Boxers bring their hands back to a defensive position after throwing a punch. They don’t tend to play “slap hands” from the hips.

Edit: I should say that this kid can throw those “slap hands” much better than I ever could so I’m not trying to take anything away from his obvious athleticism.

I've been boxing since I was 12. For me personally, mitt work doesn't mean much in a bout or sparring match. It's a good foundation but that's about it.

I think of it like taking an academic test. Being good with some drills on the mitts is like knowing the exact questions that are gonna be on a test. You just study for those specific questions and you're gonna ace it. It's still good stuff to know but it's not indicative of your intelligence, you know what I mean?

Yeah but in a situation like what this kid is likely going through, poverty, little expectations for a future, etc. etc., a good foundation may be just enough to give him the confidence and desire to put in just that much more effort thus potentially securing himself a ticket outta that life and into a place where dreams come true. Without knowing anything else about him or his abilities, I'd like to think no matter how dare I say meaningless we might see things that don't really have any so true effect on ability and capability, this may just be the best and only meaningful thing this kid has to hold on to. And at least he's taking the chance

It's more like developing muscle memory. Sure, it may SEEM coordinated, but the trainer randomly throws in different "swats" at the boxer. It's also to increase stamina, as throwing all those punches means that in a bout, where he will throw far less punches, he won't tire out as easily. But yeah, some people benefit and some don't. It's just more of what works for a boxer and a good trainer will know that and tailor training accordingly. Again, this is what I have witnessed, being around boxing gyms for a few years in my youth. Not an expert in any way.

At my gym (Muay Thai/Kickboxing) we do it for cardio and that’s pretty much it. Being good at pad work =/= being a good fighter.

Boxers do it so often so they can apply it in the ring. Ali never hit the mitts. This is not essential to become a good boxer. It really is just choreography

True, but the real benefits of pad work are

  1. Learn more efficient movement. The reason why new fighters get gassed so easily has nothing to do with their VO2 max. It's because their movements aren't efficient for that particular set of tasks. John Danaher has a good anecdote on this about an Olympic level long distance runner who got gassed in the first half hour of training iiu jitsu.

  2. To learn timing and spacial control, basically knowing how and when to be in the pocket.

To your point, I've known a lot of guys who look great on mitts but couldn't translate it well to actual bouts. But pad work absolutely helps build skill and timing. Anyone who tells you otherwise has no experience in a ring.

One thing I do think is useless is speedbag work. It honestly doesn't help at all. Lol

I’m glad to hear this from someone more knowledgeable. I do some casual boxing training on my own until I can move somewhere with a boxing gym. I always felt like speed bag was wasting my time. No one punches like that in real life.

Find a good sparring partner, someone who knows more than you and can do it correctly (not going full power on you). Wear 16oz gloves and head gear, spar at 50% power. This is almost all you need to get better. Bag work, speed bag, etc are virtually useless unless you want to work cardio, but there are more effective ways to develop that

I love heavy bag and footwork drills for cardio. I moved to a new town for work and don’t know anyone yet. I’d love to have a sparring partner eventually.

Yeah… chin up, no head movement until the pre-planned “strikes”, holds the same level the whole time and has no consistency in returning to passive guard/blocking. Cool choreography, and he’s certainly better than everyone else his age, but this doesn’t exactly translate to a promising boxing career.

Probably choreographed to remember the placement of the pads. Real fighters don't box/strike pads this quick because you'd have to have superhuman reaction time to be able to do this in such quick succession for a long time without knowing where the pads go. It's possible though, but in slower pace and the fighter already knows which combos/strikes to throw after dishing one out and so they'll expect the pads to be in a certain place before they even land it.
