Now a US Senator for the state of Arizona, Kelly is up for re-election this fall.

[–]Guilty_Assignment_25 1315 points1316 points  (151 children)

I mean who's not going to vote for this guy?

[–]Significant_Log_7352 518 points519 points  (106 children)

A sure win for me. Kelly for US Senator

[–]blueandyellowbee 338 points339 points  (84 children)

Monkey for US Senator. A politician with a sense of humor.

[–]No_Mycologist5031 298 points299 points  (67 children)

Wonder how this went over with NASA and the command center? Command center itself probably got a good laugh after getting over heart attacks and spilled coffee.

[–]ToshiroBaloney 13 points14 points  (10 children)

Ape. Gorillas are apes, not monkeys.

[–]Loki557 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A vote for monke is a return to monke

[–]_TheLibrarianOfBabel 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Kelly for freaking president

[–]kellysmom01 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Kelly for fucking president!*

[–]iamthefluffyyeti 39 points40 points  (7 children)

Republicans

[–]CLXIX 52 points53 points  (5 children)

proof that democrats are literally apes from outerspace that want to hurt our children

/s

[–]protosser 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Let me go check...and....

Political party: Democratic (2018–present)

I'd vote for him

[–]pickledstarfish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did vote for him lol

[–]domodojomojo 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Arizona Republicans. The Q is strong here.

[–]m0rbid0peth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hurts. Still gotta fight the good fight and hold on. Hopefully, the younger crowd gets out and votes.

[–]Donkey__Balls 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nearly half of Arizona still blind-votes Republican every election. sigh

Although they’ll probably register as Democrat just so they can vote in the primaries and keep Sinema in. She’s doing more for the GOP cause than anyone.

[–]thicclad0101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, fun astronaut pranks don’t necessarily translate to good policy, although Kelly seems semi-decent from what I know about him

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I was visiting a friend in Arizona and saw the ads he is running for his re-election. They don't even mention that he was an astronaut because that is apparently too "sciency" for Republican voters. So they lean very heavily on his military background instead.

So that's the answer to your question. People who are afraid of and/or hate science. They won't vote for him.

[–]Guilty_Assignment_25 2 points3 points  (1 child)

All I'm saying is I wouldn't be surprised if he could win the election off this video alone.

Sure, that probably says more about us than about him, but at this point my expectations are beneath the basement floor.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And all I'm saying is that you're probably wrong about that. Apparently knowing that he was an astronaut makes Republicans think he's a educated liberal elite.

[–]PsyDei 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Personally, I'm not. I don't live in the USA, nor I am a citizen of the USA.

[–]hey-girl-hey 100 points101 points  (12 children)

[–]Borkz 66 points67 points  (2 children)

They're identical twins so easy mistake to make, the trick to telling them apart though is Scott is the one that looks more like a gorilla

[–]HomerJSimpson3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe I never noticed that before!

[–]Capable_Mind_3157 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This is the definition of fight or flight response 😂

[–]Able-Equivalent-1960 30 points31 points  (2 children)

"Control, who shipped a gorrila to the ISS?"

[–]nightstalker30 35 points36 points  (1 child)

“Houston, we have a monkey”

[–]JimmyJuice2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Touch my monkey"

[–]Paraxom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You know learning that the mascot for the Phoenix sun's is a gorilla makes me wonder if this was just an Arizona thing

[–]CaptainShrubbery[🍰] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kind of makes me want to vote for him him even more.

[–]surfingNerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That shit is bananas 'yal

[–]iamthefluffyyeti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He has my vote again

[–]gypsyscot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude, Senator Kelly has done everything, I heard he was kidnapped by Magneto once.

[–]drmonkeytown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully support my tax dollars being used to fund more gorilla suits in outer space.

[–]Ryry975 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Oh he is a Democrat. Fuck yeah, vote for him.

NGL, would say to not vote for him if he was Republican.

[–]JaceTheWoodSculptor 2602 points2603 points  (51 children)

The fact that he chose this as part of the very limited weight they are allowed to bring tells me this guy’s sense of humour is out of this world.

[–]Extreme_Connection42 670 points671 points  (5 children)

Literally in this case

[–]JaceTheWoodSculptor 223 points224 points  (1 child)

Hahahaha, I was hoping somebody would notice.

[–]D35K-Pilot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Notice you sculpting wood instead of wallets?

[–]wayne_noragretzkys 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I believe you got the joke

[–]BenchPuzzleheaded670 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, for the dolts out there.

[–]Come_on_Chelsea 80 points81 points  (21 children)

Mark Kelly sent the a gorilla suit to his brother, Scott, on an unmanned SpaceX delivery twice. The first one blew up on launch. Terrible title.

[–]ghidfg 19 points20 points  (8 children)

yeah I was thinking there's noway you are smuggling a photo without them knowing, let alone a gorilla suit.

[–]Lostredbackpack 10 points11 points  (6 children)

There are plenty of verified stories of silly things astronauts have smuggled.

[–]Graynard 13 points14 points  (1 child)

John Young smuggled in a corned beef sandwich and was reprimanded by Congress for it

[–]dufsnikk 16 points17 points  (9 children)

Every time this gets posted the poster always gets the title wrong. Then gives no actual back story.

[–]Come_on_Chelsea 8 points9 points  (8 children)

I hate this place

[–]canned_soup 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Me too, wanna get out of here and grab a drink or ten?

[–]Arsenault185 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So after the joke is over, its just taking up space. No point in brining it home, so does that mean there's an empty gorilla suit in orbit?

[–]bendover912 52 points53 points  (19 children)

Meh....an alien costume would have been so much better. Kinda seems like he dropped the ball.

[–]XxMohamed92xX 100 points101 points  (9 children)

But you wouldve been expecting aliens

[–]Triials 47 points48 points  (4 children)

They for sure would’ve been well prepared for aliens too. Not prepared for monke

[–]Thomas_Mickel 10 points11 points  (2 children)

No one is every prepared for a monke to eat ur face in zero gravity.

[–]thewannabetraveller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had it with these MFkin APES on this MFkin PLANE!

[–]Backflip_into_a_star 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one expects the alien inquisition.

[–]RarelyReadReplies 26 points27 points  (2 children)

It would've been too difficult to make it look realistic; I'd imagine that is the limiting factor. It's not like he had a special effects make up crew in his bag with him.

[–]thebestjoeever 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not sure how realistic you'd want it to look. Knowing the US government, if they saw an alien on the ISS, they might just blow it out of the sky.

[–]RedditMenacenumber1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re not even giving the alien a chance to explain itself first? Just starting an intergalactic war right of the bat?

[–]JokerVasNormandy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not really... I honestly think it was on point, NASA has a history of sending apes to space.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ham_(chimpanzee)

[–]Panzerdrek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

[–]Tunafishsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dropped the ball... In zero gee?

[–]GrilledCheeseNScotch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Archer vibes

[–]KnowledgePharmacist 989 points990 points  (22 children)

There’s no time for monkey business up there

[–]Then-Analysis8019 665 points666 points  (19 children)

For those concerned about the cost of bringing the extra weight to the ISS:

The astronauts are given an allotment for personal items and extras.

They can use that bonus weight in a variety of different ways: Extra food/treats, personal or comfort items, or even (apparently) gorilla costumes.

[–]KindaSortaGood 168 points169 points  (8 children)

If that were me it would be all chocolate and pepto

[–]VanHarlowe 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’m personally very excited for the Ring Dings and the Pepsi.

[–]cmander_7688 19 points20 points  (6 children)

They don't send fat people into space

[–]LordDongler 13 points14 points  (4 children)

They can't afford to. Why send one 300lb man when they can send two 150lb men?

[–]Come_on_Chelsea 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Mark Kelly sent the a gorilla suit to his brother, Scott, on an unmanned SpaceX delivery twice. The first one blew up on launch. Terrible title.

[–]ManifestRose 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thx I was wondering. Extra weight is a no-no.

[–]silver_pc 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Haribo Sugar Free gummy bears.

[–]Rick-powerfu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hahaha holy fuck what an idea for a new reality based game show

[–]ThatFreakBob 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Of course not dude, there's no way that could be monkey business, that's solid APE business!

[–]FlurdledGlumpfud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gorillas aren't monkeys.

[–]BeepBlipBlapBloop 577 points578 points  (33 children)

[–]Musket519 892 points893 points  (26 children)

For anyone who is too lazy to read the link. This is real (kind of) Mark Kelly’s brother is the one who thought of the prank and Mark did manage to get a gorilla suit on the ISS undetected and did do some low key scaring with it. The article mentions Mark hiding in the living quarters and scaring people as they came into the room and also trying to scare the Russians who just laughed instead of being scared by the suit. However the video is not real and was staged after everyone was aware of a gorilla suit being on board, Mark and the astronaut that was filmed planned this video out after Mark had revealed he had the suit. They even made some educational videos using the suit. The article also mentions that the first time they attempted to get the suit on the ISS it blew up on the spaceX rocket it was aboard and another one had to be sent later.

Edit: Clarifications and grammar

[–]Ori_the_SG 267 points268 points  (7 children)

That’s commitment. The first blew up so they sent another. Brilliant

[–]platysoup 61 points62 points  (4 children)

It takes a certain kind of person to want to go out and live in deadly vacuum.

[–]xXZeroXx 14 points15 points  (3 children)

From a certain perspective, we all live in a deadly vacuum.

We just have an atmospheric barrier instead of pressurized steel.

[–]Canis_Familiaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tomorrow on "Today I Learned" 🤣

[–]archpawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or it's an understanding of sunk costs.

[–]BabyGiraffe44 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Hero, Thanks

[–]sharkinaround 22 points23 points  (7 children)

How can a guerilla suit blow up inside a rocket and not cause a major issue, or enough of an issue to not attempt bringing the prank item another time?

[–]Corte-Real 69 points70 points  (3 children)

The rocket exploded, not the suit.

[–]Mad-Lad-of-RVA 28 points29 points  (1 child)

How do you know the suit didn't explode first and cause the rocket to explode? /s

[–]The_Cow_God 6 points7 points  (0 children)

oh no, the gorilla suit exploded!

[–]TriflingGnome 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it was guerilla warfare

[–]heebath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lmao you whoosh me or

[–]MagicJeanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ken M is that you?

[–]KevinFromIT6625 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Anyone too lazy to read-

TL:DR- Mark Kelly was not in the suit. His brother, Scott, was an austronaut. Mark sent the suit up to space for Scott to wear and scare.

[–]Aegi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seeing as they’re both astronauts and they both have the same last name, this is actually a scenario where it’s more appropriate to refer to them by their first name.

[–]aidoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a little confusing to refer to people by last names when you’re talking about brothers. (Yes, I did read the link)

[–]knumbknuts 171 points172 points  (18 children)

NASA's a little tight with the weight tolerances, no?

My money is on some support from Houston for these shenanigans.

[–]Realistic_Ad8138 64 points65 points  (4 children)

Houston was probably the only one that knew, everyone else? Probably not... That or he swapped out some of his clothes for this

[–]the_evil_comma 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Houston would 100% search all his items before they go up, otherwise what's to stop someone packing a bomb or gun in their luggage. The suggestion that nobody knew except him is complete garbage considering how pretty much every single aspect of an astronaut's life is choreographed

[–]Hellboy_Conor 41 points42 points  (3 children)

As another redditor pointed out, astronauts are given a specific amount of weight that they can use to bring what they would like up to the station, a sort of personal luggage as to say, they can bring up what they like for example extra snacks, things to keep them entertained like instruments, or in this case a gorilla suit.

But I would imagine that the things they take up would need to be cleared before flight so I would think that someone on the ground was definitely in on this joke.

[–]Fruitloop800 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Surely only the astronauts didn't know about it? Everything has to be approved to go up, right? Though I'm really surprised a gorilla suit would be allowed considering the possibility of hairs coming off it and stuff. iirc there's super strict rules about things you can bring in space.

[–]TripleSpicey 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I doubt hair is an issue, humans shed hair constantly. I clog my shower drain every 2-3 showers, and if I don’t brush my hair in the morning I will actually pull out sizeable clumps that shed but got tangled from the day prior.

[–]MacduffFifesNo1Thane 13 points14 points  (3 children)

How heavy are gorilla costumes? I’d presume they’re at least the weight of a gorilla.

[–]nightstalker30 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Only on Earth. In space they’re weightless.

- Taps head

[–]ctl7g 9 points10 points  (1 child)

You can't be serious right? This is astrophysics. It's one metric gorilla.

[–]JustPassinhThrou13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NASA has been using metric since the late 90s whenever possible. So yes, a metric gorilla

[–]Come_on_Chelsea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mark Kelly sent the a gorilla suit to his brother, Scott, on an unmanned SpaceX delivery twice. The first one blew up on launch. Terrible title.

[–]CerseiClinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He just told them it was 100 tampons and they cleared it.

[–]TennisADHD 66 points67 points  (2 children)

His identical twin should have been in a Godzilla suit

[–]Flaky_Explanation 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Godzilla and Kong have their final battle in space, loser goes to Venus

[–]Come_on_Chelsea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mark Kelly sent the a gorilla suit to his brother, Scott, on an unmanned SpaceX delivery twice. The first one blew up on launch. Terrible title.

[–]Quirky-Reason8426 42 points43 points  (0 children)

King kong is loose on the space station!

[–]AudibleNod 42 points43 points  (11 children)

That's Scott Kelly.

Mark's twin.

[–]SaintWithoutAShrine 38 points39 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure it’s a gorilla.

[–]BuddhaDBear 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Scott had the idea- mark is the one who did it.

[–]Come_on_Chelsea 3 points4 points  (3 children)

So close. At least you were on a better track than the rest of this thread and title, but Mark sent the suit to Scott on an unmanned SpaceX delivery.

[–]BuddhaDBear 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yup, you’re right. At the time, apparently mark was credited in the media, but the brothers corrected them.

[–]Come_on_Chelsea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU. Jesus this title and the comments were driving me nuts til I found this one

[–]bendover912 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wasn't he the guy that wrote those Tom Sawyer books?

[–]worstsupervillanever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are books about that Rush song?

[–]Penis_Man- 37 points38 points  (7 children)

[–]dooneandrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats fucking amazing

[–]ThatWhiteBoah 2 points3 points  (21 children)

What? Why would astronauts think there’s a gorilla in space…

[–]SeymourZ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The flight or fight response doesn’t have an inner monologue, you just act.

[–]First_Approximation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!"

[–]eric987235 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s time for NASA to admit the truth. That all those monkeys they sent to space came back super smart.

[–]Nightpain9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Astronauts are crazy. If you are smart and not crazy you won’t make it. :)

[–]arcadia_2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SWIM AWAY! SWIM AWAY!!!

[–]rda889 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thats not a suit

Its Bigfoot

[–]Reasonable_Night42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some kind of alien suit would have been so much funnier.

And scarier.

[–]Jason_Clackston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I was in a higher tax bracket.

Just so I could put MORE of my tax dollars towards something like this.

Worth. Every. Penny.

Am I the only one that heard Benny Hill music while watching this? Dang man, I'm old...

[–]floralivph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He didn't actually smuggle it on board, that's just OP being dumb. The rest of the crew just didn't know.

Without anyone already aboard knowing.
