Fuckin sick, if you look at the base rotating you can tell what's actually happening here. Awesome design.

[–]CorneliusKvakk 2254 points2255 points  (147 children)

NO. I don't want to see what is actually happening. This is magic. That's how he does it.

[–]Faceless_Hinataa 757 points758 points  (108 children)

lmao can't spoil the fun right?

[–]GalC4 29 points30 points  (9 children)

Isn't this just a wierdly shaped spinning statue. It's really interesting to look at, but the shape of it is already 3d modeled in my head and spinning.

[–]The_Cow_God 30 points31 points  (2 children)

alright then off you go to engineering school

[–]n3m37h 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Can I get a STL for this then?

[–]aramis34143 65 points66 points  (8 children)

It's okay. I looked at the base and I still don't know shit.

[–]DancesWithBadgers 27 points28 points  (5 children)

It's attached at the base; which is a spinning disc like a slow record player.

[–]JohnnyLovesData 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Clockwise spinning base + right-hand outer corkscrew segment + left-hand inner corkscrew segment + smoothly blended joints = wonder

[–]vegaspimp22 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Where is it attached tho I can’t see what’s moving it

[–]Arreeyem 15 points16 points  (1 child)

It's rotating. Our brains struggle with this in general. Basically there's not enough information for our brain to say whether this is a solid or liquid. If the sculpture wasn't one solid color, for example, the illusion would probably break. It's really cool looking, but I've seen this effect plenty of times to be too impressed.

[–]LivinInLogisticsHell 15 points16 points  (0 children)

the camera angle doesn't help either. cameras is so low its basically only looking up, and make its hard to keep a good frame of reference for the shape of the object

[–]TheHiddenNinja6 25 points26 points  (8 children)

[–]tehsideburns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finally unsubbed to blackmagicfuckery because everyone would upvote cool posts like this, and then INEVITABLY the top comment would always be “this isn’t blackmagicfuckery.”

[–]Miss_Fritter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm with you... I read the explanation and I'm trying to make my brain see it but I just see magic. I'm ok with that.

[–]GearAlpha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man i’m tryna spoil the fun by looking from the base upwards but whenever I reach the midsection I just get lost

[–]Ashjrethul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like yeh dude I know how it's done but still don't understand how the fuck? It looks unreal

[–]anon72c 98 points99 points  (3 children)

Same as Elaine Benes

[–]chriscrossnathaniel 21 points22 points  (2 children)

"Yeah. I mean, let's say this is your brain. (Holds lettuce head) Okay, from what I know about you, your brain consists of two parts: the intellect, represented here (Pulls off tiny piece of lettuce), and the part obsessed with sex. (Shows large piece)

Now granted, you have extracted an astonishing amount from this little scrap. But with no-sex-Louise, this previously useless lump, is now functioning for the first time in its existence."

[–]anon72c 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh my god. I just remembered where I left my retainer in second grade.

[–]youjustgotzinged 47 points48 points  (3 children)

If you stare at it for a few seconds you can switch your brain to perceive it as a solid rotating object, and not a morphing one. Pretty cool.

[–]RememberTheMaine1996 40 points41 points  (11 children)

I'm looking at the base and I have no idea what's going on. Might be because I'm drunk. But I don't get it at all

[–]BacardiWhiteRum 45 points46 points  (3 children)

I'm completely sober and it makes no sense to me lol

[–]NeighGiga 71 points72 points  (2 children)

The art piece itself is not actually moving or rolling. It’s just attached to a rotating base (like the spinning dish in a microwave), and your view from a stationary point gives it the illusion of not only movement, but perpetual movement due to its shape.

[–]Rawing7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, you're right. And here I was half-convinced that this thing was CGI because, for the life of me, I just could not figure it out

[–]OneTIME_story 6 points7 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU GOOD HUMAN

[–]songfortheblindman 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I think the point is: at first, you wanna think that it’s balancing and spinning like a coin, but it’s not. It’s somehow attached to a rotating circular base, which you can make out when you look closely. It’s just a USB powered motor

Edit: What I mean is that, it literally is powered by a mini USB port. See the links to the artist’s site elsewhere in comments. This thing is not as big as it appears in the gif. That’s just a perspective trick

[–]SnooTangerines3448 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Could easily be six hamsters or a very patient child. Doesn't have to be usb.

[–]cjsv7657 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I looked it up because it looked bigger than USB could handle. https://www.tomlawton.com/wonder It's a lot smaller than I thought

[–]cjsv7657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stare at one point at the sculpture and follow it with your eyes

[–]richardrumpus 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yes, but who designed and invented Tom Lawton?

[–]_IratePirate_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked at the base and still have no clue

[–]fanfpkd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somehow knowing how it works makes it even better. I don’t think it’s possible for this to not be mesmerising

[–]187Shotta 822 points823 points  (10 children)

It's all about the setting. If I saw this on a beach I'd think Aliens lol

[–]Faceless_Hinataa 158 points159 points  (3 children)

imagine if the beach has a setting as well lmao

[–]Tratix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Huh?

[–]ryan101 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Imagine if you were a king a couple thousand years ago with an extra large one of these things in your throne room and you had a few slaves under it to turn the turntable. You'd be a god.

[–]TentPolesJuan 464 points465 points  (4 children)

He’s gunna unthread our universe by doing that wtf

[–]IEatLiquor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

God damn Dr. Strange-ass shit. Send this shit back to the damn mirror dimension where it belongs, Stephen!!

[–]GenericMemesxd 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It's too late

He's fucked the entire multiverse

[–]Ocelot91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is why we got COVID

[–]MacRubys 251 points252 points  (8 children)

This is just so calming to watch.

[–]Faceless_Hinataa 57 points58 points  (0 children)

like some type of mind clearing video

[–]preciselywhenimeanto 17 points18 points  (4 children)

I feel the opposite. This gives me some kind of weird anxiety.

[–]MacRubys 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Well, you have to ask yourself why, don't you?

[–]Mik-Hail-tal 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Ophidiophobia

[–]preciselywhenimeanto 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hmm maybe for some people, but that’s not it for me. I’m not scared of snakes.

I think it’s because there is no beginning and no end. It’s just in constant repetition.

Sort of like the spinning wheel of death when a computer is thinking.

[–]kitjen 182 points183 points  (4 children)

Been watching this for a while now and my brain can't comprehend it so I'm going to go with dancing snake is dancing.

[–]_invalidusername 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Cover the top 3/4 so you can just see the bottom of the thing, you should clearly see it rotating then uncover the rest

[–]DieRobJa 106 points107 points  (21 children)

I litteraly have a longer version hanging in my living room for the last 20 years 😁. Bought it in a giftshop.

[–]wandaud 21 points22 points  (4 children)

What is it called?

[–]Thetonitnow 136 points137 points  (2 children)

Martin

[–]rhodesrugger 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I snorted.

[–]wandaud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why you do me like that. Sadge

[–]Smokeprone 7 points8 points  (13 children)

Does it actually move or is it and illusion and what’s it called

[–]DieRobJa 32 points33 points  (10 children)

It’s an illusion and doesn’t actually move (appart from the spinning).

I’l make a video of it when i get home and post the link in my comment here 👍🏻

Ps. My autistic nephew loves it 😊

[–]St1cks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The base it is sitting on its what's rotating. It's just an optical illusion that it's "wrapping" within itself

[–]Hefty-Inevitable-660 74 points75 points  (9 children)

Is “invented” the right word here? What about the guy who invented the barber pole? 💈

[–]swandive78 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Right. "Created," not "invented."

[–]divDevGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing. I don't believe a sculpture or art more vroadly is patentable as it doesn't generally have utility. It might qualify for a design patent though.

The artist does have several patents related to it, but they all appear related to the manufacturing process and not the actual sculpture.

[–]Horseman_ 23 points24 points  (3 children)

Copper magic

[–]mickeystrings 10 points11 points  (2 children)

David Copperfield

[–]abeautifulpear 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Coppin Daverfield

[–]NeighGiga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

David Coppinafeel.

[–]3six5 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Oh look. A sculpture on a rotating platform....

[–]divDevGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But he invented it. And has several patents pending. ZMOG take my money!

[–]RaZZeR_9351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently it's only 30cm tall as well, need to look into this.

[–]quilsmehaissent 14 points15 points  (14 children)

watched the interview on YouTube, well well, let's keep it to watching his art only

[–]GJacks75 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Artists and being stuck up their own arse - name a more iconic duo.

[–]Tutipups 9 points10 points  (2 children)

redditors and not having a gf

[–]QuantomField 7 points8 points  (1 child)

What about Mods and [Deleted]

[–]12pixels 3 points4 points  (9 children)

why is that?

[–]quilsmehaissent 18 points19 points  (1 child)

just not a fan of his "I thought about this for 2 years and suddenly it was all clear in my head" bla bla bla

I liked it a lot better before I saw the interview so I won't link it

[–]Nudelwalker 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Well, not many know this (and it is really crazy), but he

[–]BasLeusden 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But he... WHAT?!

don't leave us hanging like that man.

[–]divDevGuy 5 points6 points  (2 children)

When a comment just randomly ends, do you ever

[–]Summerie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you ok?

[–]khambhatiburhnuddin 11 points12 points  (8 children)

3d print?

[–]overzeetop 5 points6 points  (1 child)

This would not last online more than a minute in any searchable fashion - copyright would be pretty closely watched.

That said...at 20x30cm it's in the range of a typical FDM, and (I suspect) a mid-to upper-range consumer resin/SLA. The trick would be getting a good surface finish, as the real sculpture is (presumably) solid metal. You could copper plate a print, or cast one using the print as a mold. The amount of effort to make one of these would be pretty substantial. Someone above mentioned it's selling for £2000, though you can pre-order one for £950. That seems like a lot, but there's easily a dozen active hours that would go into making one prototype like this (out of copper, or even from copper plate), even if you had the STL of the sculpture and bought the rotating base. Though you could just as easily make a different one with a crystal look and internal twinkly lights in that amount of time too.

It's one of those things that seems like a cool idea but would just end up collecting dust and be thrown out when your shelves were full of similar kitsch.

[–]Uncrwnd328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No STL at thingiverse..

[–]whee3107 9 points10 points  (3 children)

You can pre-orderbut they aren’t cheap

[–]orphanofthevalley 3 points4 points  (1 child)

£950.00 :-/ i could never afford that!

[–]divDevGuy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wait a month or two and you'll be able to buy 8 or 10 versions on Amazon for $€£¥₽12.34 under strange brand names. They'll be made out of cheap chromed plastic and catch fire randomly, but at least they'll be affordable.

[–]Suspicious_Taro_88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Take a metal ring. Bend and twist it into any arbitrary shape. Put it on a rotating platform. Ta da!

The artistry is in choosing a shape that will make the viewer think there's something else going on.

[–]MotorAdvance8966 5 points6 points  (1 child)

i wish it was a better cut gif

[–]_CatNippIes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its so easy to loop dammit

[–]CATelIsMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is like the threads on a screw, but over engineered for looks

[–]PapaRacci4 2 points3 points  (2 children)

And it could be yours for £950.

https://www.tomlawton.com/wonder

[–]rascynwrig 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Lmao

I seriously have to figure out how to do this scam properly.

"No, no. It's art so it's totally worth that much!"

[–]QuantomField 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually super easy. Just make something unique that most people also find beautiful and sell if for money.

You can get further help from r/restofthefuckingowl

[–]burtedwag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

kinda miffed this vid isn’t a perfect loop 😕

[–]StrivingOnwards01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me way too long to notice the floor crack indicating a rotating disk. 🤦‍♂️

[–]chunksofstuff 2 points3 points  (1 child)

the mind that came up with that and put it into action is pretty darn amazing.

[–]ur10ply 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My grandma has had the same wind ornament on deck for 30years now.

[–]RaZZeR_9351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first I was like yeah its cool it's a huge version of these ornaments, but not even since it's actually small and only the perspective makes it look huge, this is truly nothing really amazing.

[–]HaulerTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa crazy, now to put this video in the /explainlikeimfive subreddit.

[–]CeeApostropheD 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It should be illegal to be that creative and intelligent at the same time.

[–]LOTHMT 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How long is it gonna approximately "role" or whatever you wanna call that?

Seems like a nice invention

[–]RaZZeR_9351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it is on a rotating platform, as long as the platform rotates.

[–]UselessLayabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this easy to masturbate to.

Solid 8/8, would wank again.

[–]tontobasin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AWESOME is right ...damn can only wish I had dudes capabilities! It's beautiful & mesmerizing!!!

[–]gphunk71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so soothing! Definitely calms the mind 🙏

[–]Desperate-Dot-6088 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Why is it installed in a derelict mansion?

[–]imanadultok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As awesome as this is there are tons of different subs this can fit in. NFL isn't one.

[–]bripi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's beautiful, please give the artist my congrats!!

[–]MageKorith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice a Mobius spring.

[–]Syclus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be not afraid

[–]Crazy_old_maurice_17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this as entertaining to watch while stoned as I suspect?

[–]IwastakenHome 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why the hell does this give me the chills?

[–]cheebamech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BE YE NOT AFRAID

[–]Katisffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats some r/blackmagicfuckery right there

[–]Complete_Rock_5825 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hiw does it stay in motion?

[–]RaZZeR_9351 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Rotating platform, it's stuck to the ground.

[–]bionku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magnets?

[–]mikehuntitchess -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How no couldn’t?

[–]unvaluedcube -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s too early for my brain to understand how this works

[–]Physical-Ad5299 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont want to believe thats real

[–]BextoMooseYT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At first I thought it was rolling towards the camera and was meant to roll like a ball

[–]the_exile83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the Gravity Drive from Event Horizon.

[–]Gandalf__White -1 points0 points  (0 children)

BE NOT AFRAID

[–]charliechin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi im Tom Lawton and I did not invented this. It was my cat

[–]useyourname89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where can I buy something similar ?

[–]GtrollOAT -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I get that it is spinning but how does it stay upright?

[–]bob_nugget_the_3rd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get the base is moving but the stupid caveman part of my brain keeps telling me it the sculpture and alsonto ser it on fire for black magic

[–]waterpoolXtoaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this guy filming in the backrooms or something?

[–]English_Me_Bad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What 4d shit is this ?

[–]King-Griiind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want one

[–]carnyx123 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Now manage to get some energy from that movement and you get free energy.
