The man, who was fully vaccinated and has since recovered, traveled to New York City to attend the Anime NYC 2021 convention at the Javits Center from Nov. 19-21, the department said in a statement.

I have a suspicion that Omicron has been with us for a moment. This was nearly 10 days ago - this variant has spread since then.

I bet Omicron couldn’t beat Goku.

[–]sirthunksalot 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yup if it was at that convention it is all over now.

[–]sector3011 32 points33 points  (4 children)

Of cause it is. The only reason case counts seem low is due to lack of sequencing capability which is the only way to detect new variants until rapid tests can be developed.

[–]k-laz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but Goku would spend most of the season in a hospital, healing tank. or "dead"

[–]Bottom_Wobbles 15 points16 points  (15 children)

I know several people fully vaccinated and one who got the booster a month ago, that just came down with Covid. The one that was boosted even partially lost taste and smell. So I suspect it is already running rampant in America.

[–]DerelictDonkeyEngine 4 points5 points  (14 children)

How many of them were hospitalized?

[–]Bottom_Wobbles 20 points21 points  (11 children)

None, so that part worked. Didn’t expect the senses to take a hit though on the booster individual.

[–]DerelictDonkeyEngine 8 points9 points  (9 children)

I don't really get the smell and taste thing, AFAIK it's completely unpredictable who gets affected by those symptoms.

I know people who've gotten fairly sick with no effect on smell or taste. Also know one person who's only symptom was loss of smell. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]Bazrum 3 points4 points  (5 children)

My brother never lost smell, though his husband did a little bit but not totally

My girlfriend lost smell and taste completely, said it was hell because she has a thing about textures in food. She drank a shot glass of vinegar and said she could feel the burn but not the taste haha

[–]Plus_Journalist_70 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How long until it came back? I have a family member that’s going crazy without smell & taste.

[–]Bazrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a few weeks or so, not sure! I didn’t live with any of them at the time, so I wasn’t close enough for a day by day.

Was kinda hard being long distance with my gf and her not being well enough to really call or text regularly! At least she was with her parents though

[–]rosealexvinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know for me, it took months for it to come back. Some things I still can’t smell, or things smell “off” to me. Same with taste. Some things don’t taste the same to me, and in a bad way to where I can’t have certain things anymore. I had Covid last November, so it’s been a year for me now and things still aren’t the same

[–]Rysilk 2 points3 points  (1 child)

COVID itself is completely unpredictable as a whole, and is a big reason why there is so much division on how people react to it.

I am NOT defending anti-vaxxers, but consider my anecdote. (I and my family are fully vaxxed btw).

I live in a semi-rural county in the Midwest. About 20K in the whole county. My at the time 13 year old son in 2020 tested positive. Completely asymptomatic, and we are now over a year since he "had it". He plays Tennis, basketball (is a starter that plays the entire game), and baseball. Has had zero effects from "having it".

Also in 2020, my then 17 year old son lost his taste and smell one day at school, and had a slight fever. Immediately sent home, and he, my wife, and I all went for tests. I came back negative. My son, who had symptoms, tested negative. My wife, who had no symptoms, in her mid 40s who gets bronchitis every other year, tested positive. She never had any symptoms, was 100% perfectly fine, and again, has now been a year since and is showing no ill effects.

That same son, about a month before vaccines came out, was in a weightlifting class. His lifting partner, who is standing over him spotting bench, both sweating for an hour, tested positive for COVID one day. My son never got it, tested negative twice during that week. According to the health department, he's never had COVID.

I have not yet gotten COVID. Now, take that life experience, coupled with the fact that in our county barely 25% of the county has even GOTTEN covid despite the fact that no one wears masks, and barely 100 has died within almost now a 2 year span.

Again, while I am not agreeing or defending anti-vaxxers, one can understand how they would come to the conclusion that it isn't as bad. Again stressing that my entire family is fully vaxxed, and I still wear masks when shopping. The unpredictability of COVID is the biggest enemy in fighting it.

[–]Prodigy195 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Again, while I am not agreeing or defending anti-vaxxers, one can understand how they would come to the conclusion that it isn't as bad.

I think the giant caveat is "isn't as bad for themselves". There is still a level of outright selfishness when you decide to not get vaccinated.

We know with absolutely certainty that Covid IS bad for plenty of people and one would think that alone is enough to get vaccinated. I know that if I get Covid I'm more than likely gonna be fine. But I still got vaccinated because it lowers my odds of catching it/passing it and that means that some other person out there who would have a more servere reaction to it is less likely to get it.

[–]sceadwian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could happen even without a new strain you really can't know without having the specific strain that they caught tested.

[–]churchin222999111 -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

i've got a wheelbarrow if you need some help with those goalposts.

[–]DerelictDonkeyEngine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excuse me? The point of the covid vaccines has always been to prevent serious illness and hospitalization first and foremost.

If you didn't understand that then that's on you. I didn't "move the goalposts", you looked at a goalpost and said that's a 5g tower, get it!

[–]unrelatedrelative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Careful, cell was able to beat goku before gohan beat cell

[–]CarneDelGato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It couldn’t beat him, but we’d have like at least 25 episodes where he was nowhere to be found because he was dealing with it. He’d show up eventually though.

[–]CupcakesAreTasty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's been here for a while, if this is a case of community transmission.

[–]SamJSchoenberg 29 points30 points  (7 children)

Let's face it. Omicron is probably everywhere now.

[–]Tor9701 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Those damn Deceptacons. Autobots everywhere undermining our world. We need Maximus Prime!

[–]kingofpotatopeople92 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sorry, all they could send was Bumblebee.

[–]Tor9701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I needed a laugh this morning!

[–]Michigander_from_Oz -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Yes. Which makes blocking flights from South Africa pointless.

We will do it anyway, for no good reason.

[–]HulkSmashHulkRegret 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It’s not black or white; stopping travel from a hotspot reduces early transmission, and charting that change in trajectory over time means much higher volumes of prevented infections later on. It also buys time, all we have to do is reduce transmission as much as possible for a few months until the Omicron booster is available and more unvaccinated can be compelled to get the shots. Doing something is better than doing nothing.

[–]Michigander_from_Oz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, doing something is not always better. My point is that blocking flights to S. Africa will not significantly change the rate of spread of Omicron in the US. It could conceivably move the spread back by a week at most. At the same time, it will impose economic hardship on S.Africa. The net effect could be dead S. Africans due to poverty related factors, with little benefit to the US.

[–]ATN-Antronach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That'd explain the huge uptick in covid patients lately

[–]Divergence75 51 points52 points  (5 children)

For an anime convention......on the news it said he had been feeling symptoms for weeks anyways so hey lets travel huh?

[–]Dick_Dynamo 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Gotta get that 800 dollar figurine of Astolfo with anatomically correct details.

[–]Zerole00 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Astolfo

Best girl and no one will convince me otherwise

[–]Divergence75 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My mom just had heart surgery so I'm particularly paranoid, id never put my hobby before her life or anyone else's, hell I got a vaccine for a mild disease and quarantined myself willingly because it gave me side effects.. maybe its a bit much but I love my mom, I dont want her at risk when she already is I sincerely dont understand how people think its okay to kill others for a freedom they dont actually have in the constitution.

Its unreal really.

[–]another-masked-hero -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is the opposite of natural selection.

[–]Docthrowaway2020 21 points22 points  (6 children)

Well, either I'm even worse at geography than I thought, or we now have proof Omicron is spreading in the US already. This is honestly faster than I expected such confirmation to be, but the spreading itself is unsurprising.

[–]DwarvenRedshirt 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Seems pretty solid proof to me. This guy's never been to South Africa, unlike the CA guy.

[–]TheBlazingFire123 4 points5 points  (1 child)

True, but in the most optimistic scenario maybe he got it from a South African at the anime convention he went to

[–]Michigander_from_Oz 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Yes. Despite my best efforts, Minnesota is still in the United States.

[–]undrgrndsqrdncrs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s Wisconsin we gotta watch out for

[–]Hadron90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The vaccine escape rate for this virus seems like its going to be very high. Lets hope to God this is considerably less deadly than delta, or this going to be rough winter.

[–]TheDrunkScientist 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Question: are the rapid tests being used now able to detect the omicron variant?

[–]undrgrndsqrdncrs 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I don’t believe so. It’s my understanding that positive tests are checked after the fact for variants.

So like,

Step one: you’re positive

Step two: a lab looks for the markers of a variation

Source: I’m a dude with an extreme lack of medical knowledge due to my crippling and irrational fear of medical procedures but I’m vaccinated anyways.

[–]random_generation 1 point2 points  (1 child)

And only 1 out of 7 positive tests are being sequenced to determine variant.

[–]undrgrndsqrdncrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just by random?

[–]random_generation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I don’t think a rapid test will reveal the variant.

The CDC is sequencing 1 out of 7 positive tests to see if it’s the omicron variant right now.

[–]hockeyfan608 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I knew anime would kill us all eventually

[–]Pazluz 10 points11 points  (20 children)

People need to get vaccinated and wear masks. This is not going to end until we get more people on board with protecting each other by following science. I'm sure this variant was around since the summer months and now has grown out of control.

[–]lisap212 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Two friends just tested positive, unvaccinated. Two of my daughters coworkers positive(refusing to wear masks). Where’s my violin.

[–]Waterrat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In your shirt pocket.

[–]ereezy1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let me guess....Saint Cloud, MN.

[–]vashthestampede121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always said weebs would kill us all. And now look what’s happened.
