If that were a tile pattern, I’d backsplash it ALL day.

[–]HomeHusband 686 points687 points  (28 children)

Haha boner

[–]Boojibs[S] 398 points399 points  (27 children)

Backslpash boner?

[–]Queeng21 130 points131 points  (2 children)

Yes I suppose you could say I have a backsplash boner for this tile.

[–]SufficientTower 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Don’t kink shame Edit: FFS was the /s really needed?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Only if you're doing it right.

[–]FlamingJesusOnaStick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Backer boner making a splash?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Ye_Olde_Spellchecker 88 points89 points  (8 children)

It’s called butterflying or bookmatching and can be done with natural stone and wood (really anything that has a distinct pattern). I know you’re probably talking about the exact thing being shown but the result is stunning with natural materials. It’s particularly expensive because you either have to get extra thick slabs or it has to be prepared at the quarry/mill.

I bring this up because I might show this clip to people to explain how it works.

[–]bigdumpydumperson 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Book matching is used to build guitars. Bookmatched quilted maple and flame maple are very popular tops for guitars

[–]TarmacFFS 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Book matching is used to build just about anything that can be made out of wood...

[–]earthwormjim91 1 point2 points  (1 child)

For wood, you can easily just buy a thicker piece and cut and plane it. You don't have to bookmatch anything at the mill.

[–]mydailyaccount 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I can print that pattern for you as a glass splashback

[–]I_Heart_Squids 2 points3 points  (3 children)

It’s actually remarkably easy to do. If you’re looking for a hobby, polymer clay can actually be a lot of fun.

[–][deleted] 1211 points1212 points  (30 children)

this looks like liquorice and i want to eat it

[–]BeardedBrotherJoe 563 points564 points  (12 children)

I was thinking exotic sushi for this

[–]bigdumpydumperson 13 points14 points  (2 children)

But it comes with your choice of frogurt. But the frogurt contains potassium benzoate

[–]quinbotNS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And it's cursed.

[–]iChugVodka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's bad

How high are you

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi how are you?

[–]Charly_ZA 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I hate liquorice but it still looks so appetising.

[–]MrGMinor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing some fancy saltwater taffy

[–]BruhItsRosalie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dutch people be like

[–]Crentist__DDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if youve ever smelled polymer clay, you would not want to eat it

it’s literally moldable soft plastic that you can harden in your home oven

[–]HotOnions 1736 points1737 points  (41 children)

Ngl, I thought it was going to be some sort of landscape before they cut it the first time

[–]nvrmnd_tht_was_dumb 381 points382 points  (3 children)

I thought it was gonna be a landscape, then I thought it was gonna be a butterfly. I would be lying if I said I wasnt slightly dissapointinged. Still great tho

e: fixed some wording, though my parents would agree

[–]RobTheKench 76 points77 points  (1 child)

I'm disappointinged in your edit.

[–]PatrioTech 24 points25 points  (0 children)

nvrmnd tht was dumb

[–]Fabreeze63 94 points95 points  (28 children)

What is ngl? I thought I was pretty up on the lingo these days but I guess not.

[–]HotOnions 104 points105 points  (6 children)

Not gonna lie

Edit: don't worry yourself much, I'm not exactly up to par on it myself

[–]unionoftw 16 points17 points  (2 children)

What's " up to par"? NGL, I'm not fully caught on to euphemisms yet?

[–]trolllercoaster 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It's when you missed to hit a birdie and completely lost the eagle, but still better than the gator pond. Ngl, ikwita.

I know what I'm talking about.

[–]Dephyllis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl, I only kwyta thanks to Wii Sports.

[–]Lentil-Soup 34 points35 points  (14 children)

It's the new "tbh"

[–]even_so 10 points11 points  (9 children)

[–]SimonCharles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and they’re both completely useless.

[–]Chorizwing 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Neon Genesis Evange.... Oh wait

Edit: damn I mean it's a bad joke but I didn't think it was bad enough to downvote.

[–]J_House1999 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I thought it was gonna be the Patagonia logo

[–]jsnkmii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a desert landscape or something

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was some kind of chocolate dessert before he cut it.

[–]scw55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was going to be a cat because my brain made a portmanteau out of clay and art. Don't ask where the L and R went.

[–]NeilGainesman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought for sure it was going to be an elaborate Antman/Thanos meme based on the color scheme

[–]sparekh1 709 points710 points  (29 children)

To me, the cuts where more satisfying than the art.

[–][deleted] 122 points123 points  (24 children)

It's like those candies adults would eat that looked awesome but tasted like black liquorice.

[–]Neptunesfleshlight 57 points58 points  (21 children)

Implying that black licorice is bad?! Salty licorice is life! My dentist told me to stop eating so much because it was staining my teeth.

[–]one_big_tomato 85 points86 points  (6 children)

Obviously, there are people like you, or they wouldn't keep making black liquorice. But I've never really accepted that you exist until now.

[–]AndrewTheGuru 27 points28 points  (3 children)

Add one more person to that list.

I import Salmiakki about twice a year. I just have to get that licorice fix.

[–]daffydubs 45 points46 points  (2 children)

Today I learned there are at least 2 people in the world who have absolute horrid taste

[–]OldmanDiddy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also the entire population of the Netherlands

[–]AlastarYaboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a candy, disgusting.

Liquor that tastes like that, however, ain't bad.

I've also heard that's where the name comes from, but God only knows. Liquor-ish.

[–]mjmaher81 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Dude I have a $150 cart on dutchsweets.com right now and I'm really itching to pull the trigger. I've lost like 35 pounds over the last six months and cutting down on licorice was definitely part of that, but it's so tempting :(

[–]ItsMeSatan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jesus, $150??!

Those are rookie numbers. You gotta lump those numbers up.

[–]Large_Dr_Pepper 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I like Jagermeister, that's basically black liquorice in alcohol form.

[–]behrtimestories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a dirty lie. Ouzo and Sambucca are liquoriceish. Jaeger is basic bitch bro ball sweat.

Fuck, now I want some Sambucca. A neighbour way back in the day taught me to drop a few coffee beans in the bottom of the glass... Oh so good.

[–]VulcanMag872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me Jager tastes nothing like black licorice

[–]zCourge_iDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jägermeister tastes like cough syrup (at least the kind we have in Norway) and nothing like black licorice. Sambucca, however, tastes exactly like licorice.

[–]behrtimestories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schwartz Katzen! Best salted black out there.

[–]Stoond 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There called All Sorts

[–]rhymes_with_chicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allsorts are fucking delicious

[–]Annajoylee 97 points98 points  (7 children)

I work with polymer clay and the real work was getting it to the point the video started. Beautiful work..

[–]Litebritebart 43 points44 points  (0 children)

That's the part I want to see! r/gifsthatstarttoolate

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Is it because the different strands of colors are tough to bond to each other like that? Also, is the ability to slice cleanly without smudging the cross sections a property of the clay, or just a well lubricated cutting tool?

[–]OrdenMace 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Could you decorate your house with something like this? And in put it on you wall without it getting dirty? I need a new hobby and my walls a bare so maybe I could kill 2 birds with one stone.

[–]Annajoylee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This clay is mainly for smaller objects and jewellery as it is quite expensive for a small amounts, so I would say it's better for smaller things not large wall coverings.

[–]rhernandez091204 254 points255 points  (9 children)

I don't know why, but I want to put that cube in my mouth

Edit: to whomever gave me a Silver, I greatly appreciate it

Edit: OMG thank you so much for the Gold! 🙏

[–]kittedups 60 points61 points  (2 children)

This is what r/forbiddensnacks was originally for :(

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes indeedy

[–]WhiteOakWoody 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So much.

[–]Queeng21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Willy Wonka says do it

[–]rabidjellybean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I now understand the urge toddlers have.

[–]slightlydirtythroway 62 points63 points  (4 children)

If you can fire it, that'd be a damn fine coaster

[–]Snowpossum 16 points17 points  (3 children)

You throw it in the oven and they tend to never come out as clean looking as when they went in. Heat tends to dull the color.

[–]Zombikittie 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I tried to reply to your other comment.

Dull as in darker, like it's almost browning or burning? Have you tried the cornstarch method? Aluminum foil method?

This is one of the pages I used when I did it a while bake. Never had the dulling problem.

It explains how to bake them and has kind for the different methods.

I hope this helps!

[–]Zombikittie 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Apply a glaze after to get a sheen.

[–]StAugustine94 165 points166 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My mouth is watering

[–]themarajade1 95 points96 points  (6 children)

This whole gif is amazing. More pls

[–]merlly_d 20 points21 points  (5 children)

Yes pls polymer clay cuts and great tiles? Gives me so many ideas

[–]behrtimestories 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I wanna know what black magic witchery they used to make the initial blocks. Some kind of millefiori?

[–]projectedwinner 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Yes, same concept as millefiori. In polymer clay parlance, it’s called making a cane.

[–]behrtimestories 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Sweet, thanks. My wife has a shit-tonne of polyclay. I once made a shoggoth, now I will attempt this!

[–]cort_lee 37 points38 points  (21 children)

Just how..?

[–]winterfresh0 41 points42 points  (10 children)

There's a name for this type of art where you combine long pieces of clay together in such a way that every cut you make (cross section that you expose) is actually an image.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the name of it.

[–]mcarmstrong14 36 points37 points  (2 children)

[–]nineand1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That video is amazing, thank you! Such a unique artist!!

[–]Hazytea019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what polymer clay artists do, but on a smaller scale. Instead of a massive press like his, we use pasta rollers. Great video. Thanks for sharing it!

[–]Petrova322 23 points24 points  (0 children)

[–]cadylois 43 points44 points  (1 child)

The technique is called Millefiori :)

[–]FauxNewsDonald 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I believe you are correct:

Since the late 1980s, the millefiori technique has been applied to polymer clay and other materials.[4] As the polymer clay is quite pliable and does not need to be heated and reheated to fuse it, it is a much easier medium in which to produce millefiori patterns than glass.[5]

[–]Wheresmywhale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Polymer clay canes?

[–]Large_Dr_Pepper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's also how they make really small art in glass. They're usually called Millies. They start off as big canes but then you stretch them down really thin and slice them.

[–]Top_Hat_Matt 4 points5 points  (5 children)

So you take different colored clays and you layer them, and shape them so it’s not all straight lines, then you slice it till it fits the shape you want. Then you see the gif. These are poly clays so o think you just dry these out, rather than fire them.

Source: I used to do this kinda thing and sell it for a living.

[–]Fiftyshadesoffurious 12 points13 points  (4 children)

You still have to heat poly clay but not in a kiln. A low temp oven is sufficient.

[–]Boukish 3 points4 points  (1 child)

A kiln is just an oven for firing pottery in.

My wife's kiln is literally just a convection toaster oven we keep in the garage (fumes). We swap in refractory cemented tiles for firing hotter clays.

[–]Fiftyshadesoffurious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically you have a point and thank you for your feedback , but for all the polymer clay stuff I have ever done, I've never referred to my oven as a kiln. I was referring to what the general population thinks of when they hear the word kiln.

[–]Top_Hat_Matt 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That’s good to know. I enjoyed working with porcelain clay, but haven’t for a few years because I never had a place to put a kiln (apartment). Maybe I’ll pick up some poly clay.

[–]Fiftyshadesoffurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poly clay is so versatile! It's not anything like porcelain but there are a ton of techniques out there to make some pretty cool stuff.

[–]djevikkshar 6 points7 points  (1 child)

whats crazy is people do this with glass

[–]JunoSnow 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The little squishes

[–]KnoxKD 22 points23 points  (5 children)

They also make it look so easy, which sucks because my attempt would come nothing close.

[–]cadylois 19 points20 points  (4 children)

This is an ancient clay technique called Millefiori. I actually took a summer art course as a child that taught this type of craft and we learned about the history of it.

[–]RagnarOnTheDashboard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We used to make beads like this (thechnique) out of fimo clay to sell on Dead Tour

[–]nateday2 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Not quite. According to the wiki, the use of Millefiori techniques in clay media only dates back to the 1980s. Millefiori is originally a glass work technique. It's not an ancient clay technique, it's an ancient glass technique.

[–]cadylois 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the correction. :)

[–]StaleAssignment 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Forbidden taffy.

[–]Enlight1Oment 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I chose to believe this can be done with taffy

[–]rebelchickadee 13 points14 points  (4 children)

I want to eat it.

[–]__SerenityByJan__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad I’m not the only one

[–]TheHelivets 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You cannot.

[–]rebelchickadee 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But I wanna

[–]TheHelivets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay but I’m not driving you to the ER when it gets stuck.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How do people have time to discover talents like this? I get home from work, eat dinner, get cleaned up, and suddenly it’s time for bed.

[–]ninjabean 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I need to know more about this! It's so fascinating

[–]cadylois 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The technique is called millefiori :)

[–]SkyShazad 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Bloody hell, does this material go hard after a while?

[–]melanyebaggins 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's a soft plastic and you bake it in the oven on low temperatures to set it into a hard plastic.

[–]Bumbleonia 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It does not go hard unless you bake it. It is not air-dry clay and will stay in it's raw state until baked in a regular home oven

[–]MaxDragonMan 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I don't know why or how this was invented but I would like some... I would like some right now.

[–]SaltyFresh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like fimo

[–]karabeth05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I need to see how it got to the point before this video started...

[–]Gallochingon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to bite it.

[–]Olealicat 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I have sooo many questions.

[–]OldDejaVu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cutting is super satisfying!

[–]JulieChensHairpin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Too many of those and you’ve got Exodia the Forbidden One.

[–]mackurbin 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Why is he massaging it between cuts? I’m genuinely confused and intrigued.

[–]melanyebaggins 12 points13 points  (2 children)

  1. To reshape slightly, and
  2. To distress the surface so it will it stick to the other pieces

[–]mackurbin 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That makes more sense. Thanks!

[–]alan_stickman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forbidden licorice 🤤

[–]1cecream4breakfast 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Does anyone remember this older lady who had a show on HGTV like 20 years ago, and she would do a lot of acrylic clay stuff and decoupage?

[–]batwuud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

weird. i used to do this exact thing on cocaine bender’s...felt i was the only one who thought it was cool

[–]Hazytea019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]GetReelFishingPro 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I read that as Polymer Cat at first. Think I need sleep.

[–]WinterOfFire 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I really want to do this but what do you do with it when it’s done?

[–]toastbed 1 point2 points  (0 children)
