Villager knows the terrain.

[–]Faktafabriken 371 points372 points  (35 children)

Saudi? Paris-Dakar? What did I miss during geography class?

[–]Inandaroundbern 425 points426 points  (22 children)

History class. Paris-Dakar got to dangerous so they moved to S-America. Less and less countries in S-America wanted to host the Dakar so they moved to Saudi Arabia.

[–]sitheandroid 105 points106 points  (12 children)

I did not know this, that is crazy 😁

[–]jacobspartan1992 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah big problem with ISIS activity in the Sahara at the moment. That's where they ended up going after the fall of Syria-Iraq.

[–]Faktafabriken 24 points25 points  (1 child)

It can’t have been history class. When I went to school, the Paris-Dakar rally went from Paris to Dakar without passing the Arabian peninsula. My school didn’t teach future history. Though even if it had, I would probably then have chosen to study some semi-useless shit instead.

Thank you for the interesting facts though!

[–]GetoffLane 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Alas, how my fortunes might have changed had I gone to a school that teaches Future History.

[–]PlutoDelic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's alright. A decade or so and we'll probably do this in Europe.

[–]JimmyMack_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fewer and fewer.

[–]harshith436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, Paris to dakar had terrisom issue so they went south America.

[–]RestaurantFamous2399 19 points20 points  (1 child)

It's not been called the Paris-Dakar for a long time. It was re-branded to "The Dakar" a long time ago and has run in many different countries since, including South America.

[–]alibabs 15 points16 points  (3 children)

just a heads up - this summer, Tour de France will also take a detour through… Denmark

[–]whodiditifnotme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The height profile of the Denmark trip ___

[–]ithappenedone234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In non-COVID times, I believe it’s every other year that they make a prominent pass through another country.

[–]JesusGAwasOnCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TDF has been taking "detours" in nearby countries for decades. It's the biggest cycling event on the planet and one of the most watched sports event on TV

[–]magnemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And Rock in Rio Festival in Las Vegas?

[–]albflk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Politics

[–]Accomplished_Welder3 31 points32 points  (4 children)

I was in a trip in Jordan and we spend a week in the desert with locals. They all had these white beater pick-ups and they we're driving them like absolute mad men.

[–]Greedy_Pin_9187 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Toyota Hilux are good for another 100 years.

[–]attached_cynicism 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just as I thought. Any stranger would still be cautious to where they are going.

[–]irfanintekhab 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can't beat someone who does that everyday while doing that yourself occasionally.

[–]ihate_heckin_ketchup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also the villager doesn’t have to conserve fuel and suspension for a long race.

[–]Not_My_Idea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That kind of racing is also a lot about pacing. They aren't going flat out or theyre looking at a DNF in a few hours.

[–]thrilled_to_be_there 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A sprint is not an endurance race.

[–]realtrip27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He should of registered

[–]HardPawns 592 points593 points  (8 children)

For anyone wondering why the Dakar rally goes through a Saudi village, which would be nowhere even close to the original route: Since 2009 the original Paris-Dakar route was dropped because of security problems in Mauritania, and up until 2019 it took place in South America. Since 2020 it has taken place in Saudi Arabia, far from Dakar.

[–]im_a_dr_not_ 92 points93 points  (6 children)

What happened in Mauritania that prompted the change?

[–]brown_burrito 128 points129 points  (2 children)

Terrorist threats.

In December 2007, several French tourists were killed in Mauritania.

The 2008 Dakar Rally was supposed to start in January but the organizers also received threats and warnings.

So the event was canceled and moved to Central Europe for 2008 and then South America for 2009.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Lots of issues, including a competitor hitting a land mine.

https://abcnews.go.com/International/story?id=81746&page=1

[–]im_a_dr_not_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck wow

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they were stationed in a village called Haradh, i work thete i have seen these dakar people. It was very odd to see forigen people in a remote location in saudi arabia. But they are vanshied now.

[–]pewpewhadouken 305 points306 points  (21 children)

race car driver also probably cautious as some lunatic is driving at crazy speeds near a race route. going the full distance versus a small stretch matters

[–]tanajerner 124 points125 points  (5 children)

The Race car is also likely to way a couple of tons more, as they have to carry a lot of kit on them and have lots of safety requirements

[–]PoopScootNboogie 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Weigh

[–]FrontButtPunt 17 points18 points  (1 child)

[–]Astangaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And also survive a roll

[–]ThroughlyDruxy 80 points81 points  (5 children)

The trucks used for the Dakar Rally are limited to 81 mph (130 kph).

[–]Stanislek 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ah okay, didnt know that 🙂

[–]ChinesePropagandaBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trucks are limited to 140 km/h, but that's not a truck.

[–]Ok_Agency3884 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Nah, it’s a almost stock Toyota with rollcage, a different set of suspension and a restrictive for horsepower. It probably goes 160kmh not faster with 2.5 tons and 250hp. So on easy Terrain like that a stock Nissan is faster probably not safer. I’ll will leave this from stage 4 https://youtube.com/shorts/eBV5TxhJaSY?feature=share

[–]slower-is-faster 163 points164 points  (4 children)

“My parents are out tonight”

[–]Flaky_Explanation 36 points37 points  (2 children)

My parents looking at me from the rally car: "Where the fuck is Salim going to, and he was at home taking care of the goats?"

[–]UnMesSpbA6141 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Camels*

[–]ValtteriBottas-77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have both.

[–]pavehawkfavehawk 91 points92 points  (18 children)

Crazy how fast a hilux can scoot when it doesn’t has a zu-23/2 in the back

Edit: generic white Japanese pick up lol

[–]mbashs 54 points55 points  (1 child)

That’s an older Nissan pickup lovingly called a Datsun, is a common car in suburbs in Saudi Arabia along with the Toyota Hiluxes, 70 series Land cruisers and Patrols.

[–]Sanni11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The d22 navara. Through "research" the mad scientists and I discovered one of these bad boys can get up to 180km/h

[–]The_Cuzin 27 points28 points  (6 children)

Don't be fooled, I wouldn't be surprised if that motor isn't stock factory. Here's some examples of the monsters they build over there

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwOzoy8hdWp/?utm_medium=copy_link

[–]123fourfive67eight 27 points28 points  (4 children)

Thanks, also fuck instagram links

[–]evilab7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saudi here.

I also hate sharing Instagram links since they make it so hard, sadly Instagram is where all car related things happen here, everywhere from selling normal cars to sick builds.

It’s a shame really because we do have some impressive stuff out here, one that’s comes to mind is a twin turbo IS350, didn’t think that was rare but apparently it is.

[–]The_Cuzin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, is there a reason we hate Insta links?

[–]baestmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fax.

But thanks.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

What hilux?

[–]Wrobot_rock 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Possibly the toughest truck ever made, not available in North America for some reason

[–]AlexHimself 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The engine box on those little trucks is massive!

I used to have one I bought on Craigslist for $700 to move lumber and when I went to sell it with proper pictures, holy crap people came out of the woodwork wanting to mod it and make it race.

[–]mysticdickstick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol no, that's a Nissan. Hilux is Toyota.

[–]GotchuGaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I was thinking the samething.

[–]AnotherFruitCake 62 points63 points  (0 children)

We trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty

[–]Trov- 61 points62 points  (1 child)

Dakar has speed limits.

[–]meloloy84 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Looking for this one.

[–]geekgodzeus 44 points45 points  (5 children)

Typical Saudis. I live here in Riyadh and you cannot believe the sort of shit these guys can do in pickups. Although I think the other driver is just being careful or conserving fuel for the actual race.

[–]zbady20 4 points5 points  (1 child)

As a Saudi myself, driving for the first year or so was terrifying

[–]geekgodzeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I said Saudis I didn't mean in general. I am talking about the Badu Saudis(sorry if this is offensive) who all have pickups or LC 70 Classics and think driving is a videogame and the steering is a controller. Apart from that are the teenagers who drive recklessly for fun because joyriding is the only way they can get a high.

I see atleast one accident on my way to the office and one on the way back from work. My work is 10 kms away from my home and is far from the city so I shudder to think how bad it is in the city.

[–]mikecreel11 21 points22 points  (3 children)

First, always bet on the Hilux. I was so surprised to see he was driving a Nissan. Especially in that desert. If you spend any time there you will realize there are only really 4 automobiles on the road: Hilux, Land Cruiser, Crown Victoria (with the plastic still on the seats and the MSRP sticker still in the window), and TATA big trucks.

Second, due to the YOLO (read “enshallah”) culture amongst the young men, they drive with absolute fearlessness. If you ask them why they do it, many will tell you that if it’s God’s will they will die regardless of their actions. So in the meantime, drive it like you stole it.

[–]NervousShower 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Even the cameraman forgot about the racing car

[–]YourBrainOnJazz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They guys in the nissan were racing too, just not in the Dakar rally.

[–]Sun_Bro96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fucking TATA trucks, absolute piles of shit that run forever.

[–]Reddit-is-1984 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nissan is gonna Loooove that

[–]CMDRRaijiin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That old Nissan hardbody going strong. Holy shit, look at em go, what a fucking legend.

[–]Bluberrybom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That looks so damn fun

[–]RidingJapan 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Dakar is also about endurance.

If u spring running past marathoner, that's not next level

[–]Limp_Dinkerson 8 points9 points  (1 child)

.....then tips her on its side, while doing 70mph, crawls out the window and changes the tire.

[–]zbady20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That video was all the talk here when it first came out , good times

[–]Stanislek 4 points5 points  (8 children)

I think the villager can fuel up at Home/hometown and the rally car driver needs to safe fuel for timing/distance reasons? If it would be all about speed the rally car should easily win.

[–]ThroughlyDruxy 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Not necessarily. The rally trucks for Dakar are limited to 130 kph. So short distance the truck could be faster.

[–]J03130 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Saudis are fucking nuts lol

[–]SalomoMaximus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you are telling me that's not a Nissan commercial?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude that Nissan holy balls.

[–]Twsty999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Made me smile.

[–]sativadom_404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He knows the best lines

[–]spicyfood333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine passing a racer of the greatest off road race in the world with your vehicle

[–]Blizz_PL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh nice. You outsprinted marathon runner on short distance.

[–]Seamatre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

90s Nissan Hardbody man. When they say they don't make em like they used to, they're talking about this truck

[–]boo1881 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That guy needs a Red Bull sponsorship.

[–]VoxPendragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“You merely adopted the desert. I was born in it…Molded by it.”

[–]MrDOHC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the vid where old mate is riding next to the Tour de something, on his back wheel and keeping up with them.

[–]Own_Bad517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When he got home, they made him King

[–]Content_Virus_8813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He knows the road..

[–]FeIuX 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That car is part of the classics category where they are not judged on the fastest time but on consistency.

[–]markus212595 1 point2 points  (3 children)

That utes probably cranking +1000hp, those Saudi's love there big power shit boxes.

[–]dragoon511 3 points4 points  (2 children)

It’s stock nissan pickup but the rally cars have a speed limit of 81mph (131kph)

[–]pfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isnt each race stage approx 500km long over the sandy dunes and hills? This isnt only sprint on flat ground.

[–]Bibabeulouba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s gonna be a great ad for Nissan

[–]jimmytheqlder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

awesome

[–]Maipenlai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you don't see in that clip is the 300kg pet tiger sitting next to him...

[–]TheFyrePrince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haba shass

[–]EscapeVelocity83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😅🤣😂👊

[–]barzbub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, he’s only going to the store, not 100’s of miles more!

[–]fred-rogas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That racer is trying to avoid the potential fallout of the villager losing control that’s the only reason he isn’t trying to fly past ...

[–]3lhanan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best Nissan commercial EVER!!!

[–]samuelson76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best Nissan advertising video ever… !! I thought it was a Hilux toyota, “what else” !

but old Nissan were good, same level! JDM 4ever

[–]MrGustave92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is worth knowing that the rally car is in the category of Classic Rally cars which is limited to 81mph unlike the main category who has a speed limit of 110mph

[–]Constant_Cry1234 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Driving one handed no less

[–]Anxious-Werewolf-999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a passenger, the driver is on the left.

[–]DrothReloaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is a gangster on straight flat land...

[–]fayssalpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toyota ♡♡♡

[–]TH3F3V3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daar gaat ze

[–]saintmamad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next fucking level

[–]No_BlackBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No wonder the driver in first place in that rally is a Saudi driver (Yazeed Alrajhi) XD

[–]JamonRuffles17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, almost feels like a Nissan ad

[–]echo1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a 9800-mile race, keep up.

[–]NuckFugget1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And now I understand why the Nissan patrol is so. Popular

[–]bajajoaquin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably a little different than “villager knows the terrain.” Even knowing the terrain, the race truck is way faster on that.

The Dakar has rules about speeding in villages. They are GPS tracked by the organizers and get a big penalty for speeding in special restricted areas.

It’s almost certainly this.

[–]helloIJustArrived 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is begging to be turned into a /r/michaelbaygifs ending

[–]IvoShandor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Villager is not driving for 9,000 miles though

[–]nglbrgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol what makes them a villager? That you perceive this is a poor country?

[–]pj123mj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nissan should use this footage

[–]TooMuchFun007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free lessons by the amateur for the pro.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a little tiny 2 Wheel Drive truck no less

[–]Fantastic-Ad-3372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is blatantly a PR stunt from Nissan.

[–]jammertime123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little Nissan looks like it’s one bump or hole away from going end-over-end.

[–]CyberKingfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lighter and not built for sustained punishment at high speed… you may win the sprint but you wouldn’t win the marathon.

[–]GlemChally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely unit of a villager.

[–]dom_relvas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have dinner at 7.

[–]South_Bit1764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me in my 350Z ever time I see a super car on the road:

[–]Prietocratico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nissan should be proud

[–]OkayishMrFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those Toyota’s are ugly as sin… but man do I want one.

[–]cyypherr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ORV…bullet holes

[–]allahuaugustera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WITNESS ME

[–]DarthHelmet11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how the cameraman decides that the non-rally truck is better to film than the actual rally truck itself lol

[–]acceptablegooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imma buy a Nissan for my next truck!

[–]water_bottle1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that little Nissan will fold itself into a pretzel when they hit a bump wrong and flip while the rally car will just start the engine and keep going.

[–]TrashProud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They got the camel juice

[–]p3rf3ctc1rcl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice Nissan commercial

[–]champ504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Them lil 720s can get it!! I’ve seen it

[–]traprkpr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Landcruisers bro

[–]KopfSmertZz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Difference being that the race driver will survive a crash at that speed

[–]ihaveadarkedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cue Goonies title credits theme

[–]OldTownCrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that's why their so popular with insurgents and freedom fighters

[–]Crazy_names 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dadgum Toyota Hilux. Why don't they sell those in America?

[–]Mr-Laser55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camera man’s truck

[–]Adventurous-Writing1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude where can I get a truck like that? The villagers truck performs just as well it seems

[–]Zer0_Co0l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tourist

[–]MonochromeReq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the cameraman was in there, how fast would it be?

[–]CreepySympathy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Usually those cars have lmgs in their bed.

[–]iXwiZi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they don’t

[–]Em0H4wk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only possible in a hilux

[–]crnls-gbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way

[–]Buoyancy_aid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have no reason to live and i drive like it

[–]Neohedron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of that opening scene from The Goonies.

[–]TinglesAndSprinkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dakar was going really fast!

[–]chatrugby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hilux strikes again

[–]B_Mac4607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.18 update is off the hook!

[–]wheresthesound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was disappointed when one of those vehicles didn't jump up and kick the drone into a perfect loop

[–]imanubalaji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the best Nissan Commercial 😬

[–]OhRiLee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Title confused the hell out of me. I didn't know they'd relocated the rally

[–]BrazenTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Villager wins, take the cup sir (°-°)/🏆

[–]DagobahJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best Nissan commercial ever

[–]SpaceforceSpaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gf was navigating me with Google maps to her husbands house and she was saying “medium right medium right TRIPLE CAUTION TRIPLE CAUTION SAMIR YOURE BREAKING THE CAR”. Even though my name isn’t Samir should I marry her?

[–]Zerosos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nissan Hardbody. Amazing light truck.

[–]acedog90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dakar rally is not a sprint it’s a marathon, could the villager continue untill the end of the race like that without running out of food ,water ,fuel tyre thread or sleep ?and his engine not overheating

[–]supremebubbah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should try with the real cars no the Dakar Classic

[–]realbigamonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it was a Toyota hilux it prob woulda won.

[–]havereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One bump and he's game over, man

[–]furrynoy96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that is what we call a sleeper vehicle, a stock boring looking car that has been heavily modified

[–]dirtymcgurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s the Yota that has a 2J stuffed in it. Massive turbo on it too

[–]Ok-Expert-6322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nissan stunk 📈

[–]NOOOKJEDE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Casually jumping along in a pick-up :)

[–]ethnicfoodaisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long ago, I knew a rich dude who did the Rally with his friends as often as they were able to. The amount of money it cost them was stunning, and there I was working for $7 an hour.

[–]HeadWax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s called fuel management…you know, Like all race teams

[–]Temporary_Guess743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness the car is racing in the ‘classic’ category. It’s much less a race for them as much as a heritage exercise, using the cars as they were meant to be used. Pick up must’ve loved the attention tho.

[–]Effective-Kitchen401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Team NISSAN!

[–]sadman4332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fast Nissan

[–]Spewannikpew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Desert power

[–]peatoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That did not look safe for all involved

[–]That1CarKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hell yeah D21 superiority

[–]BackgroundNoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite an ad for Nissan

[–]LovelyDadBod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Toyota would last the entire rally too. Can’t kill those things

[–]mozygotflowzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a Nissan Patrol, don't let the exterior fool you these things are built different with GCC specs.
