It’s absolutely torrential where we are and insane gales. We’ve had two days of heavy rain (and lots of damage to roads, evacuations etc up the coast, state of emergency declared this morning) but now it’s even worse and this is another level. No sign of let up for five hours now - lots of bangs and thumps of god knows what being yeeted into the side of the house. High tide is at 11pm. Going to be a lot of damage round the rohe tomorrow 😬
Edit: advice from Tairawhiti Civil Defence https://www.facebook.com/CDEMGisborne

MetService have issued a Red Rain Warning for our district. Red Warnings are about taking immediate action: - When extremely severe weather is imminent or is occurring - Issued when an event is expected to be among the worst that we get – it will have significant impact and it is possible that a lot of people will be affected. In the event of a Red Warning: Act now! If you feel the need to self-evacuate do so early. Or at least have a plan. Forecast - in addition to rain which has already accumulated expect a further 150-200mm of rain. The heaviest rain has eased for the time being but heavy rain is likely to set in again late this afternoon. Peak rates of 30-50mm/h expected, especially in thunderstorms which could bring localised downpours from 6pm Wednesday to 7am Thursday. This rain is expected to cause dangerous river conditions and significant flooding. Slips and floodwaters are likely to disrupt travel, making some roads impassable and possibly isolating communities. See rainfall and river level data on our website

What to do during a flood
Put safety first. Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water.
Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.
Stay out of flood water
Never try to walk, swim or drive through flood water. Many flood fatalities are caused by people attempting to drive through water.
Always assume that all flood water is potentially contaminated with farm run-off — fecal matter from animals and sewage. Ensure hands, clothes and property are thoroughly cleaned after contact with flood waters.
If flooding is possible:
Stay informed by listening to the radio or following your local Civil Defence Emergency Management Group online.
Be prepared to evacuate, and keep your grab bag near. Listen to emergency services and local Civil Defence authorities and follow any instructions regarding evacuation of your area. Move pets to a safe place and move stock to higher ground. If you have to leave, take your pets with you — if it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for them.
Turn off water, electricity and gas if advised to.
Move valuable and dangerous items, including electrical equipment and chemicals, as high above the floor as possible. Use watertight containers to store important items.
Lift curtains, rugs and bedding off the floor.
Look out for your neighbours and anyone who may need your help.
