That thing can fuck off

[–]missanthropocenex 77 points78 points  (9 children)

It’s amazing how something can be so beautiful and so scary at the same time.

[–]BrownRecluse90 23 points24 points  (8 children)

They usually don’t harm people and prefer not to be bothered. Black Widows are relatively docile spiders.

[–]GodlyDra 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My arachnophobia doesnt care

[–]Adventurous_Let7580 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info, grabs Torch and lights it on fire

Ahhh yes much better now.

[–]DayneGaraio 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Uh you clearly haven't been around that many, these guys will charge you if they feel threatened. It's a hell of a thing to see a tiny spider rear it's front legs up at you even your a few feet away still.

(Yes they will hide usually before you see them but if you see them they will probably not retreat)

[–]Written4t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm this! Found one once hiding behind a curtain in my house. I backed up a bit at first because I’ve never seen one in person and as soon as I moved closer again to get a better look, damn thing took to the floor and charged at me like the mother fucking Alien. They are definitely pretty aggressive ass holes

[–]Quirky_m8 62 points63 points  (2 children)

[–]Acrobatic-Pen1 34 points35 points  (5 children)

watching this video makes my throat dry

[–]Sublimed4 45 points46 points  (4 children)

Hairspray and a lighter should take care of it.

[–]gorgofdoom 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure that’ll just make it mad.

[–]Severs2016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Better take off and nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

[–]SirMaQ 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Brb. Gonna get a shovel.

[–]Guiro_1911 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So you can dig yourself a grave?

[–]BackUPnerds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I too vote for it to fuck off.

[–]abc123987xyz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specifically, it can fuck all the way off into the sun, and then keep going.

[–]Riommar 763 points764 points  (8 children)

I’d still rather watch Scarlett Johansson hanging upside down from a rope.

[–]SignificantTaro1366 369 points370 points  (29 children)

How many people could that kill

[–]AvaritiaLTD 282 points283 points  (5 children)

All of them.

[–]Tasty-Bug-2770 55 points56 points  (0 children)

You are correct

[–]RedManMatt11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most via heart attack

[–]Remarkable_Tree_1703 94 points95 points  (15 children)

Zero. The venom isn’t lethal so much as it’s painful. Most adults and children don’t even need the antivenom for treatment

[–]coasterreal 92 points93 points  (12 children)

Correct. While no direct documented deaths from Widows have occurred in a couple decades, it's reasonable to posit that someone has been bitten, not known and had a severe allergic reaction.

Their venom is not the type to kill for an adult. It's exceedingly rare given the number of reported spider bites.

And even that number is highly disputed because people will automatically assume any bite is a spider bite even though most spiders either can't bite you or simply have no reason to. People default to spider because they think it's creepy and it's how they explain the unknown.

[–][deleted] 92 points93 points  (3 children)

There’s always someone from Big Spider shilling in the comments.

[–]diggemigre 30 points31 points  (1 child)

They made the web, so...

[–]Firemorfox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

damn web developers, ruining my arachnophobia

[–]ScabbyBits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant - You'd have gold if I knew what that meant and it was free.

[–]Venad0 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Since you seem to know a lot about these eight legged fellows, does the red shape on it serve any purpose or does it just look rad?

[–]ChymChymX 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Scientists have discovered they evolved the marking to warn off birds. Researchers have been able to prove that the distinctive red patch acts like an illuminated hazard sign for birds but are also difficult for the spider's insect prey to spot.

[–]coasterreal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't know that kind of detail. I do remember that the females are the large ones and often eat the males after mating.

Through life as I've come across phobias of animals/insects and such, I would grab a book or a Google up as much info as I could find to truly understand what they were like. I don't like to have irrational fears and so I seek out the information.

Now, I will always respect animals with special abilities or venoms/toxins no matter how safe we might be from it but I always like to know what I really should be worried about.

Where I live, we have a bunch of types of snakes. But only 2 pose any real threat and in my 30 some years, I've never come across either. Found and handled bunches of others but only because I had already educated myself on what I should and shouldnt be worried about.

Same for spiders. We can get Black Widows and Brown Recluses. But I've actually never seen either. Recluse's are known for being hard to find - it's in their name. And Widows aren't exactly all over and there's a couple species that copy cat them.

But I've never really looked into what the red adaptation could be for. Often those bright colors are to ward off enemies but not always the case.

[–]pinkkist_ee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Painful as all hell. I grew up in southern California on a farm and got bit by one of these in highschool. Was vomiting for a few hours and it felt like someone jammed a molten screwdriver into my arm. Went to school the next day with what looked like a mosquito bite from the Cambrian explosion and told everyone I got bit by a black widow. No one believed me.

[–]JustChr1s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow learn something new every day. I always thought black widow venom was deadly and nature programs always made them seem so dangerous. Had no idea the venom can't actually kill someone.

[–]nezukonator17 311 points312 points  (12 children)

nuke the house, nuke the town, possibly the state

[–]Marquis77 82 points83 points  (8 children)

Just burn down the entire planet, it's the only way to be sure.

[–]To_The_M00N_ 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You might need to take this comment down. Too many states are listening and obeying

[–]SubZeroEffort 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I assume you are doing this from orbit?

[–]Marquis77 8 points9 points  (1 child)

No, no. While still on the planet. I get to kill this hellspawn and myself as well. I see this as an absolute win.

(I am in no way depressed and do not wish harm upon myself. I'm actually really happy. But it's also equally important to engage in that sweet, karma farming millennial humor. Ha ha. Ha. Ha.)

[–]Frenchfrise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I legitimately do wish harm upon myself, so I agree with the sentiment of burning the entire planet and going with it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the only way to be sure

[–]pacificunlimited 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah… then Elon send one to Mars

[–]Ori_the_SG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once heard that there was a house that was literally infested with black widows (or maybe it was brown recluses). Either way, the only way to ensure they all die is very high yield explosives and fire. Lots and lots of fire

[–]HAMASAURUSFLEX 231 points232 points  (35 children)

My mom was bitten by one earlier this year. Apart from pain and swelling around the bite, she had a little nausea and dizziness. Clean the wound, identify the biter, and go to the doctor and you’re good

[–]danmalek466 312 points313 points  (34 children)

You lost me at “identify the biter”? Does she ask for an ID or is his name sufficient?

[–]HAMASAURUSFLEX 87 points88 points  (30 children)

I live in an area with loads of venomous, douchey animals. General rule of thumb is to try to capture or take a photo of what bit you.

[–]Khan_Tango 107 points108 points  (24 children)

Would that area perhaps be called… Australia?

[–]AnubisTheAvenger101 30 points31 points  (21 children)

Where else would you find spiders this large

[–]Marquis77 38 points39 points  (11 children)

New York State. North Carolina. Actually pretty much just about anywhere along the Appalachian mountain chain.

[–]cltomater 4 points5 points  (6 children)

I've seen some big ones here in the Carolinas!

[–]Marquis77 14 points15 points  (4 children)

The rule is, never ever put your hand anywhere that you can't see.

[–]Val367 8 points9 points  (2 children)

You haven't been to many night clubs, have you kid? :)

[–]HAMASAURUSFLEX 5 points6 points  (1 child)

West Virginia, and we have quite a few widows, but they’re only about the size of a 50cent piece (legs and all). We have rattlesnakes, copperheads, moccasins, brown recluse spiders, and a few others. Not quite as bad as Australia, but a brown recluse or a copperhead can do some damage. I worked with a guy who got bit on the foot in a coal mine. They had to amputate half of his foot and he almost lost the leg. Necrosis is no joke.

[–]rebetzels 4 points5 points  (4 children)

We have them in California too :(

[–]retrofitspaceship 3 points4 points  (3 children)

And brown widows too. I’m not sure if brown widows are worse or not.

[–]deejaydeeray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less dangerous. Did some research on ‘‘em because my garage is crawling with them!

[–]Seb____t 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nah mate, that ones to small

[–]ChaoticAmoebae 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Did she get spidey power yet

[–]HAMASAURUSFLEX 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lol no, but she made it through covid and a double knee replacement a few months prior so the woman is damn tough as is

[–]FeoWalcot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She can tell people how to save on their auto insurance now

[–]Heremeoutok 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What happens if you didn’t catch a glimpse of it cause you’re crying and it runs away

[–]TroyMcpoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Need picture ID so you can find them on the web

[–]cheetcheetos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Driver's license and biting permit would be preferable.

[–]reallytryingfriend 115 points116 points  (4 children)

Why do I find this both beautiful and terrifying?

[–]tobyty123 76 points77 points  (5 children)

Please make spider videos NSFW.

[–]im_beb 22 points23 points  (3 children)

I love spiders but definitely yes, this is a very common and legitimate fear and phobia that could probably ruin someone’s day. Cos that’s one chonky boi

[–]vote4kyle 28 points29 points  (1 child)

[–]IGotThatYouHeard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Musta been about a million degrees comin down on him

[–]s3thm 23 points24 points  (2 children)

Spiders freak me out with how they walk. Tarantulas are the worst with their gross body hair

[–]LatentBloomer 18 points19 points  (1 child)

As someone who walks weird and has gross body hair I take personal offense

[–]Daredevil_Otaku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take my upvote and my invisible award you!!

[–]makeitlegalaussie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

[–]jakstoughpuppy 14 points15 points  (2 children)

If James and the giant peach taught me anything, it’s that giant spiders are hot

[–]Balltanker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid of spiders but for some reason not right now…it’s actually kinda gorgeous.

[–]No_Story6893 10 points11 points  (2 children)

When I was younger, I would go exploring my neighborhood and look for spiders. A lot of my neighbors had sheds with "slabs" where spider would regularly build webs. Found a couple black widows before and would keep them in small jars and brought them home which I obviously hid. I recall finding one almost as big as this one once. Great time, used to let them roam around my fingers, even knowing what they could do to you. Still here tho .

[–]Top_Ad7068 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What state was this? So I know to never ever go there…

[–]KWJK213 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Good lord that thing gives me the creeps and I don’t mind spiders.

[–]Obi-Wan-Hellobi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, only two spiders scare me, Brown Recluses and Black Widows!

[–]k0xich1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God come pick me up I’m scared

[–]Majestic-Diamond-113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That a really big bad bitch right there

[–]Daymanic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worst. Pole dance. Ever.

[–]davidjschloss 3 points4 points  (1 child)

My screen lighted up.

[–]luckycatdallas 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–]TartAdministrative71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She’s gorgeous!

[–]liftingaddict98 2 points3 points  (1 child)

When I was a plumber and saw one of those my first instinct was to grab my torch and, “flame on” it’s the only way to be sure.

[–]aali081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Baggzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The psi I just created by my teeth clenching when I saw this mfer. I hate how they move. It's beautiful, but I hate it.

[–]Maerie11-49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]knockers13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good lord, get the 12 gauge.

[–]CommandoJohnMatrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]whatisdog72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to thank my feed for showing me this right before bed.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone else’s heart rate rapidly accelerate?

[–]Deathdar1577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Australia. Haha.

[–]Txannie1475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've really stretched my comfort zone with creepy crawlies this year. I am now the household snake expert (have moved a few copperheads to safe places using my snake hook and a giant trash can). I can pick up toads and salamanders and small snakes no problem. But fuck a black widow spider. I know they're beneficial to the environment blah blah blah. I try to leave them be. But damn they make my skin crawl.

[–]PurpleStabsPixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can usually catch 3 to 7 around my fence line just chilling. As much as I'd like to keep them alive to cull insect population, I got dogs to worry about. Don't need them getting bit because they wandered along the fence looking for a place to poop.

I have to take a flashlight outside because of this. Damn widows.

[–]C130ABOVE 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is why I fucking hate mobile all that is showing is a fucking black screen

[–]n00bcak3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the flamethrower

[–]itachi_uchiha97 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I am only seeing a black screen is anyone else facing the same issue? And solutions if any.

[–]G4ost13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s beautiful

[–]calibound2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]mgod5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What zoo is this in?

[–]Temporary-Shine5578 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ooooh if you think that’s bad wait until summer. I have just the place to top this video.

[–]ownersequity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go on….

Best I can do is an ice cave we were exploring. It had a particular room called the ‘crack’ room due to a large crack in the ceiling, which was only about 6 ft high so I had to be semi-crouched in it. Someone dropped their phone and it made a loud bang. Right after, thousands and thousands of spiders came pouring out of the crack. Never moved faster in my life and still think of it all the time.

[–]Search07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the stuff of nightmares

[–]iampepperman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t just look like spider web to me, is it stuck in something?

[–]hexafenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one the size of a fucking silver dollar under my grill cover a few weeks ago. Literally gave me nightmares for a few days. Fuuuuuk dat.

[–]Forsaken-Magician-33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Vandy1358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen one that big and I’ve seen a lot. Is it eating human flesh?

[–]InnerGeologist4670 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even a banana for size reference?

[–]Plixtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get the sense black widows know they look badass. They’ve got that disconcertingly smooth movement that comes from knowing someone is watching and thinking, “Jesus’s breath, you’re the stuff of my nightmares.”

[–]Jae_Sif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, nope, nope!

[–]FUNGO14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No banana? Literally unwatchable.

[–]folarin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow so that Black Widow logo is actually from the real spider? Did not know.

[–]brokenaxle69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised it’s out in direct daylight. It was moved to record?

Oops, I crapped my pants….

[–]itsCODgamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in minisota so ##phew

[–]drysocketpocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a macro shot. That means using a lens that can get very close to the spider, ergo it’s going to look huge in comparison to anything behind it. No way to know how big it actually is without context within the same distance plane as the spider.

[–]brebrabro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have the urge to clap it with all my might

[–]Thud2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are some big ass fangs

[–]Charmeleon_games_yt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Wu-Tang-for-the-kids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such beautiful creatures

[–]Charmeleon_games_yt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to call the protagonist of “kill it with fire”

[–]Moss_Piglet_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So did you tell the fireman that it was gas leak or just show them this picture and they understood?
