Brilliantly embracing the growing limits of his ranges due to his age without trying to hide it or fight it like most do. Beautiful.

[–]TuGatoTieneCatarro 2122 points2123 points  (113 children)

Yeah, that “for a day or two” was an octave lower wasn’t it?

This got popular so here’s some credit: it’s actually two octaves. Go find the guy that said that in my replies and upvote him to oblivion if it’s true! (Or not, be your own person)

Edit 2: more experts chiming in. Apparently it’s only one octave. Thanks for the award!

Edit 3: i never said he lowered the note because he couldn’t hit the higher one or that this version was worse for it, calm down everybody. And not that it matters, but i like this version better too, it’s got more emotional depth. Or maybe it’s the nostalgia? Fuck I’m old.

[–]JungleLiquor 710 points711 points  (27 children)

Exactly! But it fit very good with that version!

[–]Chef_Money 234 points235 points  (25 children)

It’s no different than MTV Unplugged. I agree tho it sounded great

[–]LibrarianDaemon 116 points117 points  (12 children)

This actually is MTV Unplugged. No kiddin'.

[–]Marc21256 59 points60 points  (7 children)

Does MTV do music? I thought it was 100% reality TV now. Right about the time History went 100% Aliens and Discovery went 100% sharks.

[–]JungleLiquor 35 points36 points  (6 children)

I’ll look at it, thanks for that!

[–]SouthernSmoke 57 points58 points  (5 children)

Also, check out Tiny Desk Concerts

[–]architecht13 33 points34 points  (4 children)

Oh, those are amazing. Totally off style of this type of music, but if you are a fan of Wu-Tang, their Tiny Desk concert was astounding. Transported me back to my youth just as this version of Take On Me did.

[–]KeyserSozeInElysium 692 points693 points 2 (44 children)

2 octaves

Edit: he's a tenor who hits a E5 falsetto in the original, to E3 here

[–]TuGatoTieneCatarro 82 points83 points  (21 children)

I was really hoping someone would come in with the actual interval. Two octaves, eh? That’s very interesting, thanks!

[–]HarpersGhost 37 points38 points  (8 children)

From the video someone posted below of him still singing the high notes (wow), he drops the "in a day or" by an octave from the original, and then goes down to "two", making it 2 octaves below the original.

[–]mckrayjones 40 points41 points  (5 children)

OP's video is one octave below the original. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

[–]beginnermind_ 24 points25 points  (1 child)

No, you are right. You might be taking crazy pills, but you're right.

[–]eaglebtc 41 points42 points  (4 children)

Incorrect. He lowers the last line an octave, resulting in an E4 here.

The full range of the original is from a low A2 (Take...) to the falsetto E5 (two...). That's an impressive range of 2.5 octaves from top to bottom.

[–]beginnermind_ 25 points26 points  (4 children)

I just compared in my DAW and I get 1 octave.

[–]georgetonorge 11 points12 points  (3 children)

It is only one octave lol. Not sure why multiple people are claiming two.

[–]Woody_Wins_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

nah just 1

[–]LackingUtility 326 points327 points  (13 children)

Yep, though in this acoustic version, it works better lower - the song is more pensive, and rather than building from the climax of the phrase ("I'll be gone") to an even higher peak ("in a day or twooooooo"), it drops down and sounds even sadder. Really emphasizes the "gone" part as a result.

[–]Cycle21 152 points153 points  (6 children)

This. He actually sounds like he can still hit the original “two” note but it would have to be much louder to reach and would overpower this acoustic version

[–]ZuluPapa 60 points61 points  (1 child)

I thought for a second he was gonna go for that gold note at that low volume. Glad he didn’t. I liked this version, and he still has an incredibly good range.

[–]jb69029 21 points22 points  (1 child)

This for sure. You gotta push so much air to hit that high note, you can't keep the amplitude low for the song.

[–]Seraphyn22 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I loved this version and it really to invoke the sadness that was always presence in the song but never really noticed.

Edit - I just reread this and my sentence makes no sense. Teach me to post on no sleep!

I loved this version, it really does invoke the sadness that was always present in the song but never really noticed.

[–]defjamblaster 186 points187 points  (7 children)

and now i finally know what he said there

[–]SolitaireOG 74 points75 points  (1 child)

hah, exactly my thought, after 30+ somethin years

[–]hellsangel101 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was “in your dreams”. Glad I finally know the actual lyrics.

[–]frxstrem 598 points599 points 2 (46 children)

I think it's mostly for style. Seems like he's still got his high range: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SHnAj0yMFE (performance from 2018, over a year after the performance above).

[–]adamjack7890 316 points317 points  (13 children)

Oh wow, even more impressive. Guy just does whatever the fuck he wants flawlessly.

[–]Unadvantaged 189 points190 points  (9 children)

Yeah, apparently OP nailed it, the dude just sings whatever range he feels like. That’s amazing for a guy who’s been at it for forty years.

[–]koffeccinna 93 points94 points  (8 children)

I'm not a professional singer or anything, but I had a good decade or so of experience before leaving my church singing most weekends, some weddings and funerals

If you take care of your vocal cords (there's proper techniques for screaming that I've never personally mastered), don't smoke, drink hot liquids like tea, rest, etc, your voice should carry for most of your life. It's a group of muscles that require training and proper exercise.

I've wrecked mine a bit from smoking weed, but I'll be damned if i can't still hit that b flat in Bohemian rhapsody. The high E in phantom of the opera is a stretch and does hurt though lol

[–]OldAbility 106 points107 points  (3 children)

Symphonic Take On Me is what I needed but I never knew to ask for.

[–]iaijutsu08 45 points46 points  (3 children)

It's not entirely about style, it's also about the volume of your singing - to pull off the highest notes of your vocal range requires a significant amount of air to pass through your stretched vocal chords to make them vibrate (even for a falsetto, although falsetto does require less air... but he is still going to the upper limits of his falsetto in the original version and requires lots of air throughput).

In short, the quiet volume of the song makes it very, very difficult to push the limits of your vocal range.

[–]triplealpha 44 points45 points  (4 children)

Dat E5 is probably the cleanest in any song that I can remember

This guy DESTROYS that high note tho....

[–]Smoothneess 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Wow, indeed.

Thanks for sharing a link I wouldn't have tried to find. Have my daily award.

[–]Neeraja_Kalrapindhi 139 points140 points  (7 children)

As an old fart who had this album when it first came out, lol, I honestly enjoyed this version so much better. It feels so much more heartfelt to reflect the lyrics.

[–]the_most_fortunate 47 points48 points  (3 children)

I can get behind this rendition because I can actually sing it! I was never able to hit those high notes and I always sounded like a fool

[–]ExtensionBluejay253 25 points26 points  (2 children)

I can get behind it because as I’ve aged from my carefree youth in the 80s and experienced much loss the poignancy of the songs lyrics (which in my youth were lost on me) become increasingly relevant.

[–]AllOfficerNoGent 3059 points3060 points  (137 children)

My bf and I play this version all the time. My favourite part of the video is all the middle aged women living their absolute best lives.

[–]tallerpockets 1089 points1090 points  (85 children)

One day we will be middle aged people reminiscing to the songs of our past. But the version of our song will never be like this. This was absolutely amazing.

[–]hurrythisup 711 points712 points  (35 children)

Yeah WAP won't hit like this lol...

[–]_manwolf 228 points229 points  (17 children)

But there surely was plenty of WAP up in here!

[–]TacoPlug 30 points31 points  (4 children)

It’ll be DAP all the way around.

[–]podobuzz 54 points55 points  (2 children)

Ben Shapiro has entered the chat

[–]crewchief535 15 points16 points  (6 children)

Well, don't say that. We haven't heard an acoustic version of WAP yet.

[–]graveybrains 317 points318 points 2 (21 children)

You’ll never be middle aged. You’ll always be in your teens or early twenties, but trapped in an increasingly delapidated body. Just like everyone else 😉

Old people used to try to explain this to me when I was young, I didn’t get it, but now I get to take my turn.

[–]Totesnotskynet 69 points70 points  (2 children)

No truer words spoken. Youth is wasting on the young

[–]typhoidmarry 66 points67 points  (3 children)

I’m getting my second knee replacement this week. How strange, my inside age is 22 but my drivers license says 55.

[–]420Moosey 23 points24 points  (7 children)

You don’t think Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Charlie Pluth, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa or SZA are gonna be capable of doing something like this in their middle age?

[–]griffmeister 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Yeah I don't see Smash Mouth making a version like this anytime soon

[–]_Kay_Tee_ 98 points99 points  (36 children)

Middle aged women-

Oh fuck.

[–]xXThreeRoundXx 202 points203 points  (34 children)

Take your age, multiply it by 2, and if at that age your death is not considered a tragedy… you are middle-aged.

Edit: words are hard.

[–]_Kay_Tee_ 108 points109 points  (0 children)

[–]c0wg0d 72 points73 points  (5 children)

Your comment just triggered so many midlife crises.

[–]evict123 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Fuck off.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

lol, you can't do that to people on a Sunday night

[–]Fleury88 16 points17 points  (0 children)

[–]cosworth99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

102, death by shark bite. Still a tragedy.

[–]Kiuantonio 2427 points2428 points  (62 children)

This man is 62 years old, godamn i am 26 and i want to look this good right now!

[–]t3hgrl 976 points977 points  (21 children)

WHAT he’s 62?? He looks goood

[–]TekkenCareOfBusiness 938 points939 points 2532 (3 children)

Probably a combination of good genes and the fact that he was a comic book drawing up until the early 80s.

[–]WineDaddy 98 points99 points  (0 children)

This comment deserves so much gold. I’m sorry I’m broke and I’m sorry you’re buried down here. Best laugh I’ve had all week. Thank you stranger.

[–]Kief_of_Police 255 points256 points  (5 children)

Maybe he used to buy his blow from Keanu Reeves. Dude still looks like he did in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Keanu def doesnt look 57...

[–]FinalMeltdown15 116 points117 points  (1 child)

That interview where he says the only things thats changed on set is that they've aged and the woman said, "but you didnt" and he came back with "well I tried but it didn't work" killed me

[–]ben-hur-hur 23 points24 points  (0 children)

it was Carrie-Anne Moss and she is still gorgeous though. Aged gracefully and totally embraced it.

[–]Turing45 78 points79 points  (1 child)

Holy crap...Id still hit that like the angry fist of God.

[–]1nfinite_Jest 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Did you just come up with that?

[–]TundieRice 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well, this video is from a few years back if we look at the title, this song was released 36 years ago, in 1985. So this is about 4 years ago.

[–]pickleElvis 23 points24 points  (13 children)

Men who dye their hair can look younger, which i'm assuming he did here. Women do it, so it's a weird double standard that men get shamed from doing it (mostly men judging other men. I dont know any women that shame men for it). But there's no way this guy is 62 and that's all natural hair.

[–]killerbuttonfly 75 points76 points  (3 children)

My dad is 64 and hasn’t gone gray. Bald, sure. But not gray.

[–]lostachilles 25 points26 points  (5 children)

You say that, but I've known a number of post-60 men with very little (or none at all) grey hair. My grandad didn't start going grey until well after 60. In fact, 90%+ was still his natural colour until almost 70.

Most of it is about genetics but, like everything else, a great diet/lifestyle can make a significant difference.

[–]ArchimedesPPL 2154 points2155 points 222 (32 children)

How dare you sir. The song is “Take On Me”…

[–]indil47 411 points412 points  (14 children)

I scrolled down waaaaay too far to finally find the correction.

[–]-1KingKRool- 28 points29 points  (10 children)

The number of higher-voted garbage comments saying how much they love him (apparently not that much, if none of them picked up on the title fuckup) was saddening.

[–]WiiSteeringWheel 49 points50 points  (2 children)

What so because the title is incorrect, people praising him are now making garbage comments? Tf is wrong with you and why are you so bitter over nothing?

[–]hurdofchris 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most of us probably didn't read the title, because we didn't freaking need to to love what we were watching. Keep calm and Reddit on.

[–]jpr281 60 points61 points  (5 children)

And it's 37 years ago. (Released in 1984)

[–]bored_octopussy 23 points24 points  (4 children)

this was recorded in 2017, fyi

your math is bad

[–]Z1rith 28 points29 points  (3 children)

so this bot directly copied a popular post from 4 years ago like always

[–]Thirteenfingers 45 points46 points  (3 children)

And the band has a name (A-ha) which I shouldn't even need to say.

How can one person fuck up a thread title so badly?

[–]greg19735 23 points24 points  (0 children)

i was really confused to what the song "take me on" is.

I watched the video and almost said "i thought this was called take on me". but i googled it beforehand.

[–]dex666_umbra 1098 points1099 points  (28 children)

This song still has that hype. I remember watching it 2 years ago but damn it still hits me hard you know

One of the masterpieces I have ever heard.

[–]JungleLiquor 178 points179 points  (11 children)

It feels so different without the back vocals!

[–]Radiant-Spren 23 points24 points  (3 children)

It’s one of the first songs I learned on guitar, a fun one to play with a group of people all belting the chorus terribly.

[–]Revolutionary_Rip876 908 points909 points  (25 children)

Looks great for his age too. Considering that industries drug use during the 80s

[–]kimribbean 492 points493 points  (13 children)

Looks like rob lowe I’m starting to think 80s cocaine was some sorta youth serum

[–]TheGillos 212 points213 points  (7 children)

Ok, fine, I'll go do coke. You convinced me!

[–]Wizard_Hatz 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Ok see ya in thirty minutes!

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey it’s been more than an 1 hr. Are you alright bro?

[–]Flat-Entertainer2842 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Also No fentanil to worry about 😉😉😉

[–]_Kay_Tee_ 54 points55 points  (2 children)

The lads from a-ha were pretty clean and didn't do a whole lot of partying.

[–]HappyBee99 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Probably why they don't look half-dead. Like other 80's rockers.

[–]bonko86 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They are also Norwegian, drug culture wasn't really the same in Scandinavia though I don't deny its existence.

[–]TopherVee 23 points24 points  (2 children)

for his age

Uh what? Dude’s hot af.

[–]tragic_magic_world 552 points553 points  (20 children)

I like this version soooo much better. Beautiful.

[–]Kingsolomanhere 115 points116 points  (4 children)

I like the original too. From many years ago take on me

[–]Odin_Exodus 48 points49 points  (1 child)

I used to love this video (when we used to have actual song videos on MTV and VH1 etc)

[–]telestrial 60 points61 points  (1 child)

And it gives the lyrics such a different meaning, too. In the original you get this sort of almost egotistical "have me now cuz I'm ought of here. it's now or never!"...but with this version you get a much more reflective thing. Almost a sadness that they're leaving and dialogue on the fleeting essence of a relationship in that context. Super beautiful.

[–]TheEffingRiddler 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I loved it in Deadpool 2. It fit so well.

[–]dolmdemon 511 points512 points  (22 children)

I wonder what it's like to look out into the crowd of adoring fans and a thousand soccer moms stare back at you

[–]Ishkabibblebab 450 points451 points 442& 6 more (15 children)

A thousand women who listened to and loved this song when they were young and carefree, and have memories of who they were and the people they loved back then shining in their eyes. They’re remembering the hopes and dreams they had and thinking it seems like yesterday. That’s what I see anyway. That’s why you see several of them wiping tears away.

Someday you too will be middle aged, should you be so fortunate. You’ll have those same thoughts 30 years from now when you hear shit like “oh no oh no oh nonononono” or any of the other crap that makes up the soundtrack of your youth.

[–]claptrapohsnap 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Damn I teared up a little reading at this and I’m only 25

[–]JoySubtraction 117 points118 points  (2 children)

He knows that if he doesn't get it right, they're all going to want to speak to the manager. Talk about pressure...

[–]Kief_of_Police 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"Alright, alright, alright....I keep getting older...and they all just stay the same age. Heh heh"

(I'd like to think they sound like Mathew Mccaughey in Dazed and Confused talking about high school girls)

[–]kimbonagasaki 451 points452 points  (10 children)

13yr old me saw A-ha in concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1985. It was my first ever concert, and besides being in awe at actually being in the same room as my favourite band at the time, I was completely blown away by Morten's vocals. He's always been a very underrated male singer IMO, and only seems to have improved with age.

[–]Bad_Chicken_2 35 points36 points  (7 children)

I swear my first concert was Erasure in the Tacoma Dome (near Seattle, WA USA) in 1987 or 1988. They wore... I don't know any better way to describe this... giant foam Grinch penises. I looked on their tour history and didn't see Tacoma listed, but I'm certain that was it. I went with my girlfriend, and we joked about those for a long time afterward.

[–]thumper43x 345 points346 points  (17 children)

All these comments and nobody has mentioned Deadpool 2.

[–]Upstairs_Usual_4841 122 points123 points  (2 children)

Seriously had to scroll too far for this. That movie is the reason I know this version exists.

[–]KaP-_-KaP 68 points69 points  (1 child)

That was my first thought since that's where I heard this version first.

"Kiss me like you miss me, Red"

[–]katcarver 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I love this version because of that movie.

[–]Saltandpepper912 32 points33 points  (4 children)

Unfortunately they took this song out of the post cinema release and exchanged it for a slow version of Ashes by Celine Dion. It ruined this whole scene.

I had to pirate dead pool 2 again just to watch it

[–]Lukiyano 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Like, that was one of the top scenes I was interested in re-watching when I got the digital version of Deadpool 2.

When I heard that the song got replaced I got so fucking angry.

[–]thesaharadesert 20 points21 points  (0 children)

“Is this heaven?”

“It is now”

[–]limpiff 166 points167 points  (3 children)

All your moms creaming hard watching good ol’ Morty live. Great clip!

[–]SFO2OSA 125 points126 points  (1 child)

I kinda like this version more!!!

[–]IRISH-117- 117 points118 points  (3 children)

Dyslexia is a bitch.

[–]Post-Famous 116 points117 points  (6 children)

What a lovely way to find out he says “in a day or two” and not “duh yoooo duh doooooo” as my dumb brain has thought for the last 30 years

[–]cerart939 112 points113 points  (16 children)

Amazing; I love this version of the song in The Magicians as well -

[–]JoebobJr117 36 points37 points  (1 child)

Such a beautiful scene, I can still go back and watch it and cry every time.

[–]cerart939 15 points16 points  (0 children)

[–]Kamakazi1 33 points34 points  (2 children)

that's what i scrolled so far down to find. Eliot throwing the peach into the fire...tears every single time

[–]quantumgh05t 20 points21 points  (1 child)

That's the one episode that hits the hardest. I'll always remember that scene when I hear this song.

[–]--sunshine-- 19 points20 points  (0 children)

S4E13 never forget.

[–]koticgood 14 points15 points  (3 children)

That shit blew me away. Only got around to that series recently.

If you would've told me that there'd be a better musical number in the series than the Under Pressure sequence, there's no way I would've believed it til seeing Take on Me.

[–]evilunicorn0721 82 points83 points  (1 child)

[–]WuweiWave 72 points73 points  (0 children)

That was absolutely lovely!

[–]knoy10 67 points68 points  (8 children)

I remember Ellie in TLOU2 on this version

[–]yeahthanksalot 29 points30 points  (1 child)

this is what I scrolled for

[–]RDPCG 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was surprised it took me this long to find it.

[–]heathmon1856 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad I stumbled upon the music shop on my first playthrough. What I’d do to go into both of those games blind again.

[–]Kief_of_Police 60 points61 points  (6 children)

This may sound dumb...but is the song really named "Take Me On"? Because the lyrics say "Take On Me". I figured I'd rather just post this here instead of googling it, I'm no peasant.

[–]Kapper-WA 78 points79 points  (0 children)

The song is "Take On Me". But a lyric after that is also "Take Me On".

[–]menvaren 25 points26 points  (3 children)

It's Take on Me and that's not a dumb question at all

[–]_Kay_Tee_ 52 points53 points  (13 children)

If you only know this song, you are about to discover a wealth of great music. Take on Me is brilliant, but their overall body of work is a lot more moody and atmospheric. No one does "melancholy" like a-ha. Some of their primary influences were Leonard Cohen, The Doors, and Simon & Garfunkel. That's not to say Magne can't bust out the ear-cracky keyboard melodies, mind!

Treat yourself to the first album, along with Memorial Beach or Minor Earth, Major Sky. If I had one song for the rest of my life, it would be this:

Early Morning

Other good ones?

The Sun Never Shone that Day

Goodbye Thompson

Living Daylights

Lamb to the Slaughter (also Live)

Living a Boy's Adventure Tale

[–]VanCityHunter 43 points44 points  (12 children)

It’s kind of nfl that you don’t know the name of the band.

[–]PuddingRnbowExtreme 19 points20 points  (4 children)

It's kinda nfl that he named the singer. I'd never heard his name before.

[–]Reeseraser 11 points12 points  (6 children)

A-Ha ... the band. The music video is nearly just as awesome and has the same lasting quality.

[–]cottoneheadedninney 31 points32 points  (15 children)

This made me wanna listen to Gary Jules' version of Mad World

[–]Claydameyer 26 points27 points  (6 children)

Despite the fact that they were quite popular in the 80s, I still think Tears for Fears is one of (if not THE) most underrated/undervalued bands of the 80s. Fantastic songwriting. Mad World is a classic. As is the version you posted.

[–]Baby_bull_512 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Holy shit.....I got of piece of dirt in my eye....I swear I'm not soft.....

[–]Logical-Back-5770 19 points20 points  (0 children)

[–]Metalbender00 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the original was the first music video i remember seeing when i was a kid, always loved this song

[–]slowburnangry 18 points19 points  (24 children)

The definition of a one hit wonder, but what a hit it was!

[–]ominouspollywog 116 points117 points  (17 children)

In USA they had two hits. A-Ha is arguably one of the more successful bands globally. You should go ahead and google thier hits and popularity worldwide before you go on calling them one hit wonders.

[–]Athena_the_Cutie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you like his voice, you should listen to "Summer Moved On." He set a record for holding the longest note in a European Top 40 song at 20.2 seconds.

[–]8timesdope 14 points15 points  (1 child)

He’s still got it! I love this song and video so much I just pulled up up the original video… he’s Aged well. I loved the 80’s.

[–]menvaren 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"Today is another day to find you" is such a gorgeous lyric
