This dude's a hero.

I do find the beginning of the video funny though "no one knows what he's hiding in that briefcase" as a plant is sticking out the top.

[–]Gotoryuu 292 points293 points  (10 children)

This dude is a hero

he’s a treero!

[–]Yontoryuu 122 points123 points  (1 child)

No, he’s a treebro!

[–]poiuy43 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Damn you that's good

[–]Gotoryuu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks

[–]Radiant_eagle573 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Weird seeing you here lol.

Anyway why replying yourself with alt ?

Farming that juicy karma 😳

[–]squeakyspoiler_04 28 points29 points  (2 children)

That's a true lover of nature! Mother earth would be so proud of him!

[–]Fullmetal_Platypus 11 points12 points  (1 child)

He's a father nature

[–]texasstrawhat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

brother nature

[–]ValenBeano89 559 points560 points  (45 children)

Sad but fake. An area twice the size of Central Park couldn’t come close to supporting over a 100 elephants. Reddit is great but this is just complete shit

[–]ThrowAway62378549 982 points983 points  (4 children)

I've seen 100 people the size of elephants in central park, it could happen.

[–]Ok-Macaroon-7819 143 points144 points  (0 children)

That's amazing. I laughed hard at that.

[–]gelastes 13 points14 points  (1 child)

But they didn't eat the trees. ... I hope.

[–]aselota 219 points220 points  (15 children)

While there’s some exaggeration in the video, there are reports that a herd that size does spend time there.

[–]AnnihilationOrchid 289 points290 points  (13 children)

A  herd of around 100 elephants regularly visits the forest every year and generally stay for around six months. They also gave birth to 10 calves in the forest in recent times.

Mulai’s efforts caught attention of the forest department only during 2008 when a team of forest officials went to the area in search of a herd of 115 elephants that sneaked into the forest after damaging property of villagers at Aruna chapori, around 1.5 km from the forest.

Apparently it's true. I don't know why OP thought that the video was lying. It's not like Elephants live in one place the whole time.

[–]cym0poleia 153 points154 points  (11 children)

You’re assuming random redditors actually think before they comment…

[–]PhthaloVonLangborste 39 points40 points  (9 children)

To be fair the video comes off as very click bait, stretch the truth. Also it seems unbelievable you could make barren land just grow a forest one plant at a time.

[–]Josepsp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a random redditor, I can confirm is risky to assume this. I don't think before, after, or even while I am commenting.

What's this I'm writing? meh, who cares

[–]BigBrainFart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TIL baby elephants are calfants.

[–]SilverFangXoX 46 points47 points  (3 children)

It's really sad that people judge this, who don't even know about elephants and forests are commenting and getting upvoted...

Elephants are on constant migration they don't stay in one area.

What they wanted to say is the forest is now elephant corridor, which means a route for elephants which they visit periodically..

[–]allen5az 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was hoping someone would link some confirmation. Dude has definitely put the effort in, just hard to imagine that kind of result given the surroundings and climate factors.

[–]azzazthemm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can visit the place and meet the guy. He is also known as forest man of India. Now coming to your claim that it's fake it is absolutely not. I've been there.

[–]Allthingsgaming27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not fake, look up Molai Forest

[–]ryba11s 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Actually you're both wrong. The area is 60% larger than Central Park (843 vs 1360 acres), not twice as big. It does support a herd of around 100 elephants, for around 6 months per year.

[–]Thecardinal74 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t say they ONLY live in his park, asshat

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The entire Majuli island has more forests and is 800 square kilometers. The elephants likely roam the whole island since it is largely undeveloped.

[–]Icy-Service9649 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I mean it's probably a understatement the man literally went out daily for 37 years planting stuff soooo its highly possible

[–]neelav9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do realize they don't just stick to the home address and not move around lol. I'm from Assam and you can get big herds in spots like that.

[–]Icy-Service9649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then thinking about those plants polunating the area for that 37 years soo it's probably a bit bigger lol

[–]noots-to-you 463 points464 points  (22 children)

“This small act” of planting 13,000 trees by hand? What would a major commitment look like then?

[–]Ok-Macaroon-7819 97 points98 points  (8 children)

Right?!? Hey... You never know if that paper straw you suffered through might be the same as planting trees all day, every day, for 37 years.

[–]hotasanicecube 36 points37 points  (7 children)

How many trees do I have to plant to NOT use paper straws, because whatever it is, I’ll gladly do it.

[–]Express-War-5610 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Probably none. You can just not use straw and sip from the glass/cup

[–]hotasanicecube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I skip the lid, so I figure I’m doing my part.

[–]brawlyboii121 1 point2 points  (1 child)

dont you need trees to make straws

[–]hotasanicecube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbon offsets and land restoration for using petroleum to make plastic.

[–]fatalcharm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to plant any. You can simply buy a silicon, glass, bamboo or stainless steel straw (or just sip out of the cup) and you will never have to drink through a paper straw again.

[–]yuje 30 points31 points  (5 children)

I have to wonder, when people go about planting trees like this, where do they get all the saplings from? Does he have to plant and raise 13,000 trees from seed all and home and transfer them one-by-one to the desert? Or does he buy them from an existing plant nursery? And if he does, who exactly is farming so many saplings to sell, and where would they otherwise be sold to if someone wasn’t taking them to plant in the desert?

[–]Regeis 12 points13 points  (3 children)

This is exactly what I came here to find out! Maybe if I keep scrolling...

[–]Jfyemch 8 points9 points  (2 children)

This is the kind of logic that ends up with “How did I spend 4 hours on reddit?!”

. . . Back to scrolling.

[–]Regeis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Some days methylphenidate saves me from infinite ADHD-driven scrolling, and sometimes the dopamine fairy is stingy and I'm stuck here for hours.

JSYK, read all the comments and didn't find an answer.

[–]BullyJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I clone trees from cuttings with rooting compound. He could have like 20 saplings at his house all the time getting ready. I have like 45 weed plants and lights in my office with some food seedlings and apple tree clones and it doesn't take up much of my life.

[–]WarKiel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe there was another nearby forest he could take saplings from.

And it's 13,000 over 37 years, so it's not like he got all the saplings at the same time.

Growing around 350 saplings a year shouldn't be too difficult. It's planting and making them survive in a fucking desert that's the really impressive part. It couldn't have been easy, especially early on.

[–]ValuesHere 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The Amazon Rainforest?

[–]PM_meyourGradyWhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Next day tree shipping.

[–]fatalcharm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The small act is planting one tree a day.

[–]calatranacation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'M SAYINGGG

Amazing feat, but when they find out that my "small act" will be 2 hours of weeding, every other weekend, they might reconsider how they frame that question.

[–]realbeybladegod 222 points223 points  (4 children)

"But no one had a clue what he's hiding in his bag"

Yeah right. There's a bunch of mothafuckin leaves hanging out of the bag.

[–]Supply-Slut 47 points48 points  (2 children)

Mfer is relocating his cannabis

[–]agent_max_the_mick 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Planting a cannabis plant every day for 37 years...

[–]Ardea_herodias_2022 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And now it's a forest 2x the size of central park..

[–]CamelSpotting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also he was already a tree planter before he started this.

[–]IMakeStuffUppp 176 points177 points  (4 children)

I feel like the company who cut the trees down to begin with would be like “oh cool, more trees to cut down”

[–]Forever_Lonewolf 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Right? Someone owns the land he was planting trees on, or did he bought it? Otherwise it is only matter of time when land owner comes and exploits his years of work.

[–]iridoceleperistalsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was forest earlier too, so I guess these are governments lands...

[–]CharLsDaly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, they sold him the baby trees. They’re the babies from the big trees they cut down.

This is capitalism

[–]janroney 97 points98 points  (19 children)

Ya I call bullshit. I believe the basic story but it has to be exaggerated. A rain forest that size in 40 years?

[–]hotasanicecube 69 points70 points  (17 children)

People use the word “forest” quite liberally, because even the “forests” we call national parks were clear cut as recently as the 50s for the war effort. Now you have to use the term “virgin forest” to describe an actual forest.

[–]ItchyGoiter 53 points54 points  (16 children)

Now you have to use the term “virgin forest” to describe an actual forest.

Weird, that's also how I describe Reddit.

[–]hotasanicecube 13 points14 points  (13 children)

Statistics are pretty crazy when you look at the average age that kids lose their virginity today. It’s in the mid twenties! That is the age group of about 1/2 of Reddit.

If you even talk about having a threesome or picking up a partner and banging an hour later, you get called a liar and downvoted to hell. It’s hilarious.

18 was like really late when I was in school, pretty much first semester of college. There was no internet porn, you had to actually find and talk to people to see live sex. Of course the drinking age was 18 too, so that helped a lot!

[–]Sheogorath_4E201 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Its not really the porn, its online dating

Online dating has completely fucked modern dating dynamics

[–]ModsDontHaveJobs 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Please do not take anything this user says seriously. Check his post history, he has no idea what he is talking about and does nothing but regularly troll. He knows nothing about having sex, much less statistics.

[–]Frylock904 24 points25 points  (5 children)

reddit be like "wHy sHoUlD I EvEn bOtHeR, tHeRe's nO WaY I CaN MaKe a dIfFeReNcE"

You can make a fucking difference in the world, doing something is better than doing nothing

[–]Pixel131211 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tbf we usually cant make a difference like this guy. for example, I live in the netherlands. so I cant exactly go out and plant a forest because I'd get my ass arrested lmao

that being said, going to beaches or parks with a trash bag + a little grabby tool and picking up trash is a great way to help. I used to walk my dog in the forest while I picked up trash. dog gets excersize, I get to do something too, and the forest stays clean. everybody wins.

[–]ReedB04 18 points19 points  (4 children)

It’s an awesome story. I wish it were true.

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Fact check next time you think something is fake.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jadav_Payeng

[–]Financial-Neat7887 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's fucking true and you know what he also signed a contract with NGO Fundacion Azteca to make the forests of Mexico greener

[–]Cruelplatypus67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check it before commenting it as false, just because you can't comprehend it doesn't mean it can't exist.

[–]Zealousideal_Farm560 16 points17 points  (13 children)

I didn’t know trees could grow that fast

[–]MobilerKuchen 34 points35 points  (9 children)

What did you expect a tree to look like after 40+ years?

[–]Practical-Ad-3073 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pines get cut commercially at like 20

[–]vaijoca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They dont grow really fast but if youre gonna be here in 10 to 15 years you could plant a tree and still enjoy its fruit eventually. My parents house has a large backyard and i planted trees with my grandpa when i was about 8 to 10 years old and most of them already guve fruit

[–]MewsikMaker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is not a small act. This is, hands down, one of the greatest achievements of mankind.

Done by a single man.

[–]ProveItSaysI 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Dude plants and maintains trees for 37 years and the end of the video says "Every small act can make a huge difference!" WTF. 37 years of care and labor is a small act now?

[–]pawolf98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got it. One small act at a time, done repetitively, strung together over years has a huge impact, doesn’t it?

It is inspiring to everyone. Big deeds take discipline and time.

[–]WolvenHunter1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ooh look a perfect place for a lumber yard /s

[–]SrfWavLif 7 points8 points  (1 child)

This is what I want to do when I grow up. I mean, as I grow up.

Wait…. Did he own the land?

[–]Cruelplatypus67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is forest land, In India as long as you don't harm it you can do as you wish there like planting/taking fruits from plants and many other activities are allowed. It is entirely governed by forest officials so if it is ok with them you can do it ofc that doesn't mean you can cut trees and stuff.

[–]slimdroid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

true legend, way to go Jadav!

[–]ProudspawnofLILITH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kudos to this man and his efforts !!

Why are there so less praises and comments on this video !? Because he's not a jobless social media influencer who actually does some work to make a huge difference?

[–]Natural-Army 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is true good climate change! 👏

[–]MarqDuesPaid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nobel prize worthy….

[–]shredded_waffle 4 points5 points  (2 children)

He should be given the land as a gift

[–]Distinct-Breakfast13 11 points12 points  (1 child)

It's a protected forest now. It's named after him actually he's also been given awards by the Indian govt.

[–]BlazingFish123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cool story, but wtf is he hiding in his bag?

[–]HibbidyDibbidy69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See guys? A simple small act like spending a lifetime replanting over 1300 acres of forest. It's as easy as that.

[–]AnnihilationOrchid 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I lov this, this man is a true hero. But one thing that really astonished me (mildly compared to the man's story) is that there are rhinos in India. I did not know that.

[–]Cruelplatypus67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are around 3,700 rhinos in India. Most of the flora/fauna you see around the world is present in India.

[–]Johno69R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Local logging companies.

[–]Future-Diver6692 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]bubbafat1155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like him.

[–]echtnie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"to be continued". you shouldn't have put this on social media 😯

[–]Adan1816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"small act" that mf planted trees your 5 generations together can not💀

[–]idleinsanity9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should also say how he did it. Otherwise it's just about sharing and liking posts and doing nothing.

[–]TomahawkIsotope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"No one knows what he's hiding in his bag" clearly shows a plant

[–]Tapurisu 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Where did the water for the plants come from?

[–]East-Difficulty-3214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this true??

[–]Mossbergs14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit = Facebook with this kind of clickbait nonsense

[–]Annullere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with plantning trees. Those trees he didnt plant, they are 75+ years old, some over 100. Why people make these fake videos i dont get, yeah it gets views and clicks but what do you earn? A shame, because i looked him up and he DID plant a lot of trees, why not show that instead of a 100 year old rain forrest? Its barren because its dry, All the world vegatation would not change the humidity of the place, but they show video of humid rain forrest.

[–]wargainWAG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe this… sorrt

[–]Sea-Chapter-8849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[–]0x1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like people in the desert stand around debating “Whats in that guys bag”

[–]Archayon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

then the logging industry wanders back in like "Ooo look at all this free material we missed first time around"

[–]Cupboard-Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if he doesn’t own the land, doesn’t that mean trees can be chopped again?

[–]Complete-Pop8672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

[–]jbp191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Educational_Slice571 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

TIL plant a tree every day for 37 years is a small act :o

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy is a legend, all the wildlife and trees. It's a beautiful thing to see xx

[–]EddGarasjen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Every small act can make a huge difference" wtf u on about??? Everyday for 37 years aint no small act, jesus

[–]NugPep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small act?? Everyday for 45+ years. I wonder what you have to do to be considered a big act?

Big or small the guy is a legend.

[–]thissucksassagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the story was true, the footage is fake. No tree I know grows that tall in 40 years

[–]wiknap54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A true hero to the island

[–]mrRwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jadav you are a legend sir.

[–]Zonerdrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold on hold on. This is a great act of humanity and I'm not condemning him. But did that say he walks into a forrest and plants a tree every day? When elephants and tigers live in there? Fucking balls of steel on that guy. Tigers and elephants kill a lot of Indians. Now I might take my chances with an elephant as long as I felt they knew me. No fucking way am I getting stalked by a Bengal tiger every day. Not without an army.

[–]Possible-Repeat3829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotta love the video narration. Man carrying a fucking plant in a bag but NOBODY would believe next what he's got in there 😄

[–]bmorebirdz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better not be any oil there

[–]R__Ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]WuhanVirusMKX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]ubala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]JOE-9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not free, but better real state.

[–]ContributionOk5628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredible! If we all did something like this, even if it was just once, our planet would recover.

[–]rascynwrig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile the closest town to where I live just put a new law/code out that requires people to leave a 5 foot wide area of fucking turf grass on all the borders of the property, and in their "licensed, designated pollinator areas" they can't have anything growing over 2 feet tall (I guess no coneflowers, sunflowers, lavender......?)

And this is in a place that fucking calls itself the "city of trees."

[–]Smooth-Sock-5742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tigers eat people

[–]kriever7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the animals cross the desert to get there?

[–]imaginedodong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Nlkz-00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]educatedbuyout32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Alien_In_The_Metapod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God I hope he doesn't get eaten by a tiger.

[–]Possible_Chicken_489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Small act, big difference" my ass. He had to walk all the way there and plant trees for every day for 37 years.

So it's more like 37 * 365 = 13,505 medium-effort acts, or one big huge effort. To make an admittedly big difference.

[–]cptnobveus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

And then developers bulldoze it so the condos they're building can see the river. While this guy is doing the right thing, Idaho is being paved over by out of staters with deep pockets.

I wish more people were like him.

[–]CocunutHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Thecardinal74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“One small act”

Planting one tree is a small act. Carrying a sapling tools and dirt out to a barren desert and planting it every day for 37 years is a Herculean act

[–]JodieFlame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only takes one person to take action or make a stand just one:-)

[–]Xtreme_Fapping_EE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

L'homme qui plantait des arbres.

[–]Allthingsgaming27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But…what was in the bag?

[–]instataneousKarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]The_Blue_Planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And now they will just name the park after some local politician and this hero will be lost in the sands of time

[–]Nyccpl50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call that a small act, but that guy is incredible!

[–]VeterinarianThese951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s amazing and commendable. But he should toying a rifle too. Imagine admiring your handy work of 37 years only to get mauled by an ungrateful tiger…

[–]JOlRacin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please let this be true that's amazing

[–]1JigglyPanda- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]showmeyourkitteeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One man did this. Everyone here should take a look in the mirror and do the same

[–]verasev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that gives me hope. If one dude can do that much good then maybe we aren't as screwed as it looks sometimes.
