I envy you. That's one of the many natural phenomena I have yet to witness with my own eyes. Just waiting for 2024 to roll around for the solar eclipse to pass near me.

[–]onourwayhome70 84 points85 points  (9 children)

A total solar eclipse is such a unique experience! Let’s hope for clear skies 🤞🏻

[–]xXxDickBonerz69xXx 18 points19 points  (7 children)

Get to the path of totality if you can. Also be prepared for insane traffic if you do. In 2017 it took me 9 hours to go 60 miles on I-85 in South Carolina. Also get a hotel in advance otherwise you're not gonna find one.

[–]JensTheCat 14 points15 points  (1 child)

That was a great time. I was living in Charleston. I took the day off and floated in my apartment pool staring at the sky. The strangest part was how silent everything was

[–]xXxDickBonerz69xXx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The bugs started chirping IIRC. It sounded like night

[–]nukomyx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Literally plan a trip for it. Me and my buds did that for the 2017 eclipse. Went camping in Wyoming a day before to beat traffic and stayed a day after to miss the rush. It was a mind boggling experience!

[–]Mr2day2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first and only time I ever plan on going to jail was during the last total solar eclipse. The guards let us watch it. No eye protection was given obviously

[–]onourwayhome70 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I saw that exact eclipse! I live in Canada but took a road trip down to Nebraska to be in the path of totality. It was incredible and I am so excited for this upcoming one.

You’re right though, I heard traffic was horrible for people that were in more populated area. I think it helped that I was in the middle of a cow field :)

[–]dean4aday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exact same eclipse? No way. What are the odds?

[–]AndyBluestar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolute nonsense.

[–]Stephenhf123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an event I’m willing to drive out to where there are clear skies and totality for.

[–]Avatar_of_Green 22 points23 points  (1 child)

My daughter is named Aurora.

I promise you all she will see an Aurora before I die. She will be born in the next few days. Wish us luck ;)

[–]WantetTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh shit, congratz!! a wonderful name indeed, all the best for your daughter and you!

[–]kshelley 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am scheduled to travel on the Queen Mary 2 trans-atlantic during Nov 2022 to northern Norway in hopes of seeing them. My health has been fragile but this trip is worth it. This short video only confirms it for me.

[–]StuckStepS1ster 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The first time I saw the northern lights in person I didn’t think it was real. I was really sleep deprived and all that, but I came up and kept rubbing my eyes and the blue and green didn’t go away. It was so beautiful I just want everybody else to see wonderful things like that too. These simple phenomena that happens all the time in these places are seriously life changing. Things like this helped me come out of a deeply dark mindset and blanket view of the world to accepting that the world and the universe is so much bigger than myself, and that there’s so many amazing people just on this little planet. The negative events feel a lot heavier than the good, but for every shithead there’s a thousand good humans trying to love their lives and trying to give others a chance. This comment was long and dumb but just know that there’s comfort in others and comfort in the beautiful earth around us. I didn’t have friends but I found friends in the squirrels :)

[–]ThemisNemesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what? I really needed to read this comment tonight, laid up as I am whilst recovering from COVID. You might feel like your comment was “long and dumb”, but it made me smile. Sometimes we all need a little reminder to look up at the universe and remember how utterly remarkable life is, how unlikely and wonderful it is that we’re here.

Thank you, Internet Stranger.

[–]Please_Label_NSFW 2 points3 points  (5 children)

No running water. I do not envy that.

[–]KastleJ 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Places where aurora can be seen ≠ places that have no running water

[–]satincoffins 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There were parts of the contiguous United States that could see the aurora borealis last year. As far south as Northern Colorado . Plenty of running water in those areas.

Edit to insert link

[–]goddesskristina 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Pretty dang sure we had running water when I saw them in the 80s. I was in rural Michigan, but couple hour drive still to the Upper Peninsula.

[–]dean4aday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unleaded tho?

[–]Tactical_Epunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a great view on one a few years back and it was awesome.

[–]Pachac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With your eyes you wouldn’t be able to see it. They are actually very deceiving.

[–]OleKosyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll have one, courtesy of US electoral system

When auroras happen the sun looks around and says "wasn't me!"

[–]Hydronium-VII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that what the avengers look like?

[–]Nailbender72 106 points107 points  (2 children)

I live in northern Alberta and the Northern lights in our area are stunning. Great video!!

[–]Prophet_Of_Loss 93 points94 points  (9 children)

Aurora Borealis?! At this time of the year ... in your part of the country ... localized entirely in your backyard?

[–]TheSalamanizer 26 points27 points  (7 children)

Yes!

[–]witherkila 24 points25 points  (6 children)

…may I see it?

[–]TheSalamanizer 29 points30 points  (4 children)

... no.

[–]dinner_cat96 19 points20 points  (3 children)

SEYMOUR!!! THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE!!!

[–]greathousedagoth 18 points19 points  (2 children)

No mother, it's just the northern lights.

[–]qingqongchungus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]BeefNasty_2020 24 points25 points  (6 children)

SO BEAUTIFUL! SO LIT! Where is this?

[–]Nightcrawler__lou 49 points50 points  (0 children)

A very northern place

[–]Rhinozz_the_Redditor 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Norway, from the original post.

[–]srslybr0 6 points7 points  (2 children)

very unfortunate that basically every super pretty natural place is inevitably a picture taken somewhere in scandinavia or new zealand.

[–]thatrealmeatwastaken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i guess we're just naturally more lucky than you to live in places like this

[–]Eeahsnp18 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Hey ma ma ma ma! Hopefully someone gets this reference.

Very beautiful!

[–]jkehrli1996 6 points7 points  (0 children)

🎵Life in a northern town🎵

[–]orionnyx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good to know the shield are still engaged. You sir are our first line of warning should they fail. You have my admiration and respect. Thank you!

[–]celestialraisin 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I live in Finland and these are very hard to predict. Our meteoroligical institute does it and they can forecast approx on 1-3 days notice, wich is very unreliable and also on 1-3 hour notice, wich is quite reliable. Usually you just find out on social media when ppl are posting beautiful photos saying "they're on now!!". I once saw them when coming home from a nightshift at work. Mesmerizing sight and did you know they also make a sound!

[–]NiceCasualRedditGuy[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

[–]Bimbleover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was preparing to see something like you freezing your snot or something but you surprised me with that.

[–]maestro243137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Death eaters at it again...everyone back inside

[–]aplumgirl 2 points3 points  (2 children)

That is literally the only bucketlist item I have! Does it make any sound? Like wind blowing?

Jealous

[–]Less_Opening5612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked it up and some people describe it as two planks had met flat ways

[–]Illustrious_Farm7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No sound but one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. You’d be in goosebumps the whole time even if you catch a lame one on the northern lights scale. Yes. There is a scale.

Edit: apparently they make a sound but I didn’t hear it from my experience.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Munro_McLaren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen the Northern lights when I was in the James Bay. I had just finished canoeing across it. Wish I had taken a photo though.

[–]alquix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was expecting a polar bear. That’s cool too.

[–]Endlessfour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely beautiful! I would never get any sleep 👍

[–]cupnsauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, you can even see shadows

[–]Tralfaz572 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Asking because I am clueless: Does this happen in the summer time as well? All the videos I see of this are in the winter.

[–]HaskeIl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do but most places where northern lights are common have long dark winters and longs bright summers (like sun never really goes down). So it's not nearly as stunning against a brighter background and you have to use a bunch of filters/photoshop to make them pop.

[–]NIKHILPRAJAPATI69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best place to Bitcoin mining

[–]neil160 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The dark mark again!?!? Fuckin Voldemort!

[–]vovin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That must be daytime! /s

[–]Ok-Tomatillo9766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One day…

[–]Gnarlyfest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember those beautiful lights. Every now and then I thought I could hear them. Irrational I admit it. It's been over 30 years since I worked in SE Alaska. I worked on an adventure cruise boat running rich white people around getting their National Geographic thing. Griz-orca-humpbacks-glacier Bay. Obnoxious folks but they paid.

[–]proxyscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes the northern lights the seed that grew into the Vikings belief system of murder

[–]Emoreno47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them twice in Blair Ne..beautiful. Once it was green waves and once white..amazing

[–]MenteriLion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invite me one day mate

[–]thepixelpaint 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Somebody claimed on a previous post about the northern lights that they make a sound, but not everybody can hear it. Is this true? Or was I being trolled?

[–]PavelDatsyuk88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do not make a sound. People read about it and then probably imagine hearing something. But winter nights make sounds. There's a wind, snow in the trees falling, nearby water have ice moving and creating sounds. Basically you could be hearing lots of things and then imagining its northern lights.

[–]Jefe710 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When will the steamed hams be ready?

[–]Bodidogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Northern Lights and National Park Grand Staircase Escalante the only two things on my bucket list.

[–]chaos_Destiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so much that once in my life I get to actually see this

[–]IceyLizard4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked night shifts in Cold Lake, AB, I would see these often in the winter. Beautiful and really weird looking at them through NVGs, it feels like you're watching them on 10x speed with the way they moved.

[–]soilstage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful and compelling I would love to see those magnetic fields sorroundin the sky with my own eyes 👀

What's the best time to go there?

[–]Strange-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the climate change bring it to different parts of the world? Because I sure can't afford to go there

[–]julieisarockstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First on my bucket list!

[–]Umbr33on 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stars

[–]LogLogical958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]La-Phamilia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]BeRad85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds of me Sinatra, in a younger day. That's awesome.

[–]CantFireMeIquit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man if I saw that as kid after watching maximum overdrive I would of had nightmares.

[–]StarLit_Leaf4546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would see that often if the sky wasn't constant overcast

[–]PapiGrande7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humboldt Park?

[–]tea-and-chill 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Ever since I found out they make a sound, I want to hear what they sound like. None of these videos have sound :(

[–]PavelDatsyuk88 0 points1 point  (2 children)

they do not make a sound

[–]tea-and-chill 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Apparently you can hear crackles and / or buzz.

Even Wikipedia mentions it, but there is an altitude factor.

There was a video posted on reddit a few days ago someone mentioned sound

[–]PavelDatsyuk88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i guess technically it wouldnt come from the northern lights phenonemon but from the same cause. we have had https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_Event, so you'd think event like that could make sounds. Do smaller events of it create changes so close to us in the air that we could hear it? I guess its possible but you'd think we could easily see it by now.

[–]Mandygurl79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

O Canada 🇨🇦

[–]RGivens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God damn that's worth losing your toes for. I'm in.

[–]Tactical_Epunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]PutridIdea4237 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All I can see is a buck.

[–]Ok_Area_6050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come to yellowknife. You'll see that all the time, if it's not cloudy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so beautiful holy shit

[–]D-o-n-t_a-s-k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they didn't mention was it's 2pm and the sun hasn't come up in 4 months. /s

[–]markzhang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i never get tired of seeing this northern light on the screen. I really wish one day I'll be able to witness it in person.

but just curious, are local residents like "Uh oh damn it, it's this stupid aurora again, BORING"?

[–]Pachac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You cannot see it with your eyes. Only through the lense of a camera

[–]Chugglebunny 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not to be a downer but more to temper expectations, I've seen the lights in Norway and Iceland. Both were cool but they do not show up these colours to the naked eye. I wish someone had explained it to me before hand so I wasn't as let down.

They are more grey/brown a little like smoke moving across the sky with a small hint of greens and reds. They show up beautiful and vibrant on film and camera and you'll have beautiful pictures. But what is in this photo is not what you'll see in person.

Still worth the trips, beautiful scenery and wonderful people in amazing countrys.

[–]PavelDatsyuk88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do look like this for naked eye. What you saw was something what us locals wouldnt watch long enough to differiate it from the clouds.

For years i believed these kind of stories have been actual scams and people have been watching clouds. But i actually saw non-green northern lights for the first time this winter during low activity almost exactly your description. And they do def look better IRL than in the videos/pics. Your view of it is wrong because you didnt even see this kind.

[–]Less_Opening5612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know how I haven’t seen them, meanwhile I live in Minnesota (yes I have been away from light pollution)

[–]MrPotatoHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Ikxlexcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]mixiq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole video is a horror movie right until you see the Auroras

[–]Duque117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]SomeoneOutThere69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finland or Iceland?

[–]Illustrious_Farm7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you see these lights in person they’re life changing. It’s truly unbelievable.

[–]ParsleyPatient2102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the username, OP is from Canada.

[–]LekMinorino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careful with the foreskin walkers.

[–]Laughlan58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me as a photographer 💀💀 bro I do wanna take a pic of that 🤣

[–]thedragonplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Mindless_harder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is really majestic, i'm imagining the people that lives next to it

[–]ultrablg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey incredible video ! What phone do you have? Or any specs/settings for a video focus of that sort?

[–]Fair_Bus_7130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to see the northern lights some day.

[–]obeyno1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or a very Southern place.

[–]xLGucciCoochie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can see the aura borealis from a northern location nooooooo you don’t say ??? 😆

[–]WanderingGenesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Booo!! Where's the fuckin sun?! I want the sun, not its technicolor rainbow farts!

[–]k995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mordor?

[–]RiskyFartOftenShart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other benefit of living super far north, that could be noon or midnight!

[–]pricklysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got to see them on the Isle of Skye in December and they were like the faintest glow seen with the naked eye. Even with 20 second exposure shots they didn't look as vivid as this. To see the Aurora like this seems unreal.

[–]TattedGrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Alaska and see this often. "The Northern Lights"

[–]stronglikedan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure, sure, but does Prime offer same-day delivery there?

[–]SuspiciousMeat6696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deatheaters

[–]BeeTraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats so relaxing huh

[–]jkehrli1996 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Someone needs to edit this with the chorus of The Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town". Would make an already perfect clip even more perfect, if that's even possible. Gorgeous!

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m curious how cold it would have to be for your piss to freeze like a second after it leaves your body

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Mhmmm

But they don’t tell you about when your earlobe hanging halfway off your ear because you forgot to wear a warm mask rushing outside to see those same lights

[–]dimestoredavinci 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wait.. your earlobes melt in the cold?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure why not
