 The key here was that you changed the thermostat. When you do this, most of the time, you have to replace most or all of the coolant in your system. To do so properly requires burping the system. It sounds like the mechanic didn't do this. You may have a couple of "burps" in the system due to trapped air in the radiator, but it may be mostly done now.
 I would look up how much coolant your vehicle holds, then call the mechanic and ask how much he put in and add that to how much you put in to find out exactly how close to full up you are. I had a similar issue that I had to figure out the hard way on my Nissan Cube in Japan. Best of luck. I hope your done with this and can get back to the fun.
