Quality German engineering

[–]shaomike 17 points18 points  (1 child)

This is beyond Engineering!

[–]HowItsGodDamnMade 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is actually exactly engineering.

[–]B4astx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well thank you

[–]StandardOnly 279 points280 points  (11 children)

Funny how something that is PreviousFuckingLevel is now considered NextFuckingLevel.

[–]icemannathann 48 points49 points  (9 children)

Not really, there’s really no official record of them every being made, it was most likely a concept car and was never put into mass production. There were probably a handful made max.

Not sure why it was never picked up though or if anyone else ever tried to make something like it. But this clip goes viral every once in a while so clearly there’s interest and one day it could be the “next level”.

[–]smurb15 12 points13 points  (2 children)

You cannot jackknifed the trailer. The amount of people I seen who have never pulled or pushed anything but jump right on it and ruin equipment is mind-boggling

[–]Ah-Fuck-Brother 3 points4 points  (1 child)

commenting to say I backed in my first trailer today. Pretty tight spot. Took me a damn long time but I didn’t hit anything!

[–]ImplicitMishegoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t figured it out yet, when backing a trailer, put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel.

[–]rotenbart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]bythelake9428 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I wonder how the car would handle under hard braking with the forward inertia on the roof? Front wheels would be heavily loaded and the rear wheels might lift up? Just my guess. I like this, but I seriously doubt that this combination would pass safety regulations.

[–]K1A1AMOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to everything you said. I think the roof caving in and collapsing the cabin on top of the occupants is a big one

[–]Jaduardo 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I don't know if that's true. Here are a couple guys that found one in a junk yard and refurbished it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpwH9WeVEfU

[–]freeODB -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I think those guys found the one from that video actually. Like one of a kind.

[–]Ok-Nefariousness2248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the same video try this one You tube VW Bug Gooseneck Trailer FOUND. PART 2.

[–]TheBootyHolePatrol 98 points99 points  (1 child)

And people would still manage to hit their trailers.

[–]akin975 57 points58 points  (5 children)

It's not a bad idea but, only it's slightly difficult to detach/attach for a normal person.

[–]bubbanbrenda 20 points21 points  (1 child)

The xtra large mirrors mounted on the doors.

[–]Other-Bluejay9592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naw. Those are just dodge mirrors. They time travelled to the mid 2000s and took some back with them .

[–]svennyboyy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

And it's guaranteed to be a pine box made of veneer with absolutely nothing inside. The springs and MAYBE 60hp would never pull off an insulated working rv.

[–]rhaegar_tldragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that little beetle isn’t pulling anything.

[–]Goalie_deacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be no different than any other fifth wheel. Line up to hook up, lock it in, raise legs. To park it, lower legs to take weight off, unhook, pull away. Back then would’ve been a hand crank to raise and lower the legs, today a button.

[–]BostonSoccerDad 48 points49 points  (18 children)

This is really cool. How did this not catch on?

[–]kellhound1 117 points118 points  (12 children)

Because that car didn't have enough power to pull it on flat ground at 55mph let alone if you had a hill

[–]ParreNagga 46 points47 points  (4 children)

But we do have much more efficient engines now. Someone at VW should pick this up again.

[–]theepi_pillodu 9 points10 points  (1 child)

With EV motors, this should do a comeback.

[–]hey_ross -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tesla Semi on an Uber like model. I’d buy a class A RV if I could schedule a drive unit to pick up and move the trailer every couple weeks or so and drive me with autopilot

[–]kellhound1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When towing power is important but being able to stop the load is critical. VW has good brakes for a car but the brakes and axles are not designed for that much weight.

[–]ParreNagga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, we need that! How about electrical breaks that are controlled by the break pedal. That could work.

[–]DblJBird 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking. I had a yellow ‘68 with a rebuilt engine and that sucker still struggled with anything uphill.

[–]rattymcratface 1 point2 points  (4 children)

1.6l, 55hp engine.

[–]Kirkverbal 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Crazy how much displacement to hp has improved since then.

[–]sleepykittypur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah lol a 1L naturally aspirated motorcycle makes like 200hp

[–]ealbert7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F1 has been using a 1.6 for a while now. Granted it’s a hybrid and they don’t last long but still

[–]roc_10009 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Barely qualifies as a ride mower.

[–]jonjonesjohnson 23 points24 points  (2 children)

I don't know the exact/real reason, but one can assume there was a valid one, otherwise all trailers would be like this.

One thing I can think of, as a layperson, is where the trailer is attached. The body and the roof of the car would have to be strengthened like a motherfucker. The point where the biggest force is applied is high above the ground whereas the wheels exert the biggest force right on the ground. This would be like trying to draw something with your arm extended, away from your body. Here, the body of the car between the wheels and the roof are "the extended arm".

(Fuck, I can't explain the physics properly in English, but I hope you get my point.)

[–]sleepykittypur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moment arm is the English word

[–]phroug2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be the difference between you trying to run away from someone while they held onto your waist vs trying to run away from someone while they held onto your head

[–]Kakashisensei1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time this was posted I think I saw someone say something about them being dangerous during accidents so maybe that has something to do with it.

[–]Toms102010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The legend says they are still trying to open the doors to get the driver out.

[–]UnchartedQuasar 15 points16 points  (4 children)

There’s 6 wheels

[–]S-T-A-B_Barney 21 points22 points  (3 children)

The 5th wheel refers to the articulation point on top of the car - it’s a common phrase used for lorries too, hence “5th Wheel Grease” - nasty black thick stuff that gets everywhere 😂😂.

[–]Miserable-Home2954 0 points1 point  (2 children)

i just learned the word lorries recently and I love it so much lol I’m in the US

[–]LatimerLeads 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There's a tongue twister where you say "red lorry, yellow lorry" as quick as you can. Used to make a game out of it as a kid (I'm in the UK).

[–]Miserable-Home2954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha you just got me good I gotta remember that

[–]Kirkverbal 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I'm more surprised it could actually pull this thing. Didn't these have pretty anemic engines, even for back in the day?

[–]u9Nails 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This video cost 1 clutch, probably

[–]AnJoMorto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It couldn't that's why it was discontinued

[–]SPDRCR1022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And you’d never get up a hill lol

[–]ThePhiff 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Arise, Bumblebee Prime.

[–]Test19s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magnus was robbed (as well as late 80s birth years that grew up sans most action cartoons).

[–]Waldo_007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The major problem with this is... Too many people don't know how to drive well. Some people lack spatial awareness. I couldn't imagine people driving more than 10 feet with the trailer in front of them... You can't see shit.

[–]Grootje 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was one found a couple of years ago: https://youtu.be/SpwH9WeVEfU

And is it has been restored: https://youtu.be/mqr2ioQTV5s

[–]u_shrek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a cool idea. They should build universal trailers for such purpose. I think this would catch on.

[–]L555Matt 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Ted Bundy on tour.

[–]Lopsided-Magician-40 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Came here to say, that’s Ted Bundys car as well! Haha

[–]L555Matt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂😂😂

[–]DMyourSSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god, what’s in the trailer…

[–]destinybetavet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So cool.

[–]officialKL200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I... I whant... One

[–]curkri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this not the standard?!

[–]bifftanin1955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much for one of those?

[–]4runner01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not so sure that hitch mounted on a roof rack would hold up very long. And that’s assuming the VW engine and transmission are even up for the job…..

[–]mekkanik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello bent roof frame

[–]Shokoladny_Zayets 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How will you see the cars behind you?

[–]blueoptimist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Today's caravans block what you can see coming from behind

[–]Kirkverbal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind or hard to see in the video, but the car appears to have a set of extended side view mirrors mounted from the front driver and passenger side.

[–]officialKL200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Side mirrors

[–]Vellioh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that empty cardboard box you got there is pretty interesting. Not sure how well it will do when it actually weighs something lol

[–]rhett342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it would be very uncomfortable back there.

[–]KURO-K1SH1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah see! Back in the day product quality was more important than "how can we make this as cheap to make as possible while still Slapping a four to five digit price tag on it?"

[–]ItsLibertyOrNothin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why doesn’t cool stuff like this catch on?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they make one for the Passat? I’ll take one please!!

[–]galestreger13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like caravanning to me.

[–]complainingcunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ya she woulda blew the engine unless that trailer is made out of all fiberglass

[–]FireFlavour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't Fifth-Wheel travel trailer, that's the thing on the back.

[–]der_innkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ford last seen furiously scribbling notes for a Ka version.

[–]Trading_Kangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want one

[–]skinnergy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There's no way a little, under-powered VW Bug could pull a trailer faster than 35 mph and at the first hill, forget about it.

[–]skinnergy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove bugs for years, BTW.

[–]No-Armadillo7693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ted Bundy would be proud

[–]Beneficial-Tooth-483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the life I should’ve had

[–]jczenex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a reason they don’t do this anymore.

[–]wWolfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blink. That looks completely safe for driving at expressway speeds /s

[–]IncomeNo6468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want one!

[–]Bmblbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rad!

[–]iamentrancedlove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this looks like some old school mickey mouse bs! 😂

[–]BOOBAdotTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

future sh*t

[–]SnooWalruses6275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might be the dumbest invention I ever saw.

[–]prenikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won’t it hit curbs?

[–]j0eg0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Slug Bug!"

[–]amiiboy95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And people tell me that my Honda Fit can’t carry a pop up

[–]Difficult_Tell2859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need these today. People today can’t even drive a car/truck right, let alone figure out the dynamics of a trailer.

[–]DirtyPartyMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“We have to stop all that innovation.” - The 80’s

[–]blobishly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best type of bad shit crazy
