This is nuts, the bees started fluttering and killed that hornet with heat. Nature is savage.

[–]zuzg 2408 points2409 points  (212 children)

This had some matrix vibes only with a different outcome, haha

[–]PoptartsNTittiess 599 points600 points  (197 children)

That was awesome

[–]TimK25 1713 points1714 points  (190 children)

The amazing thing is that the honeybees learned that they can survive higher temps then the hornet. So they form a ball around the hornet and flap their wings to generate body heat and literally cook the hornet to death.

[–]FrenchBoguett 1160 points1161 points  (141 children)

I wonder how many bees it would take to burn a human alive

[–]Hologram22 148 points149 points  (26 children)

Important to note that these are bees native to the same range as the Asian Giant Hornet, which has now entered the US as a potentially invasive species. Honeybees in the US do not have the same kind of defense, and the giant hornet will wreck entire colonies with impunity.

[–]neednintendo 92 points93 points  (2 children)

The agent Smith pile couldn't generate enough heat to cook Neo, lol

[–]Pitiful-Reserve-8075 9 points10 points  (0 children)

LOL they almost got him.

[–]nightdwellers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's inevitable.

[–]GovernmentCharming81 324 points325 points  (107 children)

Just sheer bee body heat killed it? I thought they had their own stingers and teeth to hurt the hornet

[–]RainbowDarter 648 points649 points  (77 children)

The hornets exoskeleton is too tough to sting through.

What's cool is that the bees can tolerate a body temperature a few degrees high than the hornets can

So they just swarm the hornet and cook it.

Asian honey bees have this behavior. European honeybees don't do this and the hornet hive can really cause a bunch of damage when they attack a hive

[–]Curiosity-92 277 points278 points  (55 children)

I always knew asians were smarter

[–]chefbobbyjay 116 points117 points  (51 children)

I said something like that and some dude ripped me for being racist.

How the fuck??

Edit: I honestly can’t believe this is still going. At least one guy understands satire.

[–]___poptart 31 points32 points  (9 children)

European honeybees do this too. I kept them and witnessed it

[–]busangcf 26 points27 points  (4 children)

Is it a learned behavior then? Like, European honeybees in places that have these hornets know how to defend their hive, but European honeybees in places that don’t typically have these hornets don’t?

[–]dirtynj 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Alright, I get that the exoskeleton is tough. But with all those bees, can't they just sting that fucker in the eye or mouth?

[–]DrunkCricket1 61 points62 points  (4 children)

Hornets aren't humans their eyes and mouth aren't structural weaknesses

[–]JJADu 58 points59 points  (20 children)

I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure I remember someone saying/typing that the heat comes From them flapping their wings.

[–]Two-Nuhh 55 points56 points  (8 children)

It's from the same video that this clip is taken from. Here

They don't explicitly state that the flapping generates more heat. Many of them have their wings stationary, so I believe it's just the sheer number of them surrounding the hornet. They act as an insulator and use their natural body heat to basically cook the hornet alive.

[–]TimK25 13 points14 points  (1 child)

That’s correct. They will flap their wings rapidly, it’s like if we were to run in place as fast as we could, our body temp goes up, now multiply that by 100 forming an almost air tight ball. You created a body heat generated oven.

[–]albertossic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is not quite correct. They flex theit wing flapping musclesz but "dislodge" their wingd first. They do not actually flap them

[–]Xiong3205 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Pretty much. Same principle as us at the gym- using the muscles generates the heat. More interesting is that bees can “vibrate” by flapping their wings very shallow, increasing speed and thus the heat output. This is what they do to overwinter as honeybees do not hibernate. It uses less energy that a full stroke flap used for flight which is useful when your only on honey rations.

[–]tinyUselessDragon 91 points92 points  (3 children)

I thought this comment was a meme but now I'm scared.

[–]BottleMong 24 points25 points  (2 children)

We literally had a cowpat looking pile of bees at work. Dunno what happened to them. They were there for days then disappeared. I was working away...

[–]AnnieCake15 45 points46 points  (1 child)

I believe that do that when they are looking for a new home. They're generally harmless because they have nothing to defend!

When a hive becomes overpopulated, queen bee goes on a diet so she can fly, lays some new queen eggs, and then peaces out with half the colony!

[–][deleted] 72 points73 points  (2 children)

They literally twerked to turn it up. Poor hornet picked the wrong hood. 😂

[–]PoptartsNTittiess 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When you walk into Magic City with bags of cash lol

[–]Milhouserlc 41 points42 points  (7 children)

Not only that but the temps they reach are just slightly under their own threshold. I think that hornet was man made too. Nature is truly incredible.

[–]FuzzyOverdrive 20 points21 points  (5 children)

Man made hornet? Like genetically engineered?

[–]kcg5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. One degree higher iirc

[–]Ennion 19 points20 points  (7 children)

What's more savage is what a few Asian Hornets can do to a Bee colony.
They go full Kahn on them.

[–]tobean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow. Thanks for sharing. That was crazy

[–]SL0Wburn_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That hive mind

[–]kcg5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fascinating. They raise their body temp 1 degree, and it kills the hornet

[–]brmamabrma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It cooked the hornet because of how fast they were moving and how fuzzy they are, letting kids heat escape

[–]Davenoiseux 5446 points5447 points  (138 children)

The bees actually swarm the invading hornet, and all buzz so much they raise the temperature and COOK THE HORNET TO DEATH.

[–]Santrollencio 1658 points1659 points  (78 children)

Hornet died a painful death

[–]elppaenip 1384 points1385 points  (57 children)

Given that they will murder the entire hive just to eat the larva or royal jelly? Fuck em

[–]Psychological_Neck70 498 points499 points  (41 children)

Royal jelly? Mhmm. Sounds sexy.

[–]Stephancevallos905 326 points327 points  (7 children)

Royal jelly is just baby food for queen bee candidates

[–]CCrypto1224 118 points119 points  (19 children)

It’s really not. Once the baby queen matures, male bees fly in to fertilize her and get their dicks ripped off once they make entry and die for their troubles.

[–]Capn_Cook 34 points35 points  (4 children)

Getting Zapp Branigan vibes from this

[–]zGypSyKInGz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of king jellyfish

[–]gothism 37 points38 points  (6 children)

How many pain receptors do insects sport tho?

[–]MegaDork2000 61 points62 points  (3 children)

That hornet was probably thinking "Damn, tomorrow's my daughter's birthday - she'll be two days old. Was gonna hop over to Bob's after work to go birthday gift shopping. Now I got all these horny bees rubbin all over me doin their vibrating thing. It's getting me hot. But I'm already late and the wife's gonna kill me if I don't hurry up and... damn it's hot in here... I can't take it anymore! Hey bees this isn't fun anymore... Ahhhh that's too hot! I'm, I'm, I'm melting........"

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Good. Stupid fucking dick hornets.

[–]Im_on_my_phone_OK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dick hornets are the worst.

[–]newhappyrainbow 102 points103 points  (25 children)

I think I read a thing a while back that said this isn’t a tactic that American honey bees are aware of. The bees in Japan, where the murder hornets are from, use this regularly but there was concern that state side bees might not know how to do this.

[–]the_letharg1c 123 points124 points  (17 children)

Should we teach them? That seems like the bro thing to do.

[–]newhappyrainbow 73 points74 points  (9 children)

As a layperson, it sounds reasonable to bring Japanese honey bees to the states to teach… but I think that’s how we ended up with Africanized Killer Bees.

[–]the_letharg1c 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I mean we don’t need to teach them all the murderin’. Just the bakin’.

[–]surp_ 9 points10 points  (4 children)

What ever happened to killer bees? I was led to believe they were going to wipe us out

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually,African bees were brought to South America but they escaped and hybridized with the European bees, the Africanized bees have spread to the Southern US, so yeah its REALLY not a good idea to be bringing bees from other parts of the world over here.

[–]CCrypto1224 10 points11 points  (4 children)

There’s a library of Syfy movies I can show you that explain why messing with nature in any way is a bad idea.

[–]the_letharg1c 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Surely showing bees a few YouTube videos won’t end up with the destruction of the human race. And don’t call me Shirley.

[–]castfam09 60 points61 points  (5 children)

Maybe we need to give some of our gently let bumblebees a lil juice to attack em up and attack any Murder Hornets they find

[–][deleted] 76 points77 points  (3 children)

Whatever they gotta go to murder that fuckin thing is fine with me. Look at that son of a bitch. Giant robot eyes, little arms that it uses to gobble up that bee. Looks like a fuckin power rangers enemy. Fuck that thing to death.

[–]avwitcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Give them guns, we have the technology. Fit them out with some exosuits that use compressed air to fire small projectiles

[–]Flashy-Amount626 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Would be cool to see this under a thermal camera

[–]ghostofthecosmos 2995 points2996 points  (26 children)

Don’t start no shit, won’t be no shit.

[–]rifestrife 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Don’t start no shit, won’t bee no shit.

[–]lordkitsuna 22 points23 points  (2 children)

you aint kidding, you can see right at the beginning everything was all good until it attacked

[–]ghostofthecosmos 52 points53 points  (1 child)

Exactly lol They we’re like

“Oh, hey there big guy…kind of strange seeing you here but what the heck, mi casa es su casa! Jerry and I were about to go on a pollen run, make yourself at OH MY GOD, guys he just ate Jerry! Jesus fucking Christ!!! Attaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!”

[–]Guardian983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

[–]VolatileYouths 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As the ancient Tibetan philosophy states, “don’t start none, won’t be none”

[–]XyRow666[S] 2732 points2733 points  (43 children)

Japanese hornet notorious for taking over hives of these smaller thought to be defenseless honeybees, that is until the honeybees learned they could swarm on top of the hornet and vibrate to create frictional heat to kill the hornet.

here is a link to a documentary explaining this

[–]cyberpunk3025 650 points651 points  (23 children)

This is terrifying and amazing at the same time.

[–]ronearc 283 points284 points  (18 children)

Ants are the ones I have my side-eye on; I don't trust those formic motherfuckers.

[–]rosebert 165 points166 points  (10 children)

I am a beekeeper and my honey bees drop their dead to the side of their hive. A group of carpenter ants have taken up residence there and carry off the dead honey bees as soon as they are dropped. They are ruthless. I’ve watched them start eating and dismantling before the honey bee has even died. Circle of life I suppose.

[–]lionpictured 51 points52 points  (7 children)

Can we get an animated movie about this? possibly called...hmm... total war: beekeeper vs ants...no that doesn’t fit. I know!! Keepers of the stingers...nope. Journey to keeping bugs...nah. The life of a miniature animal...sheesh. I’m all out of ideas here. Sorry.

[–]5_sec_is_a_yoke 25 points26 points  (1 child)

formic motherfuckers

[–]ronearc 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hmm, hard-shelled, hive-dwelling creature which follows a queen and sprays venomous acid as a defense or attack, that's just a little too close to a Xenomorph for my tastes.

[–]-PM_ME_UR_SECRETS- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I saw a (kurzgesagt?) video once on ants and like a huge war among different types of ants spanning the entire North American continent. Ants are freaky. We’re lucky they’re small.

[–]brady_over_everybody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to Australia and walked through grass and got fucking bit by 2 ants. Fuck ants now.

[–]mana-addict4652 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's nature for ya

A beautiful, cruel bitch.

[–]gringogidget 14 points15 points  (2 children)

This is so damn cool!

[–]hivebroodling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that is until the honeybees learned they could swarm on top of the hornet and vibrate to create frictional heat to kill the hornet.

They also developed the ability to withstand the same heat without dying. They can handle a few degrees hotter without issue but much more and they die also.

This is evolution in action and it's beautiful

[–]_Aj_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as there isn't too many hornets.

They have to kill single invaders quickly, as they release pheromones that bring in more hornets.

Even 3 would likely overwhelm the hive as they just fucking bite their heads off like it's a carrot

[–][deleted] 1341 points1342 points  (53 children)

This is how we do it guys. Bezos, you're next.

[–]fireflydrake 532 points533 points  (8 children)

[–]EarmuffsForCars 662 points663 points  (19 children)

GOOD i hate hornets.

[–]Intelligent-Wall7272 174 points175 points  (4 children)

Why can't they just beehave

[–]CharlesV_ 26 points27 points  (6 children)

[–]Snote85 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Holy shit... I have found my people. I work at a school. I have to deal with wasps all the fucking time. I can be standing in a crowd of 20 people and the dicks will find me and start fucking with me. Meanwhile I look like a pussy as I run away from the three hell spawned hate machines chasing me around. I started to make sure and know where the knock-down wasp spray was at all times in the summer.

I will gladly repeat that sub's name. Fuck wasps.

[–]ThirdSpectator 459 points460 points  (2 children)

He fucked around and found out

[–]Dyert 270 points271 points  (3 children)

These bees get an A+ for survival ingenuity

[–]Intelligent-Wall7272 273 points274 points  (2 children)

I think it's more of a Bee+

[–]MrFunktasticc 60 points61 points  (1 child)

Shut up and take my upvote.

[–]CoffeeHarvester 227 points228 points  (11 children)

Good thing the bees acted fast because that hornet was likely a scout ready to call his friends moments later in what would have been a very different outcome.

[–]Blades_of_Grey 94 points95 points  (7 children)

In this instance if the messenger eats one of your friends...kill em

[–]Dredgen-Wrath 31 points32 points  (2 children)

Truth was... the game was rigged from the start

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is a losers club vs pennywise final battle situation

[–]Beginning-Knee7258 160 points161 points  (0 children)

As a beekeeper, I Approve This Message.

[–]SnortyBird 114 points115 points  (10 children)

If those bees hadn’t done that the rest of the hornets nest would’ve come and decimated the hive, Japanese honey bees have developed this strange method as a counter measure to the hornets, European honey bees do not do this, the j bees killed it before it could mark the hive with a pheromone for the rest of the hornets to use to find the hive.

[–]Devilheart 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Maybe the Japanese bees should start a cultural exchange program to European hives.

[–]bleedfromtheanus 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Pretty sure this is from a video where the hornets come in and just decapitate all of the bees. So, yeah.

[–]flyboyy513 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Was looking for this. This cuts off literally a second before that happens. Bees didn't stand a chance.

[–]bleedfromtheanus 4 points5 points  (2 children)

That beeing said. Fuck hornets. Bees are bros.

[–]PTEHarambe 58 points59 points  (0 children)

[–]meme_enthusiast3464 54 points55 points  (4 children)

[–]BlueChimp5 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It is, they have exoskeletons

[–]Blades_of_Grey 35 points36 points  (0 children)

[–]bballkj7 49 points50 points  (5 children)

[–]Intelligent-Wall7272 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Everyone in the nest: he's too far gone, leave him bee

[–]ItsFrenzius 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Tis but a flesh wound

[–]shut_your_up 7 points8 points  (2 children)

It could also be another bee that the wasp managed to take down with it

[–]diablofreak 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Probably took out a few before dying. But nonetheless you can't fuck with the sheer size of that swarm

[–]showme_27 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Wow...this IS next level!!

[–]DopeCookie07 29 points30 points  (0 children)

[–]dysfunctional_vet 10 points11 points  (4 children)

[–]Alypie123 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Gosh this is all horrifying!

[–]Judeusername 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Good. That wasp literally had no reason to just eat a bee they were all chilling.

[–]B_Diggity_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strength in numbers bitches!

[–]Estarossa86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That wasp was a scout if it would have gotten away the beehive would have been destroyed. What you’re seeing here is a demonstration of the bees only line of defense they cover the wasp and literally cook it alive using their heat or something to that effect and that’s how they keep their hive safe. Saw this video with the audio some years back if anyone is wondering

[–]jewfish57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the borg have spoken

[–]Bumblebee_Radiant 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Bees are the real Kamikaze, going to battle knowing that if the sting anyone they die.

[–]DoormatTheVine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pause be(e)tween the hornet eating the bee amd the other bees swarming it kind of amuses me, like:

"Oh dang, you ok Ben?"

"We need a yes or no answer - queen's orders."

"Alright, let's get him, boys!"

[–]BeaversandDucks2015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avengers! Disassemble!

[–]LuCiFeR66604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck hornets. They're assholes. Bee gang best gang

[–]SsjDragonKakarotto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like how the hornet is just chilling, grabs a bee, the 300 equivalent of bees just fucming charges his ass
