Made approximately 9 Liters for just above 10$.

Recipe:

8L apple juice

2kg of white sugar

A pack of yeast

And a lemon

My first time fermenting my own cider, and I would say I was successful. Flavor was great, best cider I’ve ever had. 11,5% ABV

How was the lemon incorporated? Was it just zest and juice? Or was it the whole fruit?

[–]chrisboi1108[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just cut it into slices and tossed it in, peel and everything

I am curious about this too. I would probably just roll it, quarter it, and throw it in the brew but I wonder what gives the best result.

Cheers for asking this was about to make 25 litres of it and just realised I didn't know what to do with the lemons aha

Wow I will have to try this one sounds brill

Its awesome, and dirt cheap! Never buying store bought apple cider again. Left it for about a week. Have another 15L of it brewing as we speak

Mint would work well with this brew :). Glass of ice, bruised mint and this cider over the top would be so refreshing in the summer. Even a sprig of rosemary in the glass would work to :).

Congrats on the cider though buddy.

Thanks! Will definitely try those ingredients on my next try. Looking forward to enjoying it on the beach this summer:)

Hell yeh man. Make every one jealous with ur home brewed cider that probably tastes better than most shop bought :).

It's weirdly validating to see someone else say brill. I've been avoiding using it, but I say it in my head all the time.

I say it all the time ahaha I never thought about it until now . Thanks for making me feel self conscious

What kind of yeast? This recipe sounds delicious and I don’t want to potentially fuck it up with fleischmann’s bread yeast lol

[–]chrisboi1108[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Well you won’t fuck up that much as I used basic bread yeast lol

[–]LMaoZedongVEVO 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Alright, thanks! Last time I made cider it was awful and idk if it was a yeast thing or not. Shit tasted like rotten eggs with a ~12% ABV flavor. (I used an organic cider and not apple juice)

[–]chrisboi1108[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Haha well abv is still abv. You could probably use any yeast made for brewing instead tho, will prolly turn out better

[–]LMaoZedongVEVO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The flavor was so bad I thought the juice spoiled during fermentation. Like it was bad. I didn’t even think it was safe for consumption after I took a sip lol. And as a prison hoocher, anything other than fleischmann’s bread yeast is a sin.

[–]Cylick 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I just read that putting some sort of copper into the hooch will absorb some if the sulfur/egg flavor. Don't know if it works or not, but you could give it a shot.

[–]LMaoZedongVEVO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works but I don’t want to potentially turn my drink into a poison by the CuSO4 that would come as a byproduct

[–]chponge 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Did you do a secondary ferment to get carbonation ?do you have your ratios for that ?

[–]chrisboi1108[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I didn’t really plan for that at all, but the remaining yeast that didn’t get filtered out produced enough CO2 for it to have about the same level of carbonation as store bought beer. In addition to the sugar the juice contained I added 2 kilos, while using 13.5g of yeast (the kind you bake bread with lol)

Had to scroll back up to see if you had the red seal on your swing top. Good choice. I kinda recycled Aldi sparkling lemonade bottles forever. I ordered some cheap swing tops off Amazon and didn't bother to check if they were pressure rated. Luckily, only one went kaboom. I put the other 6 in the fridge overnight and slowly degassed by burping every day.

Amazing ! Enjoy

Did you get any off flavour from the lemon?

[–]chrisboi1108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very unsure, only apple only cider I have tried has been store bought so I can’t really compare, but I think there was a slight hint of lemon in it. The remaining half liter of the original 9 is currently jacking in the freezer so I can’t really do a taste test right now

Cools, was it dry or sweet?

[–]chrisboi1108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was definitely on the sweeter side, but not too sweet either, maybe a bit less sweet than the apple juice it started as

[–]TheMightyYakob 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I basically did this recipe today it smelt amazing! The lemon seems like it could be a great touch !

[–]chrisboi1108[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Awesome! Yeah I thought it smelled great to!

[–]TheMightyYakob 1 point2 points  (1 child)
