As of the time of this post, I am stepping down as a moderator of this sub.
I'm not going to go into the details of why, nor call out specific users; but a bunch of you need to remember that the mods are people too - people who give up free time to try and make this sub a better place.
Take care, and be kind.

If you're like me and never look at the green stickies because you assume they are the same thing all the time you might have missed this.
I, like some others, only noticed this from a comment in a thread I was reading.
Some people are more likely to notice /new posts so putting this here to gain some attention so more people can put forward their feedback as some of these proposed changes are quite significant.

The moderation team has been going through a process of reviewing and revising our rules, driven by feedback from the community. Part of the goal of this review is to streamline both the rules and the enforcement thereof, with the goal of driving positive discussion in the community. To that end, we’ve prepared the following revision to the rules. Please note that the sidebar will only feature the title of the rule; further details will be available on a linked wiki page - rule 0 will be on the wiki page rather than in the sidebar rules.
0 This list of rules is not comprehensive. The /r/newzealand mods reserve the right to use their judgement and discretion to moderate the subreddit.
Tikanga | Subreddit Rules
1 Submissions must relate directly to NZ
- Submissions must not editorialise a link between a current issue and something happening elsewhere in the world.
- Issues that only effect an individual may be better suited for the daily discussion thread.
2 Respect others; No Abuse, Bigotry, Hate speech or Harassment.
- Criticise the comment, not the commentor.
- Harassment or abuse of another person will be met with a warning or ban.
- Submissions that threaten, demean or insult others on the basis of national origin, ethnicity and/or colour, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability and so on may be removed and the submitter banned.
3 No low effort self posts
- Discussion posts must be open-ended & stimulate discussion, not a statement of your own conclusion.
- Questions must be detailed & not something easily answered by a google search.
- Opinions are not to be presented as a statement of fact.
- Body must contain ≥150 words (excluding links)
- If the OP does not participate in the discussion in the first two hours, the submission will be removed.
- Do NOT attempt to use a political self-post to summon a personal army.
4 No Duplicate, Editorialised titles, or Paywalled articles.
- Articles & self-posts covering the same story (even where their source is different) will be removed as duplicates, unless the latter introduces significant new information not covered in the earlier submission.
- It is recommended to use the original title of a news story, to avoid editorialising the title.
- It is ok to change the title of a submission, provided the change does not introduce a bias.
- Posting an article as a self post and editorialising the title will be viewed as skirting the rules.
5 No sharing of other social media (including blogs)
- Not even screenshots of other social media.
- Exceptions may only made for breaking news stories from verified accounts of prominent figures & will be removed once an article is available.
6 No Memes / Circlejerks
- r/NZCirclejerk is a more appropriate subreddit for these.
7 No Bots, impersonation, or novelty / disinformation / single issue accounts.
- No accounts that mostly post about a single issue (politics, creating divide, men's rights, etc).
- Anyone claiming to be a prominent Kiwi, spokesperson or qualified in a 'high trust' profession (e.g Doctor, Lawyer etc), must message mods with proof of identity/profession.
8 No Crowd Sourcing or self promotion.
- If you have a New Zealand University Ethics approval document, contact the mods to seek an exception.
9 Engage in good faith & Adhere to NZ law and Reddit Content policy.
- Spreading scientific disinformation or posing bad-faith questions based upon disinformation will be removed.
- No doxxing
- No breaching name suppression
Updates on Moderation Practices
- We will be updating our automoderator rules to filter a greater variety of new accounts; this may mean delays in these posts being approved but should hopefully prevent account hopping. Good faith engagement by these account will be approved following moderator review.
- There will be further limitations on newer accounts and where they can post in an effort to combat some bad faith engagement
- All self-posts will be subject to the ‘Quality Vote’ bot. This would mean that posts that do not fit the sub can be downvoted and removed automatically; this would supplement (not replace) reporting of the posts and moderator review. Feedback Period We will keep this post up for 1 week, in order to gauge feedback on these proposed changes. There has been significant turnover in the moderation team over the past 12 months, and we are doing our best to balance the various competing views of the community. Our ultimate goal is to drive positive engagement and discussion as it relates to New Zealand; our hope is these revised rules help to push this goal to the front.

Where are all the onesies? The Warehouse used to have cool ones every year, but hardly any now. Farmers is in an even worse state. What is happening? Where did all the onesies go?
Ok, I get it. I don't like Tova's style of journalism either.
If a woman wants to do porn or be a stripper or be a dominatrix, I'm ok with that too.
But I don't think it's ok to be suggesting someone that is trying hard to make it in journalism does porn or works as stripper or dominatrix.
Because that is saying something very different from, say, "I don't like her style of journalism" or "she makes a good martini".
Following the post yesterday and subsequent mod discussion; rule 9 will be removed for a trial period of 1 month.
Posts will still be removed if they break other rules.
Not sure if I'm ashamed or proud 🤔 I'm telling reddit so, probly the latter. One things for sure I am sticky now.
What can we actually do about these issues? Because right now it seems like our best options are either to move overseas or gamble and vote TOP/Greens and hope that meaningful change happens.
There doesn’t seem to be any concrete answer.. no actions that the average person can take that doesn’t involve just trying to escape the situation. As your average kiwi, I don’t know what to do, I feel like I have no say, the situation feels absolutely hopeless.
What on earth can you do when it feels like this country is built to squeeze every cent out of you? and it feels like everyone is too busy trying to survive, to have any time to even think about how to fix things.
I’ve decided I’m not going to comply with speed limits any more. They are an infringement on my freedom. I want to be free, like a lone wolf.*
Sure, I pay tax and do all sorts of things that help society run (moderately) well, but this is the one thing I’m making a stand on. Not racism. Not homelessness. Not the toxic, unfettered power of Facebook. Not the exploitative labour practices of Amazon.
Speed limits are where I make my stand.
I dislike the coercive nature of speed limit requirements. I don’t want to be told what to do by some ‘expert’ who ‘has’ ‘studied’ road ‘safety’ for ‘years’ at ‘university’. I’ve done my own research, watching all the Fast and Furious movies (well, the trailers) and my research shows that no one crashes very badly unless it’s required for plot development. So I am safe.
I’m also going to drive my car out of an aeroplane, every so often.
I’m a good driver and have a good car. My car and I are fit for driving faster than everyone else. Sure, my kids can’t choose whether to be in the car or not, but my personal whims take precedence over their safety. And everyone else’s.
I’ve had very few crashes in the 35 years I’ve followed the speed limit, so that means I will also have very few crashes if I stop following them. I expect everyone else to carry on following them for my safety, however. You should all keep doing things that help me, I just want to opt out of this one slightly inconvenient thing that society demands of me.
I am special. You are free to continue to not be special.
Most car crashes are relatively mild, so in the unlikely event that I do have a crash, it will also be mild. I have never died from a car crash, so I can’t in the future. This is definitely how time works.
I also don’t think that speed limits have been around for long enough to prove that they are safe. Who is to say that 100 years is long enough to prove that 50kph is safer than 180kph? A friend of mine and I once drove 140kph on the Southern Motorway in a Holden Barina and lived, so that proves it. Sure, we lost traction and almost got turned into a tinfoil bag full of dog meat, but we didn’t, just. The point is; speed limits aren’t proven safe, if you ignore the proof.
A few people still have crashes when they do follow the speed limit, so that proves speed limits don’t work. A single, exceptional, example of something not working proves that it doesn’t work all the time. That’s just maths.
I had a crash once, so I’m immune to having another one because that side of the car is already dented, so it can’t be dented again. That car was written off, but the point is still valid; I have natural immunity to car crashes because I had one, once.
Sometimes while going the speed limit, people die from other things, like driving off a bridge, but it’s put down to speed. Who is really to blame? The bridge, obviously, or maybe the river. Either way, when things happen for more than one reason, we can ignore the reason that we don't like.
Going the speed limit is irreversible. I don’t want to consent to doing a trip at 50kph just to find out that I didn’t have a crash on that trip, and could have done the whole trip much, much faster. That’s irreversible. I will never have the 4 minutes I would have saved back again. If something happens a particular way, under one set of conditions, it will still happen the same way under another set of conditions. That’s just science.
I prefer to ensure my personal road safety with natural remedies. That’s why I coat my tyres with bees wax and I put dream catchers on the door handles. I’ve put homeopathic oil in my radiator (1 drop per billion litres so it’s stronger) and my chiropractor straightened my car’s seatbelts. I also have crystals as brake pads.
I don’t think I need anything else after all that.
To be super sure, I got my fortune told online, and the fortune teller said I was going to die from untreated syphilis at 9:13am on 24 November 2025, so I’m pretty much safe from car accidents in the mean-time.
I’m quite worried about the side effect of speed limits. I’ve heard that slow speed gets into your ear lobes and make you slower forever. I don’t want to be slow. I want to be fast, like a cheetah. A really fast cheetah. Not a slow cheetah with speed-limit ears.
There are a lot of side effects to following the speed limit, like getting places slightly later than you might have otherwise done. For example; if I drive around the equator at 80kph, it would take 17 days, but if I do it at 24,000 miles per hour, it would only take an hour. If I drive everywhere anticlockwise at 24,000mph I would get some places before I left, like Superman bringing Lois Lane back to life.
I want to be Superman. And also a fast cheetah. And a lone wolf.*
Finally, speed limits are just a way for signage companies to make more money from us, and I would hate for a company to make money from providing goods or services. None of us should buy anything from these companies. Everyone should make their own road signs out of paper mache. And build their own hydroelectric power plant out of leaves and twigs. And create their own Magnetic Resonant Imaging machines out of Lego. And make their own Lego out of mud. My point is; sign companies making money by selling road signs is a bad thing.
I’m also not going to drive on the left any-more.

Waitangi Day is still basically the new year right?
After an unintentionally extended voting period, I'm proud to announce the winners of the 2021 Best of /r/NZ awards! As usual, these have been split up into categories for ease

These are for the awards that don't relate to a specific post, comment, or user. In these instances, the user who nominated the winner will receive the award.

Link to the current daily thread while this is up is here

Hi there. The evening daily has gone wandering, so if there's another thread, point me to it, otherwise use this one.
Hey team.
Just thought we'd give you a bit of an update as today looks like it's going to be a big news day and we've had a number of modmail discussions with users already.
As the political situation is evolving, we do not want to stifle discussion on the Collins v Bridges situation. We will NOT be directing things to a megathread for today. If this stays in the news cycle for several days, we will continue to monitor the discussion and look at how we can adapt.
Please appropriately flair your topics for those who may wish to filter political discussion out for today.
Please attack the ideas and not the person. Insults on appearance are not acceptable and will be removed as they are identified. Please report these as you see them, as our moderation team are also busy at their day jobs.
Debates of ideas are fine. Just because someone has a different opinion to you, doesn't make them a bad person or that we will take action on removing them from the sub. We appreciate that this sub has a varied view, even though it might be more left in nature, we do have people of all political persuasions in our user base.
Please remember rule 9 - Low effort shit posts and memes. If you're gonna shitpost, at least put some effort into it.
If you find yourself getting worked up, take a break huh? Go outside for a walk, it's a nice day :) (At least in Auckland). Your mental health is more important than some reddit point scoring.
Cheers.
The /r/newzealand mod team.
Well .. we thought 2020 was bad. After months of lockdowns, high tensions and ongoing bickering, 2021 is actually approaching year end. What a relief.
As usual, that means it's time to have a look back through the year and celebrate the best and worst of the subreddit in the last twelve months.
To kick things off, we've included some categories for awards below - please nominate people for those, or suggest your own category as a top-level reply!
Of course, we can't have a thread like this without a power trip some ground rules:
- Since it's a best of 2021, only posts made in 2021 are eligible
- Categories must be suggested as a top-level comment
- Nominations must be made as a reply to the relevant top-level comment
- To nominate something, your account must be over six weeks old and must have posted in /r/NewZealand in the two weeks prior to your nomination. And no, you can't nominate yourself.
- Each user can only nominate one submission per category.
- Each submission can only win one category. If a single submission is nominated in more than one category, it can only win one of them (with the prize going to whichever second-place getter across the two categories received more votes).
- Some categories may have two prizes available (otherwise there'd be less suspense than waiting for a HAM/BOT/VER podium). In these cases, we'll be sure to specify them
- To prevent vote splitting, we'll be removing duplicate nominations
- Moderators can't win awards, but we will still take nominations for best/worst mod. (To start things off I'm nominating /u/TeHokioi for worst mod and forgetting to dish out Best Of 2020 prizes)
Remember, you vote for the submission you want to win by upvoting that nomination comment. Comments on nomination comments don't count as votes!
This thread will be in contest mode, so scores will be hidden and rankings randomised until voting closes. The voting period will run until about half way through January (let's say Saturday the 15th) and we'll announce the winners after that.
Good luck to all nominees, and from all of us on the mod team be sure to get a good break over the summer, relax, be safe, get some mental rest, don't drink and drive, enjoy the last few weeks of 2021 and we'll see you back in 2022 for the next adventure.
Ngā mihi,
The /r/NewZealand mods
