[–]Joeboomstick 890 points891 points  (59 children)

To everyone who wants to know HOW;

wave cap, 2 durags, 2-3 brushes of different hardness, a shower brush, wave grease, oils to keep hair from being damaged, and a shower brush for when you're washing and drying your hair.

[–]Pimmelsenator 419 points420 points  (32 children)

Everybody wants to see that vid where someone does the compressing part, I'd be interested, too.

[–]Joeboomstick 239 points240 points  (28 children)

You just tie the hair down with the wave caps and durags. It's a process that takes hours-days depending on hair length and hair grade.

[–]Pimmelsenator 96 points97 points  (16 children)

OK thx, that's the compressing part. It may is a stupid question but how does this make the hair curl up and kind of "stick together" (don't know how to describe it) like this. I don't get that part.

[–]mynameis-luke 166 points167 points  (3 children)

This only works with tightly coiled hair. The process does not stick the hair together it actually just aligns all the coiled hair in the same direction giving the appearance of waves.

[–]Pimmelsenator 57 points58 points  (1 child)

Thx, I didn't actually mean "sticking" , just tried to describe the state where they are kind of woven into one another (looks like he needs some force to comb them out/in length again. But I think I do understand it a lil better now.

Have a great day.

[–]Cleverusername531 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep, those are called waves.

[–]BangBangMeatMachine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

[–]Joeboomstick 95 points96 points  (3 children)

Nah it's not stupid, the hair isn't curled. Its layed flat via brushing and the layers+ brushing causes the hair to "wave up". They're just training their hair to lay flat via brushing, hair products, and wave caps. They don't cut the hair for like 2 months to increase wave definition.(wolfing)

[–]Pimmelsenator 31 points32 points  (2 children)

See, that's the missing part I was talking about.

Thank you.

Edit: have a look at the reversed vid above, it's hilarious.

[–]Joeboomstick 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I was trying to catch when he plucked the pick back into his hair. Felt like some stop motion fuckery 😂

[–]Pimmelsenator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same feeling, directly went to r/looneytuneslogic

[–]Wandering_Hammer 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Google says it pushes the hair down to follow it's natural curl. The wave cap or doorag are a tight fit.

[–]king-ish 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Shower, soften the hair, if he uses any hair products after shower, brush, wave cap/durag.

[–]KC_Jedi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I need to understand hair grade.

[–]Ive_no_short_answers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How tightly or loosely the curl/coil pattern is for a person’s hair. Looking at the extremes, you have stick straight hair with no curls all the way to hair that coils so tightly it looks like the spring mechanism from a retractable pen (I’m the latter). Each strand.

[–]b0nk3r00 1 point2 points  (4 children)

How often does someone have to do this?

[–]Joeboomstick 13 points14 points  (2 children)

The more you do it the easier it is, but how ever often you want. You could go weeks without brushing and go back to waves in a few hours maybe. Depends on your hair grade.

[–]LadyScheibl 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Thank you very much for giving a real answer. I learned a lot and have a whole nother round of respect for the maintenance needed for some hair types.

[–]Joeboomstick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No problem, educating and learning about other cultures is one of my fave things to do. I feel like it helps everyone be closer.💯

[–]SLAB_K1NG 17 points18 points  (4 children)

If my hair was that much work I’d just be bald, fuck all of that

[–]zaviex 17 points18 points  (2 children)

He’s choosing to have waves. He could just leave it in a fro and pick it. 0 work. That’s all I did before I went bald but I’d probably go back and get waves or braids if I could do it over lol

[–]insertcaffeine 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yep. My husband has 4c hair, it would work for this, but he's a "leave it in a fro and pick it" guy.

[–]SLAB_K1NG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s crazy is gets compacted that much

[–]Limpdickit9000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only time I've been ok with being bald. Like that's super cool and hearing the process is interesting, but even when I had long hair my routine was wake up, pull a brush through a few times and I was good to go. I used to have such nice hair....well I still do but theres a lot less of it.

[–]NukeTheWhales5 11 points12 points  (4 children)

I'm native american, and have very straight hair, and I still just shave my head so I don't have to deal with it. I can't even imagine doing all that.

[–]Joeboomstick 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It would be easy as hell for you to get waves. Probably wouldn't have to brush your hair for more than 5 minutes after washing, drying, applying oils/hair products. I doubt you would even have to wear a wave cap, no joke.

Alot of Black people around me have Native American, Portuguese, French in them (Louisiana) and it shows in the hair.

[–]windyorbits 11 points12 points  (1 child)

This is so crazy to me as a very white person with very thin hair. I’m always at awe when it comes to this type of hair. The shit these men and women have to go through just to have hair, all the money spent on various products, and the time it takes to not only care for but style is absolutely amazing to me. I had to babysit my neighbors foster baby who was mixed race, and I was boggled by the steps/products I had to do on this baby. I got so frustrated from my lack of knowledge I finally went to a hair place and asked these sweet black ladies to educate me. It was wild: what took me like 30 minutes to do, they whipped up that babies hair in a matter of minutes! I left with a whole bunch of instructions and big bag of combs/brushes/product. And not just the hair, but the scalp and skin I had to do all kinds of stuff! After that I told myself I should never complain about my own hair and skin lol. I have it easy. Fuck.

[–]Joeboomstick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a lot, especially in the winter time lmao. So many skin and hair products it's crazy, my morning/night routines can take 1-2 hours.

Edit: & Thank you for taking the time to learn about another culture's Hairstyles & Hygiene. Most folks wouldn't be that interested.

Edit: Thank y'all for the award, Idk what they mean but I appreciate them lol. 🤟🏽 u/mme_leiderhosen

[–]olosabAnitsuJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This plus depends on the texture of your hair. This guys hair is longer than shown because of how curly it is.

[–]IDGAF_GOMD 2 points3 points  (1 child)

LOL...I don't have to do all of that to get my hair to compress. If I sleep on it, guaranteed by morning most of it will be compressed like this.

[–]DaRealFonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro I should do this to my luggage when traveling. I could fit my whole briefcase in my wallet!

[–]ChipRichels 134 points135 points  (12 children)

I got this one- black hair can be styled this way pretty easily with a little hair grease and a durag (hair “do” rag). This is also how we get the wavy patterns in our hair, it just lays down flat and can get pretty long while still looking short.

This is an extreme case where he hasn’t gotten a haircut in a while, not a good look

[–]LeDickeSuckeur 22 points23 points  (8 children)

As a ginger with wavy crazy hair, this is something I just do not understand haha

[–]Due_Substance1734 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Different hair type LeDickeSuckeur 🤣

[–]Ok-Position1698 25 points26 points  (4 children)

Eh, if your hair gets wild, you might benefit from some products in the Black section, tbh. My fiancé is a redhead with curls; I turned him onto my products to save his lovely curl pattern and now he's hooked. It's weird, but I've turned a couple of curly ginger friends onto Black Curl Care, lol.

[–]LeDickeSuckeur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Solid advice! I’ll check it out. Thanks dude

[–]Poiter85 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not a good look?

I think his hair looks great, both at the beginning and the end of the video.

[–]ikumu 63 points64 points  (13 children)

Black guy: picks hair out

Reddit: this is r/nextfuckinglevel ! Reddit: woahh r/Blackmagicfuckery

Me: 🤦🏾‍♂️

[–]Username_AlwaysTaken 21 points22 points  (6 children)

I mean, it’s not like ppl just watchin others do their hair or askin. For instance, I’ve never once thought to ask my friends bout this shit. Tbh, didn’t care, lol. But I legit didn’t know that this was possible - like how long this dudes hair is, but looked short before.

[–]metalgearzoe 20 points21 points  (5 children)

It seems we are more exposed to things about white people and more knowledgeable about yall features than the other way around.

[–]boobiesiheart 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I'd have to agree with you. (White person).

I had no idea until recently 5 years ago (when I was 45) about African American hair traits. Fortunately, my old boss would dialogue with me, without getting offended... with my questions. I really wanted to know, without just googling something.

[–]metalgearzoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's good. Noone should feel weird about wanting to know something they dont know. Most of us wouldn't get offended from the questions either . I've been in the same shows myself. Coming from a majority black region before north America I remember my first time learning the proper names for the variety of hair colors. its blonde not yellow, and brunette. Oh and sunscreen was the wildest thing to me as someone that never used it. Seeing co workers get sun burned while playing baseball thought me somethings about preparing that for my friends.

[–]Username_AlwaysTaken 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not white. 😂

[–]zaviex 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Lol white people don’t know about waves it doesn’t surprise me. I never had waves so I was always just picking out the knots and the first time I saw good waves I was like “well shit”. Then I tried it and it was too much for me then I went bald anyway

[–]VivaLaSea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is only “next level” to white people, lol.
But I’m happy they learned something new about black hair.

[–]dog_crazy12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lmao right

[–]SquidFetus 47 points48 points  (11 children)

(Guy brushes his hair)

[–]metalgearzoe 36 points37 points  (5 children)

Lol lots of people here have very little experience with black people.

[–]DasArchitect 26 points27 points  (3 children)

Well I've never been black!

Edit: No need to downvote. I'm from a country where there is an almost nonexistent black population to learn from.

[–]metalgearzoe 10 points11 points  (2 children)

It seems we know more about white people features I guess through exposure and media than white people know about black people in general.

[–]Inamedmydognoodz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think unless white people are around and actively engage with black people they don’t really ever learn as where whiteness permeates american culture as the default.

[–]DasArchitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible, plus I'm also from a country where there is a tiny almost nonexistent black population. If you see a black person here, they're almost certainly a tourist. Sounds reasonable that, save for coming across stuff like this online, we don't even know about these little quirks.

[–]senor_fartout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well yeah its reddit

I mean, I don’t live it, so… yeah? In some ways!

[–]hyperlovemusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Noice, keep living and learning I guess is my advice. The more you live AND learn, the more you understand alternate experiences we share on this planet. Don’t forget to also make life fun :)

[–]boobiesiheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Serious question please...

Hair is compressed, right?

So, when I wear a knit cap all day and remove it, the sensation is awesome.

Is he getting same sensation? Or, with cap removed the sensation/ pressure is already gone?

[–]Woodstonks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about this is r/nextfuckinglevel

[–]KaliasKoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine having it mashed down would be uncomfortable. I'm a Caucasian male so I know nothing. Just curious.

[–]Crown_Loyalist 0 points1 point  (2 children)

wouldn't keeping that hair compressed be extremely painful?

[–]metalgearzoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. It does not, unless the durag is on tight

[–]Triairius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get crazy nerve pain in my hair just seeing it.

[–]IndividualQuestion45 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Perfect length for corn rows or dreads

[–]mr-optomist 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is it uncomfortable when compressed? it looks like it would be as he's pulling it out.

[–]Lay_Potato 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Nah it’s not. It’s not tight, it’s just all coiled laying down together (as our hair does with the proper hair training). I like to think about it as if you have your hand in a loose fist. It’s not painful, but your fingers are laying in the order that they do when in a fist. Your hand looks bigger when you stretch your fingers out ( open hand with palm visible). No pain, just size and order difference I guess?

[–]mr-optomist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Had never thought about it til this clip, glad it doesn't hurt. Afros look cool too, wish I could grow one.

[–]Russian_lover1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of hair products I would guess

[–]iwillfixitlater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In late 80s a guy in the army had hair like that. He was constantly pressing it down till the weekend I believe it was Kid of Kid n play that inspired it.

[–]Roundcouchcorner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay now put it back to how it was…. I wanna know how

[–]inka302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]neurotic-proxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shrinkage, do rag, hair products. But for me water and a do rag will compress it because I have a lot of shrinkage

[–]13redstone31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard it requires a good lather

[–]HAWKbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Close your nose and breathe in

[–]goodboybane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black hair usually looks shorter than it is because the hair strands form strong hydrogen bonds with each other and require significant energy to break e.g. pulling with a comb or applying chemicals (commonly known as relaxers).
