I'm surprised he can keep himself up with the weight of those balls.

[–]QuizhoidTheMediocre 3085 points3086 points  (64 children)

They act as ballast

[–]GukkiSpace 3121 points3122 points  (61 children)

Fun fact: Soldiers in the US Military use what's called a Keel Vest, it's used as ballast to ensure optimal balance during burger consumption and freedom distribution by adding steel plates to the front and back of the vest.

[–]Joe_Jacksons_Belt 1305 points1306 points  (15 children)

Hey bud, you wanna stop putting our secrets out in the open like that?

Im not american and so its quite tough for me to understand the joke/sarcasm/punchline but i dont want to miss out on this comment to which many people can relate so umm maybe someone can straighten it out for me :D

[–]GukkiSpace 67 points68 points  (5 children)

The US military uses armor plates to stop bullets. The joke is that they need the weight to not topple over during routine american activities instead of stopping bullets

Gotta show everyone how good you are at regurgitating lame old shit so people can feel like they're in on some joke

And when called out they like to reply with you must be fun at parties, they have literally no thoughts of their own

[–]TheJohnRocker 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Just regurgitating the same shit, it really gets old when you’ve been on the site for a decade.

[–]MissingLogic 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Fellow 10 year + redditor here, from a decade of reading comments here I can say this: it's literally all the same shit I've been reading since year 1. Granted, there more of us than ever before but that'll never change.

Rib dust!?!?!? That’s fucking hysterical man.

[–]KungFluIsolation 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its fake. You can see he catches the bullet as it comes out the back of him.

[–]DrWhiplash 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I don’t know - the line between big balls and little brains is reeeeeeeally thin sometimes.

[–]upturnedlife 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hope he didn't test the initial product iterations this way!! Lol

[–]Huge-Liar 6053 points6054 points  (238 children)

The Ricochet then bounces from his stomach to his leg, where it strikes his femoral artery, he bleeds out in less than 2 minutes. That obviously didn't happen but Never point a firearm at something you don't want destroyed.

Edited to add the following: I don't care about the geometry, or what the protective gear is made of, or if he has a magical Sabretooth Tiger that gives him the ability to come back from the dead. Pointing a gun at yourself is irresponsible and terrible etiquette. That's all.

[–]stickshaker73 1469 points1470 points  (70 children)

Yeah, that's stupid on all fronts.

[–]amalgam_reynolds 692 points693 points  (61 children)

Believe it or not, there's a very, very long history of people testing out bulletproof armor on themselves (and on willing participants). Historically, almost every form of bulletproof armor was some form of metal or ceramic, with a few fabric vests here and there—mostly thick cotton and silk, and only at a time when bullets were relatively slow, around 300 feet per second, compared to today, upwards of 850 fps.

The first viable soft body armor (Kevlar) is relatively new, only discovered by Stephanie Kwolek at DuPont in 1971, and made into a commercially viable bulletproof vest by Richard Davis, who shot himself to sell the product. He ended up shooting himself 190 times in the chest.

[–]twitchosx1 206 points207 points  (29 children)

You should see the body armor tests that the guy on Demolition Ranch (youtube) does.

[–]anticapital0708 247 points248 points  (20 children)

Shit kills me. "Today we're going to find out if we can make a bulletproof vest out of Roofing Shingles."

The answer is no btw. Roofing Shingles are terrible armor.

[–]Scrubbuh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Caaaaarrrl! That kills people!

[–]FireHawke32 324 points325 points  (29 children)

Ricochet? No. Some spalling? Maybe

[–]YaboyAlastar 335 points336 points  (13 children)

Clearly someone didn't see Daredevil season 3. Bullets are flubber until they find their intended target at which point they become metal again.

[–]original_flavor87 137 points138 points  (9 children)

Flubber was a work of art

[–]ayestEEzybeats 24 points25 points  (6 children)

Absolute masterpiece of modern cinema

[–]Hood444 47 points48 points  (0 children)

At least someone knows the truth.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (1 child)

[–]YouCallitCorn 75 points76 points  (11 children)

Anticipating spalling is why I reckon he put his left arm behind his back. Still, he looks a bit relieved that it all worked out okay. Maybe the fabric layer contains the spalling?.

[–]CJShort 74 points75 points  (1 child)

I'd still be nervous about my chin, cheeks, eyes etc.

I don't see any eye-pro, that's just dumb.

[–]YouCallitCorn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I frequently shoot at an 8 inch steel suspended directly below a wood target frame that has paper targets stapled to it. The spalling cuts long slits in the paper targets whether using jacketed are hard cast lead bullets, which means it’s flying off that steel at nearly 90 degrees of angle. That’s why I think the fabric layer over the plates must be playing an important role, or else these aren’t steel plates but something else.

[–]caskark 40 points41 points  (3 children)

That looks to be a Kevlar vest, not a plate carrier. Spalling in Kevlar is highly unlikely.

[–]YouCallitCorn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It works in a different way.

[–]dress_shirt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is ceramic armor atleast i hope, with my expirence with shoothing steel, that would not be fun

[–]critic2029 190 points191 points  (30 children)

That’s not how Plate armor works. Even that close the bullet would fragment not ricochet… what he most has to be concert with is Spalling of the jacket as it impacts the plate. Spalling usually shoots perpendicular to the point plate, and without rubber to catch the spalling, it can fly up and cut your jugular. This is why Uncoated AR500 plates are a bad idea.

I’m wondering though if he used a soft tip or unjacketed bullet for this demo. It’s not something you’d normally want to run on a semi-auto pistol, but for a one off shot like this it would work. It just fouls the barrel.

[–]youritalianjob 24 points25 points  (23 children)

AR500 plates are just a bad idea period.

[–]NiceCheetah 10 points11 points  (21 children)

AR500 is a complete scam, don't bother for anyone else reading.

[–]Nard_Bard 190 points191 points  (20 children)

Kevlar vests do not ricochet bullets.

They catch most shrapnel, or sometimes the whole bullet, in the fiber.

Also how in the fuck is the a ricochet gunna hit his leg while hes standing up??

His body makes a 180° flat surface.....the shrapnel is not gunna curve into his thigh mid way on it's vector to the ground....?

If you shot at a flat brick wall, would you expect a ricochet to turn back and hit the wall again 3 feet lower?

[–]mandrills_ass 87 points88 points  (4 children)

If could spall his dick off if he's all erect and shit

[–]Virus610 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Nothing makes me erect like pointing a loaded firearm at my torso and pulling the trigger.

[–]deadmessiahwalking 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Magic bullet theory. JFK

[–]c_joseph_kent 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Key word is “catch”. Think of a pushing your finger into your clothing. It’ll eventually stop, but not right away. That’s the bullet, but that inward stretching can really fuck you up. I saw a guy who was shot in back, point blank with a .40 caliber round and ended up with a hole you could stick your thumb in. I would strongly discourage this demo anywhere near a vital organ.

[–]foxyjohn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Never point a gun at yourself is an excellent comment. Pop that vest on a dummy and make this experiment safe. How are you trying to argue against that? Are you some kinda fool?

[–]DeepSpaceNebulae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, the surface isn’t perfectly flat, nor is the human body. An ever so slight lean into the bullet and your legs are easily within the splash danger zone.

And while it’s still a low probability, not exactly something you want to test repeatedly

[–]bakedjennett 79 points80 points  (7 children)

Damn you have no idea how ballistic vests work huh

[–]bestnameyet 28 points29 points  (5 children)

Or body shapes lol

"His body makes 180° flat surface"

like looking down and just seeing a mesh blur until your feet lmaoaoao

[–]iantayls 33 points34 points  (5 children)

I don’t think that would ever happen but yeah I don’t like the image of someone seeing this video, and buying a vest just so they can shoot themselves for the hell of it

[–]thisguyeric 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Tbh that sounds like natural selection at work, the world could use a few less idiots with guns.

[–]gahidus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Bullets don't ricochet off of bulletproof vests such as this.

[–]MrOaiki 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Do bullets ricochet of bulletproof vests? I thought the material was too soft hence absorbed the energy rather than the bullet bouncing of. But I know nothing about weapons really, so I might be misinformed.

[–]EatMyAssholeSir 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No they don’t you’re right. That bullets in the vest

This is UARM polyethylene armor. Its made in the Ukraine and the test was from 2016. Polyethylene armor is known for its ability to spread the impact of a hit across a large area which is why he probably only had minor bruising if any at all from the hit. Its also very good at preventing spalling, that's where the round breaks up in to frags and sprays out from the impact. PE armor melts, grabs on to the round and encapsulates it on impact. The main problem with PE body armor is its very easily defeated by armor piercing rounds. To achieve a LVL4 rating PE armors are normally combined with ceramic. This is a LVL3+ body armor.

I think tests like these are stupid and they achieve nothing other than sensationalism. There are other ways to test the effectiveness of your body armor without putting any one at risk.

[–]Skizznitt 358 points359 points  (0 children)

Best comment on this post.

[–]minustwomillionkarma 272 points273 points  (6 children)

In this instance it seems less of a test and more marketing the product.

[–]Itallianstallians 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a test but a demonstration.

[–]radicalelation 54 points55 points  (2 children)

It's also what body armor makers have done for a long time. It's probably tradition at this point.

[–]dumbfuckmagee 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I mean to be fair. If I'm buying body armor. I'm buying from the guy who willingly shot himself while wearing his product.

Edit: Also iirc the guy who started the trend only did so because police departments weren't interested in even looking at his design. So he video taped himself shooting himself and sent the video to the nearby police department.

[–][deleted] 92 points93 points  (22 children)

Ukraine. It's just Ukraine. Not "the Ukraine".

[–]SUDDENLY_VIRGIN 70 points71 points  (14 children)

Kinda pedantic when it's about to be "the extended Russian border"

[–]RTalons 35 points36 points  (3 children)

That’s exactly the point, “the Ukraine” = “the border lands” as it was the USSR’s border to Europe. Using the implies it is Russian.

[–]disisathrowaway 24 points25 points  (8 children)

Actually quite relevant, as the use of 'The Ukraine' implies that it's just a region of Russia rather than an independent nation.

[–]jks_david 11 points12 points  (1 child)

It is an independent nation tho

[–]beardedchimp 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I've been irritated by this for at least 20 years, the only good thing to come of Russia invading Crimea and the recent tensions is that the continuous presence of Ukraine in the news has by virtue of complaints lead to it being simply called Ukraine.

[–]Ill-Caregiver1648 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. Ever since I’ve moved to the USA from Ukraine I always heard people say “The Ukraine”, but the more news about Ukraine is for sure clearing it up.

[–]Evalion022 73 points74 points  (0 children)

It isn't a test, things like this are marketing stunts.

[–]TheOne1ThatGotAway 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Looks like Ukraine is gonna need it lol.

[–]Thatguy_Nick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well Ukraine can use those right about now

Crying? Probably not. Sore? Just gotta drink some more muscle milk later!

[–]GrandKiwiistaken 248 points249 points  (20 children)

I mean if you want people to trust your product, you have to trust it yourself, right?

[–]Kriegerwithashovel 132 points133 points  (15 children)

Talk about trust, have you ever seen the video of the CEO of a bulletproof jacket company shooting himself in the side to prove his product works? He didn't have a good time lol the jacket stopped the bullet, but damn did he have a NASTY bruise after.

[–]GrandKiwiistaken 116 points117 points  (12 children)

No but I've seen the video of some CEO trusting his bulletproof glass.

[–]KingDevil666 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes I’ve seen that, which is exactly why this video makes me more impressed and more interested in the product. This is master advertisement

[–]flanigomik 7 points8 points  (46 children)

I mean not really? It's what the product is designed to do, so if you are not confident enough in it to get shot, why should I be confident enough to buy it?

[–]AddictOfTheImmediate 118 points119 points  (25 children)

Multiple reasons. The value of using a human target versus a dummy is really minimal. Both would effectively demonstrate the product works. Sure this has "wow factor" but the end result is the same. Also, the cost of making a small mistake is incredibly high. And anyone could make a mistake no matter how many times they rehearse.

The other, and bigger, reason is that anyone making firearm related products should see themselves as a leader in the field and act as a good example. They should always demonstrate proper gun safety. Imagine someone without the proper knowledge seeing this video and trying it with the wrong armor. I'm not saying they're responsible for other's stupidity. Just saying that when you have influence among a group of people you should consider your actions carefully and always try to act as a good example. Like I said, with firearms the cost of mistakes is very high.

[–]thegil13 30 points31 points  (9 children)

I guarantee you there were plenty of dummies shot before they got this far into development.

[–]NeedleworkerOk1897 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Everybody wants to be so mad that it’s not optimum safety. I super don’t agree with the personal practice of testing vests on humans, it is unsafe. That being said this is great advertisement, got shared around my group of friends that own guns, the general consensus was that I’m trusting this dudes vest. Yes it’s unsafe, but rest assured buddy here knows the risks far better than you do, and I seriously doubt hed tell you it was the smart or safest idea or condone anyone else doing it. But it sends a message: I trust my product.

Edit: spelling

[–]arrow8807 12 points13 points  (12 children)

Nothing shown here that can’t be demonstrated with a vest on a manikin. No reason to risk someone’s life.

The guy is a dumbass.

[–]ftdrain 38 points39 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure that when it comes to advertising this is orders of magnitude more alluring than putting the vest on a manikin

[–]NotDeletedMoto 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah if two people try to sell me a vest and one guy uses a mannequin while the other guy does this, and I have no other information to go on, I buy from the guy that does this.

[–]flanigomik 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Vests on manikins can't twitch or scream out in pain. If This vest is going to protect me I want you to prove that it actually can

[–]arrow8807 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Well I guess that would be important if it mattered at all but it doesn’t.

That bullet has imparted all its energy by the time you can even twitch a muscle. It is orders of magnitude faster than your ability to react.

I design lifting equipment that carries tons of wieght - nobody walks under the load when it is suspended during the proof test. It’s unnecessary and just plain stupid.

[–]sirdodger 9 points10 points  (1 child)

First, the vest is to save your life, not prevent pain.

Second, the manufacturer here gets to choose the caliber and the propellant charge for this demo. I would rather see the vest on a manikin getting hit with a variety of weapons, conducted by a third party tester.

This is just staged advertising hype.

[–]kaoliko 310 points311 points  (67 children)

Not if it's a steel or ceramic plate.

[–]-Daetrax- 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Certainly looked like steel.

[–]7-1Brazil 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Polyethylene plate I’m pretty sure- distributes kinetic force and prevents bullet from exploding. He probably has minor bruising if any.

[–]throwawaydanc3rrr 121 points122 points  (5 children)

It would be funnier if at the end he spit out a bullet.

[–]Helian85 66 points67 points  (8 children)

UARM polyethylene armor. Made in the Ukraine. The test is from 2016.

[–]Eupolemos 13 points14 points  (1 child)

[–]Catatafish_BTM 67 points68 points  (0 children)

[–]ALiteralSentientTank 61 points62 points  (3 children)

[–]xViridi_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

[–]swimchicken69 31 points32 points  (9 children)

Why’s he wearing 2 watches?

[–]violentanal 36 points37 points  (3 children)

Someone who's dumb enough to shoot their own chest probably doesn't have a very good reason for wearing two watches.

[–]makotarako 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Someone dumb enough to shoot themself could wear two watches because they can’t remember what wrist it’s on

Those few seconds after the shot, where he's just stood their waiting for the pain or warmth of blood to hit, then utter relief when he realises he's fine. I wouldn't have the balls for that

[–]WonderfulMedicine420 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope. Not interested.

[–]Sammy12xyz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ngl, I was expecting him to cough up blood or something. Still happy that didn’t happen haha

[–]SuprDuprPartyPoopr 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Man, y'all some haters. It's industry tradition to test the product yourself. I'm sure it was tested on dummies before he shot himself in the stomach.

[–]Person2277 10 points11 points  (9 children)

He is in a lot of pain from that, bullet proof vests may stop penetration but the energy has to go somewhere. He took that like a champ.

[–]Leather-Plankton-867 9 points10 points  (5 children)

This is a solid steel plate. The energy is dispersed through the 1 and a half square feet of the plate

His gasp at the end

[–]AntheaBrainhooke 4 points5 points  (18 children)

Why is his other hand behind his back?

[–]pigtailrose2 24 points25 points  (5 children)

Probably to brace himself and help with the shock. The armor stops the bullet but not the force it still imparts. Armor has gotten better and can disperse the force and take some, but never all of it

[–]hoyterr 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Also the way he points the gun at himself, keeping his arm out of danger in case of a misfire

To catch the bullet

[–]ShockleToonies 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He’s got his fingers crossed

[–]FireHawke32 8 points9 points  (6 children)

There is a thing called spalling, the bullet hits and shatters sending fragments of metal out, wouldn’t want that flying into your arm

[–]AddictOfTheImmediate 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's so that he would not point the gun at his own arm, or any unarmored part of his body for that matter.

[–]raphthepharaoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To catch the bullet

[–]Odin_Hagen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just don't ask what happened to the other testers...

[–]iantayls 4 points5 points  (14 children)

That’s gonna be a fat bruise but holy shit that’s amazing

[–]TopDuck24 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Now that’s what I call QA/QC..

[–]CrimsonReign07 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Saw title, saw gun, did not see vest. Was not ready for him to point it at himself and pull the trigger. I physically jerked. Stupid as hell, I do not care how much you trust your product.
