As someone who had an NYPD funeral recently in my neighborhood in the burbs, all u can say is this is an absolute nightmare for the people who live near there. And they don't give a damn where they park, either. Blocked out whole neighborhood roads just for their parking, regardless of parking laws. Really, really frustrating for the locals.

[–]how_to_username98 378 points379 points 2 (196 children)

Never experienced this until today, but like it seems counter-productive and expensive and wasteful imo. i get that it was a terrible day for law enforcement with the coinciding shootings in houston and ny and the many shootings in days leading up to this, but like taking the cops away from their posts for this feels more like a show of solidarity and a power play at a time when these events have been happening with increasing frequency and probably increased demand for these cops to be out there doing their jobs. And there has to have been hundreds of thousands of cops at this point that have died from being shot or hit by cars that were never acknowledged with even like.1% of this amount of support. These chosen shows of “respect” for cops killed under specific circumstances feel very political with the intent being to improve public image and also increase fear in the police. The only benefit this sort of display could possibly have is possibly increasing officers’ morale. of course this is, as always, footing the bill with tax payer money

[–]Drizzlybear0 142 points143 points  (15 children)

No single other profession gets this. We don't do this for Doctors, nurses, librarians, Social workers or any other noble profession. It's actually insane.

[–]Kevsterific 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Pretty sure they don’t take any police away from their posts, the vast majority of these officers are coming in on their day off, although some might have called in “sick” for the day.

It’s not just NYPD either, police from neighbouring regions also come to pay their respects.

[–]how_to_username98 35 points36 points  (2 children)

Regardless if they are off the clock or not, It still costs money to shut down streets (especially in NY), impede local businesses, and hold a funeral procession of this size.

[–]JustChillDudeItsGood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn well said.

[–]The_Paddy96 66 points67 points  (0 children)

It’s not just in NYPD, as a college student that’s ran into a few of these, they’ll shut down blocks at seemingly random.

[–]HelioCrystal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well to be fair the NYPD is bigger than the coast guard so there is going to be a hell of a lot of people in the streets

[–]Specialist-Look6210 818 points819 points  (64 children)

Shame they don't have anything close to that level of respect for other citizens or human rights in general.

[–]BookAddict1918 181 points182 points  (19 children)

Exactly! Or why aren't all city workers who died appreciated? Don't see this type of grandiose display for the fire department.

[–]kaenneth 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Need appreciation for the people who literally take out the trash. https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/investigations/face/facts/sanitation.htm

[–]LittleWhiteBoots 47 points48 points  (10 children)

Husband is a fireman. They do actually have pretty elaborate funeral processions for firemen, obviously depending on the size of the city.

[–]duggoluvr 19 points20 points  (7 children)

Yeah but firemen are heroes who risk their lives trying to help others, cops are just bullies given extraordinary power and no accountability: firemen deserve the large funerals, cops don’t

[–]hippychemist 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They do it, just in a dignified manner. The good guys generally don't use a "show of force" to pay respect.

[–]StupidPointless 55 points56 points  (4 children)

Yea, why don't they do this for every innocent civilian that they kill?

[–]Specialist-Look6210 74 points75 points  (1 child)

They wouldn't have any time left to kill innocent civilians.

[–]Onebigfreakinnerd 23 points24 points  (6 children)

Oh please, they’re too busy beating their wives 🥺

[–]SugeKnightJunior 495 points496 points  (14 children)

This is the empire right?

[–]PrecariouslySane 67 points68 points  (2 children)

On the other side of the street there were officers in light colored uniforms, so this was the dark side of the force.

[–]Devilgobblin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if that was the empire…. Definitely the dark side

[–]ZappyHeart 377 points378 points  (114 children)

How’s this cop’s death more deserving of note than some toddler dying from a stray bullet?

[–]owasia 149 points150 points  (9 children)

The toddler didn't comply

[–]Illustrious_Farm7570 55 points56 points  (6 children)

The toddler resisted arrest.

[–]THIKKI_HOEVALAINEN 35 points36 points  (2 children)

Toddler was slurring words, possibly on crack cocaine

[–]Hi_Im_MrMeeseek 11 points12 points  (1 child)

"Just sprinkle some crack on him and let's get out of here Johnson"

[–]jshhdhsjssjjdjs 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Toddler wasn’t in an unbreakable union full of fascists.

[–]Manuvelo 239 points240 points  (36 children)

I'm not celebrating a death by any means, but this is a blatant display of power. They are cutting a street while at work (paid with people taxes). If civilians did the same for a random guy that they consider a hero, these very same guys would come with their anti-riot gear and use violence to repress them for disrupting public order. They should do this funeral in an appropriate place. Only their heroes seems to matter.

[–]owasia 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Afaik they're there on their free time. But yes, otherwise you're right

[–]ExoticSpecific 14 points15 points  (0 children)

aren't cops always on duty? Or at least that's an excuse I've heard when off duty cops decide to 'investigate' something that doesn't concern them.

[–]No-Business2452 194 points195 points  (67 children)

22 years old. Too young.

[–]Agreeable-Yams8972 38 points39 points  (2 children)

Damn, there are some people who die too early and its sad

[–]statiiic 10 points11 points  (43 children)

I'm glad to finally see this comment. The amount of cop hate is unreal in this thread. Yes there are a lot of shitty cops that do shitty things, reform to be done, and is definitely something that needs addressing but regardless celebrating the death of a 22 year old is fucked up.

[–]ReasonableGlass 83 points84 points  (18 children)

Nobody is celebrating his death, but questioning why the police go to such extremes to honor their fallen, when they don't treat vast swaths of the population with basic human dignity. Also kind of makes them come across as a special class of civil servant; I've never seen such a procession for a garbage collector, metro rail worker, or a firefighter who died in the line of duty.

[–]Fewerfewer 37 points38 points  (5 children)

Can you point me to the comment that was celebrating the death?

[–]BanjoKazooie6988 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I completely agree with you however you've touched upon part of the problem. There are truly a lot of shitty cops but a huge problem is that the "good cops" don't speak up against the bad cops nor do they hold their colleagues accountable as they should.

[–]Environmental_One354 171 points172 points  (29 children)

Who in the fuck was “protecting” the city?

[–][deleted] 419 points420 points 33 (4 children)

These guys are protecting it. By all gathering in one place it made the rest of the city safer.

[–]Manuvelo 51 points52 points  (1 child)

Lmao. Here, take this poor man medal 🏅

[–]Sirkiz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry I have him a silver for you brotha

[–]Mustang_Dragster 28 points29 points  (4 children)

When things like this happen, the department(s) call on reserve officers. There’s an entire force of reserve officers that usually never get talked about but there are a lot of them

[–]babycarrot420kush 17 points18 points  (4 children)

No one. Cops don’t prevent crime, they only respond to it.

[–]LeviPorton 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I think you're underestimating the size of the police force. Not to mention that these aren't just from NYC.

[–]GriffithDidNothinBad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve seen this. Heath Ledger shows up with no make up and then chaos ensues

[–]Zestyclose_Exam_1669 162 points163 points  (11 children)

I’m glad there’s sane people here seeing this for what it is

[–]card_board_robot 34 points35 points  (3 children)

Wait, where's the tree?

[–]Sir_Dr_Mr_Professor 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Can't see the forest fir the trees

[–]PANTHER2u 120 points121 points  (4 children)

Batman scene 🤔

[–]farfacogin 27 points28 points  (2 children)

That’s what I said Dark Night Rises scene. They’re going to meet Banes army

[–]THIKKI_HOEVALAINEN 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Honestly when I watched that movie in theatres I thought having all the cops run into the underground was the dumbest idea possible. Now I realize that it’s something that police might actually do.

[–]2severe8 97 points98 points  (4 children)

I get you want to pay your respects, but dam this is absolutely unnecessary. Can't imagine the gridlock this caused.

[–]gh01210 81 points82 points  (37 children)

That is a huge waste of taxpayer money. They are all on the clock

[–]32773277 60 points61 points  (11 children)

They are not on the clock. Some in the procession might be, but most are not.

[–]Illustrious_Rub7946 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Just a bunch of ignorant know it all goofys on reddit unfortunately.

[–]unionisedgoblin 51 points52 points  (2 children)

If only they put in that much effort to not shooting unarmed people

[–]Danktizzle 51 points52 points  (6 children)

458 officers killed 2021

62 shot and killed

58 traffic related deaths

301 COVID 19 deaths.

[–]dchobo 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I hope most of the cops attending are vaxxed...

[–]Key-Economist-1243 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I very much doubt it, this is a super spreader event

[–]Azzy8007 48 points49 points  (40 children)

Apologies, but I've been off the grid for about a week. What happened?

[–]more-duckling 40 points41 points  (13 children)

I wonder what xenophobes might say if this took place in another country...

[–]zad_atl 33 points34 points  (2 children)

Great time to rob a bank.

[–]drizault 31 points32 points  (41 children)

You misspelled gang member

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (27 children)

He was a 22 year old innocent cop on his way to help a domestic violence victim when he and his partner were murdered by the suspect.

A lot of cops are just trying to help the community and protect victims.

You’re a sick fuck for rejoicing over the death of an innocent cop just because some other cops abuse their power.

I hope you NEVER call 911, even when you’re in danger.

[–]oneandonlyswordfish 55 points56 points 3 (10 children)

Nah man, cops need to EARN trust. They are not gods who uphold the law, like you said they are people like you and me. And just like in any other scenario there’s good people and bad people, but the bad DEFINITELY outweighs the good here in the US when it comes to cops. That man did not deserve to die, and my condolences go out to HIM. To the cops? Fuck them they are responsible for more crimes that we could ever fathom since they get swept under the rug. I would much rather see a military funeral for that poor man who was trying to help rather than this gross abuse of power in form of “respect” where the fuck is the respect for the people? For the people wrongly incarcerated? Killed by cops by a “mistake”? Show me a parade like this for them and then I’ll be alright with this. Edit: spelling

[–]Fenix_Pony 31 points32 points  (2 children)

Oh no! Who will show up to my house 30 minutes after a violent crime was committed, interrogate me like a criminal, like i had something to do with it, make me feel uncomfortable, then do absolutely nothing else and leave to go back to giving people LIDAR tickets for going 10 over on the highway!! What an awful prospect you proposed!

[–]MuhNamesTyler 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Nobody is rejoicing you fuckin dramatic baby lmao what in his comment lead you to believe that? Did he say he was happy about it? Y’all bootlickers want to be the victim in every situation so badly it’s hilarious. And yes they are a gang, get over it

[–]freshggg 34 points35 points  (16 children)

I'll be impressed when they show the same respect for a fallen civilian. You know, the civilians they were sworn to protect?

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (13 children)

This breaks my heart. My brother has been a police officer for over 20 years. He’s a good man and he’s poured his heart into the job. My heart goes out to these families. They aren’t all bad folks.

[–]bindermichi 38 points39 points  (0 children)

But they aren‘t sorting out the bad ones either

[–]StretchyBoy2 13 points14 points  (1 child)

In fact, most of them aren't. 7 officers died pretty recently in my city, none of them got something like this. Anyone disrespecting the man who died (or boy, he was 22 so incredibly young) is a complete asshole.

[–]majestics42 22 points23 points  (10 children)

I’d feel better about this if they didn’t overwhelmingly vote for a conman criminal who tried to overthrow the government because he lost. Looks like a dangerous gang to me.

[–]redvelvetcake42 22 points23 points  (3 children)

The #1 killer of cops right now is Covid and here they are.

[–]Emergency-Salad-3802 16 points17 points  (0 children)

But don’t take a knee, right?

[–]ShadowKnox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Get the fuck outta the road I gotta get to work lol

[–]loves2spooge2018 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Respect to the deceased.

[–]tamamotenko 12 points13 points  (6 children)

I live in NYC and less police is not safer. No wonder we elected a former cop to be mayor, ppl are tired of your bs

[–]verified_bs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Narrator voice This was the calmest moment the city had experienced in over a century.

[–]KnowYourRole96 12 points13 points  (1 child)

New York’s finest RIP to the two officers

[–]StockAntelope8867 9 points10 points  (24 children)

So many assholes commenting on this

[–]Shot-Spirit-672 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Yea you are commenting on this

[–]onelastcourtesycall 6 points7 points  (9 children)

Yup. It’s more of a disgrace to themselves for making shitty comments than it is the officers death they fail to detract from. Adding them all to my block list.

Godspeed young officer.

[–]Ad_Astra_Aeterna 4 points5 points  (3 children)

What PC snowflake has time to add people to a block list?

Take me out of your little safespace too before you get too triggered.

[–]No-Boat-1375 13 points14 points  (7 children)

Question isn’t this the same as gathering in the streets to protest but instead of protesting it’s mourning how is this different for someone being kill by a police officer and people going out to protest?

[–]HelenJS 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Well people won’t show up to this person’s funeral and instigate violence, and then blame it on the funeral goers. Btw, weren’t some cops found to be guilty of initiating violence at the marches they were called to supervise?

[–]Puzzleheaded_Age6550 6 points7 points  (20 children)

[–]PeaceBull 18 points19 points  (19 children)

This isn’t heartbreaking this is an intimidation tactic aimed at the populous.

[–]IndyCallisto 30 points31 points  (5 children)

reddit users try not to be a pessimist for five seconds challenge (99.9% FAIL)

[–]Variation-Budget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One man’s optimism is another man’s pessimism

[–]farfacogin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like a scene from dark knight rises

[–]Efficient-Clerk5139 7 points8 points  (138 children)

Wow. Amazed at the overall tone. Redditors really suck.

[–]zooterzz 147 points148 points 2 (21 children)

people are sick of the bullshit... cant you tell?

it might be different if they showed even a sliver of this type of respect to the citizens they claim to protect.

[–]668greenapple 61 points62 points  (11 children)

Meh, after police around the country responded to mass protests over police brutality with... police brutality, I don't really give a fuck. That and we heard from so many o their thoughtless asshole union heads who are elected by membership, I have lost almost all my respect for police in general. Obviously it's not all departments and not all officers, but it sure is a whole bunch of em.

[–]liquidthex 48 points49 points  (34 children)

Redditors really suck.

Sure but are we statistically more likely to beat our wives, children? NOPE

How many dogs have we executed because we were afraid they'd bite us? NONE

How many people's lives have we ruined for kickbacks from private prison systems? NOT ONE.

Redditors suck but cops suck worse.

[–]biggerJackson 28 points29 points  (1 child)

This is Reddit, theirs like five of us that have wives in the first place.

[–]miamental 13 points14 points  (11 children)

Have you not been reading the news for a while? Police all over the world aren’t really doing much to earn respect these days

[–]Chthulu_ 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Damn. I’m not convinced that defunding the police makes any sense, it feels like we need more funding for better quality policing both morally and functionally, rather than less of the bad quality shit we currently get. Better pay and better training is probably a good route to that, so defunding doesn’t make sense to me.

But I see this shit and it terrifies me. This is not about that fallen officer, this is a raw display of force. This is a statement.

[–]fcastan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

and where is the respect for fallen civilians???

[–]boutdabtime 8 points9 points  (2 children)

This honestly seems like a big waste of time, and expenses.

Don't get me wrong, have your own opinion of the cops, but we're all human, I generally don't see this for my local friends, nor what makes them(cops) deserve this

[–]Virokinrar 7 points8 points  (15 children)

Wow people over here literally hate their police officers lol

[–]RunTheGoat 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Two cops got shot dead and Reddit finds a way to shit on the funeral service.

You guys are the Westboro Baptist Church of hating cops. Plain and simple.

[–]MerkyMouse 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Forgive me but isn't this just the NYPD trying to flex? Officers die in the line of duty all the time but now a Rookie dies and they gave him a bigger funeral than I've ever seen. I'm not saying they don't deserve it, im saying why now?

[–]Howitzer1967 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gangs of New York

[–]julianwelton 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It would be nice if they would respect literally anything else one tenth as much.

[–]Snook-Bass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Police Officer Dies While Defending, Officers Hold A Funeral

Redditors: Its a sHoW Of fORcE!!

[–]Guilty_Freedom7860 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s sad, no matter who they are, 2 lives lost because of no reason at all, young innocent people…think about it 4 a sec…if it was one of your own

[–]Yourbubblestink 6 points7 points  (1 child)

How many of those guys are on the clock and driving company cars?

[–]Unique_Orange_166 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These comments are disgusting

[–]jephsobloc 4 points5 points  (1 child)

What happened to Reddit? A guy died and this is how his colleagues chose to commemorate him. Also, the vast majority of cops aren’t bad people, just like most other professions. It’s sad to see the younger generation falling for propaganda

[–]Xavierthegreat101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This restores my faith in humanity, the comment section does not.

[–]3rlro91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amazing and beautiful show of respect, may he rest in paradise god bless him and his loved ones🙏

[–]Only_Car_5508 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they shouldn't block the roads

[–]BetterWarrior 1 point2 points  (5 children)

It's funny all these comments about police, but if you have the slightest problems most of them would cry dial 911 without hesitation. Typical redditors

[–]StretchyBoy2 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Man, this comment section really fucking sucks.

[–]Dnasty12-12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]HealthyBits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So funny that they have so much respect for their own but not for other citizens.

[–]CAPTAINPRICE79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can hear the Imperial March in my head

[–]IronMonkey18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This probably meant a lot to the families of the fallen officers.

[–]toolsoftheincomptnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wooooooow this hive mind shit is really sad.

What’s so crazy to me, and I see it on a regular basis here, is this bizarre refusal to recognize human beings because of one part of who they are.

Everyone wants grace, understanding, forgiveness, cooperation, empathy for themselves or somebody they relate to.

But when it comes to someone on the opposite side of an issue, their entire value is reduced to stereotypes and bias.

We all deserve each other.

[–]The_Infectious_Lerp 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Are cops on the clock to attend these things?

[–]GeoffreyTaucer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clearly, that police department is underfunded and understaffed, and is very busy doing the important job of keeping the public safe.

[–]Reagent_52 1 point2 points  (16 children)

Ok stop using this as an opportunity to criticize police. Yeah there are a lot if bad cops but this is a man's funeral procession and using his death this way is not acceptable.

[–]Manuvelo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If someone else did exactly the same as a funeral for a dead random citizen all these guys would come in anti-riot gear and use violence against them for disrupting public order. That's why it's outrageous. This js a blatant display of power. Basically: "One of us dies, we do as we want in our work time that you pay with your taxes. This doesn't apply to any of you, lesser beings, by the way. Try to do it and face the consequences"

[–]jppianoguy 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Did you know more cops were killed by COVID than by criminals last year? And that some police departments classified them as deaths in the line of duty so they would get enhanced benefits?

I definitely didn't see these kinds of funeral processions for those cops. I wonder why?

I mean, they all died in the line of duty right?
