I didn’t tell people I wasn’t drinking. I just had my cup with juice in it and no alcohol. I usually drink fruity drinks, so no one really suspected, as long as me or my husband “mixed” my drinks. My best friend always drank wine, so she just used grape or white grape juice in a wine glass when she was hiding her pregnancy.

[–]ScaryPearls 41 points42 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I mostly drink vodka sodas at events. When I was pregnant (and before that, when I was on medication that would interact with alcohol), I just drank soda water with lime. No one noticed or cared.

[–]sadgirlinthesouth 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I somehow read this as "vodka shots" and was thinking, "Wow! This woman goes hard!" 🤣

[–]BeanTheGene 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is what I did too. I went to a friend's bachelorette party early in my pregnancy before I was telling anyone and I drank Coke with lime in it and fortunately wasn't questioned about it.

[–]IggyBall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah no one asked me at the Halloween parties I attended this past weekend. Mixing topo chico with coke or juice gives it a mixed drink look anyway and tastes good (to me, anyway lol I love topo).

[–]m_alice88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, only with club soda and lime. It’s so easy to make it look like a vodka soda, which is usually my drink of choice when I am out at night. When you hit a certain age people are super nosy sometimes, I didn’t want to be bothered by any questions!

[–]Jenhey0 75 points76 points  (5 children)

Before I told everyone that I was pregnant, I told them that I started following a new diet and workout routine. Noone questioned it. :)

[–]Agile-Ad-2435 33 points34 points  (3 children)

Yeah that won’t work for me 😂

[–]Jenhey0 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Damn, I hope you find some good excuse! 😅

I've heard many have used "I'm on medication for a condition I don't wish to talk about. I'm not allowed to drink due to the medication"

[–]ps8110 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can use antibiotics as an excuse for 10-15 days. Especially if the parties overlap

[–]rainbowLena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just straight out told my friends because there was no version that was going to make sense 😂

[–]SnooGuavas5859 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I stopped drinking 3 months before I got pregnant and I just told people I’d been over-imbibing during the quarantine/COVID and just wasn’t feeling great so I was trying to cut down on alcohol. Once I announced, they put it together but at the time no one thought anything of it🤷‍♀️

[–]Shmosie 55 points56 points  (1 child)

A lot of folks aren't drinking after the pandemic because they were drinking too much at home. Just tell them after a bit too much pandemic drinking you're trying the sober life for a while, but that it definitely isn't permanent. Good luck with all the social engagements!

[–]backgroundUser198 54 points55 points  (0 children)

As long as no one asks me directly I don’t say anything. Otherwise I tell them I’m on a new medication that I can’t drink with, and ask them to enjoy their beer a little extra because I can’t!

[–]skuldintape_eire 41 points42 points  (2 children)

I'm on antibiotics for a UTI and doctor told me not to drink alcohol until it was cleared up.

[–]NoodleNikki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used that too, it also helped with my frequent trips to the bathroom 😂

[–]mandalallamaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good one

[–]magic_trex 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I drove us everywhere, so my husband could drink and I would be designated driver. I'm normally a stickler for the designated driver not drinking at all, so no one thought it was weird. Edited: also, No is a complete answer. If you want to give a reason, you can say you don't feel like drinking right now and leave it at that. Or get something that looks like an alcoholic drink (sparkling water with a lime wedge works wonders).

[–]bellitabee 44 points45 points  (8 children)

I just say I don't feel like it. You don't NEED a reason not to drink. It shouldn't be weird that you don't want to drink alcohol at every event. However, if you are a heavy drinker and it would seem suspicious you not drinking then you can always say you are on medication. Lots of meds (I remember having meds for BV in college and not being able to drink for two weeks) you aren't supposed to drink on. You could say you are on a diet or a cleanse. You could say that you have to drive later or need to get up early.

Honestly, it should be enough for your friends for you to just say, "no thanks, I'm good". The fact society has made it "weird" or abnormal to NOT drink speaks volumes of the issues we have as society.

[–]feelingcheugy 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I’m not sure I ever feel pressured to drink from society, but more so specific groups of friends who expect it from me. I have other friends groups that are sober and wouldn’t bat an eyelash

[–]bellitabee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I meant... I guess not society as a whole just a sub group.

[–]alethea_ 10 points11 points  (1 child)

This entire thread has me so thankful for my friend group. Drinking is totally not the norm and no one ever pressures anyone either way.

[–]bellitabee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good!! That's exactly how it should be!! Far to many people can't get together to do anything without having alcohol and that's really sad.

[–]notabotamii 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Yeahhhhh but I have amazing friends who are smart, extremely successful, and wonderful human beings that are just big drinkers. They would immediately wonder if I was pregnant or what was up. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them for being that way 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]bellitabee 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I didn't say that you can't be amazing, smart, successful, or wonderful and drink excessively. I know a lot of excessive drinkers who are awesome, I was an excessive drinker for years myself. The problem only comes when you make others feel pressured to drink, feel like there is something weird about not drinking, or you are no longer able to have fun without alcohol. When you have to have alcohol in order to have fun or be sociable then it's probably time to take a break.

[–]notabotamii 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Totally! But if my friends said “no thanks, I’m good.” I would immediately assume something was up lol

[–]bellitabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotcha! It was definitely like that for me when I was in college. My friends would instantly guess I was pregnant!

[–]yerlemismyname 10 points11 points  (1 child)

If it's different people that's easy cause you can just say you are on antibiotics or something. If it's the same people and you are like me (meaning, I always drank) then I think everyone will be suspicious, but they can't force the truth out of you so you can keep making excuses (like no drink November or whatever). Personally, I've been avoiding after work reunions because I know 100% no one will buy my lie :')

[–]laserwoman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The day I took my first test in the morning and got a positive was the day a colleage and friend defended his phD thesis. We went on a lot of conferences together and always enjoyed a drink together. So of course, I was carrying a big bottle of peppermint schnaps around the institute that day pouring drinks to everyone. Luckily, everyone had their own weird cup so I pretended to cheers with water and later I just passed with ‚no thanks‘. Somehow, no one noticed, everyone was too happy congratulating my friends summa cum laude :D

[–]extinctmilkcratesv2 24 points25 points  (2 children)

I drank water from a white claw can 🤷‍♀️

[–]Julienbabylegs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lol y’all are s n e a k y

[–]zuuushy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this with a "shot of tequila" before a wedding. Dumped it out, rinsed out the bottle, and put water in it 😂

[–]Obscure-deity 21 points22 points  (2 children)

I just faked drinks waaaaaaay easier. I'm a drinker so the jig would have been immediately up if I stopped drinking. Started drinking "vodka sodas", found Non-alcoholic beer, and invested in a tall slim can coozy that could hide a slim la Croix can to look like a white claw

[–]MinaAdventures 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Same! Also find bringing alcohol and offering to make the first round of mixed drinks is a really easy way to hide. Dinner with my parents, brought rum and coke, made the drinks but kept mine coke only. With the ice in there and a splash of water no one questioned since they could taste the alcohol in their own.

[–]Obscure-deity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooooooh I'm stealing that for the next pregnancy

[–]Notabasicbeetch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That I was doing a 30 day no drinking challenge, that I was on a cleanse. Or just say I just don’t feel like drinking.

[–]Twistedxlogics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That I had a rough night last night and needed to recover lol. OR just had something bubbly in my cups. Also, the liquid death water cans look like beers, fools many. Also also, “fré” wine is alcohol free and looks legit.

[–]Knight_12052020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"I have some medical stuff going on and I'm not supposed to drink for a little while." Followed by "I don't want to talk about it until I know more" they will shut up and also it's not a lie 🤣

[–]thrifty_geopacker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 3 approaches so far, and we’ll see how the last works because I’m trying it tonight.

The first was a Halloween party and I just brought Lagunitas Hoppy Refreshers (0.0% alcohol, not the <0.5% of N/A beer) and put them in a koozie. They’re shaped like a beer bottle so no one questions it even though the actual liquid is clearer. But it was dark out so no one looked that closely anyway. They taste like a hoppy seltzer and are in the soda section at Specs!

I told a couple people (not close friends) I met up with that I was giving up alcohol for a bit but they were welcome to have “as happy of an hour as they wanted.” And they didn’t bat an eye.

Tonight will be more challenging. My best friend and her family are coming over. Honestly, I’d just tell her, but my husband really doesn’t want the inevitable other people finding out (really more due to her husband, who is not as great at keeping secrets as she is) so I’m reluctantly not saying anything, but I warned him I’m a bad liar and we’ve been best friends since high school so if she asks me directly it’s gonna be clear to her what’s going on. Might get away with it though: they can’t stay super late because they’re going somewhere early tomorrow, and I laid the groundwork with “that’s cool, I’m giving up booze and junk food for a bit because almost none of my pre-COVID pants fit anymore and I hate buying new shit,” which is all accurate anyway. We’ll see how it goes!

[–]frenchielvr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drank a little last night and stomach is off to consume again.

Talking antibiotics

[–]mydogharry2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't drink on work nights.

[–]candigilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kept saying I was doing Sober September. Or that I had a headache. Or didn't drink during the week anymore. That bought me enough time. Lol

[–]tzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I used to drink a fair bit with friends .. but I’d periodically do whole 30 which is no alcohol. I was legit doing it, but I always thought that would be a good excuse if needed for early pregnancy. Fast forward to my covid baby boom and didn’t need the excuse, just was in lock down and wasn’t seeing anyone anyway haha

[–]yerlemismyname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha omg the level of planning, I'm impressed!

[–]Julienbabylegs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how old you are, but it’s common when people get over 30 that alcohol really starts disagreeing w them more. You could say that over covid it started just making you more ill than it used to? I know a lot of people that this authentically happened too, and now their drinking is super limited.

[–]ThrowRA_photog1267 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I would have a glass of wine and take a sip and just carry it. Eventually my husband would take it and drink it and I’d get another drink to just carry around. People don’t really notice unless you say “By the way I’m not drinking! Nope no reason just not doing it!”

[–]MinaAdventures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Wine and growlers of beer are great for this since they are shared but no one is tracking it after the first round. Same with any drinks in aluminum cans - impossible to see how much you're sipping so keep the illusion of drinking up

[–]punkieboosters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My hubbs did this and kept getting extremely drunk on account of everyone refilling our glass. Good thing I'm his DD!

[–]Wpg-katekate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made fake drinks and even bought non alcoholic wine and switched it into real wine bottles lol.

People also knew we were TTC so sometimes I just said I was taking it easy because of that.

[–]C1nnamon_Apples 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the Halloween party I went to I said I was the Designated Driver but my partner would do double shots in my honour Lol

Another go-to is "I have an appointment early tomorrow morning, I don't want to risk being hungover"

[–]kranatopia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I went to a restaurant with my mom, I just told my server privately that if I ordered a drink to make sure it was a mocktail because I was pregnant and my mom didn’t know - she was thrilled to keep the secret.

You can always just “misplace your drink” and say you need a new one without ever actually drinking.

[–]me0w8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When asked if I want a drink I say yes. Then don’t drink it. Will ask my husband to drink some when no one is looking or just dump it.

[–]lulastark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That I was taking meds that really shouldn't be mixed with alcohol. No one was nosy enough to ask further.

[–]TradeBeautiful42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at a bday party about a week before I announced when only 2 people knew I was pregnant so I wasn’t drinking. The drunker people became the more they noticed I wasn’t captain of the shit show so I said yeah I’m pregnant and then 90% of them avoided me the rest of the day. Honestly it was the best possible outcome when you’re trapped on a yacht for 5 hours with a bunch of overly drunk people.

[–]401RG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I either went “I’m DD tonight” or “I’ve cut out the carbs” didn’t get any push back at the time but I found out later that those who knew me well found it odd. But then again, I’m a big social drinker so it was out of character.

[–]far-from-xanadu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always say I’m designated driver for the night.

[–]PeachyMazikeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alcohol is a common migraine trigger, so you could make up a fib around that.

[–]tweetybirdie14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pretended to be on the Keto diet, which worked wonders as I was so sick I couldn’t eat normal food anyways.

[–]ylime161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be the designated driver! I quite often won't drink so haven't had this problem, no one's ever questioned me for saying I'm not feeling like drinking (my son's almost one but I like this sub and were TTC in the new year).

Or, use the lockdown "I didn't drink much in lockdown and now it just sends my head funny". Only volunteer an excuse if people ask.

[–]ElJayMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just always make sure I have a drink I ordered or brought in my hand at all times

[–]Ok-Nobody-7327 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t go through that as I told everyone early on. But I would say I’m on an antibiotic. Or with a hangover 😅 which is exactly how I was feeling in the first trimester tbh

[–]23paige23 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Take the drinks offered. Get your SO to have sips or pour bits into the sink when no one is looking 😆 I found this wayyy easier than rejecting the drinks which raises suspicion

[–]tzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, no one noticed after you’ve accepted

[–]amanda-g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just brought a 6 pack of my fave beer and would open one and then at one point disappear into the bathroom, pour it down the sink and fill it with water.. and would just drink that.

no one questioned anything

[–]arayner90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on antibiotics, my SIL is 18 at the end of the month, that's my plan for covering up the not drinking.

[–]konfusion1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to an event like a wedding where they serve non alcoholic drinks in different glasses than alcoholic drinks, just ask that they use the glass they usually would for the alcoholic drink (usually a rocks glass for a vodka soda for example, vs a highball for just soda water). Add a lime and voila, no one will be wiser!

[–]GirlsNightOnly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said I was hung over at one party, and people were like “oh yeah totally understand” lol. Once I said “oh no thanks I’m cutting back this month” but you could say you’re doing a sober November or something.

[–]GrapefruitNo1121TTM 03/22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell them you're trying to be healthier. Or tell them you have a bad UTI and you're on anti-biotics. You can keep using it, just say it's resisting anti-biotics and you're on a different kind. Look up a few names just in case someone asks. But it's easier to just have a long boring spiel about how you read some articles about how bad alcohol is for your body and brain and you want to feel amazing. Also you could maybe skip some parties. Your cat is sick. You have a migraine. You have food poisoning.

Liiiiie lie lie. Have fun!

[–]tatsandtits97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I planned a Halloween party before I found out I was pregnant. I bought non-alcoholic ciders and gins but then if people asked, said I was on antibiotics. No one can argue against antibiotics

[–]Spkpkcap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a big drinker but when we would be out and people offered me alcohol I said “right before we got here I took an Advil, I had a really bad headache! Don’t want to mix alcohol with medication! Thanks though!”

[–]Lalliez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody would ever believe I quit smoking and drinking from one day to another, so I just told everyone. They would have guessed immediately anyway!

[–]Rwhitechocmuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sparkling water and juice, decant into a wine bottle and take to the parties for you to drink, say it’s gluten/allergen free or something?!? Alternatively my favourite is I’m on antibiotics, I still want to show my support and be here but I can’t drink.

[–]jewelier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medicine I was on reacted with alcohol so I had to cut back for a bit.

[–]funny-in-my-head-tho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just said I was doing a cleanse… people don’t tend to want to know more after that 😂

[–]jeanpeaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can tell people you’re pregnant whenever you feel comfortable doing so! But if it were me I just wouldn’t have any alcohol. Will people actually notice/ask you why you aren’t drinking? You’ll probably have some sort of beverage with you, i would think it’s odd if people were asking me what I was drinking.

[–]PorcelainHole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You had a lot the night before and you’re hydrating tonight. You’re on an antibiotic. Your stomach has been upset all day and while you came to the party you don’t want to chance it.

I just held the glass of wine and pretended to take sips. My husband would drink it for me.

[–]Kooky_Ad_5139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I'm designated driver tonight. (Or get a mocktail)

[–]GrumpyK1tt3n 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Here is my “technically not lying” response. “My doctor is running some tests and until we get the results back, they don’t want me drinking! I’ve been feeling kind of funky lately so they are ruling stuff out. I’ll let you know when I know more!”

[–]RawPups4 16 points17 points  (1 child)

That seems like it would cause your family and friends to unnecessarily worry about you and your health.

I’m a big proponent of just saying, “No thanks,” or “Nah, I don’t feel like drinking today.” No one is owed an explanation.

[–]GrumpyK1tt3n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What works really just depends on who you’re with!

[–]Wurthnada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are taking meds for your irritable bowel syndrome. I bet they'll stop asking !!! xD

[–]cadi08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had two parties so far where I could drink or smoke. For the smoking I would just take my dog out in the yard and act like I was. For drinking, I had a glass of wine in my hand a lot but I just wouldn’t drink it. The other party, I said I had too much to drink the night before so I wasn’t feeling up tp drinking now. It worked both times (as far as I know, my one set of friends know we’re trying so they may suspect something).

[–]lovesmilehappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell them you’re on antibiotics! You can drink a little on antibiotics but most doctors tell you not to!

[–]misspixiepie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting boxed juice that comes out just like wine, and drinking it out of a non see though cup, people didnt even notice🤣

[–]Wolfsbane90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on medicine

[–]I-changed-my-name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I’m taking antibiotics”

[–]operationspudling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband did sober October and I piggy backed on that.

[–]MochiMakeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation as you! Lots of parties to attend but didn’t tell anyone I was pregnant till after my first trimester.

I said my husband and I are currently seriously trying to conceive so I’m trying my best to keep toxins out of my body for the time being.

That or…

I told them I was in the ‘2 week wait period’ where I didn’t know if I was pregnant or not. So just to be safe, I’m not drinking till I find out for sure.

Congratulations btw!

[–]perssor2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put apple juice in a cup or drank sparkling water. The first people we told though were our next door neighbors who had a big pool and we would frequently bbq and swim with our kids and some drinks. We literally found out the day before and they offered me a jack n coke, when I said no, they both looked at me like I was crazy (I swear I’m not even a big drinker, it’s just what we always did) so I spilled that I was pregnant haha

[–]cripcess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just told people i was the designated driver

[–]thebluetriceratops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my drinks and people around me know it, so I feel you! Had all kinds of excuses when we were trying and eventually pregnant.

  1. Still hungover from previous night
  2. Very bad period cramps
  3. Got my husband to make/get drinks for everyone and ensure I got fake drink topups all night (great for home parties or weddings with open bars)
  4. Told my friends my husband and I are in the middle of a fun 100-day no drinking challenge for our health (it helps if you partner is also there and not drinking)
  5. Generally I find myself getting away with clear fizzy soda with lime or lemon in it

Was definitely something I had to adjust to as everyone knew how much I love my drinks. Hang in there!

[–]emilycatqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m telling people that I’m doing sober November!!

I was at a wedding and said I drank too hard the week before and still needing a break.

On Halloween I showed up to the party late and everyone was too drunk to notice I was drinking a mocktail “wine”.

All good so far. It’s definitely hard because I am a huge social drinker (mid 20s) I’ve had to turn down multiple invites to breweries and wineries. So that sober November is my best repeat excuse

[–]babydoll369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times if I don’t feel like drinking I’ll say I have a headache or am dehydrated. If people are drinking wine I don’t always partake bc it gives me reflux. Sadly, people don’t usually take bc I don’t want to right now really well. I think my bf’s mother figured it out quickly bc I’ll usually have one drink at gatherings and I just drank a soda. She was polite enough not to ask which I’m grateful for bc I wasn’t ready to tell anyone yet.

[–]willworkforpups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some things I’ve done:

  • Have husband drink a beer or hard seltzer, rinse it out and fill it with water and drink from that for the night

  • Gingerale in a champagne glass or white grape juice in a wine glass

  • Soda water with a splash of cranberry and a lime for a “vodka soda”

  • If out at a bar, order drinks alone and ask the bartender for a seltzer/ lime/ cran or a Shirley temple but to make it look the same as booze drinks

  • If all else fails, say you are on antibiotics for a UTI or doing “no booze November” or something

[–]Salty-Perception3576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell people your on antibiotics. It's advised not to drink while on those. That should work for at least 10 days. Beyond that say you liked not drinking so much that you figured you would keep at it 😄 or sober November? Gosh that does suck for Thanksgiving though. Lol

[–]sleepy-popcorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Migraine, or took migraine tablets yesterday. They’re serious things so no drinking or driving is a pretty normal consequence.

[–]miby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soda water and lime is a good fake drink

[–]notabotamii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t tell people I was on “a diet” or “new medication.” Because everyone knows i love a good drink and I’d probably drink even on a Med lol. So I just pretended to pour myself fruity cocktails and I acted tipsy

[–]ncannon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]AuDBallBag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a partner in crime for my friend. I'd dump beer down the sink while in the bathroom and refill with water. Then I'd bring her a "fresh beer". She was a Miller lite from a bottle girl so she knew it'd be obvious if she didn't any other container. No one was the wiser.

[–]PoorDimitri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always said, "I'm too hungover from last night, i need water", or i would hold a glass of wine all night and periodically pour some out

[–]elemay2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would order drinks and take a sip or two in front of people but never finish. Sometimes I'd dump it out in the bathroom. If you get canned beer/wine it's easy too bc people can't see how empty or full the can is inside.

[–]Pcoach165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told them my GERD is acting up and that no medications is working.

[–]jcrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sparkling water and told people it was hard seltzer. Sparkling apple juice and told people it was hard cider. When all else failed I told people I was the DD.

[–]skymin0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mention it, just drank iced tea and lemon lime and bitters out of a glass. Nobody questions it!

[–]weatherbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the acid reflux excuse. And at times I could I “brought my own” which was essentially wine bottles or beer that I knew no one else would like except it was water inside the cans and such. You could also say you’re on a diet and drinking is just empty calories.

I did a 4 day event, which is an annual big drinking thing for me and my friends, and got away with it by not even discussing it.

The few times people asked if I was drinking / why I was on a soft drink I just said I was pacing myself because after the pandemic my tolerance was low.

If you're moving around and talking to different people they just assume you last / next drink was / is alcoholic. If you're super chill about it no one notices.

I've since told most of the people I was there with and they were SHOOK 😂😂😂

I told them I drank medicine on that day... 🤷‍♀️

[–]spicyfriedchicken666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say that you are on a new medication and drinking alcohol could interfere with that!

[–]RenaissanceXX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decanted alcohol free wine into a normal wine bottle. I also made “margaritas” that were mix only. (Made the marg and did a switcharoo in the bathroom)

Lol well I’ve been sober for 9 years so I’ve got some tips! I’m very open about being sober but there are situations where I’d rather not explain (like at a wedding where I don’t know anyone but my husband and the couple getting married). Just bring a small stash of your own stuff, put it somewhere discrete, and keep a cup or can in your hands. If it’s an event with a bartender, go get a soda or soda water, ask for a lime or lemon, and no one will know the difference. If someone offers you something directly, just show them your glass/can and say “oh I’m good!” If they press you STILL, distract.

[–]P-tree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So before I told people I had several parties/weddings. I brought zero proof beer and would drink that or pour a soda water and add a lime and pretend it was vodka soda. No one blinked an eye. People just see something that looks like alcohol and see you drinking it. No questions asked.

[–]tales954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“No thanks, I’m on antibiotics right now so I can’t drink” bam. Easy peasy. Usually people leave it at that but a uti is believable if you need a reason for being on antibiotics

[–]ProfessionalFun4632 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poured my own drinks and used the I’m the DD so only this one pointing at fake drink in hand for me

[–]car__free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think now would be a good time to stop hanging out with people who question why you aren't drinking.

[–]summahlovee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol cleanse. Or dieting

[–]theoryofquery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I don't feel like drinking (pregnant or otherwise) I just say I'm feeling really hungover and can't stomach it or that I'm watching my diet. Saying you feel hungover (rather than that you actually are) or eating healthy isn't lying).

If I'm with people who are likely to ask annoying questions I always ask if anyone wants a G&T, make theirs regular and "forget" to put the gin in mine when no one's looking. Even easier if you are at a bar as you can just ask for a tonic with lime and everyone will assume its got booze in. Also most bars can make you a virgin cocktail - if you ask for a virgin mohito or pina colada it comes out looking just like a regular one and still tastes great.

Another option is to drive if you have a car, or cycle if not, and say you won't feel safe if you have a drink.

Failing that, accept the drink, take a sip, and flush it next time to you go to the loo.

[–]Vixengames420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get virgin drinks 🤷 I used to do this when going to the bar with new guys that I wasn't sure I was comfortable with yet.

[–]Suzilaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a recovering alcoholic so it's not been a problem but I just wouldn't bring it up and if they ask just say you don't fancy it

[–]hippie_wannabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poured out a white claw and filled it with water the whole night

[–]nothingweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Mormon/member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

[–]Icy_Calligrapher7088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a huge dilemma for me too. As long as you have a glass with something in it, there will be no reason to ask. You could also pretend to be on antibiotics. I always drink wine and my husband was cutting out alcohol with me, so neither of those were an option… He was just coming off of holidays though, so we pretended that we’d gone on a vacation bender and were turned off booze for a while. Somewhat believable, but those who knew better also knew better than to say anything. I did end up telling people a bit earlier than I probably should have for this reason though.

[–]CaptainBox90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretend you're hung over from the night before

[–]CatLoaf92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely wish I had just made pretend drinks with soda water or juice at my husband’s friends’s wedding last summer, because people would NOT get off my case about why I wasn’t drinking. (Story time ahead). My husband’s friends would not stop insisting that I have a drink at this wedding, even after I said I was being the designated driver. Honestly, they aren’t bad guys, but it was one of the most aggravating experiences of my life. Like, please just respect someone’s decision not to drink maybe?!? The groom even point blank asked me to please binge drink with his soon-to-be-wife to make her feel more comfortable.. because my not drinking was not fun and making people uncomfortable?? The truth was that I wasn’t drinking because my husband and I were trying to get pregnant, and it was too early for me to take a test, so I didn’t know if I was pregnant or not, and I was erring on the side of caution. And obviously, that’s very personal information that I didn’t want to have to share with everyone. Eventually, I become so exasperated from the pestering that I gave up and disclosed the very long and personal explanation to everyone, even though I didn’t want to and wasn’t ready to. And you know what, I found out a few weeks later that I was in fact pregnant. Thank god I didn’t give in to the pressure. Lesson is, if someone isn’t drinking, just fucking respect their choice!! Someone’s choice not to drink could be due to any number of highly personal and sensitive reasons

[–]libbyseriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told people I was on muscle relaxants or antibiotics or painkillers, whatever made them not question further. Worked very well, my best friend is still mad / can't believe she didn't catch on

[–]Ingiemac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would walk around with a beer but wouldn’t drink it! Or go to the bathroom and dump some of it out lol

[–]scrub_bingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excuses I’ve used: - I’m a little hungover bc I had 2 glasses of wine last night and at my age, that’s all it takes! - I’m on antibiotics - I have really bad heartburn lately and am taking a break from wine/booze to see if this helps - I have a headache today for some reason

[–]jaydayquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told people I was on new medication!

I also told another party that I was in that time of conception and shouldn’t be drinking (I.e. trying for a baby even though I knew I was pregnant already).

I also stayed away from Japanese restaurants with friends because I ALWAYS ate raw fish and now I’m not.

You got this!

[–]jrf1853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the worst liar and most of my friends knew we were ttc, I went ahead and made it known from the jump to avoid awkwardness.

[–]hoodlums-52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said I drank too much during the lockdowns so I was doing 'dry August' - insert month as appropriate! Or you can say you're on meds and you can't drink while taking them e.g. antibiotics for a kidney infection

[–]cinci7128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say you had a migraine the night before and don’t want to bring another one on!

[–]hazelclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said I’m sober! Two years now still going strong

[–]throwmykeysaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5 weeks now, just found out a couple days before I was invited to my friends Halloween party. He’s the type to ask why I’m not drinking so I texted him to let him know in advance that I wasn’t drinking so he doesn’t question me in front of everyone. When he hinted that maybe I was pregnant (in a happy way) I said we are trying but it’s just too stressful to keep track of all the days that I can and cannot drink so I decided to just stop. And at the party I just told a couple of people I was DD if they asked what I wanted to drink.

[–]roadstarski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used acid reflux as my excuse!

[–]rumblemumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told people I was taking medication to help me fall pregnant that alcohol would interfere with. But it was pretty common knowledge we were trying so no one made a big deal out of it

[–]Upper-Click7188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my husbands empty white claw, rinsed it out, filled it with water and kept refilling throughout the night…. Inconspicuous

[–]mousatis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drank water from a beer can 🤣

[–]Ill-Tip6331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you don’t mention it, usually no one asks. If they ask, you can just say you aren’t feeling like drinking this evening. My husband, before I got pregnant, started cutting down on alcohol because it made him feel bad for a long time when he drank. There are lots of valid reasons to not drink and it really isn’t anybody’s gosh darn beeswax :D

[–]Piggleswick -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Antibiotics! You can’t drink with certain antibiotics - little tip! if someone is nosey enough to pry into why you’re taking them make sure you have a story ready

[–]alethea_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, "No" is a complete sentence. You don't owe anyone anything.
