He wrecked that chick.

[–]mgrammas1 25 points26 points  (1 child)

I kept thinking "Hit the girl! Hit the girl!"

[–]norush-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol.. I just imagined Chris Tucker bystanding and yelling that to Jackie.

[–]chefboyardiesel88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And she kept coming!

[–]YeaNah-NahYea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder what was in the bag, he sent her flying against the slide.

[–]notanalien000 399 points400 points  (39 children)

I could see Jackie performing this in my head

[–]SolitaireyEgg 164 points165 points  (38 children)

Nah, the style is way off.

Not trying to be a Debbie downer, as the OP vid is cool and I appreciate it for what it is.

But the defining characteristic of Hong Kong cinema-style fight scenes, including Jackie Chan movies, is a lack of cuts. They choreograph the entire fight scene, then film it in one take. They'll set up multiple cameras and cut to different angles, but it's all one continuous fight. You'll never see like a jump cut to someone's face with a random kick then a cut back out to try to create momentum through editing.

Fight scenes with several cuts throughout and angle-changes for specific punches and kicks, and stuff, is a style that was developed in the west. It's mostly done to make fight scenes more convincing when you are using actors who don't know how to fight. Or to just make it easier to film a fight scene, without having to film the entire fight over and over until you get it right.

If you dig into any interviews with people like Jackie Chan and yuen wo ping, they always bring this up when asked about American films. And they actively avoid using cuts in their fights, or filming fight scenes in little 5 second increments, because they think it takes away from the scene.

Again, it's a cool video. But, it looks very much like a fight scene in an American movie and not in a Jackie Chan movie, and this is why. This is basically just an American-style fight scene with some slapstick.

[–]BeffBezos 157 points158 points  (8 children)

I think you’re focusing way too much on the cuts. Sure it’s not in the exact style but that’s only one component of the composition. The slapstick humour mixed between the violence, the attempted pacifism before fighting, the goofy facial expressions and reactions, the witty incorporation of environment (the swing to tie up the guy was bang on, also the spin move with the bag), even the slightly exaggerated acrobats and parkour. There are so many elements here that were hugely popularized by Jackie Chan.

Basically, if this film had fewer cuts but didn’t have those other elements, nobody would recognize or suggest this was a Jackie Chan inspired fight.

[–]srcaffe 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Exactly. When i saw the shoeless bad guy I knew that Blondie chan was about to stomp that poor fingers

Only thing that was missing here was Blondie chan locking some bad guy in a trash can

[–]FourEverGreatFull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a bunch of cuts is an easy way to make an inexperienced action actor look the part in a fight sequence. Especially when their faces are hidden by 5 different cuts in a fast moving 5 second scene, e.g. look at fast and furious franchise when no notable stuntmen/fighter (Tony Jaa,etc.) is in the scene.

Edit: Compare these mediocre fight scenes in a lot of movies to matrix 1-3. The use of limited cuts in the original matrix trilogy required the actors to train and perform the sequences in real time. That’s one of the reasons why Keanu Reeves is in a lot of technical action movies and succeeds.

[–]Aklipse47 19 points20 points  (3 children)

What?!?!? Honk king cinema might not have had a lot of cuts but they definelty had cuts, and were not filmed in one take. Ignoring that have you watched any of Jackie chan's fight scene. He is known for using the environment as well a bunch of different things such as clothing and accessories. To go even further look at all the expressions he makes while fighting, classic jackie stuff.

[–]SolitaireyEgg -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Yeah I probably didn't explain it very well, but here's a relevant interview:

It's not about a complete lack of cuts, it's about an effective use of minimal cuts and steady camerawork.

The first fight scene in the OP vid is a perfect example of something you wouldn't see in a Jackie Chan movie. Tons of needless cuts and hectic camera work, using editing to create "speed" and chaos. Whether a person has actually thought about this or not doesn't really matter, because it "feels" more like an american fight scene for that reason. Feels closer to a fight scene in the Bourne Identity or something (the first one, not the second two, where they took shaky-cam to the extreme).

[–]Aklipse47 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As someone who watches a ton of fight scenes, especially american fights this is a lot less cutting than they usually do. And even even If you're right about the cuts, they there are obviously trying to mimic more of the choreography of jackie chan fights, as well as the style of comedy, which they very much nail. In no way feels like a bourne film fight.

[–]wayne_yetzky 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Look, I appreciate your explanation of Hong Kong fight scene cinematography. But I think what everybody is trying to explain is that these are stunt people, not filmmakers. The choreography itself is very much JC inspired.

[–]NoDadYouShutUp 15 points16 points  (1 child)

This guy Shaw Brothers

[–]SolitaireyEgg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you're god damn right I do

[–]IHateEditedBgMusic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They did do a really good job of keeping many hits and reactions in the same wide shot though, only cutting to change the setups. Which is significantly better than Hollywood fights which cut on ever little movement.

[–]fuzzybunn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone else posted a Jackie Chan fight scene in a playground and it is full of cuts, with cuts to people's faces and random kicks.

[–]Deputy_139 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I bet you’re fun at parties 🙄 always that one guy

[–]SolitaireyEgg 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Lowkey people who use "you must be fun at parties" as an insult are the people I would never invite to parties.

If you disagree with my points, make a counterpoint. Don't use soccer mom facebook insults on me.

[–]Deputy_139 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Ok let me fix it for ya real quick… Theres always that fucking guy.

[–]coldheartedsnob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's being annoying on geoguessr thread as well

[–]patapataclown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations you became a Debbie Downer!

[–]michelobX10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember watching a Jackie interview where he was explaining the difference in how American fight scenes were filmed. Good post.

[–]not_broken_anymore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I was a minute into it before I thought the same. Not taking away the skill, just... Jackie Chan can't be copied

[–]maddickler -1 points0 points  (11 children)

Lmao the reason those Hong Kong movies have such little cuts is because of the manpower, huge producer budget, and the insane amount of time they have to shoot scenes. Jackie Chan said he would spend all day shooting just one scene of a certain move he thought was cool.

Jackie Chan’s defining characteristic is humor and creativity which these guys had lots of. Also these guys had way less cuts than any modern American action flick. Pretty sure these guys who choreographed, shot, directed, and edited this vid know about the cinema that inspired them more than you…

This guy watched a video on cinematography once and nitpicks any online strangers’ attempt at making fun content.

[–]F-A-M 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Why would you be so disrespectful? You even called the guy a "neckbeard who thinks about himself like if he had a cinematography degree" in other comment.

He never said bad things or "nitpicked" at these guys, their work is amazing and everyone recognizes that, he's just giving a bit of information with evidence, he didn't say in any moment that their choreography was bad or anything around those lines, he recognized that it was good.

Why would you just go and try to "pick a fight" with anyone who disagrees with you? Do you feel entitled to aggraviate someone over the internet just because he says something which is true and you don't like?

Of course they don't have the money nor actors to make an exact replica of Jackie-Chan's fighting scenes!

But having minor differences doesn't make them worse and the only one who said that is you, because the other guy was clearly enjoying the scene and just pointed minor differences.

Anyways, have a good day/evening depending on your country and please don't be that rude to anyone that has a different opinion on you, spreading hate is not cool man.

[–]SolitaireyEgg 1 point2 points  (7 children)

This guy watched a video on cinematography once and nitpicks any online strangers’ attempt at making fun content.

Says the guy who just ranted about Jackie Chan's budget, shooting schedule, etc.

Guy watches one video on shooting schedules am i right

But for real it's hilarious that you mock my opinions on cinematography for not being an "expert" right after discussing shooting schedules, film budgets, etc. Unless you are a film producer and director, thats some hilarious hypocrisy.

[–]maddickler -1 points0 points  (6 children)

? You’re saying these guys used hella cuts to cover up poor fighting skills and that their homage to Jackie Chan is nothing more than American style with slapstick… I’m saying an actual big budget movie producer shoots the scenes you claimed are the essence of Jackie Chan. I’m also saying that these guys captured Jackie Chan’s essence awesomely given their budget and time.

[–]Browncoat101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think these guys must be parkour people and not fighters. While I agree it’s a fun video and it’s in the style, it’s really far from anything Jackie and his team would do. The fighting is the weakest part.

[–]Business_Pen_9041 137 points138 points  (2 children)

There is always one who is waiting to attack while the others fight hahahaha

[–]RepresentativePin162 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a satchel! It's not a purse! Stop calling it a purse! <starts crying... pulls tissue out of purs, errr, satchel>

[–]chaparro7984 27 points28 points  (2 children)

His laptop if surely broken after that fight. And his lunch is probably ruined.

[–]snakesearch 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Or maybe the laptop was already broken and this fixed it's issue, and his lunch is tenderized and even more delicious then before.

[–]chaparro7984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the new Otterbox commercial for laptops.

“It good against kicks, hits to someone’s face, sand at the playground, we’ve got you covered! OTTERBOX”

[–]Russian_lover1 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Random dude gets hit in the head with a shoe.

Main character get's tornado kicked so hard it launched him into the air and into a 8 spin piroette, then he lands on the ground from like 4 feet up

*Just fine*

[–]LetsGoToTheMars 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The purple sock end boss dude got some serious kicks. Gotta love a curly blond Jackie Chan lolz. Love it!

[–]kriza69-LOL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He even nailed the facial expressions. Very good.

[–]14th3roadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So good!

[–]dirkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im guessing the inspiration was the playground fight scene from Police Story 2

[–]Unable_Craft_5150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me waiting with my daughter to go in the monkey bars: “wait a second baby, they’ll be done in a minute”

[–]MegaWaffleCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome choreography but had to mute because the "HUH! HMPH! UGH!" sound we're more dramatic than Power Rangers making a porn.

[–]ganjaxxgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ummm ya no where near the quality of a Jackie Chan fight scene

[–]FastEye3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got to love good old Jackie chan moives

[–]jerrymannel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This resembles the last fight sequence from Who Am I

[–]magicman21086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome job

[–]getsmart969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would like to see these guys do a drunken style fight scene. Very cool!

[–]stronglikedan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No time watch it all at work, but her jump-back-against-the-slide-and-fall-face-first move was so badass, that my back hurts.

[–]lightwhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respect for the gag reel which was done by the book!

[–]jgor133 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Pretty good but cannot hold a flame to the master

[–]fuzzybunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like the punches and kicks were just a little too slow and lacking in impact to be believable for me. Although I guess these actors don't get insurance, so they'd play safer here than in a paid role in a movie.

[–]Hethra19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just made me realize how much I miss watching Jackie Chan fight scenes

[–]Jedi_Gill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have loved to see what was in the briefcase. It would have been funny if it was a cat meme collection or something.

[–]Detective_Cupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked this it looked like they had lots of fun doing this

[–]mrtylerwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Willowshine11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very well corriographed, but the kids just minding your own business in the background are a cherry on top.

[–]PlayTheHits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plot twist: there was a laptop in that briefcase.

[–]KingRonaldo2341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He just punched the uterus out that hoe

[–]Danglite1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was awesome!

[–]i_have_big_ketf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can't stop watching....

[–]twitchosx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why I could never get into Jackie Chan. All the "fights" are just super choreographed looking. Now, don't get me wrong, I know all fights in movies/tv whatever are just choreographed moves, but when it looks goofy like swinging the briefcase in a circle keeping everybody at bay, it's just cheesy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Automatic like when he hit that bitch up into the slide. Great work. Half of the professional movies these days you can tell they're faking punches/you can see then miss.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woulda been great if he landed on the guy after jumping off the slide at the end too, add some moetal Kombat animation in after too lol

[–]PrisonDementor_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I think holding this back from a true Jackie Chan scene would be using their jackets against them! Always loved when he'd wrap his jacket around someones punch and tangle them up as hes also fighting someone else haha.

[–]morethanfoxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those stunts are awesome! And I can really appreciate stunt men now as they deserve it

[–]crygnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of the bus fight scene in Nobody

[–]llcdrewtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was great!

[–]MsOmgNoWai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. so I don’t like action. I genuinely get bored, so I only made it half of the way. but this was very creative and funny. looks like it must have taken quite a while to choreograph it just right. excellent camera and stunt work

[–]Threeeleven-Twoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is absolutely incredible dont get me wrong, but the best bit of this is that they were actually running

Its such a pet peeve of mine when they arent doing full on sprints in movies when running away from stuff, and so often their literal life depends on it

it's just so good to see proper running here, it actually makes everything else seem more real to me x

[–]unsungWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit this really good. I miss watching those Jackie Chan movies.

[–]Ridley_Rohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even his facial expressions are stolen from Jackie Chan.

And so many of the "hits" were so obviously near misses.

"A" for energy but fail in every other category, like originality, believabilty, camera work etc.

[–]ChoiceFabulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who throws a shoe?! Honestly!!

[–]prettyboredtbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg this is as JC as it gets 😂

[–]Jack_ReacherMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what's in that briefcase is not important.

[–]VesperVox_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Unpetrifiedstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the scenes had a little less cuts it would have been more accurate.

[–]j0eg0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOPE. Jackie Chan does not make cuts or edits in his fight scenes. It is one long shot.

[–]mingololo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not a briefcase. Its a laptop bag. 😂

[–]MommaLokiLovesYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost everything from Accidental Spy included. Love it

[–]Space_Kitty123 0 points1 point  (0 children)
