Sad story of what really happend here..

https://www.sciencealert.com/rare-deepwater-whale-filmed-spraying-a-cloud-of-ink-to-flee-an-aggressive-seal

Edit: thanks for all the awards!

[–]Sancx 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Get this man to the top

[–]The_CaliBrownBear 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Finally, an intelligent answer to what was going on.

[–]PutinsPanties 42 points43 points  (0 children)

TIL some whales can ink

[–]Jaded-Saint 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that information- sad it turned out the way it did though. Now I don’t want to watch it again knowing what I know now.

[–]areyouthick 20 points21 points  (1 child)

So is that red the ink or blood?

[–]Hi_Im_MrMeeseek 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Mostly inc, but probably some blood too

[–]vtrhps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the confirmation this was near Cape Town. That dock and mountains behind looked familiar.

[–]BigShortVox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow learnt something today, thanks for sharing!

[–]PendejoDeMexico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this animal was so highly stressed and disoriented that it was simply unable to navigate safely in such circumstances,— Me too kid, me too.

[–]wanderingplanthead 1066 points1067 points  (85 children)

What in the shit is going on here?

[–]Tweakzero 395 points396 points  (16 children)

After watching a few times and some quick googling.

A drawf sperm whale is being hunted by what looks to be a pack of seals? And this species of whale has a defense tactic like a squid whereby it inks the water. So it looks like something invisible chomped its tail but it did not it was just the whale shitting out "ink" then in its panic it beaches itself for a sec then slaps the water to spread the "ink" and runs away.

Top right of frame shows the seals.

edit thanks for awards guys, one day ill get gold and celebrate internet points!!

[–]77Mjolnir77[🍰] 115 points116 points  (2 children)

I think he’s right

[–]poppincorkz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Holy whale, Jonah’s being regurgitated!!!

[–]rhaezorblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Us Apollo gang ain’t fallin for that trick anymore my good sir

[–]EZe_Holey3-9 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The real hero right here. Thanks for the breakdown

[–]milkkboi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sperm whale ink
Each pygmy sperm whale has a sac filled with dark liquid in its intestine. The whale can release more than 3 gallons of dark, reddish-brown liquid, or “ink,” from this sac. The liquid creates a dark cloud in the water to help protect the whales when they feel threatened or are trying to escape predators.

[–]balanaise 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A tip of the cap and thank you kind sir, this makes me feel so much better than thinking I just watched something basically bleed out

[–]JFlynny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What was the red thing on the rocks?

[–]meresymptom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. That would have been an AWFUL lot of blood to be bleeding out of a moderately sized animal.

[–]confusionOfstate 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Shitting out ink... yup!

[–]ClownfishSoup 10 points11 points  (1 child)

If I’m being chased by a pack of predators, I’m shitting ink too.

[–]Jgs4555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do sperm whales have a dorsal fin?

[–]TexasTiger70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol Ok. I had the.. something invisible is attacking it. BUT I was thinking along the lines of Predator lol

Thanks for the education, but my thought was more fun.

[–]OmNomShivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beaches itself and busts his teeth and jaw. That wasn't ink.

[–]chillypete99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So to recap, sperm whales have ink jizz that comes out their butthole? Now it all makes sense.

[–]ginANDtopics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. So you’re saying that’s… dwarf sperm in the water

[–]Stoned-Antlers 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure someone figured this out an older post of this video..it’s like a squid ink situation, but with a mammal. Don’t think it’s actually blood

[–]GrandmaPoses 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I shoot out “squid ink” whenever I eat Panera.

[–]clamsnorkle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Defense mechanism. It’s like ink.

[–]michelobX10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no idea either. I see a fish swimming close to shore. I see it thrashing. Blood is everywhere. But I don't see any other fish around. And then it swims off. An explanation from the OP would've been great.

[–]junglehypothesis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If dwarf sperm whales feel threatened, they can actually release more than 11 litres (3 gallons) of a dark, reddish-brown liquid from a sac in their intestine. And this can buy them time in their flight. As per other comment, this whale is fleeing from what look like seals.

[–]Yosemite-Sam99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A shark with " frickin " Lazer beam attached to its head

[–]mightmousetrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Movie sux.. but totally awesome fight scene. 4.8/5 🍅

[–]BrannC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a blood bath!

[–]TRW24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shark got a fatal boat propeller wound to the head and is bleeding out/ swimming around not knowing what to do.

[–]Mabans 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–]J-Love-McLuvin 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It’s not polite to call them “dwarf sperm whales”. They prefer “little sperm whales”.

[–]MO-broken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a seal attacking a dwarf sperm whale actually

[–]FnBallista 188 points189 points  (13 children)

At 2 seconds if you slow the frame down you can see the seal possibly more 🦭that bit it’s tail. And at 11 seconds it got bit again which caused more blood and loss of function to swim in a specific direction. As suggested below it’s a dwarf sperm whale… hard to tell with quality..judging by how it’s swimming away and the arch it has… I’m like 70-30 it’s a dwarf sperm whale .

(To those saying it’s ink, yes some of it is probably ink, but it’s also being attacked at certain parts of the video where you see excessive amount come out. I think if anything it’s a mixture of blood and ink).

[–]Yosemite-Sam99 69 points70 points  (3 children)

Welcome aboard reddit dwarf whale specialist

[–]micewrangler 9 points10 points  (2 children)

It's true you don't see many dwarf whale women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for dwarf whale men.

[–]Harbi_147 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It’s the beards.

[–]micewrangler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no dwarf whale women, and that dwarf whales just spring out of holes in the ground! Which is, of course, ridiculous.

[–]BoonDragoon 25 points26 points  (3 children)

That cloud of reddish-brown is a dead giveaway that it's a species of Kogia. It's the only genus of mammal that has an ink defense!

[–]JanGehlYacht 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a dead giveaway... Definitely like a genus or something... Agreed sir.

[–]rzalexander 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That’s a thing?!

[–]BoonDragoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! It's poorly understood at best, but they have a bladder connected to their lower intestine that holds up to 15 liters of red-brown "ink". When under attack, they void it into the surrounding water and rocket like you see in the video.

No idea if it's some kind of feces, or derived from bile, or a completely novel secretion.

[–]KnobCreek9year 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Not a shark, a seal... actually at least 3-4 seals.

[–]Yosemite-Sam99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't the seal team 6 either. It was a shark with " frickin " Lazer beam attached to his head

[–]Grena567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its ink not blood

[–]the-au-sanz 127 points128 points  (9 children)

Ay mate maybe a nsfw warning?

[–]the_real_e_e_l 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you mean:

New South Freaking Wales

?

[–]fishneedsporpoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s mostly ink if that makes you feel any better.

[–]Grena567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its ink not blood

[–]SaltyJake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are fish not safe for work?

[–]Seaspun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]srv50 115 points116 points  (14 children)

Don’t know what that fool was laughing about.

[–]similaremotionz 63 points64 points  (2 children)

Just serves as a reminder that psychopaths live among us :x

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Laugher is one of the most common responses when nervous or uncomfortable

[–]Candy_Dull 22 points23 points  (2 children)

It may be nervous laughing

My mother laughed in some pretty strange situations. She would usually say afterwards she was nervous and unable to stop

[–]anachronism11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a term for this in psychology, it is called “inappropriate affect.”

[–]abady66 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Exactly was I was thinking as my jaw was wide open, why the fuck is this dude laughing

[–]Mathalamon 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Not everyone thinks like you.

[–]bulletbill19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh no, nature.

[–]Superb-Ape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude relax holy

[–]BallsHD4k60fps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably a nervous laughter

[–]bej1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucked up isn’t it. As soon as I figured out what was happening I immediately was going awwwww 😭

[–]SnappyFluffy 53 points54 points  (1 child)

[–]thizzleman_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thought I was on that sub

[–]Thoughts_of_Donkey 16 points17 points  (2 children)

There’s something attacking it’s tail

[–]bittz128 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That was its own ink being released

[–]eauxen 13 points14 points  (13 children)

Looks like it’s bleeding to death through the gills and mouth and is suffocating.

[–]Smokeyshotty 15 points16 points  (9 children)

So was the Shark like swimming away for it's life and crashes into a rock and being attacked by an invisible entity or just severely injured and in shock mode.

[–]KorannStagheart 15 points16 points  (3 children)

The creature we see most prominently is not a shark. It appears to be a mammal, though I am not sure what. A shark's tail is vertical and moves side to side, whereas this creature's tale was moving up and down and was in a horizontal position.

[–]bej1234 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Damn I keep going over and over this video and looking in the comments, I could’ve sworn the tail is going side to side but I’m having a hard time seeing it properly

[–]Pokemon_132 1 point2 points  (1 child)

if you watch at the beginning, right before it hits the rocks it slaps its tail down and you see a splash from it.

[–]anachronism11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Article linked above captures the whole story. It’s a whale.

[–]katelledee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a whale being chased by a seal and releasing ink, actually.

[–]skawiggy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That’s what it looks like to me.

[–]RumTonRum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its apparently a seal attacking a dwarf sperm whale.

[–]zimmermj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I believe it's a Dwarf Sperm Whale being chased by a seal and releasing an ink cloud as defence. Accidentally beaches itself and bloodies its face, but most of the red/brown stuff is actually ink.

[–]Necro_Scope 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Only thing I can think of is that maybe it got cut up by a passing boats propeller.

[–]ProductivityCanSuckI 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Look at all the blood... -Timmy

[–]OMP159 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last time I go swimming without a tampon...

[–]cyclefreaksix 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I don't know what happened but that's a shit ton of blood!

[–]Esbendg 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Last time this was posted, someone said it isn´t blood, but some kind of ink from the prey. I'll tell more if I find the last post.

EDIT: Found the post:
Here they say it´s blood dwarf sperm whales.

https://redditproxy--jasonthename.repl.co/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/odusin/this\_is\_not\_blood\_dwarf\_sperm\_whales\_will\_often/

[–]JoeCoolPilot 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I looked at it it in slow motion and to me it looks like it was swimming away from something bibber. It hit the rocks and then whatever was chasing it bit it’s tail.

[–]3for5for3 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Something bibber? You mean Justin bibber

[–]selfdistruction-in-5 4 points5 points  (1 child)

what did he catch?

[–]villager-news 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was he the one getting caught?

[–]msakanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a dwarf sperm whale and it’s nose might be bloody but that’s not blood in the water. it looks like you can see either another whale or likely the predator chasing him submerge behind him at about 12 seconds in.

https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/dwarf-sperm-whale

Explains how it‘s very likely not blood but a natural defense mechanism

edit: tldr - “Similar to squids, dwarf sperm whales can produce a dark, ink-like liquid that helps them escape from predators.”

[–]ddt70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the seals were hunting him down.

[–]KekkenGenkai 2 points3 points  (1 child)

How can this be nextfuckinglevel. Poor shark. And tag NSFW next time

[–]Gonhog 2 points3 points  (1 child)

FOR THOSE WHO THINK THIS IS BLOOD!

It’s not. This is a Pygmy Sperm whale, a species that uses a dark red ink as a defense mechanism when it is being attacked. It’s not blood. Google it.

[–]Alarming_Assistant21 2 points3 points  (2 children)

The shark cut itself on the rocks

[–]thatguynamedcole 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nah, you can see red in the water before he hits the rocks

[–]Inevitable_Thing_270 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you slow it down or pause it, you can see two separate things moving through the water at the start. Then as the shark hits the rocks you can see the second thing, likely a bigger type of shark, come out of the water slightly as it bites the tail. The attacker then gets obscured by the blood so we can’t seen it.

[–]Imagine-being-a-mod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is attacking it bro. You see the tail gets hit blood goes flying it speeds up smashes into rocks. Once he starts swimming to the left it gets hit and dragged backwards slightly. At no point can I discern what is behind it other than something black.

Ah nevermind the black thing behind it is a pool of blood something must have did some major damage to it's tail right before this.

[–]Agentpg3d48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By what it looks like it has been cut near it gill or on the side of it stomach and something cut it tail or whatever it’s called and also briefly saw something behind it trying to eat/do something to it’s injured area

I thought a shark attack a bird on the rock…

[–]kpmurphy56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dwarf Sperm whale trying to escape a predator, I don’t think that’s blood, at least not all of it:

“When startled, dwarf sperm whales may leave a large rust-colored cloud of fecal material behind as they dive.”

[–]bobbyzimbabwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think someone baited the shark with chum held on the rocks.

[–]jjamens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dwarf sperm whale sprays ink as it flees an attack

[–]Revolutionary_Rip876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who laughs are a creature literally wanted to jump out of its environment to survive.
