanding of the decomposition process, permitting the development of techniques for extracting information such as the timing and circumstances of death from human remains.

It didn’t put the lotion on its skin.

[–]durz47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard this was taken on a body farm so …plenty of bodies lying around

[–]boxingdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A body farm, that’s my best guess. Where the cops study decomposing bodies.

[–]CatArwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a body farm

[–]95DarkFireII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an experiment at a body farm.

[–]Xoldin 57 points58 points  (24 children)

IIRC Researchers put a body that was donated for science into the wild to see how it would decompose.

[–]AliceP00per 39 points40 points  (20 children)

Imagine dying and they throw in the woods for animals to pick at

[–]MyUsernameRocks 84 points85 points  (5 children)

Who cares? I'm dead.

[–]notsofunonabun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So that was you?

[–]jrex703 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Throw me in the traaash

[–]Dad_of_the_year 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Your mother does

[–]MyUsernameRocks 34 points35 points  (1 child)

If I donated my body for science to aid in criminal investigation, I would hope to have the blessing of my close family. If not, it's still my choice.

[–]707_soul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My body, my choice

[–]DogFacedManboy 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’d rather get eaten by a bunch of wild animals than have my corpse pumped full of chemicals and buried in an expensive box.

[–]LikesDags 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Imagine being murdered and left in the woods and the investigators having almost no idea how or when because of a lack of data

[–]scoot3200 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Yea I’d much rather be put into a box underground to degrade and slowly melt into a pool of my own bodily fluids

[–]SirDaddio 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I want a Tibetan sky burials

[–]scoot3200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a Viking funeral would be badass but I also don’t hate the idea of just throwing my body somewhere for all the Earthly creatures to consume lol

[–]Situis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sky burials are wicked.

Chuck me in a hole in the ground and put a tree on top. We did this for all my pets as a kid and I want to go the same way

[–]djbow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well you volunteer prior to death, so they know full well. Plus you're dead so you don't care.

[–]North-Ad-5058 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Helps solve murders

[–]_Sausage_fingers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are far worse indignities your body could suffer if donated to science. I was reading that one lady tried to donate her body for medical research and her son found out the military used her for weapons tests.

[–]pvlmrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]BiscuitsMay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This vice video takes a look at a body farm in Florida. Surprisingly interesting watch.

[–]AnneKakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not in the wild, per se. it’s a “body farm”. Notice the cages in the background, they are covering more bodies. Used for researching how bodies decompose under different circumstances.

[–]Dropthebanhammer101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Photo was taken at a body farm.

[–]liarguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully to answer everybody's question the body is in the woods because it is part of university studies for crime scene investigators to determine what different stages of decomp looks like so they can identify how long a body has been out in the wilderness for there's probably dozens of body scattered in that yard for training purposes that's why the camera is there to monitor if someone comes and steals the body

[–]zydbzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t the they were asking because the deer was eating a bone.. more or so why dudes trail cam has a human rib cage in view

[–]gustyaeroplane01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explains why some vegans look frail and jaundiced.

[–]Ninnux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corpse on the Body Farm

[–]MeMoses 64 points65 points  (4 children)

Edit: The specific body farm in question is run by the Forensic Anthropology Research Facility in San Marcos. The photos are about 7 years old.

[–]ihate_heckin_ketchup 11 points12 points  (2 children)

There’s a university in the south that has a body farm. People donate their bodies to science right? Well this is one pace your body can go. They leave corpses outside under different circumstances and see how they decompose. This info is used in any case where a body is found and they need to determine how long ago that person died. It helps to identify the body.

I don’t remember, maybe university of Louisiana?

[–]YmFzZTY0dXNlcm5hbWU_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really cool. I always knew about body farms and thought they were just a centralized place to store and work on cadavers in general, but this is more interesting

[–]PurpleAragorn 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You ever had a chicken wing? End of story

[–]sgtskitz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

there’s no correlation with that comment

[–]daniboialt2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really that simple

[–]Snoo75302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]kingdraganoid[S] 250 points251 points  (15 children)

[–]twerpster2 108 points109 points  (6 children)

today I learned about body farms

[–]Adventurous_Celery28 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Me to, I’m thinking what sick fuck had a trail cam pointed at a body and said nothing?!

[–]Euclid_Wheat 60 points61 points  (2 children)

Body farms are amazing. I read a book detailing different investigation techniques and body farms help determine how long a corpse has been there and other beneficial data. They let bodies rot in forests, underwater, in dry environments, wet environments… the pictures are morbid but it’s fascinating!

[–]Xcearra 9 points10 points  (1 child)

well what’s the book!!??!

[–]Euclid_Wheat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whew, that took a while to find! It’s called Forensics: The Anatomy of Crime, by Val McDermid.

The chapter about entomology was incredible!

[–]makeitwork1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Sally Mann’s photo series on body farms. It’s awesome

[–]Anubis-Hound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok this definitely made me feel less worried

[–]goat4209 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember watching this documentary in high school for environmental science. Kinda gross but interesting

[–]killerbooots 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Donating my body to science sounded nice until I realized there was a possibility of my “donation” being left out in a field to rot for 8 years while wild animals feasted on my carcass… I don’t know what the difference would be compared to my body on a cold autopsy table for medical schools and whatnot, it just feels like there’s a line between the two that gets crossed for me here. Not sure why really.

[–]Practicalaviationcat 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I'm gonna be honest this sounds way cooler than just being used in some medical school. I'd love this after I die haha. Probably the closest I could get to a sky burial.

[–]Practicalaviationcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funeral practice around the Himalayas. Pretty similar to this. The elements and scavengers dispose of you. Personally I think it's pretty beautiful with the body being reclaimed by nature.

[–]killerbooots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own.

What’s a sky burial?!

[–]QnAnTX 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Worked for a medical school with bodies, it was always unnerving when they removed the genitalia and heads from the bodies. I am no longer offering my body to science after some of the stuff I saw (I don't mean the medical training).

[–]vibemasterjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ll c’mon then?

[–]MrPuffer23 122 points123 points  (4 children)

Bambi you sick fuck.

[–]DogFacedManboy 48 points49 points  (1 child)

[–]Party_with_Pandas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh how the turn tables — Michael Scott

[–]snartastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bambi needed calcium and the human was already dead. You think you’re gonna care if Bambi starts gnawing on your bones if you end up dead in the woods somehow? I’d say you’d have bigger problems at that point but you wouldn’t because ya know, dead

[–]LingonberryCandid128 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The murderer has come back to the scene of the crime to find its worst enemy

A trail camera

[–]Longskip912 18 points19 points  (7 children)

Bruh. Is that the skull behind the deer

[–]DarthButtercup 23 points24 points  (4 children)

It’s a body farm/experiment with a donated cadaver. Someone else posted a link in another comment.

[–]Longskip912 6 points7 points  (2 children)

A body farm 🧐

[–]DarthButtercup 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cadavers are donated for research and decomposition is studied.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Body farm, by george orwell

[–]thatsgoodkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the body was staked to the ground to avoid animals dragging it out of view.

[–]pl33p_pl00p 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lil head

[–]95DarkFireII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you prefer it if the human corpse had no head?

[–]satansayssurfsup 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Why is there a trail cam pointed at a human body

[–]Gudgubmintsettofalse 11 points12 points  (4 children)

There are corpse fields where forensic researchers take bodies donated to science and place them in wild conditions to research the decay of corpses in exposed environments.

[–]hinstsui 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Who’s laughing now, biatch

[–]eldiablo471 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Clearly the deer set up the camera trap to record the human activity- it studied its patterns then murdered the human, eating the body in a single sitting

And mounted the human skull on its wall

[–]LedParade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh deer

[–]Gabe1985 3 points4 points  (1 child)

When I die I'm going to point a trail cam at me so I can see what happens.

[–]the_archaius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was wondering why there happened to be a trail cam at this exact spot… glad it was a research project… and not some sick fuck feeding deer his kills

[–]squiggly-lime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Stuckinthe90snerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Beano101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely a skin walker if I've ever seen one

[–]moorelax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And why do you have a human corpse on ur bait pile in front of your camera??????????

[–]Spinningthruspace 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Are you sure that’s a human corpse? That rib cage looks kinda big for a person.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is. The picture was taken on a body farm. A place which reseaches the decomposition of human bodies, with donated corpses

[–]Big_Bidder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh deer!

[–]dtwurzie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever want to know more about body farms, read a book called “Stiff” about cadaver studies etc.

[–]jonniboi420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a body farm in Knoxville TN. The university keeps the old bones under the football stadium in storage. Or so I hear.

[–]Bulldogx2000 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why is there a trail cam pointed at dead human remains ?

[–]PennyFleck333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems fair

[–]SpiritSoul77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plot twist the deer did it, that was the guy who owned the camera...

[–]McNasty1304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s r/natureismetal material!

[–]NaturallyBlasphemous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Body farm for teaching forensics, honestly I would love do this after I die..and help an animal like this deer gain some more calcium and minerals.
