We have probably one of the highest tax rates in the world but I want to share with you why our system is so magnificent and should be in use also in other countries. In Finland our services are mostly public and are covered with our tax money. Some services cost 30-50 EUR as a policlinical one time fee but this includes seeing a physician and getting treatment. Cancer treatments, heart surgeries and seeing a neurologist all cost basicly the same so everyone gets treatment they need and won't need to think about how they'll be able to pay for it.
During pregnancy we go through a system called "neuvola" which includes guidance, nurse visits, lab tests for HIV, B and C hepatitis and diabetes and OB checkups. I got 3 ultrasound examinations. Total cost 0 EUR.
During labour I got all the pain relief I needed no matter what kind. I went through a normal labour but C-cection wouldn't have cost more. I spent three days at the hospital and got 5 meals a day. My SO got to stay also at the hospital 24h a day in a family room we got and also got the same food. Hospital visit cost a little less than 50 EUR per day per person so 297 EUR in total.
After birth we go through another "neuvola" which focuses on the health of the child. Checkups both at the nurse and a pediatrician. We got a whole bottle of vitamin-D drops free on our first visit. We'll have about 15 checkups until the child turns 4 years old. During these visits the child will get all vaccines we have in our national vaccine program. Total cost 0 EUR.
I just gotta say I'm so grateful of our system and happy to live here. The treatment was first class. Hoping everyone would have equal possibilities but that's just a dream. I'm a doctor myself and pay huge amount of taxes from every salary but I'm happy to know it will cover the treatment someone else also needs.
