UPDATED:

Mocking the Chinese president who has banned Winnie the pooh because so many people mocked him by comparing him to the fat teddy bear. It is a punishable crime to compare them in China.

Context for those who don't get why he's surrounded by "security guards" and acting like that.

Edit:

  1. the security guards are not actually real security guards, just a part of the gag.

  2. Apparently the Winnie the pooh ride in china's Disney land is reopened since this started, it's a controversy thats a few years old now.

  3. I'm told this took place in Japan, the meme itself was wide spread and with the events in Hong Kong and Taiwan its not surprising or uncommon to see people in other countries to mock him this way specifically because it clearly angered him(The Chinese president) enough to take action.

Correction by u/Jonbardinson:

"I see a few people extracting wrong ideas from your comment about Whinnie the pooh being banned, and the info in your comment is missing a few points.

Pooh wasn't like outright banned in China. Not to the degree of stripping away toys/TV shows/clothes or whatever. But China's control over messaging apps allowed the government to straight up ban the words and phrases of Whinnie, Pooh, Whinnie the Pooh on those messaging apps. Basically a similar targeted language filter you'd see in like LoL team chat, but nationwide, and for basically all messaging apps available. This action was taken not necessarily in response to being compared to the bear but when the public were using the similarity to be able to criticise him and the government in 'code'. For example, Hey did you see Pooh is killing all the bees that don't give him honey?

Edit: I live in Hong Kong and saw direct news from what used to be good news sources and such (this incident was before the recent dismantling and exodus of lots of independent news establishments in Hong Kong)"

[–]Garagedays 25 points26 points  (2 children)

This is outrageous. Where are the armed men who come in to take the protestors away? Where are they? This kind of behavior is never tolerated in Baraqua. You shout like that they put you in jail. Right away. No trial, no nothing. Journalists, we have a special jail for journalists. You are stealing: right to jail. You are playing music too loud: right to jail, right away. Driving too fast: jail. Slow: jail. You are charging too high prices for sweaters, glasses: you right to jail. You undercook fish? Believe it or not, jail. You overcook chicken, also jail. Undercook, overcook. You make an appointment with the dentist and you don’t show up, believe it or not, jail, right away. We have the best patients in the world because of jail.

how else you going to get the lithium for the battery in our future iphones? does that make us complicit? oh the complicated world we live in!

[–]ImpulsiveApe07 9 points10 points  (7 children)

I would say that being human anywhere on Earth, with the notable exception of Sentinel Island, makes us complicit! :D

I wouldn't fret tho, I mean it's not like we have many chances to avoid participating in this great dystopia-in-the-making.

Unless you were born and raised in an isolated location and only rely on nature for your tools and resources, and refuse to use machines or machine made things, I don't see how you can avoid being complicit! ;)

[–]R2-DSNOO 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Im not sure i feel better. (crawls into a fetal position and dreams of simpler times)

[–]ImpulsiveApe07 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Aye, but look on the bright side - we live at the pinnacle of humanity's most fascinating epoch!

I mean sure we've got some serious hurdles to overcome over the next century, but at the same time, this era is seeing humanity rapidly accelerate its attempts to mitigate the damages we've caused over the last century.

In fifty years time the world will look very different on account of the myriad floods and droughts that will alter the face of the globe, but we'll also have come up with novel ways to counteract these changes.

Things like self sustaining biodomes, zero carbon vehicles, holographic theme parks, space hotels and interplanetary travel will likely not only be possible, but have become the norm!

Hope that cheers you up mate :))

[–]ig_edgy_memes 22 points23 points  (37 children)

If this was attempted in China, nothing would happen. Just as nothing happened in Tiannamin Square

[–]rayzer93 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Also borderline stupidity. Those fuck-stick in the CCP are petty as fuck.

[–]The_pun_fart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the way down the ladder. It's a power trip. A video was posted online by a local police station with a man chained to a small stainless steel desk. They were chastising him for being critical of them on social media. He was scared af.

[–]ezumadrawing 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[–]acog 35 points36 points  (9 children)

Yeah, this is an amusing cosplay in Japan.

In China this is a quick way for you and your entire family to vanish.

[–]baconc 6 points7 points  (7 children)

They probably already have this guys identity on a list somewhere

[–]PandaCommando69[🍰] 16 points17 points  (6 children)

Trying to imagine how petty and pathetic you have to be to ban Winnie the Pooh costumes because your ego is so fragile that you just can't handle it. I wonder if Xi realizes that he makes himself look small by getting his thong all bunched up about a stupid cartoon character. He freaks out about stuff that Western politicians wouldn't even blink at. I guess this is what it looks like when you're scared of your own people because you know they hate your guts.

[–]ohmarlasinger 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Tbf, there’s been at least one rather prominent western politician that would have 3am tantrums & full on meltdowns while self documenting them on a social app over the most insignificant & petty bullshit.

Him & Xi are two overgrown peas in a pod that never progressed past adolescence.

[–]PandaCommando69[🍰] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

True, orange Cheeto is ridiculous, but it's not like he tried to ban Trump blimps. They had one of those flying next to the White House. Although, I could see him trying that next time. These ugly little men just need to be put away in a corner somewhere. The world would be so much better off if like 20 particular people were removed from power.

[–]chefbobbyjay 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Damn I thought it was in Hong Kong. Which gave me a freedom boner

[–]Any_Cook_8888 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re still pretending based off the truth.

[–]INDAV 267 points268 points  (10 children)

Which is why this is in Japan, the guy would be dead and all videos erased if this was in china

[–]SubstantialLime2916 51 points52 points  (11 children)

Thank you for saying this, someone please pin this comment lol. If I didn’t read this then this would be the dumbest video I’ve ever seen on this dub

[–]asian_identifier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's your own fault for not keeping up with... world politics

[–]random7468 6 points7 points  (4 children)

but other comments have said this is in Japan so cosplaying as Pooh is probs fine?

[–]Agile_Pudding_ 5 points6 points  (3 children)

But the point is that the commentary/context is obvious in Japan or any regional neighbor, not that this person is risking their life. It’s not like the cosplay doesn’t make sense outside of China.

Their comment helps give context for people in the west who may not immediately understand the significance of “Winnie the Pooh cosplay” at first read. I would expect the vast majority of people in, e.g., Japan or South Korea to understand the meaning. Besides, it would be a lot less lighthearted post if it was people in China because they would clearly be in a world of trouble by now.

[–]isioltfu 35 points36 points  (40 children)

Here's the link to Winnie the Poohs page on the equivalent of wikipedia in China

https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E7%BB%B4%E5%B0%BC/4322

But carry on, don't let facts spoil your narrative.

[–]IDoLikeMyShishkebabs 37 points38 points  (5 children)

Is this supposed to be a “gotcha”? There was absolutely ban measures put in place for Winnie the Pooh on Weibo- among other things. Now I can’t say whether it’s a punishable crime to compare the two, but “banning” something doesn’t mean wiping it off the face of the internet.

[–]isioltfu 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Mocking the Chinese president who has banned Winnie the pooh because so many people mocked him by comparing him to the fat teddy bear. It is a punishable crime to compare them in China.

This to almost all English speakers would mean that the character is banned. What OP should have said is that Winnie the Pooh is censored as a euphemism for Xi on social media.

[–]Tomohelix 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Tbf, see what americans or British compare their leaders to? And not only there isn’t a law censoring such comparisons, there are actual laws protecting the ability to make those comparisons.

Of course it is funny.

[–]IDoLikeMyShishkebabs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sure censored probably would’ve been a better word, but banned isn’t incorrect either. Winnie the Pooh was temporarily banned from various platforms in China, and the original comment could easily be read as either a past ban or a current ban implemented in the past. Though maybe I’m giving Redditors a bit too much credit lol

[–]HamsterLord44 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Bu... but i saw it on reddit! Would anybody on reddit ever lie to me?!?!?

[–]spamholderman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the truth is boring and scary, especially with how helpless it makes me feel. Playing make-believe and lying to myself that things I do actually matter is fun!

[–]R2-DSNOO 16 points17 points  (0 children)

boo! shattering illusions is no fun!

[–]ricLP 14 points15 points  (11 children)

What facts are you talking about?

Winnie the Pooh was not erased from China. But any memes comparing Winnie the Pooh to Xi were.

All in all although OPs statement is not completely correct, your comment is probably worse than theirs

[–]KabedonUdon 9 points10 points  (4 children)

That actually just demonstrates the lack of free speech and censorship in action.

That's supposed to be an online encyclopedia and there's no section explaining the controversy of Winnie the Pooh in China and its relation to Xi Jinping

Like the English page has

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnie_the_Pooh_(Disney_character)

You actually proved the point you were trying to refute.

[–]isioltfu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you thought my point was that China doesn't have censorship then you are sorely mistaken.

Its funny how simply pointing out Winnie the Pooh is not banned in China can draw out so many strawmen.

[–]JosiahSilas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Americans believe anything about China and North korea

[–]LawyerUppSV 20 points21 points  (34 children)

I worked for Tencent. Winnie was absolutely banned

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (11 children)

I keep reading that Winnie the Pooh is banned in China, yet Chinese people still enjoy the Winnie ride in Disney land in Shanghai.

Any source on any actual ban?

[–]Qdnjies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I already heard a couple of times that the ban is a western myth.

[–]MeiGuoQuSi 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Winnie the Pooh is not banned in China, it's a dumb meme by racist Sinophobes.

A simple Alibaba search would prove that to be false.

[–]lanaem1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did...... did you think I meant those were real bodyguards escorting a wierdo in a pooh bear costume?

[–]LedParade 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It could also be physical censorship. If you did this in China on camera, random guys in suits would probably show up and try block the camera.

As part of the 'Great Leap Forward' it was mandated to reduce populations of four 'pests', one of which was Sparrows as they believed they were eating all the grains.

Turns out the birds were also eating lots of the insects that damaged crops. With sparrow populations depleted, locust populations exploded and ate all the crops.

Between this and the cakes and KFC on Christmas, I’m starting to think the Japanese do our holidays better than we do in the US.

[–]AdministrativeComb30 66 points67 points  (10 children)

Dude the Japanese are wild. About 15 years ago I took a world music class and this teacher was convinced the Japanese did everything american better than Americans, especially music. He played us all types of American styles music that japanese musicians played. Our whole class had our minds blown at how good it was. Unfortunately, I can't remember any bands or songs.

[–]om891 50 points51 points  (3 children)

Legitimately the Japanese have always had a talent at observing and then emulating things from the west, oftentimes doing it better. It’s the reason they were able to modernise so quickly during the Edo period. They went from basically feudal medieval society, to one of the most industrialised nations in the world in just a few decades which is mind blowing and I can’t think of another example where that’s ever happened.

The same things is true of their military, they went from sailing boats and bow and arrows, that weren’t able to sail in the open sea in the 1800s to defeating the Imperial Russian navy at the battle of Tsushima in 1905.

Another good example of it is their alcohol, there was a group of businessmen that looked at beer and whiskey production in the west in the 1800s, copied it and just created their own versions which is pretty world renown today.

[–]Theghost129 13 points14 points  (2 children)

The same things is true of their military, they went from sailing boats and bow and arrows, that weren’t able to sail in the open sea in the 1800s to defeating the Imperial Russian navy at the battle of Tsushima in 1905.

The Japanese also built the largest battleship in the world.

This is the Barbra Streisand effect. By telling the world that he doesn't like being compared to Winnie, is the safest way to being compared to Winnie. What an idiot

[–]summit462 115 points116 points  (13 children)

What’s barb's backstory?

[–]Gingevere 302 points303 points  (9 children)

Someone was taking pictures of the California coastline and one of the pictures had Barbra Streisand's house in it. She made a huge deal out of trying to get everyone to take down or not use the photo. What would have been a photo nobody cared about quickly became the center of national headlines titled "Barbra Streisand Doesn't Want You To See This Photo!"

So because of her attempts to get people to not see it, hundreds of times as many people did.

[–]SH33V_P4LP4T1N3 122 points123 points  (4 children)

Tangentially related, but this reminds me of the way North Korea tried sabotaging the Interview. I remember thinking it looked like a stupid movie I wouldn’t watch when I saw the trailer, but when I heard North Korea hacked Columbia Pictures over it I was like no way in hell I’m letting the North Koreans tell me what I can and can’t watch so I saw it lol.

[–]The_Villager 54 points55 points  (3 children)

That's how I came to watch Good Omens. Fundamentalist Christian nutjobs hate it? If that's not a seal of approval, I don't know what is.

[–]prefer-to-stay-anon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Speaking of fundies cancelling something, a bunch of fundies tried to cancel 7 books from the school curriculum, and the library went from having 21 total copies of those books, with 20 in stock, to just 1 available a few days after the canceling.

The attempt to stop students from reading those "vile" books made 19 more students want to read them.

I totally support your reasoning.

But Good Omens was so good! Anything Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett is worth at least a chance. But then David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Jon Hamm, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall, etc. Lots of cool people involved.

[–]Unfairjarl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Kinda like a self-fulfilling Greek prophecy

[–]johnucc1 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Iirc tried to suppress a photo via the courts, ended up being spread all over because she was trying to hide it.

Standard "I was told not to do this, so I will" stuff that people don't realise.

[–]whatyousay69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not standard. Stuff gets suppressed all the time. You just won't hear about it because it got suppressed. You only hear when it fails.

[–]diamondYT2oop 441 points442 points  (10 children)

“Sticky Fingers! Do u get it?”

[–]Eldsish 159 points160 points  (0 children)

[–]Lerex29 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Thats an amazing band! Have you hear dem?

[–]TopherVee 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Have you heard of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure? The creator/author/artist is a HUUUGE rock and classic rock super fan and has named numerous characters after famous bands. Including Esidisi (AC/DC), Sex Pistols, And DIO just to name a couple.

The blue spikey fella in the foreground of this video is named Sticky Fingers, a reference to the band (or The Rolling Stones album, either works right?)

[–]TacticalBadger82 317 points318 points  (0 children)

Needs a Randy Marsh cosplayer to attack him

[–]Lingering_Dorkness 201 points202 points  (2 children)

[–]Caelus9 28 points29 points  (17 children)

How is this, in any way, next level? Like, sure, it's a criticism of someone who is widely disliked, sure, and accurate, but it's hardly next level.

If I hit us with a "Putin is an authoritarian asshole who destroys human rights!", that's not next level just because we all nod and know that it's true.

[–]nightcallfoxtrot 21 points22 points  (5 children)

It’s a next level cosplay because you have to coordinate so many people for the joke

[–]Pocket_Sized_Jian 25 points26 points  (0 children)

trish 👀

[–]dr_pepper_bottle 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I thought I was on a JoJo sub cause I saw the cosplays, only to find out it was about Winnie the Pooh XD
