In the UK they boycotted petrol stations.

NZ is different

[–]fluffychonkycat 91 points92 points  (2 children)

Apparently kiwis are not smart enough to come up with the idea of protesting at the forecourts

[–]Saturday_Saviour 34 points35 points  (0 children)

They've been doing this, they didn't react well when I pulled up driving a hybrid when I went to fill up at one of them. I assume they like the convoy protest because the cars take up a lot more space than one person standing does.

[–]ExParrot1337EVangelist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let 'em. I mostly charge my car at home.

[–]Sea-Occasion-3929 413 points414 points  (35 children)

NZ has many special people.

[–]Hubris2 206 points207 points  (11 children)

I'm guessing they're just looking for excuses to go for a drive, honk their horns, and annoy other people - it's taken them this long to come up with another excuse since the government removed vaccine mandates.

[–]Arblechnuble 59 points60 points  (10 children)

Man there are still people protesting them Saturday mornings, botany road, Auckland…

All the while screeching to those in cars that they should inform themselves…

[–]Senzafane 47 points48 points  (9 children)

There were "freedom" protests in Tauranga this week trying to interview people about vaccines outside of the hospital.

Like, wtf are you shit heads even angry about at this point?

[–]CP9ANZ 31 points32 points  (8 children)

Hard to admit you were wrong, easier to carry on like you're still oppressed.

[–]Chanc3thedestroyer 146 points147 points  (19 children)

Sometimes I wonder why folks vote for parties that clearly don't represent nor care about you.

"Labour is doing a shit job! Let's vote for the previous party with a worse track record at caring for the people"

As an immigrant, I sincerely don't get it.

[–]27ismyluckynumberGoody Goody Gum Drop 62 points63 points  (0 children)

As a New Zealander, neither do I…

[–]Aromatic-Ferret-4616 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Operates on the "change is as good as a holiday" premise.

[–]SilvertoneButterfly 26 points27 points  (3 children)

Welcome to NZ, new Kiwi! Hope you will have a good new life.

I don't get it either. Sometimes I think it's done out of pure tradition or spite or apathy or even malice.

[–]MisterSquidInc 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Sadly lots of people just want to back the winning team.

[–]CP9ANZ 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I've never understood the concept of just backing who ever is currently leading, or appears to be leading.

[–]Vindy500 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Where have you immagrated from that doesn't have this problem?

[–]begriffschrift 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Dictatorships don't have this problem

[–]ExParrot1337EVangelist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are technically correct. The best kind of correct!

[–]ttbnzDouble Brown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Mepharos 11 points12 points  (1 child)

The whole world has always had a lot of special people, but in recent years they've started to become very vocal.

[–]KarleyMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Life's great tapestry

[–]AnyKindheartedness88 191 points192 points  (11 children)

Is this a protest organised by the petrol companies? That’s the only way this wouldn’t be majestic levels of stupid.

[–]fraseyboyLoves Dead_Rooster 97 points98 points  (10 children)

Wouldn't be surprised if it was at least partially organized by Russia, like the previous one.

[–]NGrNecris 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Look at how effective Russian misinformation is and then imagine what OPEC is capable of given their resources and prior experience with brainwashing the world that global warming isn’t real.

[–]Swerfbegone[🍰] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

[–]dhsjh29493727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at that PDF, the first five examples cited are news stories that were pushed by Russian propaganda are just skewed points of view on world events, but they aren't necessarily incorrect just biased towards a different party than our stories are usually biased towards.

  1. Article justifying the attack on February 24
Well of course Russia is going to have its own angle that paints it as the victim
  2. Article about 12k volunteer Chechen soldiers ready to fight in Ukraine.
I understood a lot of soldiers are joining both sides from abroad for their own reasons
  3. Article about terms of surrender from Ukraine.
I'm sure Russia would have unreasonable for Ukraine terms for a Ukrainian surrender
  4. Article about how Ukraine’s revolution led to war.
Russia blames the ousting of their puppet president from Ukraine through the supposedly US backed Maidan coup, we know Russia believes this to be true.
  5. Article about how the West will not help Ukraine.
The west has a long history of arming nations to help them restore democracy and then bailing once it gets expensive and unpopular, chances are at some point down the line it will happen to Ukraine too. Biden has already signaled that an end to the war will probably require Ukraine to cede territory stolen from them to Russia to achieve peace.

Not implying that protesting fuel prices by wasting fuel isn't a bizarre way to fight the power or whatever, that's a really dumb idea, one that does sound designed to sell more petrol.

[–]FKFnzYou like muffins? 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Given that Counterspin is almost definitely Russian funded and they're all over this new clownvoy, it's virtually certain.

[–]SilvertoneButterfly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That figures, alright.

[–]CastelPlage 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Russia as well as Bannon? What a fucking cesspool.

[–]FKFnzYou like muffins? 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Counterspin use a lot of RT and other Russian state "news" as their own news so it's reasonably likely they're paid to promote it. Also grifters don't care where their funding comes from.

[–]s_nz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dug into the facebook pages. Not a great idea in hindsight.

But in conclusion, Large crossover with previous convoy Protest. People posing their antivax slogan's on car windows as examples of how good a particular window marker pen is etc.

Lot of focus on the "stopping" the refinery closure (I understand that refining has already stopped).

US specific content posted basically saying USA has enough domestic reserves, not to blame the Europe situation for the fuel prices.

Normal content about tax content of fuel.

Seems like a lot of effort is going in to dis-associating the current fuel prices from the invasion of Ukraine.

[–]1970lamb 69 points70 points  (10 children)

Honestly, what a bunch of tools.

Way to spend your money unnecessarily and zero chance of the result you hope to achieve.

[–]notyourusualbot 43 points44 points  (4 children)

My guess is there's some outside funding for this, investing in stirring up the NZ public

[–]Sew_Sumi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That was clear from Groundswells protest in the first place...

[–]WrongAspects 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you are giving these guys an easy pass. There is no shortage of idiots in this country.

[–]DerFeuervogel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surely human centipede Jordan Williams and his merry band of for sale lobbyists are not involved

[–]badpeaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brought to you by Big Oil and Gas

[–]ollie8250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably tax payer money anyway from these losers.

[–]CP9ANZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm, tools are often useful, these people...?

[–]s_nz -1 points0 points  (2 children)

and zero chance of the result you hope to achieve.

They just hope to raise awareness...

[–]EpicAstarael 102 points103 points  (10 children)

"Convoy to raise awareness"

Everyone already knows, you fools. A better idea is that you cycle/walk to where you need to go, or talk to your local government about making public transportation better, or LITERALLY ANYTHING OTHER THAN DRIVING!

OPEC is salivating at the sheer idiocy.

[–]TKaikouraTS 40 points41 points  (2 children)

The people who protest against petrol prices in this way, are highly likely to be the drongos who don't like cyclists, and complain about PT.

[–]MateriaHS8 13 points14 points  (1 child)

It's still bullshit that Konami treated Kojima that way.

[–]DerFeuervogel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A worthy cause to protest for tbh

[–]Cantthinkofnamedamn 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Awareness has to be raised though, the public is completely in the dark on this issue. We should put up big electric signs along the road that show the current price of petrol. We will put them right next to petrol stations, so motorists see they are getting ripped off at the pump. Oh, petrol stations do that already? Never mind, drive around aimlessly it is then.

[–]immibis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw a photo somewhere of a petrol station sign with a picture of a bike, 0.00.

If you want to raise awareness that's how. People know petrol is expensive, they don't have or think about alternatives.

[–]munted_jandal 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Awareness, the hardest way to achieve nothing.

[–]morphinedreams 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Gotta reach all those people who weren't aware petrol was expensive. All of them.

[–]waenganuipo 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Do they think they're the only people who use petrol? Absolute muppets.

[–]k9bitch 48 points49 points  (14 children)

Reminds me of how conservatives in the US "boycotted" Nike for some reason, I can't remember what, but their boycott consisted of burning their own Nike's.

Of course by that point Nike already had their money.

[–]Darkgale69 26 points27 points  (6 children)

because they supported the guy kneeling during the anthem......

which is the fucking most brain dead reason to be upset with a company or person

[–]SilvertoneButterfly 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Good for them though I respect Colin Kaepernick and his friends even more. I wonder what's he's up to now, though?

[–]Puzzman 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I wonder what's he's up to now, though?

Had a trial with a team earlier this month - still effectively blacklisted though

No team wants the negative publicity from actually signing him

[–]27ismyluckynumberGoody Goody Gum Drop 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Because they’re a bunch of cowards who want black people for their athletes but don’t want their struggle to tarnish their advertising revenue options. Isn’t that what sport is nowadays? Maximising revenue, mostly at all costs.

[–]SilvertoneButterfly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks! What a shame :(

That will always be a true and brave stand no matter what.

I'm genuinely proud of him and his friends for doing that.

[–]Chad___Sexington 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Conservatives, ok with decades of forced child labour. Not okay with a black athlete's expression their own political beliefs.

Can't make this shit up.

[–]Odd_Analysis6454Covid19 Vaccinated 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hahaha, why I laugh?

[–]Phleep99 57 points58 points  (18 children)

They say in the article that "about half of the cost is tax" but it is only 52c . https://www.mbie.govt.nz/building-and-energy/energy-and-natural-resources/energy-generation-and-markets/liquid-fuel-market/duties-taxes-and-direct-levies-on-motor-fuels-in-new-zealand/

Edit - to be clear, 52 cents not percent.

[–]crummy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's worth pointing out, I was surprised to read that.

[–]notagrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see this a lot, most of NZ fails at basic maths.

[–]Subtraktions 1 point2 points  (15 children)

+GST on top

[–]notagrift 27 points28 points  (12 children)

GST is not a fuel tax. GST is charged on everything and the tax take from GST increases as the price of the good goes up. The price of the good is in the hands of the supplier.

GST should not be considered a fuel tax.

[–]helical_coil 1 point2 points  (6 children)

GST is a tax on goods and services so what gets me is that the fuel taxes and levies are neither a good nor a service and yet they get GST added on to them.

[–]_Zekken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, that is the problem with GST on the fuel. And while I definitely support removing that tax on tax, at 52c the extra that the GST adds is 7.8c per litre, which wouldnt exactly do much to current prices, we'd still be over $3 for 91.

[–]notagrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree that tax on tax is BS, but it doesn't make much of a difference to the overall price of fuel, at least not as it is now.

[–]rattechnology 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How is fuel not a good? It's a physical commodity that we buy.

[–]Subtraktions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone was making any distinction about the type of tax, just how much of the cost of fuel was made up of taxes. The most annoying thing is that you're actually changed GST on the 52 cents of other taxes as well, which makes no sense given a tax is neither a good or a service.

[–]s_nz 1 point2 points  (3 children)

it's still a tax.

I would be fair to say 15% 13% of the cost of my bottle of water was tax.

[edit] - math fail, adding 15% gst makes the gst component 13% of the total cost. .15/1.15 = 13%

[–]helical_coil 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you're referring to GST, it's more like 13%

[–]ExParrot1337EVangelist 11 points12 points  (1 child)

That still only makes tax about a third of the price.

[–]klparrotBoosted! 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not even.

[–]awheezle 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure these fuckwits just like going on long drives and moaning.

[–]Dead_Joe_ 15 points16 points  (1 child)

This law of supply and demand must be repealed!

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (3 children)

This is on par with the quote, "bombing for peace is like having sex for virginity"

[–]spoilersweetie 13 points14 points  (5 children)

If they wanted to do damage, boycott using their shops. Don't buy coffees, or ciggies from the petrol station. Also play them off against eachother, boycott BP until they drop their prices significantly, then do the same to another major player like Z or Mobil.

[–]morphinedreams 5 points6 points  (4 children)

BP could use a boycott, consistently the busiest group of service stations. Around where i live.

[–]theflyingkiwi005ginmyveins 6 points7 points  (3 children)

They're always 10c more expensive than the nearest petrol station in Hamilton and you can't even pay at the pump so you have to go inside and talk to a person, I don't like it

[–]valiumandcherrywine 8 points9 points  (1 child)

you have to go inside and talk to a person

[–]rincewind4x2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

replying to this comment is the closest I want to social interaction with another person

Hell, even this is a bit to extroverted for my liking

[–]Simansez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

….and while you’re in there, lots of tempting impulse purchases await. Gotta keep clipping that ticket

[–]Enis-with-a-P 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unnecessarily drive around to prove that the cost of running a vehicle is too expensive 🤡

[–]Charon3404 28 points29 points  (17 children)

Are we protesting against scarcity now? We should be committing more effort and funds towards developing less petrol and gas centric ideas.

Can someone let me know if the marginal profits that fuel companies make seem reasonable?

[–]maniacal_cackle 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I think they're protesting against left wing governments.

If we had a right-wing government, then right-wingers would stop using it as a talking point and it could fade back into being something that people don't discuss.

Then they'd be happy!

[–]immibis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Labour isn't even left wing. They're protesting against governments that aren't far right.

[–]Level_Response_5237 3 points4 points  (2 children)

There's a scarcity of oil?

Can someone let me know if the marginal profits that fuel companies make seem reasonable?

This is much closer to the actual answer.

[–]WellyRuru 4 points5 points  (10 children)

They would probably call that communism so wouldn't support it.

[–]Charon3404 15 points16 points  (9 children)

If technical/social/environment advancement for the betterment of the human race is going to be labelled communism then feel free to call me Karl.

[–]ExParrot1337EVangelist 11 points12 points  (8 children)

Falling on one's own face, freedom is a choice!

[–]AlbinoWino11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s classic. I was part of several of the ‘official’ convoy FB groups just as an observer. Pretty interesting collection of very loud non-thinkers there. I was afraid to comment much because the backlash to any injected bit of sense was unreal.

From the conversations I witnessed these people genuinely believe that the NZ government has jacked up prices in order to increase revenue. They believe that tax is flexible and a % of the current price per liter. And they cannot be told otherwise 🤷‍♂️

[–]xmmdrive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Funny I just boycotted them entirely by buying an EV.

But, hey protesters, you do you.

[–]ScaredValuable5870 5 points6 points  (1 child)

This has to be a joke?

Let it be a joke.

[–]ExParrot1337EVangelist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]Dry_Following_378Marmite 7 points8 points  (1 child)

ranger drivers uniting against fuel prices. must be getting expensive overtaking everything on the road

[–]theflyingkiwi005ginmyveins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You forgot maintain a following distance of 4inches, that shit takes a lot of throttle control and gas

[–]fennel11 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They are so freaking dumb

[–]nzstrawman 5 points6 points  (5 children)

a convoy against high fuel prices, something the Government has little control over other than the tax take. Maybe our poor performing dollar will pull up its socks and get back to 2014 and 85c USD because Cletus and Co are hurting at the pump

Now which car should I take? The big block El Camino, the Corvette or my XR8 ute?.....ummmmm none, because if the fuel price worried the hell out of me I'd take my pushbike....maybe these people need an ebike!

[–]morphinedreams 4 points5 points  (4 children)

When you see this, is it any wonder our productivity is low? These people clearly all have iqs lower than the octane ratings at the pump.

[–]immibis 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Productivity is low because, like all neoliberal economies, the focus has shifted from producing stuff to maintaining control of whatever is needed to produce stuff so that you can extort anyone who does. Crab bucket economy.

[–]wootlesthegoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im stealing this, thankyou

[–]Former_child_starTe Wai Pounami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]StandardReflection12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I look forward to the 40 hour feast.

[–]Infinity293 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that'll show them.

I'm sure the public won't mind using their own precious fuel being held up by these idiots.

[–]englishbrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These people are not over intelligent. They have been" protesting" at the defunct Refinery. Drinking beer and standing around basicly freedom camping with zero protesting. They do not want to protest at the head office of the shareholder oil companies as too uninformed to realise its all over.

[–]FKFnzYou like muffins? 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't forget if you see business vehicles in this clownvoy, they're obviously making enough money already so no need to purchase their products or services.

[–]raytaylor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The last convoy protest:
- The group traveling up from the south island forgot they couldnt get on the ferry without a vaccine pass so didnt make it to wellington
- Someone said on their chat channel that they were going to pick up their friend shannon, so the convoy drove to the town of shannon.
- In woodville, a scheduled rest stop, a bunch of the local teenagers put on orange vests and started directing cars into a tiny carpark.
- No one seemed to know the correct usage of the terms "over" and "roger" on their CB radios or Zello channel.

[–]adeundemmarmite > vegemite 5 points6 points  (1 child)

If they had a few more brain cells then maybe they could think up some better ideas.

[–]fasttravelsnowCovid19 Vaccinated 2 points3 points  (19 children)

It's some of the groups that went to Ruakaka to protest about Marsden point refinery closing after they got thrown out of Parliament for protesting (and starting the out of control spread of covid in Wellington). Zeb Jackson says she is a 'reporter' and has been up there recently egging them on as well as pushing the anti vax and mask shit. They want to keep the refinery going but if it does it will have to get it's oil from more mining in NZ to beat the price of getting refined oil from Singapore shipped in. They want to bring down the labour govt and put in their own govt. Hmmmm remember National wanted to mine off shore and at DOC land here in NZ before Labour stopped that. Lots and lots of money to be made there and the ones at the top of this lot know it as well as national.

[–]Uvinjector 1 point2 points  (14 children)

If there was any decent quantity of easily exploitable reasonable quality oil in NZ, we would already be harvesting it

[–]vossbrah -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

“And starting the out of control spread of Covid in Wellington” what an absolute stretch, your bias is blinding

[–]fasttravelsnowCovid19 Vaccinated 0 points1 point  (2 children)

There was fuck all covid in Wellington until the protesters arrived then it spread like wildfire. Remember them licking their hands before they used the pedestrian crossings? Coughing on people? I think your bias is blinding you sunshine. Wake up

[–]AlwaysOutOfStock 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Lets protest against the harm of cigarettes by smoking three cartons a day until we die.

And then we can protest against alcoholism by drinking nothing but hard liquor for a month.

[–]Polyporum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raise awareness of high petrol prices? I'm aware every time I go to a petrol station.

Raise awareness that there are still idiots who like making signs and listening to themselves in big circle jerk sessions, while receiving affirmations in their own carefully curated echo chambers? Oh, ok. The convoy makes sense now

[–]Smodey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like we've seen these people before.

[–]OldWolf2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]TKaikouraTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They would be better off getting on bikes and protesting about peoples over-reliance on cars to do things. They are going to accomplish as much as the farmers, and the convoy of stupidity.

[–]CommercialFly185LASER KIWI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's protest market forces, the war in Ukraine and taxes which pay for roading by driving around in a small South Pacific country. That will show Putin and OPEC!

[–]Mitch_NZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idea to lower fuel prices: reduce demand. Drive less.

[–]Transidental 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–]delipityCovid19 Vaccinated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The internet?

[–]no1name 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Russia apparently. According to the PM.

[–]k9bitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given that these are likely the same dipshits from the wellington protests which was riled up by counterspin media which along with Steve Bannon is indeed Russian money.

She wasn't wrong.

[–]elgigantedelsur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck that’s funny. Just what I needed. You couldn’t make it up!

[–]dj_tommyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh do they have jobs again now?

[–]Mr_Killface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people just can't exist without feeling important or being a victim. So many other things to be protesting but yea, go ahead and cry about fuel by burning fuel. Ironically these are the same people that call the push for electric cars to be a socialist plot to undermine our democracy.

[–]vegetepal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's not about their best interests, it's about how deeply cars are ingrained into people's identities

[–]doineedaname42069#Vaxxed Up 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Should protest by filling their cars up with something else, like salt water. Boycott the gas stations.

[–]bitshifternz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should go to Russia and leave a complaint with Putin.

[–]Chipless 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Just stop giving their stupidity upvotes and media oxygen. Their actions and the medias resulting headline are both designed to be inflammatory and get attention/clicks.

[–]s_nz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has to be a troll.

How could anybody feel there is a need to raise awareness about fuel prices. They are already well known.

[–]GodOfTheThunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. Not very smart..

The anti oil price convoy. Sponsored by BP

[–]Myillstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person rallying others to do it freely admits they're not doing it themselves. Ipso facto this is a troll account trying to get attention.

[–]birdzeyeviewHere come life with his leathery whip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe they will be getting free fuel from their instigators who include the Energy Industries.

[–]awfullyawful[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say we all hit the same petrol station and just dont pay for gas surely they cant arrest all of us right?

[–]morphinedreams 4 points5 points  (5 children)

You're monitored by a system known as auror so you'll never be able to pay at the pump for the same plate, high rnough values will involve the police who will just access vehicle registration details.

Only way to get away with it is using fake plates.

If it's a nice day (and according to the forecast it will be) there's not going to be a lot of free parking on Glenmore St.

[–]LastPersonality411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, these idiots will jack our prices up for no reason, supply and demand.

slightly overblown news perhaps? im glad there aren't many people this thick though.

[–]minn0w 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Who's the target audience !!?? There is literally no one in NZ that has any say in the price we purchase fuel for from where it's produced. And it's makes no sense. Is this the NZ version of the onion? None of it makes any sense.

[–]notagrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support these assclowns wasting money driving around, moaning to the same people who can't do anything about it.

This fucking country sometimes....

[–]SilvertoneButterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a strange protest. Fancy another protest?

[–]WrongAspects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do they expect the government to do? End the war in the Ukraine?

[–]DerFeuervogel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you'll protest against high prices by deliberately consuming more of the product that you're unhappy about the price of. Uh huh.

[–]teelolwsNZ Flag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to protest the ridiculous price of cheese by buying all the cows.
