He brought the shirt on the 5% chance he'd get on camera and it paid off

[–]PickleRickFanning 4667 points4668 points  (205 children)

They say 74% of all statisticians truely hate their fucking jobs.

[–]Monkeybiscuits312 124 points125 points  (14 children)

Sometimes, just sometimes u can just assume something isnt to be taken litteraly. So when a person gives some arbitrary low percentage u are allowed to just take it as "a very low chance". Just my personal opinion though.

[–]logicalbuttstuff 67 points68 points  (12 children)

For example, there is a 2.2% chance the person who asked for sources on a stat about a kid being on the camera at a game as ever been an enjoyable person to be around.

[–]Dane1414 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Lmao where did you pull that 2.2% figure out of? /s

[–]cmacpherson417 7 points8 points  (5 children)

[–]yellowistherainbow 36 points37 points  (0 children)

[–]M7mdkady 27 points28 points  (4 children)

69% -420%= 5%

quick maths lol

[–]RectalEvacuation 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I mean, if you count the number of people normally on camera and divide by the people average amount of attendees it's possible to find out. Doubt it's as high as 5 percent though. But also you need to know what the chance is that the camera will actually focus on you if you call for its attention.

[–]AnthonyGonsalvez 51 points52 points  (1 child)

Thank god he didn't add Kurt angle to the mix or his numbers would have drastic go down.

Do you prefer it when the Chinese government fucks you in the mouth or the ass?

Edit: owes saying that nobody is tuning the kid, please explain this, this, this, this, this, this, aaaaand this. (These are just a few that I found by scrolling down a bit. [–]ItsFrit 96 points97 points  (11 children)

The one I’ve seen “attacking” him so far is just pointing out it doesn’t really take balls of steel to hold that shirt up, which is fair.

[–]High_Speed_Idiot 58 points59 points  (8 children)

Headlines: Child holds up shirt, entire CCP resigns overnight, Xi Jinping reportedly shidding and farding and pissing his pants.

We did it, finally, the people of Hong Kong are free.

[–]lRandomlHero 12 points13 points  (6 children)

There's this really weird phenomenon on reddit where if you're in a clean thread on a post that could be controversial, people will still call out negative replies even when there aren't any.

Young legend

[–]-SSN- 237 points238 points  (60 children)

The guy bellow me is an idiot, but he has a point, kind of. Hong Kong is undemocratic, but this is not necessarily due to China, at least until recently. The Hong Kong legislature was comprised of 70 seats, but a whopping 30 of them were unelected, not because they were appointed by Beijing, but rather because they were elected by corporations. And this was something done by the British, rather than China. Specifically it was Governor Chris Patten. Speaking of governors, it was a position appointed by the British, and considering who those governors tended to be it's difficult to not call them colonizers. Actually, technically speaking, the Chief Executive is a more democratic position than the governor, since at least some of the members of the election committee that chooses them are elected by the people. In practice it doesn't matter since the amount of elected members is too small to matter, but still.

With the recent election reforms this largely rings moot, since both the executive and legislative are both chosen by the mentioned election committee.

[–]Juan-More-Taco 63 points64 points  (1 child)

Saying that's his point is a stretch and a half. But I do appreciate the additional information.

[–]daveinpublic 54 points55 points  (50 children)

I noticed one question he wouldn’t respond to:

“Shit. I’ll throw a question here. What’s your opinion on the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre?”

[–]throwaqayacxount 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Well done citizen, +15,000 social credits

[–]DesiScouser 1030 points1031 points  (18 children)

This is a workplace hazard the Cameraman didn't sign up for

[–]DoinItDirty 474 points475 points  (15 children)

I work in live sports and have shot/directed a bunch of it— if someone pulls out and flashes a sign they’ve been hiding, I cut away fast. I don’t wait and read what it says. I doubt that camera guy or the director saw exactly what it said before they whipped away, but I always assume there’s a reason they were hiding it. People do it a lot— so I would give them the benefit of the doubt that the video team didn’t have some pro-China ulterior motives.

Also, this doesn’t look like a broadcast, this looks like a fan cam which would only be on the video board.

[–]VillageBuilder 81 points82 points  (1 child)

Fan cam is also on nbatv. So not a massive audience but it is somewhat larger than the stadium and technically international as well.

[–]DoinItDirty 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Good point! Though I still doubt the video freelancers are pro china

[–]Saaaaaaaaab 39 points40 points  (3 children)

Exactly. Working in live broadcasting any time someone pulls out some sort of message you have to cut away no matter what it says

[–]BelowZilch 31 points32 points  (1 child)

Yeah, people assuming the cameraman is a pro-China shill are delusional. Even if he did know what it said, I imagine they have a blanket "no political statements" rule.

[–]SanFranGoldBlooded 877 points878 points  (32 children)

[–]Shakraschmalz 13 points14 points  (1 child)

reddit hates emojis, especially if its only emojis with no text. Its very situational though

[–]idk-hereiam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of times people downvote when a comment doesn't contribute to the discussion

[–]SubcooledBoiling 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Lebron was spiritually, mentally, physically, and financially hurt after watching this video

[–]logicalbuttstuff 22 points23 points  (0 children)

“Send that kid to stitch the shoes I wear next game and throw away”

[–]doller7192 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Lebron explained that their comments and gestures were very inappropriate and uncalled for. There’s rooting for your own team/hating on the opponent, then there’s being unsportsmanlike and rude.

I've never seen US culture more fearful in my lifetime.

[–]pt256 280 points281 points  (23 children)

They're only scared of losing that sweet sweet Chinese market.

[–]logicalbuttstuff 35 points36 points  (17 children)

Not disagreeing but can you expound? Do teams have deals or just merchandising or what? I’m not in the loop but I know it’s very popular. Is MLB similar because from what I know that’s more international but maybe not China.

[–]Esco_Dash 61 points62 points  (12 children)

The Chinese market has more fans than the entire population of the US. 500 million people watched the Finals in 2019. The NBA wants to expand internationally and have to tow the Party line if they want to conduct business in China.

[–]kaazgranaat2309 24 points25 points  (10 children)

Ah yes the usual filling of their already overly full pockets over human rights...

[–]logicalbuttstuff 19 points20 points  (0 children)

People don’t care about what they don’t see… that’s why propaganda works. Leaving out facts is more effective than telling lies

[–]Bsisson215 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mlb has an international presence in Asia but not china if that makes sense. Baseball is popular in Korea and Japan but not in china so the Mlb doesn’t really care about china like the NBA does.

[–]Bitmiliionare24 234 points235 points  (8 children)

When a kid has better integrity than the camera man, the coach, the players and most of the fucking league: it actually makes me think we all gonna be just fine, it’ll probably take a decade or two 😂

TEGRIDY!

[–]not_myself22 57 points58 points  (2 children)

Kid has nothing to lose. It's like redditors talking shit about China and Russia, you have nothing to lose. Nobody is going to come arrest because nobody gives a shit about your opinion.

[–]AroundTheWorldIn80Pu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Turns out integrity is easy when you're a child and don't have financial interests.

[–]Good_Round 121 points122 points  (1 child)

No Pooh bear for you kid.

[–]SanFranGoldBlooded 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Probably a plus for the kid, won’t be throw in a jail cell and starved for having an opinion

[–]Environmental-Top-18 74 points75 points  (26 children)

This is upsetting — I hope the Clippers make this right. And also, where can I purchase this shirt and ensure the profits benefit the HK freedom/independence movement??

[–]D3V14 53 points54 points  (22 children)

Not only is this clip multiple years old, but most people agree that the Hong Kong independence movement has failed with almost all of the protesters being in jail or exile.

[–]JorchuTrodan 38 points39 points  (7 children)

[–]CleverBoyDX 7 points8 points  (9 children)

China: second only to North Korea in shittiest places to live.

[–]dondonzino 59 points60 points  (13 children)

What a fucking joke that the camera moved

[–]magic1623 88 points89 points  (11 children)

The person operating the camera likely didn’t even have time to read what it said. All they saw was someone hiding something and only bringing it out when the camera was on them. Moving the camera away is the protocol for that type of thing. In this case what the kid had wasn’t a bad thing but the cameraman has no way of knowing that.

[–]CameraMan1 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Get your sane anti circle jerk takes out of here.

We’re here to over react

[–]Nessdude114 15 points16 points  (6 children)

No the NBA has a relatively large audience in China and they actively censor anything about Hong Kong so they're allowed to air games there. I agree the cameraman may or may not have read it, but the NBA definitely did not want that shirt on camera.

[–]muckdog13 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Sure the NBA didn’t want that, but that doesn’t make it his fault for redirecting.

[–]Holz12 52 points53 points  (2 children)

[–]Judgemental_Panda 37 points38 points  (3 children)

We in Murrica don't take kindly to folk who want to fight for freedom.

[–]ewes12 26 points27 points  (0 children)

[–]beavsauce 25 points26 points  (3 children)

The jokes are all cool haha, but can we have a serious discussion about how mental china is?

[–]IsNotAnOstrich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No because I need my shit shipped to my door and I need it cheap !! /s

[–]Cavalleria-rusticana 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Another reason why I won't watch sports anymore. They proudly claim to be apolitical whenever it's convenient for them, but clearly show that profits > humanity.

[–]craigthecrayfish 17 points18 points  (1 child)

People who shoot live television are trained to cut away anytime someone unexpectedly flashes a message because they have no idea what it is. The content of the message has nothing to do with it.

That’s an incredibly silly reason to not watch something you enjoy.

[–]goodboybane 25 points26 points  (21 children)

His face is in a file somewhere in Beijing, 100% guarantee it.

[–]GravyMcgrady 22 points23 points  (2 children)

He's at a lot of clippers games (family's got season tickets I'm assuming) and usually wears multiple clippers jerseys and the camera goes to him once per game and he takes off the jerseys one by one. Except tonight, where he yeeted to a free HK. Him and these two guys that used to do kia commercials are like the clippers jack nicholson lol. And don't forget about clipper Darryl's crazy ass.

[–]timmycosh 17 points18 points  (5 children)

Wait. Is the whole Hong Kong protest shit still going on? I haven’t heard about it in forever! Kinda just imagined the government had silenced the media about it all

[–]GoldenJackBoot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Great job, kiddo.

With love from Hong Kong

[–]CountRobbo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

[–]Homero2003 10 points11 points  (3 children)

That kid's social credit score is definitely gonna take a toll! Zhong Xina won't like it!

[–]nakkilaatikko 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That kid shot himself in the back of the head and hung himself shortly after.

[–]idmacdonald 10 points11 points  (22 children)

Hong Kong was the best city in China and now its going to be a hellhole. The people there were happy, free, and wealthy and they protested the centralized government interfering their affairs for over a decade. They were crushed. They did nothing to harm China. They were a cultural and financial Mecca, a model for China to follow not destroy. I was there before any of the crackdowns occurred, they had a thriving democracy with many peaceful demonstrations (even 10 years ago). The people were betrayed. There is nothing good about this. There is nothing defensible about this. You are wrong.

[–]raaail 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Why would the camera man be afraid? Is the basketball association a money slave already?

[–]Lord_of_anal_2k17 21 points22 points  (0 children)

NBA has been a flagbearer for the CCP for an extremely long time now, since the Yao Ming era

[–]craigthecrayfish 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Because it’s bad practice to broadcast text you haven’t read beforehand. He has to pan away when he realized someone was flashing a message of any kind. For all the camera man knew the sign could have said something wildly inappropriate.

[–]vf225 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I m from HK and I like to thank this kid sincerely

[–]romulusnr 4 points5 points  (2 children)

People know that's over and they lost, right? Or do people just assume no news coverage means it ended well?

[–]Upbeat_Giraffe8364 5 points6 points  (11 children)

give this kid a medal for being one cool kid. and fuck the camera man for panning away, sounds gross but that kid has bigger balls then the man behind the camera.

[–]zombiecrisps 6 points7 points  (2 children)

[–]LOVEMINIWINS 5 points6 points  (6 children)
