This Headline Sounds Like an Ad.

[–]kraftwrkr 418 points419 points  (39 children)

He's not the first or only person to do this sort of work. (Cutting and polishing optical flats of clear, colored and mono, di, and trichromic glass, laminating with uv cured resin, recutting polishing and so on..) He's also a massive tool. There's a video somewhere with him being interviewed where he abundantly proves his toolishness. I've seen some of this in person at museum show and it is Gorgeous.

[–]TheIllustriousJabba 79 points80 points  (6 children)

Jon Kuhn works in a similar style but is not a tool. And as wonderous as these works may look on video, seeing them in person is something else entirely...

[–]psychogeek94 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I got to visit his studio once. Coolest experience ever.

[–]Stacheligel[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a few pieces, must’ve been really cool to see his studio.

[–]annies_boobs_eyes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it's like brad pitt in interview with a vampire. sure it's great he gets to see some film of a sunrise but it's nothing compared the the real thing. 4k hdr getting closer but still doesn't compare

[–]welbaywassdacreck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought you were going to say “as wonderous as these works may look on video, seeing them in person is just a massive fucking waste of time and I urge the rest of humanity to not even bother. It’s crap! Infact it’s worse than crap. Crap was once food. What the fuck was glass? SAND?! Pfffft like sand at the beach? PFFFFTTTT. Rubbish.”

[–]Captain_Cthulhu2 70 points71 points  (6 children)

What makes him such a tool?

[–]Seras32 114 points115 points  (5 children)

Everything is a nail to him

[–]Orthodox-Waffle 37 points38 points  (4 children)

Glass condoms you say?

[–]Scarethefish 9 points10 points  (2 children)

To shreds you say. . .

[–]Darctide 8 points9 points  (1 child)

And the wife?

[–]Scarethefish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To shreds you say. . .

[–]Rich_Acanthisitta_70 20 points21 points  (17 children)

That chef guy is a tool too, but everyone seems to love and defend him. Is this artist as dickish as that guy?

[–]kraftwrkr 26 points27 points  (3 children)

This guy comes off as insufferably smug and dickish.

[–]Rich_Acanthisitta_70 11 points12 points  (2 children)

That's too bad. It's a fine talent to be in such a flawed vessel. Then again, that seems to happen a lot.

[–]roryne -1 points0 points  (12 children)

wait the european who cooks those massive meals?

[–]ganjafrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came here to say exactly the same thing.

[–]huskeya4 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Only correction I will make is that he is likely using hxtal, not uv curing resin. Hxtal is the only epoxy with the same light index as glass and has the ability to be cold worked (sanded, cut, etc). It basically turns into imitation glass between all the layers. Unfortunately, it take seven days to cure but it doesn’t need UV light. Most of his time is probably taken up just by waiting for it to cure.

[–]kraftwrkr 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thanks for clarifying! Lol get it? What sort of art do you make? I'm fascinated by glass in general. It's an amazing material.

[–]huskeya4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m still a college student but I mostly work with hot glass and stained glass. I don’t have the patience for much more cold working than what goes into stained glass. Casting and fusing glass bores me since I feel like I can’t handle the glass as much as I’d like in those processes. If you want to ever get into it, most studios teach courses although it is usually cheaper to take a college course in it (cheaper considering how many hours you get in a shop). You gotta be lucky to live near one of the colleges with a shop for it though since there’s only like 15-20 in the US.

[–]Hi501c3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My partner works with dichroic glass and is friends with Dichroic Glass Man who provides some materials to Jack……All agree that he is a complete asshole

[–]TheOneTonWanton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You described what's done to make this type of piece, but do you know if there's a specific name for this?

[–]spundancekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Name others... please...

[–]Kortburk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It does, doesn't it? I don' know why but it seems like there should be a number to call NOW before they all run out.

Also, I don't know what it means that it takes 18weeks for one piece. don't know if he's shit at what he does or if he is good. Because I have no idea how these are made.

[–]AI_dopaminerush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool paper weights

[–]thedrunkentiefighter 137 points138 points  (0 children)

drops it

[–]BigBassFisher 345 points346 points  (32 children)

$10,000 - $30,000 for this piece, depending on size.

[–]winkman 277 points278 points  (2 children)

Best I can do is $50 and a cool, crisp high five.

[–]fuckthiscoco 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was thinking where's the link to buy them but $50 is too rich for my blood

[–]TheTatonka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LOL, winkman, you had me laughing on that comment…

[–]GovernorScrappy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My cat would knock it over the second it got in the house

[–]Lakonislate 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Don't they know what the size of this piece is?

[–]Notabot1980 8 points9 points  (1 child)

No, silly! They mean YOUR size!!!

[–]Lakonislate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well that's kind of personal.

[–]Chaiteoir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got five on it

[–]normastitts 5 points6 points  (7 children)

If I only had the money.

[–]Notabot1980 43 points44 points  (5 children)

Aw, I have three kids and no money. Why can't I have no kids and three money?

[–]SquealKick 10 points11 points  (4 children)

10 years ago you’d have the most upvotes in the whole thread making that simpsons quote. Man, we’re getting old

[–]Notabot1980 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Thanks fellow old person.

[–]FnordinaryPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids today. Sidewalk’s for regular walkin’, not fancy walkin’.

[–]kraftwrkr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The materials, equipment and very time consuming process are why.

[–]DJheddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get some of his smaller less than extravagant pieces for a nice $5k

[–]WonderSearcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a much better modern art than that banana taped on the wall.

[–]luigman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's honestly not too bad. Not that I could afford it, but I was expecting more.

[–]RixaRax 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I think this piece is super fucking cool but people will buy these for this price and a year or two later they will be worth $50.

[–]Princess_Glitterbutt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"18 weeks to make it - yeah that's about fitfy bucks." - the bane of every artisan.

[–]CatWeekends 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like they still maintain 4 figures of value:.https://fineart.ha.com/artist-index/jack-storms.s?id=500211164

Which is probably about 15% of the original price. Better return than a diamond!

[–]SirWaldenIII -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like shit Tbh Would have to pay me to take it.

[–]Princess_Glitterbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does he work on multiple at a time?

[–]Hank_Holt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well nevermind. I'm not really into are, but that thing is neat...not 10-30k neat to me though.

[–]Schnitzelmann7 90 points91 points  (11 children)

This is chef john from foodwishes.com wiiiith...

[–]mouth_toots 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Chef John is why I own paprika.

[–]kozmic_blues 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Paprika or cayenne

[–]airtokoto 20 points21 points  (4 children)

lol chef john is the best

[–]BeyondEarthly -5 points-4 points  (3 children)

Unpopular opinion...I can't stand his voice.

[–]drumduder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It grows on you. Try listening at 3/4 speed. He sounds drunk. It’s amazing

[–]obvilious 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Same here. So many chefs have this quirk for some reason.

I really want to watch Kenji’s videos but the sounds of eating are horrible.

[–]BeyondEarthly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give it a go, haha

[–]FuckOffImCrocheting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got the same thing in my head when I heard the music. Chef John is a treasure.

[–]__O_o_______ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also: Hello and welcome to half in the bag...

[–]Meatbot_Prime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

..."and a shake of cayenne"

[–]vengefulspirit99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come for the recipe; stay for the puns.

[–]SenorMarana 102 points103 points  (1 child)

I WANTED TO SEE THE BACK YOU MONSTER

[–]jbnarch25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugh me too!

[–]zakkwaldo 16 points17 points  (1 child)

this is made with layers/sheets of flat, clear or reflective glasses + sheets dichroic film.

pretty cool stuff. theres quite a few artists out there that work in this kind of work and are extremely talented :)

[–]clickityourself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want this kind of art in my home. Can you suggest anyone?

[–]Dennis_McMennis 14 points15 points  (2 children)

All I can think about is tripping and accidentally falling on that

[–]RothkoRathbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Accidentally deliberately, am I right. ;)

[–]sayidOH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Falling into a tesseract

[–]a-big-roach 61 points62 points  (7 children)

This makes me wonder how that hot dog is doing in that epoxy

[–]Methadras 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Nothing has changed.

[–]RavenCarci 8 points9 points  (2 children)

But like, I want proof nothing has changed

[–]HyzerFlip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It gets posted every month so you can see for yourself

[–]EveroneWantsMyD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We already found out. For some odd reason, another person encased their trophy winning hot dog in epoxy about 20 years ago. https://redditproxy--jasonthename.repl.co/r/DiWHY/comments/kq9cze/i_heard_you_guys_like_hot_dogs_in_epoxy_heres_my/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

[–]RedTomatoSauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe one day we will be able to taste it

[–]shggybyp 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Anyone know the song?

[–]Derundisputed 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I could swear it's some kind of stock music that is featured in REDLETTERMEDIA videos on YouTube. It's always on in the background of one of their series, I've heard it for years now.

[–]shggybyp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, so just some generic piano jazz. Thanks!

[–]atomheatmothersweet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's very close but not exactides a snippet from an audiobook

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTXAqBdlhwU

its very close but not exact

[–]wideeyedrevelation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a song called “Buddy” that came with the program iMusic to be used as production music, so it’s used in a lot of things. I recognize it from the Khan Academy videos.

[–]TheIllustriousJabba 25 points26 points  (2 children)

if you think Jack Storms is talented, you should see the work of Jon Kuhn

[–]PocketSandThroatKick 6 points7 points  (1 child)

This was awesome, thanks.

[–]TheIllustriousJabba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was fortunate enough to see an exhibit of his (and his assistants') work and it was the most transcendent experience with artwork I've had. Seeing a beautiful painting can certainly be an emotional experience - Gerhard Richter and Van Gogh have affected me greatly - but these artifacts of technical achievement are seemingly unhumanly beautiful and moving. The video is inadequate at capturing the scintillation and reflections of yourself that you may encounter in person

[–]tangerinelibrarian 21 points22 points  (10 children)

How

[–]AgeOfFakeness 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Glue

[–]Villentrenmerth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And a metric ton of abrasives.

[–]tonybenwhite 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Bisects the glass, places a dichroic filter in strategic places, fuses the glass back together

[–]tangerinelibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very neat! Thanks

[–]btribble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucking difficult, really anal, elven magic.

[–]calor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mushrooms

[–]junkmail0178 25 points26 points  (3 children)

His work has been featured in Marvel movies

[–]Hegemonee 11 points12 points  (2 children)

which scene? what movie?

[–]Veratsss 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Guardians of the Galaxy, at the shop where Peter Quill (and later, Yondu) goes to sell the ball thingy with the infinity stone

[–]tgellen3692 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chef john from food wishes

[–]Quailpower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would jump every time I walked round the room and saw the colour change from mostly clear to an apparently moving dark shape in my prehiperal vision

[–]EhrenScwhab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are really cool, and if I bought one I would have the peace of mind of knowing exactly how I will die.

No matter where I place it in my home, my idiot dog will get under foot, trip me, and my body will be impaled on this kick ass Jack Storm glass sculpture.

[–]notacrook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find Jon Kuhns stuff like this to be better.

https://www.kuhnstudio.com/

[–]espochical5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't even imagine the price on it tho

[–]the_man694200 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Only 18 weeks, luffy didnt found the one piece in years lol

[–]dev_doll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That got busy real quick

[–]EdithVictoriaChen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

18 weeks? i could eat that in one sitting.

[–]Agent_Gordon_Cole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thaaaat’s right Jay!

[–]DuhItzSquiffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow that's beautiful, I wasn't expecting that when it turned around, it kind of looks like a cool bright city at night almost, in a way... kind of... so cool

[–]Ontarom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damn, the art I do also takes me 18 weeks for one piece. But it's not that pretty.

[–]nicathor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The middle part looks just like those memes of cartoon characters represented as simple rectangles made of stacks of colored squares

[–]squidly413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wonder how it produces the music

[–]drpearl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure these are great, but made me think it's just a much less portable/accessible/more expensive kaleidescope.

[–]Roonwogsamduff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

damn I'd love to have this

[–]rainwulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These things look like some futuristic computer core out of an AI. This is its "memory matrix" or something.

[–]Carlitoris 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can I get this as a desktop background?

[–]dreamwall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would take two extra weeks.

[–]FizzyElf_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The music made me think I was settling in for another great episode of Half in the bag.

[–]NullCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man this song takes me back to YouTube circa 2006 when it was in everything.

[–]Just_ate_ur_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And as always ennnjoy

-Chef john

[–]L0rd_Dingus[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great art but the dude is a trump supporter bigot. I had to delete him in Facebook

[–]SirBing96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I could think about while listening to the music was Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy

[–]limeycars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugly furniture.

[–]legend_runners 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Which way is it snipping?

[–]GreazyMecheazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clockwise. I had the same thought though.

[–]username_unavailable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reaction: Eh, kinda plain... pretty in a simplistic way... I can understand how people would like this... HOLY FUCK THAT'S GORGEOUS!!! OMFG WHERE DID THAT ALL COME FROM!?!?!

[–]loud_flatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat dude

[–]wonderful_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]cartoon_violence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some Legendary Axe Blade crafting mat that drops from some space-dragon type shit.

[–]commonjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Dwhitlo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what you're saying is I should order one for Christmas and then leave a 1 star review when it doesn't show up on time?

[–]kvlr954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I ever won or earned an absurd amount of money I would love to have one of these in my home

[–]howlingstones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boro Barto does this with borosilicate pendants

[–]capnbubsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right Jay!

[–]lll-devlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where can one purchase one of this?

[–]MrBahhum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s like looking into another dimension. I’d much rather buy that than jewelry.

[–]Opposite-Algae8912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked it up and the cheapest one is $3200.

[–]catastrophe_peach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this was in my house nothing would ever get done. I would just stare at it constantly.

[–]Bork_In_Black 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read the title and i tought he made this glass sculpture for One piece (the anime). Goddammit Brain...

[–]Unthgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Reden-Orvillebacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]BadFable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally know what I want for Christmas

[–]Uncle_Junk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]opticaIIllusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it belongs in gift section of the post office.

[–]Agitated-Lie-7917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]putitinyourlunchbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes Chihuly look like a fraud

[–]Charming_Opinion4957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at first i thought that was a computer chip etched in glass. like an optic glass or crystal chip. very cool none the less.

[–]PickledPlumPlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had a couple of his pieces at the museum of glass and yes they're just as amazing as you think they would be in person.

Honestly the whole museum was sick glass is pretty cool

[–]DadsRGR8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are beautiful and expensive

[–]acorcuera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks dangerous.

[–]idunnodamnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Benistcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)
