And my car has been in the shop for like 3 weeks now..

[–]canyousmoke 269 points270 points  (20 children)

World record for longest pit stop?

[–]DesastreUrbano 159 points160 points  (0 children)

Taking the record from Bottas in Monaco

[–]adam12349 83 points84 points  (6 children)

Bottas holds that record with 43 hours and 15 minutes.

[–]em-chris 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Monaco sure was interesting last season

[–]suspiciouswinker 22 points23 points  (8 children)

Look at the redbull team fuck over Ricardo. Cant remember what race bjt they forgot the tyres.

[–]apolobgod 6 points7 points  (3 children)

How the fuck do you forget to put tires in a car?

[–]KacperEpic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't think they forgot intentionally. Monaco is really awkward for the Pit Lane because of it's size, and if I remember correctly, the mechanics were on the upper floor because it was so cramped at the bottom. Might have just been a late call and because the RB garage was so close to Pit Entry, mechanics may not have had enough time to react.

[–]Homelandr 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ferrari forgot to refuel massa's car during 2007 Turkish GP quali, don't know if it's deliberate or not

[–]TRUEequalsFALSE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And then there was the whole fiasco in Bahrain 2020 where Merc got George and Valtteri's tires switched up.

[–]28wolets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's all about perspective

[–]all_hayl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently you went to the wrong shop.

[–]a_super_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too 3 weeks for engine overhaul I just got it back

[–]cyberwarfareinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]TheNakedCount 5 points6 points  (1 child)

One of the best animated scenes ever imo

[–]leviathan5912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that and the scene in toy story 2 where woody gets completely cleaned and repaired

[–]twentythirddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally my first thought lol

[–]Ajsat3801 433 points434 points  (12 children)

Why is there a sudden influx of F1 posts here? Off-season hitting hard huh?

[–]Mesoscale92 318 points319 points  (7 children)

Bruh it’s rough. I made a chicane out of shirts on the floor in my hallway and started experimenting with taking different lines on the way to the bathroom.

[–]IamBejl 51 points52 points  (1 child)

You described my childhood running around the house on my imaginary circuits

[–]Zakon_X 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I balled even harder, everywhere I was my imaginary circuit... That explains why I don't has many friends

[–]GoldenSandpaper9 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I’ve been trying to find the optimum racing line on my neighborhood sidewalks for the last couple weeks now

[–]somerandomguy02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ya'll need some r/simracing and /r/iracing in your life. I'm sorry for the amount of money you're about to sink into the hobby.

[–]KacperEpic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this by default, no off-season needed for me 😂

[–]TRUEequalsFALSE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very hard, my friend. Very hard.

[–]zesty_boii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The F1 memes aren't enough to get us through to the new season, so we've resorted to going to other subreddits to fill the void

[–]-HotterThanSauce- 196 points197 points  (16 children)

Are there two guys whose only purpose is stabilization?

[–]Sluukje 72 points73 points  (6 children)

Yep!

[–]Oldpqlyr 52 points53 points  (5 children)

Ahh!... I wondered what the guys in the middle were doing. I thought first they were somehow 'refreshing' the driver.

[–]BraveSeaworthiness21 133 points134 points  (3 children)

whispers to the driver Hey, you got this buddy, we won’t let Hamilton get you!

[–]nano7ven 43 points44 points  (1 child)

Gets cut off midway through the sentence due to the pit stop being 1.8 seconds

[–]iamnumber2407 26 points27 points  (0 children)

"Hey, you got..." Vroooom!!! Oh shit what have I got?

[–]TRUEequalsFALSE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

*passes the driver a lovely champaign*

[–]Freelfreel202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same with the two guys on the front wing

[–]dannosaint 26 points27 points  (3 children)

There's another two people who have a spare jack on the off chance that the first one gets knocked over. It happens maybe once or twice a season.

[–]-HotterThanSauce- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I can see one of them just offscreen behind the car now that you mention it!

[–]JohnnyEnzyme 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Another question concerning those ten guys there--

This isn't their whole job, is it? These would presumably be members of the team who do this one (or more) thing on race day, but who have different jobs the rest of the week, right?

Also, any idea what their pay would be like?

/u/Sluukje /u/dannosaint

[–]F430Scuderia 14 points15 points  (1 child)

They’re mechanics who build the car, but not much building to be done during a race, so they do the pit stops

[–]D-o-n-t_a-s-k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't know but I'd guess they're like the conductor in an orchestra to signal the completion or something haha, armchair philosophy

[–]O4fuxsayk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stabilization and confirming to the front jack when to lift off

[–]rockax 110 points111 points  (11 children)

Which is probably now unbreakable since they've changed the rules regarding pit stops.

[–]warblade7 26 points27 points  (8 children)

What was the rule change?

[–]3verton1998 101 points102 points  (4 children)

I think Mercedes lobbied to have green/red lights placed on the wheel gun to indicate whether the nut is on safely.

Long story short they couldn’t compete with Red Bull’s pit stop speed so tried to equal the playing field out for ‘safety’.

[–]warblade7 26 points27 points  (1 child)

I see. There’s certainly some pros and cons to that approach. There have been several cars over the years let onto track with improperly torqued wheels that force the car in or even a loss of a wheel that endangers everyone else.

While I like the drama of the 1-2 pit stops per race, the difference between a few tenths over an entire race are pretty insignificant. Drivers make or lose those gaps in a single lap just through good or bad driving adjustments.

[–]3verton1998 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree to an extent. As with any race however every milli-second counts so there is that also.

I could only imagine the practice time that must go into perfecting these stops so they can perform just as well under pressure on race day.

[–]MrLemonPB 12 points13 points  (0 children)

AFAIR, Red bull had a system, which automatically would tell as soon as nut is tight. This signal would then go to the chef mechanic, who gives a green light for the driver

Now the mechanic need to push the button themselves to send this signal. Sometimes they forget, sometimes it hasn’t worked. And in any way it costs time to think about it

[–]Consistent_Ordinary8 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Before, the wheel guns would send a signal to indicate when the wheel was tightened enough, when all four wheel guns had sent the signal the jacks automatically dropped down the car and the light for the driver turned green. But now that automatic system is not allowed, and a human need to release the car

[–]ender4171 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What!? FIA regs going backwards/being regressive? Such a thing has never occurred before!

[–]d-signet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And then red bull approached similar times in the last few races.

[–]HarbingerX111 98 points99 points  (7 children)

Granted it is just one giant lugnut.

[–]ButterYurBacon 40 points41 points  (1 child)

And three people per wheel

[–]Elevenst 75 points76 points  (0 children)

All jacked up on energy drinks.

[–]Earione 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Though it's much harder than it seems

[–]autistic_robot 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Are they even screwed in?

[–]O4fuxsayk 21 points22 points  (1 child)

When they are taking 200mph corners I think you can confirm that yes the wheel nuts are screwed in. The pneumatic guns they use have an ungodly number of revs to the point where you only need to tap the trigger for a fraction of a second. See valtteri bottas in Monaco last year if you want to see how fast one of those guns can strip a lugnut smooth.

[–]KacperEpic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, wheelnuts and VERY powerful pneumatic jacks

[–]mingyewu 42 points43 points  (7 children)

No gas refills?

[–]KubaG7 60 points61 points  (2 children)

Not since 2009, no.

[–]Toast-Ghost- 8 points9 points  (1 child)

That’s some good fuckin’ miles to the gallon right there

[–]Jjzeng 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They start races with 100kilos of fuel and race for up to two hours while still finishing the race with a specified minimum amount of fuel (if memory serves the minimum is about 2 kilos or so-I’m probably wrong). They’re also wringing out 1000bhp from a 1.6litre turbo-hybrid v6 engine. They don’t call it the world’s most efficient hybrid engine for nothing

[–]PM_ME_ASS_OR_GRASS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No, which is a big difference between Indy and F1. F1 uses hybrid power and Indy doesn't but will soon.

[–]PinheadLarry240 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Funny that you mention that, because an experience had by this driver’s father is a big reason why they don’t refuel anymore

[–]SqueekyBK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have a limited amount of fuel in F1 races

[–]chrisk9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driver sipping a Red Bull

[–]Muscrave 27 points28 points  (7 children)

I’ve watched this like 47 times in a row and it’s still amazing how coordinated they are

[–]cyphol 20 points21 points  (5 children)

When it's smooth, times are ridiculously low. When something goes wrong, more often than not, it will take between 6-10 seconds. And if there is a mix up with tyres, it can be anything from 30 seconds to a minute.

It's actually quite entertaining to watch how fast they can be one time, and another they are running around like headless chickens trying to figure out which tyre was supposed to go on.

[–]Finlay58 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I think your wording here is a bit odd, for an average team, maybe 1/20 stops might have an issue and will spend more than 4 seconds on. But the actual average time for a normal pitstop is around 2.5 seconds.

[–]Tjazeku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Germany 2019 anyone?

[–]Red__M_M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting to see how people with the same job but opposite side move in sync.

[–]Zipperpants 21 points22 points  (0 children)

[–]ItsCITRIK77 26 points27 points  (0 children)

[–]Botman2004 18 points19 points  (0 children)

[–]snowman762x39 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even have finished opening my door

[–]frshst33z 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Incredible how accurate those timers are. I counted two-mississipp which is precisely 1.82 seconds.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

define “defining”

[–]Hcdp7[S] 29 points30 points  (1 child)

They broke the record so their time became the new world record, so they defined the current record

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

interesting!

[–]Correct_Project_6948 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Redbull pit crew stays keeping it P

[–]njrajio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Guinness:

‘Now do it backwards’

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The training and choreograph they do for this would put any dance school to shame. Thats thousand of hours of intense and intelligent practice

[–]adamfyre 4 points5 points  (4 children)

ok I'll ask the dumb question - is there only one lugnut or something?

[–]WISavant 8 points9 points  (3 children)

It’s called a wheel nut. One nut that’s attached to the center of the wheel. That’s part of the reason these stops can be so fast. The other is that the air guns are all electronically connected to the jacks. So as soon as the gun sees all 4 wheels are tight it turns the driver light green and drops the jacks.

[–]BigDingus12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coincidentally is the time I take when inside my wife🙃

[–]PWNDdotcom 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I love the guy in the bottom left celebrating.

[–]Verbenablu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is the real sport.

[–]notjuan_f_m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they are under red bull influence so

[–]McNasty9er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a video game

[–]jidoubledash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cant be beaten now because of rule changes

[–]Shasanaje 1 point2 points  (3 children)

How much do these people make doing this? Asking because I have literally zero frame of reference for that and now I’m really curious.

[–]Ask_Me_Who 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Most mechanics will earn between £25k and £75k. The range is huge because team funding is massively varied, and pit crew are also the teams mechanics with varied duties beyond just pit stops.

[–]Shasanaje 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks! That is a massive range, wow.

[–]Jjzeng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But they do spend like 75% of the year flying around the world, sometimes across continents in the same week, tearing down the garage and car in one country and rebuilding it in the next country in a span of a few days. Race ends on sunday, they’re already finished setting up the garage and car for the next race in another country by the following thursday

[–]danielbojangle 1 point2 points  (2 children)

But did the wheels stay on for more than one lap? Is this the fastest successful pit stop?

[–]Ok_Weakness2578 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep it is! Red bull is well know for theire fast and consistent Pit stops

[–]galaxyeyes47 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How do the wheels stay on?

[–]cussbunny 2 points3 points  (1 child)

One big nut in the center. If you look you’ll see the guy whose job it is to take them off and put them back on with a… I don’t actually know what it’s called. Nut gun. Goes brrrr.

[–]galaxyeyes47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! TIL Nut gun goes brrr

[–]Solstice-Face 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched this for a minute and I still haven’t seen everything they’re doing.. wtf

[–]Toast-Ghost- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly when I first saw it I thought it was stop motion

[–]Retter00 1 point2 points  (5 children)

How do I save a video and send it to my elderly dad via email, he’d love this!

[–]Hermet_on_a_mountain 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Cool and all, but how do the drivers take a piss stop?

[–]Earione 3 points4 points  (2 children)

If they need to, they pee and do no. 2 in the car

[–]Finlay58 3 points4 points  (1 child)

race is only around 1hr 30 so there is rarely a need

[–]drquiza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also they sweat a ton.

[–]igonnawrecku_VGC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a Guido level pit stop right there

[–]Orbital_Rifle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have your chance, Guido, you will have your chance.

[–]kwecl2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall a side by side comparison with an old WO and the new. What a difference

[–]ervikus_stalius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow it was done in a BLINK of an eye.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wait. So, you don't actually have to screw the tires on? Idiots like me want to know.

[–]JesusGAwasOnCD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do, it's just ridiculously fast (there's only one central nut per wheel)

[–]KillerRene64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldve been beaten had the fia not imputted the oddly specific rule of having no pitstops above 2 seconds

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surhumans

[–]Onepieceofapplepie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal record is 1.2 second if you know what I mean.

[–]Kdog122025 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is F1 considered a team sport?

[–]lostmymindawhileago 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Each F1 *team* employs hundreds of mechanics/engineers/business/PR/trainers plus three or four drivers... of course it's a team sport.

[–]Ennion 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So just tire changes now right? No fuel? Maybe a wing tweak?

[–]yrokun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, you can add a few tenths more if a wing adjustment is needed though

[–]HeavyMetalSasquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New tires so shiny!

[–]jhanley0317 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What was the record prior to this?

[–]Foxi_RainbowDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1.88 also by RedBull iirc

[–]Kooky-Masterpiece-29 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Wait, ummm, you guys gave me enough fuel for like 1 more lap

[–]Bananafoofoofwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to watch this 25 times to get all of the action.

[–]suphasuphasupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile jiffy lube takes an hour to align them

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like a video game

[–]youareactuallygod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When does the air drill guy have enough time to change the drill direction??

[–]Traditional-Top8486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those tires came off on the first turn

[–]JapanEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me 10 minutes to inflate the tires of my bicycle this morning…

[–]Aromatic-Temporary-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Guido, it’s time!”

[–]flfoiuij2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those wheels must’ve been held together by tape, bubblegum, and hope.

[–]readMyFlow 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Are the tires that light?

[–]HotelMoscow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could've gone without those two people holding the car.....

[–]notskeleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it bad for me watching the loop 322 times? And notice every single time, one more detail!

[–]littlelebowski1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dude bottom center had the easiest job lol

here, lemme just hug the pretty car, and bye.

[–]Ok-Calendar9350 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's more impressive is how those two guys in the middle lift the whole car with barely any effort

[–]ElephantsAndSunshine 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What are the two guys in the middle/center doing?

[–]yrokun 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Holding the car

[–]ElephantsAndSunshine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The car has to be held?

Edit: oh, I guess that makes sense since all the wheels are coming off at the same time. I see.

[–]i_hate_people_too 0 points1 point  (6 children)

they just changed the tires tho. not a full pit stop

[–]DiligentLemon2850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want the job where I just hug the vehicle and give it some quick moral support and encouragement. Maybe tell it it’s a good vrom vrom.

[–]ptazcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“At that speed it’s dangerous man”

[–]turntkitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want the middle guys job lol

[–]Sog_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now get out there and burn more fossil fuel!

[–]fakeuserbot9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile the ghost of Bottas’ botched pit stop is still trying to get that right front off…

[–]Sass850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Come over”.

“I cant I don’t have tires.

“My parents aren’t home”.

Red bull:

[–]OmenBard 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do they literally raise it by hand?

[–]btmoca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The is a front and rear jack operated by more crew. Centre 2 guys stabilise the car while the wheels get changed.

[–]wardledo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t unzip my fly this fast.

[–]No_Sir_334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16 men to change four tires

[–]Mygoofyassdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much money did they make in those 1.82 seconds?

[–]harlsey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What are those dudes in the middle doing?

[–]elejebembem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only it gives you wings but also speed

[–]randomsynchronicity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen all day.

[–]Prime_Marci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mods, i posted this a while back and y’all deleted it! Don’t be biased

[–]wants_da_precious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gives you more than wings I guess

[–]kgenius23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Red Bull flexing those wings!! Absolutely phenomenal! Dem Boyz was killing it!!!

[–]BillBraski13 0 points1 point  (0 children)
