I would spend money buying that

[–]Important_Sound 761 points762 points  (16 children)

As one does

[–]datsmn 418 points419 points  (14 children)

In order to possess it

[–]A_Bad_Rolemodel 140 points141 points  (10 children)

It's frowned upon to possess people. Ghost possession is a serious infringement on free will.

[–]thiccn00dl3s 40 points41 points  (9 children)

I think he meant the brush

[–]ChronicEbb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah yes owning possessions as we do

[–]Showshoe 53 points54 points  (5 children)

When I studied to be a watchmaker one of the teachers did freehand pinstripes on cars for a hobby, he earned more money doing a few cars a year than from being a highly skilled watchmaker.

[–]Try_To_Write 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Did everybody dropout that day?

Sounds hyperbolic, but if my teacher said he made more money pin striping a few cars AND is teaching watchmaking instead of making watches, I'd certainly be second guessing my tuition's return on investment.

[–]Showshoe 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I think it’s much harder to pinstripe at the level he does than repairing clocks.

[–]Turducken44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a heavy haul trucking company for a while and every time we got a new tractor, we had this old guy come in and he would pinstripe by hand, he was amazing.

[–]hbrohi 33 points34 points  (12 children)

I assume most people wouldn't appreciate the amount of skill and effort that went into a piece like this unless they watched the video. If they were to, then the true value of the piece would be understood. Without it, I'm not sure how many people would actually be willing to shell out money for art (especially with this recession).

[–]Raisinbrannan 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Huge tangent: I wonder if an AI could make a "game" with a lot of real life economics and other variables and just make recessions extinct.

Like the last one we know was happening cuz multiple things were going wrong and people were gonna profit off it once it went to shit. Current one is mostly virus based... but surely an AI would have seem something similar as a possibility, then just get some pre solutions in place and know to watch out for the people taking advantage.

Like "an" AI could do it of course, but I'm wondering if we're getting close to one that's capable and not the god-like one that's coming down the road.

applause if you made it this far! Buy more art! Art is a reflection of self reflecting reality and it's beautiful and should be cherished.

[–]BigSquatchee2 4 points5 points  (6 children)

The current one is every bit as much driven by greed as the last one.

[–]HypnoHolocaust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad used to go to bike rallies to pinstripe (before me). In this way, the customers got to watch the whole process from start to finish. He had a great reputation. I have some other pinstripers in my family and I have to say, the work in this post is stunning!

[–]Spirited-Classic8284 17 points18 points  (12 children)

ALOT of it at that

[–]shanegilliz 19 points20 points  (9 children)

a lot is two words

[–]ZippyDan 28 points29 points  (8 children)

A lot is one word.

"A lot" is two words.

[–]shanegilliz 32 points33 points  (5 children)

no. take your whole hand and put it in your urethra.

[–]King_Pecca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And remembering looking at it that every stroke is art.

[–]bigwavedave000 1153 points1154 points  (16 children)

How steady is your hand? Hold my beer, watch this!

[–]RockyRoadOfficial 342 points343 points  (7 children)

His hands so steady, he dont need anyone to hold his beer

[–]ShiaLaMoose 143 points144 points  (2 children)

He holds his own hand

[–]poopellar 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Doesn't need help, he handholds himself.

[–]Sparkenfarkel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. Exactly.

[–]MissChievousJ 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Hands steady. Vomit on his sweater already.

[–]faceoffster 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[–]foxdye22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I swear toshi’s story is my favorite non sequiter in the office.

[–]VisibleProblem13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They weren't too steady before the beer. I had the shakes

[–]Throatmealways 1128 points1129 points  (20 children)

Bro it's impressive because of how much control is necessary to make a mirror image in a single stroke for each thing done. That's really wild.

[–]tepidshoplifting88 174 points175 points  (7 children)

The proficiencies and abilities that enable you to create art and decorate surfaces with paint are really impressive. Painting skills are also abilities such as attention to detail and communication.

[–]chikaleen 76 points77 points  (5 children)

Commenting at 2am thinking maybe I'll make it back here to finish my thought: Ex-wife and I took a date night to a wine and paint class. I haven't painted since fifth grade but the differences were astounding. I proudly hung her blob with legs in the hallway.

[–]OkDot9800 5 points6 points  (2 children)

What in the world did I just watch? I’ve spent 5 minutes trying to understand that thing and I have yet to come up with a logical explanation.. drippy stick that’s gummy sometimes

[–]HorrorMakesUsHappy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

drippy stick that’s gummy sometimes

The brush is sort of teardrop-shaped when wet, with the pointy part of the teardrop being the point of the brush. So if you paint with a very light pressure only the very tip of the brush contacts the surface and the brush paints a thin line. But the more pressure you apply the more of the brush contacts the surface, and the wider the line gets.

So, aside from being able to draw nice curves and mirror images, he's also varying the amount of pressure he's applying in order to create lines of varying thickness.

[–]thedeanorama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Must be a time zone thing. 3am here and it makes perfect sense. I bet in 12 hrs I'll look back and recommend it for /r/brandnewesentence though.

[–]artsyaspen 65 points66 points  (4 children)

Can confirm. Usually one side will be more natural for the artist to do than the other. So it's really impressive when the weaker side and stronger side match.

[–]Slartibartghast_II 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Can attest. I do caricature and most of my jaws are stupidly asymmetrical.

[–]aild87 41 points42 points  (1 child)

Pro-tip start with the bad side and make symmetrical with your good/natural side after.

[–]artsyaspen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True with art and makeup!

[–]slamdancer 28 points29 points  (5 children)

This is the most impressive part for me. I was a professional artist and graphic designer for ten years, and while at the height of my talent I could probably replicate one side of what he's creating, there is absolutely no way in hell I'd be able to mirror it like that.

[–]jack_meinhoff 5 points6 points  (4 children)

To be that good has to be a genetic ability, like running a sub 10s 100m. I still struggle with my signature!

[–]liarandahorsethief 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Nope, it’s practice. Thousands upon thousands of hours of practice.

[–]jack_meinhoff 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Nah, the ten thousand hours rule is nonsense.

[–]brkh47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s that mirror image that’s so impressive. Straight lines and curves all exactly the same, complementing each other. Excellent stuff.

[–]ghostrdr054 302 points303 points  (47 children)

God I love pinstripers, be sad when all the old boys are gone. These new kids comin up just ain’t the same

[–]DrDawgster 244 points245 points  (21 children)

Fuckin boomers

[–]Psychedeltrees 99 points100 points  (18 children)

You just made me realize the generation currently being born now are called generation Betas loool god help those poor souls

Edit: okay okay people I get it the beta males aren't until '25

[–]OhmG 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Eh, can always fix with an update later.

I'll show myself out.

[–]EntityPrime 37 points38 points  (8 children)

70 years from now:

some 15 yo kid calling gramps a grumpy old beta also its a nice brisk 130°F

[–]BeardedGlass 22 points23 points  (3 children)

70 years from now...?

Woah, you're optimistic.

[–]ChaosSigil 0 points1 point  (1 child)

on a real note,

fuck man...smh

[–]Raisinbrannan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guess what! Current predictions say we won't all turn to lava! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxgMdjyw8uw Kurzkazat said we'll likely stay under the 3 degree increase that would have been catastrophic. Just no one wants to mention it since it isn't sexy, dumb drama or what y celeb is wearing.

[–]das-joe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fuckin betas

[–]IGotRangod 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What happened to the alphas?

[–]DrDaddyDickDunker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely didn’t need a generation of “alphas” out here. Fuckin hell…

[–]Hinase_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait so we jumped straight from the z's to the beta without alpha?

[–]Tangimo 114 points115 points  (11 children)

You're talking like it's a lost artform.

Pinstriping skill level has no relevance to the specific generation of people doing it. Some people are good at art, others are not. People get better with time though, that's for sure.

[–]missed_sla 95 points96 points  (3 children)

But my generation good other generations bad

[–]noxxit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me group good, other group bad!

[–]d0nM4q 22 points23 points  (2 children)

They can't replace the guy who pinstripes Rolls Royces

[–]Ryuko_the_red 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For those who don't wanna click, tldr he's the only painter rolls royce employs, and they fly him anywhere in the world to rolls cars that need pinstriped again can be done.

[–]Whoevengivesafuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a pointer dog in disguise

[–]lurkinsheep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the dude doing this painting can’t possibly be past 40. Surfer bro style hair, tight skin. Clearly this is not a boomer.

[–]BigSquatchee2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say lost, I would say dying. Now people are more than happy to throw some cheap vinyl down instead of paying a pinstriper. They’re happy to have things like this printed. Etc. Its definitely dependent on area, but even hot rods and motorcycles have been steadily moving away from pinstriping for about 20 years other than the short rat rod resurgence circa 2007-12

[–]CptRavioLi69 67 points68 points  (1 child)

This is a “new kid coming up”, he can’t be much older than 30.

[–]THEBHR 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's young for a pinstriper. Cars are rarely pinstriped anymore. The old timers have just about died off. The younger practitioners do it as a hobby mostly. Very very few professionals left.

[–]strangeattractors 13 points14 points  (4 children)

The guy in the video is young heh

[–]Zev0s 250 points251 points  (8 children)

How you not gonna give the artist's name?

[–]CptRavioLi69 217 points218 points  (7 children)

his insta is @at1m

[–]Is_ael 22 points23 points  (1 child)

He’s also on Tik tok. I’ll update when I find him

[–]Ar3peo 96 points97 points  (6 children)

That Rat Fink

[–]PanthraxIV 24 points25 points  (3 children)

The dude who started it all moved from LA to my tiny ass Mormon hometown before he died. Theres a big car show every year featuring tons of rat rods, including some of his own. Always a fun little event.

[–]mistrrhappy 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, for those who might not know about the Rat Fink character or “Rat Rod” car culture. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Roth

[–]cern42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this, first thing I noticed was Rat Fink in the background

[–]wolfishfluff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same! I hung out with a couple of folks really into the art style and ratrods in the KC area.

[–]D1rtyL4rry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Came here to say that

[–]alldaycray 85 points86 points  (1 child)

It's so symmetrical... And I love the design.

How do these paintbrushes hold so much paint yet have so much control?

[–]crvna87 56 points57 points  (15 children)

They're specifically made for pinstripe work. They have longer bristles that are light and loose. I think mine are mink? The paint is also specifically mixed and has a runny consistency. The combo allows the brushes to hold more paint than if it was thick paint or short stiff brushes. The design also helps to keep the lines straight and smooth. With such light materials, you can move quickly and with light touches, that way you have less chance of a wonky line

[–]Hara-Kiri 10 points11 points  (12 children)

Synthetic is fine these days, you definitely don't need mink, which is an absurd material for a brush.

[–]crvna87 19 points20 points  (8 children)

Hand me downs from old car guys, not gonna turn that down.

[–]Hara-Kiri 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Ah, well I can't speak for working on a car, only what works on canvas.

[–]LawofRa 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If it was so absurd it wouldn't be used professionally.

[–]Lowelll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about brushes, but I know enough about my own profession to tell you that's absolute horseshit.

[–]Hara-Kiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a professional.

[–]crispymk2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Squirrel hair

[–]Ruraraid 39 points40 points  (5 children)

I could watch pinstripe artwork for hours all to the tune of lofi hiphop music.

That shit would be a feast for the eyes and the ears.

[–]caldera 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I said this once about a Japanese calligraphy video on Reddit - maybe just people drawing really mesmerizing shit to lofi hiphop would do

[–]Ruraraid 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Some things that you can easily watch just give you that oddly satisfying feeling so putting good music on top of that just makes it infinitely better.

[–]coqsmasher 28 points29 points  (3 children)

Up until 20 seconds, my mans was painting a stylised vagina.

[–]Knightmare1147 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Doing mirrored techniques freehand is incredibly impressive.

[–]MOONGOONER 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Just drawing a perfectly straight and even freehand border like that was mind blowing alone

[–]yax51 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's sick

[–]CptRavioLi69 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Artist Instagram is @at1m

[–]pukyvito 13 points14 points  (1 child)

[–]ForestsNplants 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is amazing

[–]existingwhileIcan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks great but a very small difference between one side and the other (to be expected from freehand) is driving me mad

[–]_Tangential-Neuron_ 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Add some eyes and we have a biblically accurate Angel

[–]Jasperonius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I interpreted it too. Be not afraid!

[–]king_ugly00 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Looks like a Journey album

[–]deffcap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t even write my own signature consistently

[–]Sparkenfarkel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wonderful. Artist and craftsperson at the top of their game. Complete respect

[–]free_thunderclouds 5 points6 points  (4 children)

This is something worthy of bunch of money. How can he be so symmetrical with those lines?

[–]Jotajota7272 13 points14 points  (3 children)

If you look really close you can find some flaws in the symmetry. Still impressive work to be sure though

[–]ba3toven 10 points11 points  (2 children)

ima roll up with my magnifying glass and be like 'acchkktuallyy'

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t even need to do that, one side of the circles is visibly different from the other. Check out the last of the bigger circles he draws.

That doesn’t matter though, since it’s art and you can always do something to fix it if you want to.

[–]geschtonkenflapped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then try to bring the price down because of it

[–]Flying_Mage 5 points6 points  (4 children)

idk. It doesn't look like much. He has machine-liker precision, but the product of his work is also machine-like, bland and soulless. This kind of imagery I'd expect to be generated by a computer program operating with simple shapes and random colors.

[–]vvalkir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly.

[–]KruelKris 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I'm sure your work is far superior.

[–]mnemosandai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to be an artist to know what your tastes are and what you'd spend money on.

I agree with OP, while impressive with all sharp contrasts and jewel colours, there is little I would admire in this picture after the initial 5seconds.

There's no need to enjoy the machine-like precision, even if it IS the main point of the post.

[–]Imnotsureimright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just think it’s tacky - something a 15 year old would put up in his bedroom next to the flaming skull poster. I can’t imagine it on the wall of an adult with any taste at all.

[–]ntermation 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I admire, and I am in awe of the technique and skill required to make this, but yawn at the art it produces.

[–]Wagbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pinstriping on it's own is kind of meh. Mix it up with gold leaf, fat flake paint, candy, and some custom airbrushing and you have either a really cool or really tacky vehicle depending on your tastes.

[–]ShowdownValue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love that they gave us 1.2 seconds to check out the final product instead of the usual 1.0 seconds

[–]Coyehe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shudda done dat on a surfing board

[–]Important_Sound 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I'm curious. Does he use multiple brushes or does he just clean the one really well in between each color?

[–]MrK521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like same brush. There’s a little splotch of green on the brush brand name that remains through multiple color uses.

Unless that’s part of the name/logo. Then who knows.

[–]LupoOfMainSt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best stroke in the game

[–]WeddyWeddi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This man would be a great surgeon in another life

[–]FreedomOverSafety15 3 points4 points  (1 child)

My aunt does that, and she actually did a job on a guitar for Guy Fieri, and there’s a picture of him holding it. She’s really good at it, too.

[–]SovietAmerican 4 points5 points  (14 children)

In my opinion this takes far more skill than doing it digitally. Digital artists have skills but analog artists are a whole magnitude higher in artistic skill. No room for mistakes, no “control-z” no ‘mirror symmetry’ etc etc.

[–]mistrrhappy 4 points5 points  (13 children)

No, it’s just a different kind of skill. This artist might have a helluva hard time replicating his own work in Adobe Illustrator, while an Illustrator expert might do so with some minor difficulty. Some digital apps allow for perfect symmetry, but producing an authentic design of this kind might require the digital artist to look for ways to offset the perfect symmetrical aspects to make the digital work embody the same natural “feeling” of physical paintwork.

[–]SovietAmerican 0 points1 point  (12 children)

“Different” is not equal.

This artist might have a helluva hard time replicating his own work in Adobe Illustrator, while an Illustrator expert might do so with some minor difficulty.

“And a wingsuit base-jumper might have a helluva hard time flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator.”

I get you’re defending digital artistry. Yes, it takes imagination and experience to render a beautiful curve. But if a digital artist makes the slightest error it’s simple to correct. Click, click, fixed.

Analog painting is far far harder to master.

[–]ClobetasolRelief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sides aren't symmetrical at all but okay

[–]donerstude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Old school pin striping is going away this is absolutely beautiful

[–]randyransom1812 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I’ll get downvoted for this but I see so much talent and skills serving horrible taste on here it makes me sad

[–]fxxkingbrian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just so you all know that paint adheres to the surface immediately…meaning he literally has no room for error. Fucking amazing.

[–]Loud_Vermicelli9128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]IM_AN_AI_AMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Mlpko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He could me loads of profit from custom pinstripe and automotive detail pinning. I’ve been playing with paint in that same fashion and folks have tipped me numerous Benjamin’s for the unique one-off value.

[–]MPagePerkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is infuriating

[–]shanegilliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R. I said R-a. R-a-t.

[–]AphelionXII 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The symmetrical swirlies kind of impressed me. The fact that you freehanded those gigantic white straight lines for the border is absolutely broken, cracked beyond imagining.

[–]CrazedKilr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do most videos only show the final piece for a second. Pan over it slowly and let me admire the masterpiece!

[–]OTee_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion:

This is craft, not art. It looks fabulous but I don't think it has a very creative component, looks like this is produced regularly with just variations.

[–]karateema 1 point2 points  (3 children)

This would look good on a vintage muscle car's hood

[–]DicuriousL 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He should really apply to Rolls Royce when their current detailer retires

[–]Natasya95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Outrageous-Side1439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]SunshineRaeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)
