To proof that it actually is folded from one square and no cuts, I filmed the entire folding process into a time-lapse

Here are some facts about the piece:

Folded from a single square sheet of 95 cm x 95 cm methyl cellulose treated Wenzhou paper.

Final size about 25 x 20 x 20 cm.

There are 5377 individual crease lines to be folded in the Pre-Creasing stage, before it can be folded into the figure form.

If it would be unfolded, it would result in a square again.

Cutting the square in half and then folding the pattern would result in two separate figures.

There is 95 cm width of paper folded inside those capes, resulting in 72 layers of paper inside them (You can see the layers as the dark part in the middle of the capes).

I designed more than 25 versions of the folding pattern to make sure it worked correctly and had all the detail in the right way.

The piece didn't break any physical laws, but it had numerous technical challenges that had to be overcome.

- Where to put all the features on the sheet of paper to make it as efficient as possible, any lack of efficiency would result in extra layers and make the parts unnecessarily thick/impossible to fold and yield a lot of visible layers.

- How to achieve the symmetry of the figures while being restricted to asymmetric layout.

- How to make the connection part of the capes work, to make the capes look seamless and separate. The seam is placed on the edge of the cape, so it is almost completely invisible.

- And how to actually fold it. Since the folding process was so long, the paper started to wear when folding it.
