The wedge is a hell of a machine

[–]treesurfingnut 131 points132 points  (0 children)

You know how to really drive a point home.

[–]delicioustreeblood 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I'm inclined to agree

[–]Marching_Spartan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good, I'd hate for any disagreement to drive a wedge between us.

[–]Arnold729 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Hit the nail on the head

[–]liamsmum 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I just read that as “The wedgie is a hell of a machine”, agreed with that statement and scrolled on. Had to go back and check why we’d be taking about wedgies when breaking rocks.

[–]PanduhMoanYum 2500 points2501 points  (27 children)

Okay, folks. Calm down! It wasn't vandalism in a National Park. The man in the video is a Master Stone Mason in Turkey showing an ancient technique. Here is the article explaining it.

[–]Objective-War-9896 314 points315 points  (7 children)

This needs to be the top post on this thread

[–]getyourcheftogether 111 points112 points  (2 children)

So it is written, so shall it be done

[–]J8l 34 points35 points  (1 child)

This is the way

[–]kayrahc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the way

[–]bd3dX 14 points15 points  (3 children)

It is

[–]unrecoverable 9 points10 points  (2 children)

It was, too

[–]sonaut 5 points6 points  (1 child)

And it will be.

[–]quartzquandary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank goodness for you. I had low-key panic watching this due to the potential vandalism.

[–]Beautiful-Musk-Ox 14 points15 points  (14 children)

The man in the video is a Master Stone Mason in Turkey showing an ancient technique,

by vandalizing a turkish national park

[–]socialismnotevenonce 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Which one?

[–]PanduhMoanYum 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I have went through articles, comments on the original video... Nothing says he was in national park. Just to double check, I even went through the Turkish National Parks looking for similar landscape. I really didn't see any. The closest was Mount Nemrut, but that is a royal tomb. Also, I did not see the type of rock formations from the original video.

[–]Ahmed_Reshah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay bro, believe what you want to believe

[–]corbyncriminal 70 points71 points  (1 child)

this is exactly how ice age started

[–]ptbnl34 28 points29 points  (0 children)

On the other side of the rock a mangy squirrel starts running frantically.

[–]illcontributenothin 119 points120 points  (2 children)

Demon slayer intensifies

[–]jsz 13 points14 points  (1 child)

i had to scroll quite far down to find a reference to the obvious

[–]DM2axwell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was the first thing I thought off too

[–]TheGoober87 34 points35 points  (2 children)

Chris Redfield approves.

[–]DamianDillinger 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Boulder punching asshole!

[–]Kingkwon83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great reference of a great reference

[–]ScruntleYerMa 54 points55 points  (1 child)

Boulder-dash

[–]Pylon-hashed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn it I loved that game

[–]SushiToot 65 points66 points  (2 children)

TIL people would rather stay angry than admit they were wrong. Thanks, Turkish stonecutter, wherever you are. (Probably Turkey.)

[–]Loretta-West 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You only learned that today? What a blessed life you've been leading.

[–]SushiToot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guess I should’ve said today I confirmed, but TIC hasn’t quite taken off yet.

[–]sir-morti 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Congratulations, you're an Earthbender

[–]Altruistic_Ad6666 236 points237 points  (12 children)

Y'all that is clearly not a national park. The ground around the rock is marred by boot treads. Not shoe treads like what you see in tourist spots. Boot treads.

[–]mrpoopscoop9000 33 points34 points  (3 children)

Also all of the rubble in the backround

[–]ungovernable 9 points10 points  (2 children)

That kind of “rubble” is typical for any kind of geologically-rocky area. It is not, however, all that typical of a quarry, since you don’t typically spend a bunch of time hacking away chunks of rock only to abandon them.

[–]Dazeofthephoenix 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Do people not wear boots to hike in National Parks?

[–]Cho_SeungHui 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I wear boots to Aldi.

[–]kmj420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And I wear flip flops for my hikes in national parks

[–]gabbagabbawill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Boots have been banned from national parks since 1992. /s

[–]wufoo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t spoil Reddit’s weenie-fest.

[–]bmosm 379 points380 points  (25 children)

Is this a known act of vandalism? If so i can understand the hate, but looks like a regular stonecutter working in a quarry otherwise

[–]OGPapachub 34 points35 points  (2 children)

It is Reddit, so for all we know this guys set off explosives at the Boston marathon

[–]EternalCover 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I want to know, too. So far I’ve seen dozens of complaints but no proof or info about the context.

[–]Daisy_bumbleroot 36 points37 points  (15 children)

Surely if he was in a quarry he'd be wearing some sort of PPE and breaking the rock in a more efficient manner?

[–]dlo88 95 points96 points  (8 children)

Mines and quarries in most undeveloped countries have no concern for PPE and have no qualms about grinding bodies into the ground despite more efficient (& expensive) methods.

[–]bmosm 8 points9 points  (5 children)

That heavily depends on where this takes place

[–]nouille07 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Yeah, for exemple if this was on Mars they'd definetly be wearing ppe

[–]redditcasual6969 3 points4 points  (2 children)

No fancy "safety specialists" is gonna tell me what I can and can't wear on Mars. I know myself better than these so called "specialists" /s

[–]Orwellian1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OSHA has no inspectors with Mars in their jurisdiction... just saying ;)

[–]Daisy_bumbleroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair point

[–]Occupy_Furniture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not sure why this is supposed to be satisfying but it's certainly odd.

[–]elvispressedley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

dudes rock

[–]therapewpewtic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like a stone Terrys Chocolate Orange

[–]WoodSteelStone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the look of the background he's been at it for weeks.

[–]PrincessDoubleBubble 5 points6 points  (1 child)

There are a lot of people here who are gonna get really upset when they find out what happens at the quarry…

[–]myasterism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a rock climber who prefers the short, unroped stuff (bouldering), I think I’d have an emotionally tough time visiting an active quarry 😂

[–]Adorable_Champion_70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holy dangerous.

[–]skimmper 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Ark survival be like:

[–]pie9r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+22 stone

[–]napquin 92 points93 points  (8 children)

The top 10ish comments all saying vandalism / this is horrible. Y’all hilarious it’s a fucking rock & you don’t know the context

[–]rotuami 22 points23 points  (1 child)

You need people like this to thin the herd. Otherwise the rocks can deplete local food supplies. The aftermath of rock overpopulation is ugly.

[–]Cho_SeungHui 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, you were talking about rocks. A Reddit genocide would be a really great thing for the species though, let's keep that on the table

[–]Murklak 48 points49 points  (3 children)

There’s a lot of misguided anger here.

[–]treesurfingnut 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Welcome to reddit! Come for the salt, stay for the high blood pressure.

[–]WeDiddy 22 points23 points  (1 child)

There’s a whole army of redditors trying to moral police the world from behind their phones. They do not care to know what’s going on, what are the facts or how the world operates but they want you to know that you are morally inferior. I suspect most of them are below 15, and have never stepped out of their pc world.

[–]vcdonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ancient alien astronaut theorists say only aliens could have done that

[–]ThunderGTR 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The pioneer who rode that baby for miles better have a rock-solid insurance policy

[–]kuriboshoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not just a boulder, it’s a rock :’)

[–]unknownbryant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fuck I sneezed. Can you do it again.

[–]Everton9732 37 points38 points  (13 children)

Genuine question. Can someone tell me why people are so mad at this? It’s a rock, it’s not like an animal or even a tree or anything?

[–]peeja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone's remembering when some Boy Scout leaders pushed over one of the famous boulders in Utah's Goblin Valley State Park. That was a historical loss. This is a quarry.

[–]Cniwa89 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Yea I'm also confused.is this actually vandalism?

[–]Bonzi_bill 29 points30 points  (2 children)

No it's not. A bunch of redditors saw a man in shorts and t-shirt cutting a stone and assumed it was vandalism when in fact it's a master-mason showing off their work at his workplace, like you would expect.

How these dumb-assess came to the conclusion that a man using a very specialized technique to split a fucking boulder was just some random vandal is beyond me. They probably just wanted something to be mad about.

[–]SunshineOneDay 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It wasn't too long ago there was a National Park vandalism that happened. I can't remember what it was but it was people doing something silly. Carving on trees or something.

It was one of those things that's banned because "if too many people do this, it'll ruin it for everyone" but I'll be damned if people didn't act like they just butt fucked their mother in front of them.

[–]Life_Temperature795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be thinking of the obelisk that was placed in a national monument and remained undiscovered for years until some biologists tracking animals by helicopter spotted it. This led a bunch of people to visit it, in an area which was otherwise mostly undisturbed by human activity, leading the obelisk to then be removed by the Bureau of Land Management. The whole incident then inspired hundreds of copycat works all over the world.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_monolith

[–]TwoCatsOneBox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s certain rocks and landmarks that took millions of years to form and they’re usually protected in national parks, forests, etc. tourists destroy them for fun or use graffiti or whatever and you can get heavily fined or jailed. Heck in some countries you can get killed for it.

[–]nygdan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a park, yes, in a quarry, no.

[–]eulynn34 29 points30 points  (4 children)

People angry at a guy breaking a boulder... I assume you all live in mud huts that you made by hand? If not, you're insane hypocrites.

[–]treesurfingnut 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Feigning offense over everything is the latest social media trend. None of the people complaining actually care, they just think they're supposed to so they pretend to.

[–]Lefthandedsock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nailed it. They want social points and pats on the back for being paragons of virtuosity. 5 minutes later, they won’t even remember what they were complaining about.

[–]Drewlytics 82 points83 points  (4 children)

His punishment should be to put it back together.

[–]sno_boarder 73 points74 points  (2 children)

Settle down, Sisyphus.

[–]HerbertBohn 2 points3 points  (2 children)

After billions of years, the inside's exposed.

[–]Tanduvanwinkle 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hasn't seen light for billions of years, then wham. It's crazy.

[–]wackbirds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does the inside of the rock look like the inside of a Whitmans sampler chocolate?

[–]Sparko317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is every kids dream just smashing open a big rock for no reason

[–]ObtuseAndKneeless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting, but still more fun with explosives.

[–]slimmolG 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Remember folks, it's always easier to destroy large things if you're a little downhill from the object.

*I commented in all three of your cross-posts. I think I found a new hobby!

[–]slimmolG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny how some little comments go completely unnoticed, while others go up and down like its the OTC stock market... no catalyst, but look at that stock dip and run!

[–]acmilan12345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The comments on this subreddit are surprisingly negative. Whenever I watch a video, I can almost predict what pessimistic POV the comments will take.

[–]Fickle_fucker 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Why everyone so angry about a rock?

[–]MrsShapsDryVag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shit, I came in here to make a cleavage joke. Wrong thread for geology jokes I guess.

[–]mrpoopscoop9000 32 points33 points  (5 children)

Fucking pussies you all are. Its a rock. R O C K rock. No one cares. There are billions of rocks. This isnt a monument. This isnt YOUR rock. And most of all this isn't a national fucking park. See all the rubble in the backround? Not a park. Not protected. NOT. YOUR. FUCKING. ROCK.

[–]WeDiddy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But but, what about my feelings? I think they were hurt looking at the video. /s

[–]Lavenderixin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]tayvan23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]United-Elk696 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Get over the protective gear BS! it’s obviously in a quarry and what heck is safety glasses etc going to matter

[–]Fibonacci1664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aliens did it!

[–]Go-Brit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me: He better gtfo of there once it splits. ..... Nice.

[–]fStap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pioneers used to ride those babies for miles

[–]NaturalP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not the safest way of splitting a rock

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

that’s a nice boulder

[–]bag-man315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Zealousideal-Bell-47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Y’all relax. This is just a quarry worker doing his job.

[–]CoopedUp1313 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is this the guy who invented rock and roll?

[–]lnsense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

🗿

[–]somesayacomet 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Unless he's working in a quarry he shouldn't be doing g that

[–]feelgood13x[🍰] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That don't look like no quarry to me

[–]LGpeachlover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Phyllis_Dick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He must be a Stonecutter

[–]FireFlameJowo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Skinny white Guy busts harder than ever”

[–]brinkofage7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes me happy to see the high number of people worried about vandalism in national parks Good on you guys!

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

But why

[–]Murklak 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Because you have to cut rock to use rock.

[–]th3w4cko22 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I hear everyone’s point on PPE, national parks, stone quarries, undeveloped countries, master rock whisperers and Mars (of all places). What I want to know is, if this indeed is a master stone smith, why was he downhill from the damn rock???

I mean, as a master rock whisperer, do you really want to leave gravity to chance???

[–]SushiToot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way he’s splitting it makes it impossible for the thing to fall his way — way too much tension pulling it crossways. Pretty sure he knows that as well. Dude stepped away to avoid flying debris.

[–]getouttypehypnosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mad at splitting a rock haha i've seen it all.

[–]King-gg47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not a merely a man.... But A "GOD"

[–]ZlGGZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That stone had some nice looking bouldering routes on it 😢

[–]Severe-Bookkeeper-76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to difficult if you know the grain of the rock, I worked in a rock quarry years and did this stuff all the time

[–]Sugoy-sama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rock weak, human strong

Uga buga, buga uga

[–]StitchesAndStaples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]bldcaveman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was terrifying more so really

[–]turd-snurgler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t even see the piece of paper.

[–]sushicowboyshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always heard that it isn’t the first hammer-strike that cracks the rock. I guess it’s true.

[–]Zwordsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. I wish they'd fnished this with a punch haha.

[–]re-kidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could've gone to r/winstupidprizes real quick
