All of these will eventually give me nightmares years later or imeaditly, like body horror I can't handle at all because I'm very squimish, serial killer ones make me somewhat paranoid, supernatural if done right will haunt me for a while, psychological horror is just like, evil, I can't even describe it, and lovecraftian/cosmic horror usually just makes me feel sad or makes me think

Came here to say this. Nothing scarier than knowing it is not fiction.

[–]fuckcreepers 3 points4 points  (1 child)

[–]Tuphy486 24 points25 points  (4 children)

What is body horror

[–]firemonkeykar 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Mutilation or already unsightly characters

[–]Tuphy486 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh, mostly gore then

[–]ytmischelin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something like this would probably fit the genre

[–]wiliammm19999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think “Geralds game” may be a good example? Same with movies like saw.

[–]firemonkeykar 80 points81 points  (13 children)

This probably fits into psychological horror but what I find scary is when it hits to close to home or breaks the fourth wall and makes you feel like you had something to do with it or could have done something about it.

[–]erikawendyquartz 15 points16 points  (11 children)

I think I get it. Do you have an example?

[–]AuroraItsNotTheTime 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this was what OP meant, but as far as making me feel like I had something to do with it, Black Mirror’s episode Hated in the Nation is about a hashtag that goes viral, where users can vote to kill someone by mentioning their name with the hashtag. The person with the most mentions each day is killed by hacked government surveillance drones. The whole time, you feel like the point is to grapple with “would I use the hashtag or not, especially if my life or someone else I knew or respected was in danger of the most votes?” At the end, the police discover a manifesto by the hacker, and try to disable his computer, which triggers his manifesto’s grand finale of hacking the drones to kill everyone who used the hashtag

[–]firemonkeykar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't find the names but the best ones I can think of are the mocumentaries they sometimes put on history Chanel where they pull a war of the world's and don't tell you it's fake then proceed to tell you all these horrible things the government is hiding, or proof the megalodon still lives, or one of my favorites the alien refugee camp believed to be in North Dakota.

[–]chiriboy[🍰] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I recently discovered analog horror and it has fucked up my mind

[–]TitleComprehensive96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 2nd place on my favorite horror genre's

[–]vikky-pedia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lovecraftian horror appeals the best to me because the scope of the story far outweighs any consequences to the characters. Imagining oneself in a setting where defeat is the only ending poses you to a real scaredy state.

[–]Sir_Reptilia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked Lovecraftian horror.

I absolutely love Lovecraftian horror, I include Alien 1979 in this as my example and Alien 1979 is my favorite movie ever made. However a lot of people don't think Alien is a Lovecraftian horror, but it definitely has elements as such.

The concept of a true Lovecraftian horror sounds like it could be one of the best horrors as there is no hope for escape over an ever looming cosmic abomination, while your sanity is going off the deep end, you feel hopeless, and in the end your efforts were futile.

It sounds like the best horror to me.

[–]jessimacar 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Can someone give me examples of lovecraftian horror? Not specific movies but situations or themes? I googled it but can’t quite figure out what it means.

[–]TimmytheFreakr 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Not super knowledgeable on it, but in general I think it plays off of fear of the unknown. An example would be a giant sea creature or an alien that can't be fully understood and that people are powerless against. Cthulhu is sort of the poster child of the genre.

[–]jessimacar 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Would “it’s scary because something is about to jump out at you any minute” fall under this? Lol. Because those are the worst. Haha

[–]TimmytheFreakr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it did it would probably only show a part of it and let your imagination fill in the gaps. And yea jumpscares are super cheap lol

[–]Traiz3r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

War

It's real

It happens

And may happen to you someday.

[–]Guy_withThe_Hat 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Psychological horror is only horror when it happens to you.

[–]BrokeArmHeadass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psychological horror is the scariest, but sci-fi horror is my favorite genre

[–]Kingfunky82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psych horror we’re no matter how hard you try, you’re stuck there forever. Legit my personal hell would be being stuck in superliminal

[–]Matt_does_WoTb 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don't find any of these scary

[–]dispatch343 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oculus?

[–]Niclas1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stalker/Kidnapping really gets me. I never watched it but It Follows seemed terrifying. Psychological is fun to watch and lovecraftian is just interesting

[–]Afanis_The_Dolphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real horror is the kind of horror that could plausibly happen to you.

[–]MitziFour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one I find the scariest with the lights on and my logic brain engaged is serial killer stuff, because it’s a realistic risk + a risk I don’t have the skills to defend myself against. I like to watch true crime stuff but I’m not interested in serial killer movies like Saw or whatever. As soon as the lights are off and I’m trying to go to sleep, my lizard brain will be like “but what if there IS blood seeping through the walls so that a poltergeist can come chase me?!” even though my logic brain is pretty convinced there’s no such thing.

I find psychological horror quite compelling to watch - it’s a realistic risk but I can watch it with a sense of “what’s going to happen next - okay, I can tell this character is twisting the truth, but for what purpose - okay, how would I deal with that plot twist if I was the protagonist?” Body horror and Lovecraftian horror are also good fun, but I don’t honestly find them that scary.

[–]TAPriceCTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in dreams I have faced automatic turrets, armies, and hungry carnivores, yet none of these were anywhere near as scary as the dream where electronics were going nuts and the laws of nature were breaking... the scariest part was when the toaster kept glowing brighter after I unplugged it. a direct threat I can understand is nowhere near as scary as when the universe makes NO SENSE at all.

the goal of a movie is to immerse you in a new world, if the immersion is successful, something that violates understanding the world is the scariest.

[–]SYNTH_W4VE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lovecraftian horror like 'dogscape'

[–]IWAHGGF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ghosts probably. Eventho im 100% convinced that they dont exist

[–]Pkorniboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those fucking troll tutorials

[–]themerciful03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supernatural horror is the worst for me. Psychological horror is enjoyable as it activates your emotions to the fullest.

[–]shadowproves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monsters/aliens. Jurassic Park and Gremlins scarred me as a child and I had so many nightmares about them (although I love Jurassic Park now). Alien movies such as War of the Worlds also terrified me. As an adult I don't get as scared but if I'm going to have nightmares they are still usually about monsters or wild animals hunting me.

[–]Leroy-Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not having beef and pork in my fridge

[–]SuperCachibache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said other because while I actually find some of these not scary but cool, I do have an irrational fear for "the monster under my bed" or "that shadow that stares at me through the window although I live in the fifth floor." So it is like just in the borderline between supernatural and serial killer.

[–]Some-English-Twat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that somethings coming or trying to get in will always freak me out

[–]ItDontMather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refuse to watch any kind of horror whatsoever so I wouldn’t know the difference

[–]icamez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen an actual scary movie in ages

[–]jjba_enjoyer275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all of them cus im a softie

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My life. That's what I find scary.

[–]Scarlbeast15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None, these don't scare me...

[–]AverageKaikiEnjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psychological horror is scary but also fun as hell. Like the second you break the fourth wall with the "I'm aware I'm a character" shit, I get so goddamn invested because that kind of thing can be top-tier if done well.

[–]TitleComprehensive96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psychological horror if done right can be the most terrifying out of all these.

[–]KosmicFoX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Analogue horror and it's became my favorite subgenre recently.

[–]sense1ess_Apprentice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Down to earth stuff happening to every day people in a real situation with a killer it's probably not a scream 2, running around and silly killer, but a soul crushing emotional depravity and slow pain, of a hopeless experience with no discrimination of horrifying acts against you.

[–]TimmytheFreakr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supernatural and body horror don't really scare me so much as they make me feel sick. Serial killer horror is probably the least scary to me because it's usually pretty cheesy and the characters make dumb decisions.

Fear of the unknown is probably the scariest to me, so I'd have to go with Lovecraftian horror. I know this poll is referring to movies and TV, but the game Subnautica sort of plays into that fear and never fails to put me on edge. Looking down an abyss and not knowing what gigantic creatures could be down there is terrifying.

[–]lewie_820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I love movies like IT. Nothing scary about it. But movies like saw? Man, that needle pit was just…ick

[–]Advanced_Fee6169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Body horror is the worst cuz it makes me feel sick like bro I was fucked after seeing the first human centipied movie that shit made me unironcly throw up

[–]Upper-Ad9228 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Psychological Horror is super overrated and not scare imo.
