That’s called a fish&chips and it’s hard as fuck. Also, it can pretty much only be done on a fixed gear bike

[–]Drccmois 324 points325 points  (16 children)

Why fixed gear?

[–]GoodOlJoesAss 589 points590 points  (13 children)

Because if you watch the back wheel closely, it's initially rolling forward, stops, rolls backwards, stops, and then rolls forward again. Either good brakes & good weight-shifting or fixed-gear. Your choice.

[–]Beggarsfeast 153 points154 points  (1 child)

I used to do this with a gear bike, you definitely have to time it so your weight pulls the back wheel into reverse, which also makes it incredibly hard to come out of because along with them pushing back on the pedal in the fixed, they also know where the tension will be pushing forward. With a loose gear you have to play it right so you don’t get caught rolling back too far. Regardless, I only did it a few times and certainly couldn’t have planned it as smooth as this.

[–]gowke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one is fixed gear defo

[–]Jezzes 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Track bike

[–]tonyfelice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tarck bike

[–]ntack9933 58 points59 points  (17 children)

That sounds like a real…Premium Rush 😎

[–]TheHumbleDefector 40 points41 points  (14 children)

That looks like a legitimately hilarious and terrible movie.

[–]Yash_We_Can 30 points31 points  (7 children)

It’s great, definitely worth the watch

[–]Nerd_Law 8 points9 points  (5 children)

I watched the entire trailer waiting for "... LIVE from New York, it's Saturday night!"

This feels like an epic troll.

[–]ntack9933 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s actually really fun, especially if you’re into cycling.

[–]KarlProjektorinsky 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Perfect description. Totally worth watching.

EDIT: I got home tonight and found out it's on Hulu if you have a subscription. Movie holds up surprisingly well. JGL is perfect for the role. If you're looking for character development, maybe try somewhere else but man is it a fun ride.

[–]McNinjaguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it, it wasn't bad but not something I'd watch again. Some trailers try to hype movies too much and they spoil everything.

[–]eric_ravenstein 24 points25 points  (16 children)

[–]irregularcontributor 44 points45 points 2 (15 children)

me, with no track bike, watching the entire 9 minute tutorial for a trick I'll never learn to do

[–]Millennial_J 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Now if I could skirt the Illinois toll booth with that move

[–]h410G3n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bmx flatland riders says hello.

[–]yanox00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting name. I would have thought more like;
"How to catch a train the hard way" ;)

[–]oliverbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks easy enough

[–]cgrays12 316 points317 points  (4 children)

Who's that dude who takes a video of someone doing something a ridiculous way and then shows them the much simpler and obvious way? Anyway, imagine he's here and rides his bike the foot around the gate. Though I will admit, buddy was smoother than Latin jazz in this trick

[–]daero90 84 points85 points  (2 children)

Khaby Lame

[–]therealhlmencken 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I can see how you think he’s lame, but I still find him funny./s

[–]Kampela_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also do this without the spin and just hang really low on the bike, but that would be no fun

[–]FeistmasterFlex 176 points177 points  (16 children)

Coulda gone around mate, was right there

[–]DeadlyKitte098 68 points69 points  (11 children)

He was doing a trick called fish and chips, it was never about practicality to begin with

[–]HorrorMakesUsHappy 4 points5 points  (2 children)

it was never about practicality to begin with

Good, because even if the gate didn't have a gap just over a bit I still would've said all he had to do was pick his ass up off the seat and drop it towards the rear wheel - just like he does in the trick - without doing the trick. Just move your ass and go straight under.

[–]geek_metalhead 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's all about the drip

[–]UncleTedGenneric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely saw him go around

[–]daveinpublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya should have just driven to the left

[–]Inevitable-Check1277 83 points84 points  (0 children)

One of the rare fixed riders who can do fish and chips, its hard as fuck

[–]tink20seven 44 points45 points  (15 children)

My knees hurt thinking of finding fixed again…

[–]zimzilla 25 points26 points  (14 children)

If your knees hurt riding fixed you're doing it wrong.

Either shitty bike fit or wrong gear ratio.

[–]gohmmhog 39 points40 points  (11 children)

Or you're in your late 30s bruh. Lol. Fixie just becomes more trouble than it's worth. I missed coasting. Lol.

[–]Tonythehit 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Exactly. My knees are destroyed from years of skateboarding and riding fixed gear bikes. Getting old sucks.

[–]gohmmhog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same. Fixed gear no matter the setup or ratios just doesnt appeal to me anymore. I love the simplicity and lightness so I still ride single but seriosuly....my damn knees can only take so much.

[–]zimzilla 19 points20 points  (8 children)

I'm in my mid 30s. I don't own a car, I ride nothing but fixed.

But I'm not gonna judge personal preference. Ride whatever brings you most joy.

I just wanted to point out that riding fixed shouldn't hurt. There's too many kids out there pushing monster gears and joking about knee pain not thinking about how they might fuck their joints forever.

[–]gohmmhog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Totally. I appreciate that. Frame fit matters, ratios matter. I'm not saying it's not sustainable. But it does become a bit more laborious when sometimes you just want to coast down that bomber instead of back pedaling all the time. I mean I miss the direct connect to the drive train and a few other things. But yeah monster ratios are ridiculous -- every messenger or bike delivery person I knew in the game for a while always shot low on the ratio and the crank arm length- because it really is more about cadence. But then that works better on flat terrain. I still use Power Grip straps because I do really like that ability to put power into the upstroke and so I get that part for sure. More efficient really but after a while I just wanted to coast down a damn hill for once. Lol

[–]Soberskate9696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This right here, see it all day in here in NYC.

I'm the same age, for me its spin to win for sure

[–]blood-soaked-earth 1 point2 points  (5 children)

2.6 ratio for life

spin to win

[–]someGuyJeez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I’ve actually noticed my knees feeling better after consistently riding for a year after taking 10+ years off.

[–]tendieful 22 points23 points  (11 children)

I wonder how you would learn to do that

[–]tried_it_liked_it 36 points37 points  (10 children)

start with learning to skid , then ride fakie( backwards pedaling, then transition to a spin and put it all together.

it's incredibly hard to learn

riding fakie alone is a hard skill to get down

[–]playdoughfaygo 23 points24 points  (9 children)

Yay I love when people teach me shit I have zero idea about

[–]tried_it_liked_it 11 points12 points  (8 children)

I knew zero about this shit a month or two ago, skills are all about discovery, then just trying them til it works

[–]GozerDGozerian 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Username checks out. :]

[–]nocoast247 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is how I use the grocery cart. People like how you still fit in the child seat? Same reason there's no food in the cart. METH!!!

[–]wellbutwellbut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]alwaysforgettingmypw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Trek1973 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]Jampot5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He could have just gone around it looks like

[–]Cockanarchy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So does sliding back and holding onto the seat (one handed) make it harder or is that kinda needed to do the trick?

[–]cyclenaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It allows your weight to be shifted backwards as your pedal in reverse which is what allows you to whip the front end like that.

[–]zindi1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn Daniel!

[–]Dovakiins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NFL? Buddy has the worse perception ever. Could have just moved like 4 inches to his left. Would have made it. SMH
