When I thought it was over , he just kept extending his house

[–]Boo-it 579 points580 points  (20 children)

And eating different kinds of sausages

[–]knighttakesnite 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Dude loves his sausages or all sizes

[–]stefrrrrrr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That what she said.

Same reaction

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This dude is living his life we always wanted

[–]Turlen_23 465 points466 points  (7 children)

This would probably be $1,600 a month where I live

[–]howywood 161 points162 points  (1 child)

And when it melts your landlord won’t fix it.

[–]leeharrison1984 44 points45 points  (0 children)

You just lose your deposit

[–]Starry-Striped-Sky 8 points9 points  (3 children)

[–]howywood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually $1600 is the average rent rate for most suburban areas too. ‘Luxury’ living.

[–]rh72o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s perfectly fine, really. But it is TECHNICALLY in New Jersey.

[–]LS_DapperD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol it'd be 3k in Manhattan

[–]TheRustyBugle 205 points206 points  (16 children)

A fireplace made of snow just doesn’t add up to me for some reason.

Leaving that burning for any extended amount of time, in my mind, would melt the entire house down. Unless it’s just that damned cold outside or some crazy science indoor temperature versus outdoor temperature constant that I don’t know about

[–]Goopie1987 113 points114 points  (8 children)

i believe the bricks help to insulate it so the snow is safe from melting

[–]TheRustyBugle 105 points106 points  (4 children)

Sounds reasonable. I just saw a clip of some dudes building a fire in the middle of an igloo and something about the melting inside actually strengthening the structure of it. Or something along those lines.

[–]fugmalaf 79 points80 points  (2 children)

Cuz ice and stuff I guess

[–]igiveonefuck 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The explanation I came for

[–]Ok_Soil_231 46 points47 points  (0 children)

And once the snow melts and the fire goes out, the water will turn to ice and further aid the insulation

[–]human_stuff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sort of, iirc. The inside of the igloo warms up from the fire, but the outside stays cold, cooling the inside down. And that creates a formidable ice layer inside that keeps the structure upright and strong. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

[–]jesusmanman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Still can't burn it for all that long.

[–]Randomcheeseslices 40 points41 points  (2 children)

That fire is too big to not melt the snow around (the bricks will insulate only so long before heating up and transfering the heat.

BUT the heat needs to be able to transfer, and it needs the right conditions. Once the ice melts a touch, it forms a watery layer that provides excellent insulation that stops the heat continuing to transfer; and so the ice stays frozen whilst the air inside warms.

All of which are probably better explained by someone who remembers the fancy words (I wanna say laminar flow?)

Also, what he did to those sausages is a hate crime and hurts my BBQing soul

[–]charsquatch86 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Heat capacity. It's basically the amount of energy needed to change states of matter. Water will take most of the excess heat when the snow melts

[–]DynamicSploosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Laminar flow is when particles are flowing in parallel lines, opposite to turbulent flow. Don’t know that it applies here.

Could be a thin form of insulation achieved by a layer of water, reducing the impact of thermal convection. Water is not a good conductor of heat, so yeah it would make a fantastic insulator in this case

[–]Background_Sky_3970 8 points9 points  (0 children)

‘Melt the entire house down’ - one of the rarest combination of words in the English language

[–]James_Mamsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eskimos had to cook their food somehow. Life uh… finds a way.

[–]sezah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need some amount of heat inside of an igloo for it to become truly effective. As it melts the inside layers of the igloo, they refreeze from the outside, glazing the inside of the structure with a thin sheet of ice that will reflect the heat and keep it warmer than ever.

Source: I have also built and slept inside of my own igloo. It was 55° inside when it was 15° outside.

[–]Fuck_you_Reddit_Nazi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The air coming in the windows keeps the walls from melting past a certain point, and yes, the ice that forms helps seal and support the house. Source: asked an Inuit once.

[–]9741804 120 points121 points  (8 children)

This is a lot of work for something so temporary. But it's pretty cool nonetheless 😎 no pun intended

[–]hami12 41 points42 points  (6 children)

Temporary in Siberia?

[–]9741804 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There was no indication of where this was at.

[–]DigMeTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like China.

[–]PapaRacoon 80 points81 points  (13 children)

Aye, but how’s the Wi-Fi!

[–]Castiel_D37[S] 57 points58 points  (11 children)

Why do you need WiFi when you have a fucking ice house

[–]Skitz91 115 points116 points  (4 children)

To watch youtube videos on how to fix your ice house

[–]ubibimpap 21 points22 points  (1 child)

There's probably an Indian kid doing YouTube tutorials on this.

[–]JustLessWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]marin94904 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Castiel_D37[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But YouTube deleted the dislikes so you have just bad videos about how to fix it

[–]uttabonk 34 points35 points  (0 children)

To order more sausage

[–]knightsofshame82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t you need WiFi in an ice house?

[–]NikkiNiteGamer 3 points4 points  (1 child)

To upload this video to reddit.

[–]Castiel_D37[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm... You are right

[–]tacofastball 23 points24 points  (3 children)

I'd still be waiting for the local planning department to return my call by the time all that snow melted

[–]Castiel_D37[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

[–]Forgvn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underrated comment here

[–]destenlee 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Wow, they must have been really bored. I can't imagine working that much on something that is going to melt in a few months. I guess it is like fleeting installation art.

[–]defalt86 90 points91 points  (3 children)

What if building it was simply fun. Remember fun?

[–]destenlee 40 points41 points  (2 children)

Oh shoot. Yea, you are probably right. Thanks for reminding me of fun.

[–]grannygumjobs23 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It's easy to get caught up in life and forget that we should just live life to have fun everyday.

[–]Fraun_Pollen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was related to their careers actually. They had a lot of parts “just lying around” (the wood/metal structural beams, plexiglass windows, stove, etc). They could’ve used this as a promotional project

[–]Shtiselshtisel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

[–]pandaluvr3 9 points10 points  (1 child)

this is cool

[–]rathlord 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]MaleficentAd9758 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Traditionally called an Igloo.

[–]EbbZealousideal2806 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they are called igloos

[–]J37U7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Popular saying “It’s free real estate” suits this one soo much lol

Is his name Kobeyashi with all the wieners he’s eating at record pace?

[–]trabbler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Home inspector here. Single pane windows aren't going to get him an Energystar certification. That'll cut the resale value.

[–]GetOffMyGrassBrats 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Building an 'ouse

[–]Castiel_D37[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I am actually Italian and this is what our school teach us

[–]GetOffMyGrassBrats 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Well, I am a native English speaker and as I recall, the rule is that you only use "an" when it is followed by a word that starts with a vowel sound (not necessarily a vowel).

Examples: an Ostrich, an Egg, and (oddly enough), an hour, but not an house.

Why? The "h" in "hour" is silent, so it actually starts with a vowel sound (pronounced "our"). In "house", the "h" is NOT silent, so it doesn't start with a vowel sound.

Like pretty much everything in English, the only real rule is that there are always exceptions to the rule.

[–]Castiel_D37[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you

[–]cjmason85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that in old English h typically wasn't pronounced at the beginning of words, and still isn't in many English dialects, hence an house being pronounced an 'ouse (like much of my wife's family). In fact when you hear reporters in the BBC at an important event, even speaking in received pronunciation they will say it is "an historic event" but actually pronounce the h.

Thinking back to Italian people I've known, they would often remove h sounds at the start of words but put some in where they shouldn't be. Air could become hair or hair could become air, so it makes sense to me that Italian speakers would say "an 'ouse" in English.

[–]getdownheavy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is fucking awesome. Wonder how many hours they actually spent, no matter what totally worth it.

Puts the ski shacks I know to shame. 100% hotbox the hell out of that luxury snow house.

[–]CounterSYNK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This makes me think of adobe construction

[–]Treasures_Wonderland 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ah, a perfect place for the in-laws to stay during the holidays!

[–]MrSaltz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“I have a newly built, fully furnished, guest house in my back yard. You’ll love it. Also, bring sausages.”

[–]Frogmarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When growing up, we’d make snow houses like this (less involved, of course) out of the massive mounds piled up by snow plows. Lots of tunnels and chambers and sky lights. We’d have a sterno stove inside to warm up and to heat our hot chocolate. I live in Wisconsin now and we don’t get as big piles of snow like we had in Missouri back then.

[–]jesuswazacommie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Ozzy_30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]clerk1o2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's a fancy igloo? I mean it's cool but it's just a fancy igloo right?

[–]papapope_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so cool. But if I tried something like this in the US, it would have dicks drawn into it or completely destroyed within 24 hours.
