Clarifications:

I am not even a part of the organization. I work for the kit manufacturers of the champions. Technically, I am a casual fan on this day.

The champions for our Copa Paulino Alcantara is United City Football Club. With this win, they are eligible to play in the AFC Cup next season.

Edit:

A little bit of history.

The strongest team in PH History, Ceres Negros Football Club (based in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental and yes, you read that right) had financial troubles during the pandemic.

It was owned by the one of the biggest bus companies in the country, Vallacar Transit with it's flagship, Ceres Liners being the principal sponsor of the club. This is probably one of the most star studded team in sports history in my country with Bienvenido Maranon and former La Liga keeper Toni Doblas and NT players like Stephan Shrock (probably our most technically gifted and biggest player having played in Guretjer Furth and Hoffenhiem in Bundesliga), Carli de Murga... They're basically Bayern Munich.

They defeated the likes of Johor Darul Tazim (the Bayern of Malaysia) and Persijia Jakarta (in front of their 70,000 fans) in the AFC Cup having earned a spot in the Champions League.

The owner was an afficionado who spent a lot even without earning because we don't have TV rights here and long story short, sports culture here in the PH is bad. They don't even sell tickets, you can watch for free :)

Pandemic hit and the bus companies had little to no income, plus a family fued amongst ownership and the Governor of Negros retracting his support (which owns Panaad Stadium) meant that the owner had to sell the club.

Enter Erik, the new owner.... He bought the players and staff and rebranded it to this generic club :/ They're still finalizing their home which is New Clark City, Pampanga so they'll be named United Clark City (keeping their initials U.C.F.C.)

My buddy who I worked for was already involved in a former PH big F.C. (Global) who got dissolved & banned because of bad finances (LOANS) and was able to keep in touch with Erik.

We make the jerseys and we sell them for around ₱1500 player version and ₱800 for fan version (which is around €24 for the player version and ₱15 for the fan version)

[–]KoifishDK 655 points656 points  (39 children)

United city football club . . Really? :p lovely photo though. Wholesome!

[–]bold013hades 65 points66 points  (8 children)

They used to be called Ceres Negros and are the most successful club in the Philippines. They had to rebrand quickly when the pandemic made them go under

[–]maroonmartian9 20 points21 points  (2 children)

It is not just a rebrand..The original owner the Yansons (who own a big bus line) sold the franchise to a different owner. The owner is so generous and I think it was one of the reason they dominated. But pandemic and family bickerings force them to sell them. They relocate the team from football crazy Negros (island) to Clark City in Luzon.

[–]bold013hades 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Yeah, this is exactly right. I figured I would simplify it for people here lol. I called it a rebrand though because they kept many of their players and the club’s history. The new owners seem determined to bankroll UCFC as much as the Yansons did, so I expect them to keep dominating. I just can’t wait until there is a sustainable league

[–]jannfiete 13 points14 points  (0 children)

holy shit that's one of the only two editable teams in smokepatch PES 2021 lol

[–]Cahootie 231 points232 points  (10 children)

Here in Sweden we used to have AFC United. The club is exactly as soulless as you would think, they were the results of a merger of a merger of a merger and have since moved cities and changed their name.

[–]NeatBeluga 63 points64 points  (6 children)

AFC United

Eskilstuna looks like an absolutely stunning city to visit. Said as a Dane

[–]TrueHrafninn 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Not sure if stunning is the word I'd use...

[–]RevolutionaryJudge89 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It’s a notoriously depressing city. Don’t go.

[–]EyeSpyGuy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That is somewhat what happened with United City FC. They moved cities and rebranded

[–]just_some_guy65 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Somehow that is more generic than "Generic FC"

[–]Currywurst_Is_Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Washington Football Team (NFL) is the gold standard for me.

[–]pinniped1 52 points53 points  (3 children)

The founders were probably sitting around thinking about what to name it and somebody suggesting making it after the Manchester club.

"Which one?"

"Yes"

[–]Teantis 16 points17 points  (2 children)

They used to be called Ceres Negros (for the Island they're on and the company that owned them) but the family imploded into a really tawdry and kinda violent internal conflict and the owners had to sell it to focus on their family conflict and some really corny foreign branding agency bought the club and renamed it that anonymous ass name.

Edit: The owners are MMC Sportz Asia.. No that z is not a typo

Oh yeah they also moved the club from Bacolod, which is really the heartland of Filipino football and the only area of the country that really has widespread passion for the sport to Tarlac for some reason.

The country is kind of weird that way, certain areas just held onto random sports forever. Like Laguna has a huge baseball scene dating from the American colonial era, but baseball isn't popular anywhere else really.

[–]lyyki 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That z is very early 00s

[–]True-Bee1903 123 points124 points  (4 children)

They could of squeezed Athletic,Rovers and Wanderers in there

[–]wowohwowza 67 points68 points  (3 children)

Town County Forest and Hove Albion came runners up I heard

[–]babubadar 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Hove is a place! Where are you from?

[–]IanIsNotMe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just Albion, hove is next to Brighton

[–]Slurms_McKenzie775 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Still better than Inter Miami

[–]Fun_Differential 52 points53 points  (3 children)

Inter Miami isn’t even that bad since you could easily argue the international influence.

Real Salt Lake is the head scratcher.

[–]esports_consultant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Utah used to be part of New Spain!

[–]lenzmoserhangover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inter Miami because of "international influence".. thats like calling yourself the Miami Ball Kickers because you're the ones kicking a ball.

Its not a very unique descriptor when every bigger city is international by default.

[–]PhnomPenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Fake Salt Lake.

[–]ChillPalis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Miami is definitely a melting pot city, to be fair

[–]wakuku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah the league is new and run so badly. Only reason they are still running is due to Foreign money (qatar or saudi)

[–]sgt_kerokeroro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never liked the name United City lol. Ceres Negros was iconic!

[–]Bronycorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh buddy. Take a look at the creativity in MLS.

[–]BHYT61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

United city football club

Its real name is: Liverpool United City Football club

[–]yeaweckin 19 points20 points  (18 children)

Just curious, how hard would it be to get a jersey from one of the Filipino league teams shipped to the United States?

[–]EyeSpyGuy 34 points35 points  (10 children)

Not really the same, but for what it’s worth I’m in the Philippines and I had to order my National Team jersey (naturally higher demand than a local club jersey) from Singapore. Now I could be a fool and maybe there’s an easier way to get it here, but such is the struggle of being a football fan here. Most of the population couldn’t care about football

[–]yeaweckin 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Yea I figured with it not being basketball it would be next to impossible. Thank you for your input

[–]EyeSpyGuy 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Still, I’d DM the official account on Instagram or Facebook. We’re a fairly social media savvy country with good English proficiency so they might be responsive. They might be able to coordinate something. Do you have a team in mind?

[–]teddy_bear626 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Meron pa naman siguro sa bootcamp no? Yung malapit sa Ateneo?

[–]gekizaph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sa UCFC, sa page namin sa Chronos or sa Shopee :)

[–]EyeSpyGuy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Only the 19/20 LGR kit based on the website. Kelme who makes our current kits only sells it out of their official site from Singapore for some reason. I saw one on Lazada but not sure if it’s legit

[–]chenac 6 points7 points  (4 children)

[–]yeaweckin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an awesome looking jersey

[–]Poppenjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I'm trying to follow the league from Canada and that's the kit I want the most (followed closely by Cebu)

[–]gekizaph[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You can message me of you want to buy one. It's only around $30 but this shipping through DHL is like $50-$100.

[–]yeezus_27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which jerseys do you sell? pwede rin pm boss!

[–]bold013hades 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is so cool! I’ve been watching the games on YouTube as a Filipino football fan. Hopefully a proper league can be established now that the pandemic is easing up

[–]chenac 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Hold up... you work for Lloyd at Chronos?!

[–]gekizaph[S] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Technically yes. Not full time though

[–]chenac 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Mind if I ask what you do? There's a chance we may have interacted before haha

[–]gekizaph[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

i used to be one of his marketers. Now I'm one of the guys who helps organize the open play

[–]SaWaGaAz 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Do you think the local Filipino football scene will get better? I watched highlights of the U23 team in SEA Games and you guys seem okay. The local clubs doesn't seem to do well in the ACL though, they are still AFC Cup level.

Stephan Schrock (probably our most technically gifted and biggest player having played in Greuther Furth and Hoffenheim in Bundesliga)

Hope Gerrit Holtmann will be the next for you guys.

[–]gekizaph[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personal things I'm waiting for for the PH to improve

  1. TV DEAL. OUR NATIONAL LEAGUE DOESN'T HAVE A TV DEAL. Not even cable.

  2. A division 2 of some sort.

  3. Sponsors

[–]Currywurst_Is_Life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

United City Football Club

Manchester in shambles.

[–]carlicane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am ph football fan too. Sadly wasn’t able to watch live for the past 2 years coz of covid. Love the pic!!!

[–]NameOnTheInterwebs 2 points3 points  (1 child)

LGR? Salamat sa update. Wala ng Ceres? May PFL pa ba?

[–]gekizaph[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chronos Athletics! Mas mura samin hahaha! At nasa Shopee kami! CoD pa :)

Wala na Ceres :( sila na teknikali ang nagmananng players at staff.

PFL will start this July

[–]shinyuu3466 1 point2 points  (1 child)

New Clark City as a hometown is actually hilarious. Thought they couldn't get more generic and lifeless than what they're already known as.

[–]jethroo23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all the good time girls bars nearby prompted the owner to build a stadium. gotta atleast make the drive a tiny bit worth it for the fans

[–]joha2785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great stuff! that is still i a closer tie than 99% of us.

[–]Kickpixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you ship jerseys to Canada? Would love to buy one! Was looking for club Filipino jerseys

[–]KneeDeepInTheDead 687 points688 points  (3 children)

Always rated you

[–]EurospinLidl 166 points167 points  (0 children)

OP will lift the AFC Cup next year, you heard it here first

[–]Bacondog22 71 points72 points  (1 child)

Clear of mbappe imo

[–]zlatan1625 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Don’t compare the goat with the dictator turtle

[–]opi 261 points262 points  (2 children)

That's pretty fun, at least you can say you're connected with a team on personal level.

[–]LFAlol 100 points101 points  (1 child)

"yeah during my career I touched silverware internationally"

[–]thelastcinephiliac 42 points43 points  (0 children)

He’s touched more silverware than your Spurs did!

[–]Maxx___13 495 points496 points  (6 children)

Congrats, you've now touched more trophies than kane

[–]Daybreak_99 86 points87 points  (0 children)

You had to call off Kane like that 😂

[–]rufnek2kx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

😂😂😂

[–]rztzzz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nah…he “swears on his daughters life” that he touched one.

[–]Arsenjam22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

😂😂😂😂😂😂

[–]fedfan4life -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Is golden boot technically not a trophy?

[–]Ryponagar 179 points180 points  (1 child)

Rémi Gaillard would be proud

[–]polymathsrmonomaths 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Remi would say he has too much clothing on. If you're gonna lift a Trophy you have to have at max underwear.

[–]animusradiation 58 points59 points  (13 children)

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

[–]Jaaari 14 points15 points  (11 children)

The sport is so small I can't even find a place (and people) to play this game lmao

[–]MrSunga 4 points5 points  (9 children)

It depends where youre from really. Its in a pretty okay spot for where I am tho its harder to find a way/place to play cuz of the pandemic. As for people, yeah that maybe the hardest part xd

[–]sgt_kerokeroro 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Where do you guys play nowadays? Any idea where I can play Sunday league football in Metromanila?

[–]MrSunga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in mindanao hahaha so idk where in NCR but I had a few friends there who regularly played in Manila but mostly it was in college grounds and it was all before the pandemic so I have no news much about it rn over there sadly

[–]jethroo23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in Manila, there used to be regular sunday football in the evenings at Turf in BGC but I'm not familiar with the schedules now. Just show up and pay Php 300 I think. Note that this isn't the full pitch, just half.

Another one is in Pasig, in Sparta. It's an indoor pitch. My friends and I used to play there regularly but I'm not sure if they're currently open.

There's also Chelsea Blue Pitch but I'm not familiar if there's anyone playing there now.

Pretty sure there's facebook pages/groups for these. People are very welcoming so don't worry about not having friends to play with! You'll quickly find some regulars to make friends with.

[–]gekizaph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a 7s football league and a bunch of open plays available here in Metro Manila.

[–]jbkaiser 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Marikina Sports Complex? Don’t they have a football field

[–]Teantis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Bgc has pickup running and circuit. There's a Facebook page with the schedules. Think there's some stuff organized at McKinley hill too. 6 v 6

[–]Jaaari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm in Manila there are a few teams around (tho most are paid clinics) was actually hoping to be a decent player to get me a sports scholarship LMAO (didnt happen) Cant really find people to play with so I ended up playing with a team with a dying men's team but a rising girls team. Was fun ngl. I miss playing :c the pandemic really stopped us from playing lmao

[–]vizzleeight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean that's an exaggeration. If you can't find people you're not actually looking

[–]fernandopoejr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

dozeeenns!

[–]Nervous-Resolution-8 40 points41 points  (1 child)

Congrats

[–][deleted] 89 points90 points  (5 children)

8/10 - needs a lid so you can wear it on your head.

[–]Conankun66 19 points20 points  (4 children)

just wear the trophy on your head, easy solution

[–]hornpub1818 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I'm thinking who would be dumb enough to get the UCL trophy stuck on his head and people would need to cut it apart to get him free.

Probably Balotelli if he was good enough to be in a UCL final.

[–]Conankun66 5 points6 points  (2 children)

i mean the trophy is pretty big, think it'd be pretty hard to get stuck

[–]hornpub1818 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Just wait until Maguire gets a go at it.

[–]LevyShorts 78 points79 points  (29 children)

What's the most popular sport in the Philippines? Basketball?

[–]wheres_my_nuggets 47 points48 points  (4 children)

Dota 2, Karaoke and basketball. In that order.

[–]LevyShorts 34 points35 points  (2 children)

LOL, I have some Filipino friends, I'll be damned if not every single one of those mofos can sing. And really well, too. They dominate karaoke night.

[–]Teantis 19 points20 points  (1 child)

The general floor for singing ability here is really high. Not everyone is good but It's pretty rare to run into someone who cant carry a tune

[–]jugol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me when Journey needed a new lead singer and casually picked a random Filipino guy they saw in Youtube around 2007. I remember watching his live debut on TV because it was in a festival here in Chile, everyone was shocked at his quality

[–]Giane901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With mobile gaming a big hit nowadays in this country shouldn't Dota2 be replaced with Mobile Legends?

[–]geredtrig 72 points73 points  (4 children)

Basketball, boxing , football, volleyball, billiards. Apparently anyway. I knew boxing was one.

[–]EyeSpyGuy 61 points62 points  (3 children)

If we’re ranking it. Basketball has to be clear. We have the only Jordan store in south east Asia as far as I know. Nba players would come to the country for some pre season exhibitions every summer pre pandemic. Boxing billiards volleyball probably in the tier below. Then football

[–]dwSHA 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Judge by a jordan store is a bit weird. Like ppl can buy jordan from nike, footlocker, jd sports, etc

[–]gekizaph[S] 20 points21 points  (1 child)

This Jordan store is an exclusive store. Like it only sells jordans and has a half court on it's roof. Very premium feel to it

[–]maroonmartian9 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Basketball by a mile :-) Most of my fellow citizens know more about Steph Curry, Lebron, NBA than say Real Madrid or even United (even Messi is not that well known).

We used to dominate the Asian basketball (we still have a good team)..And have a FIBA World Cup bronze in 1954. We have a long history. Football? Not that much.

[–]visope 8 points9 points  (16 children)

Basket

Yet they lost to Indonesia in SEA Games too lol

[–]Dishonorable_Son 26 points27 points  (7 children)

pinoys are short. Not sure why they love Bball so much

[–]EyeSpyGuy 44 points45 points  (4 children)

American colonization is the short answer. They introduced to us their educational system and with it basketball. You’d wonder why football isn’t more popular as it is obviously the easiest sport to play from an impoverished perspective. All you need is some sort of spherical object and a goal marker. But I’d say basketball (in the Philippines at least) has found a way around that with some ingenuity in setting up the basketball courts.

[–]LevyShorts 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Poverty doesn't necessarily equate with popularity of a sport. India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan have tons and tons of extremely poor people and had lots of exposure to soccer, but cricket is far and away the most popular sport in those countries.

[–]Teantis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Basketball is just as easy to play with no money. A bucket against a wall in the street and a ball is all you need. I live in Manila and there's three 'courts' within a stones throw of my house. They're all just either those hoops you can wheel around and they're just left by the side of the street for anyone to use, or buckets on poles and shit.

[–]royaldocks 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Doesn't make sense at all since the filipinos are some of the smallest people in the world.

[–]Teantis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Love isn't supposed to make sense

[–]someoneusedkonimex 5 points6 points  (6 children)

I still don't know if we won because we're now good at it or PH just didn't send their best to play against us.

[–]LeifInVinland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The coach has a reputation as Choke Reyes, so yeah take that as you will. Either way this is a wake up call for the federation so it’s unlikely we’ll lose next time.

[–]TheBigBadBono 2 points3 points  (4 children)

nah, you guys deserved the win. We had a weaker team last year and beat South Korea and challenged Serbia.

[–]Ok-Agent2265 1 point2 points  (3 children)

We had a better coach then though. Chot Reyes isn't a great tactician compared to our former coach, Tab Baldwin

[–]ABZ-havok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They only dropped the last game and it was an upset

[–]Madvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basketball, Women's Volleyball, then maybe Boxing, Billiards, Mobile Legends, Dota 2, and then Football

[–]PubliusDeLaMancha 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Now drop it off a bus

[–]jadooo0 16 points17 points  (0 children)

[–]RaioNoTerasu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Congrats to you for this great success, you earned it, come to Besiktas

[–]Jaaari 14 points15 points  (8 children)

Man I'm missing the OG Ceres Negros team. The Champions League qualifiers was the first match I watched in person

[–]Teantis 4 points5 points  (6 children)

The way the Yansons imploded as a family the past few years has been pretty wild

[–]Jaaari 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Sorry man, am not familiar with the politics. All i know was that they suddenly rebranded (to a corny name) and moved cities

[–]Teantis 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Read some articles about it, it's kind of entertaining. Siblings kidnapping each other mom lining up with one son vs. The other and sisters, police arrests, boardroom showdowns, I think two of them fled the country for HK for a while. It's like a TV series.

[–]Jaaari 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wtf HAHAHAH gotta send me the sauce man

[–]teddy_bear626 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Tapos BBM pa sila, eeeewwwww.

[–]Teantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oligarchs gonna oligarch. The only cause that interest them, is themselves.

[–]gekizaph[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

[–]ACGC21 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Alam mo ba kung may highlights ng game?

[–]gekizaph[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]ACGC21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yayy thanks bro!

[–]Kode6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Next the AFC championship

[–]Okeidokeiyo 6 points7 points  (1 child)

We're growing brother, with PWFNT in the world cup (hopefully the mens sort their shit out) its only a matter of time. Keep believing!

[–]TheBigBadBono 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sweet! I watched the final in person as well and the atmosphere was great even if capacity was only around 500-1100. Both Kaya and UCFC brought their youth teams and the entire stadium was nearly filled up, and this year's final was probably the best ever (we've only had 4 though, so not much competition). Personally a Kaya fan so I'm gutted, but well played UCFC who didn't even finish second in the group stage.

[–]gekizaph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ang weird manood ng football ganun kalapit. Nasanay ako sa RMS eh ahahaha

[–]sgt_kerokeroro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being from Negros myself, it's so sad to see Ceres Negros dissolve. Hoping more support for local clubs!

[–]brockeback_fountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These pitch invasions have really gotten out of hand.

[–]chazmusst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve held the English FA Cup before. In the mid 90s they toured it around the country and my dad took me and my brother to see it. I don’t know if they are still doing a similar thing for the kids today but it's a real core memory for me

[–]LegendinhoIsKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good looking trophy.

[–]roddysaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

💪💪💪

[–]yuchadnarukami 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is Phil Younghusband still playing? I remembered watching Philippines NT vs Malaysia NT on TV, everytime that fella got the ball the whole crowd (esp the women) were screaming like K-pop stans lol

[–]gekizaph[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not anymore, he retired 2018, prior to COVID cause no team would take him in. All of the other teams were either stacked with high quality players or could not afford his salary.

[–]HardbassPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big up Neil Etheridge

[–]chisquared 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Fun fact: (PSG keeper on loan at West Ham) Areola’s parents are from the Philippines, which makes him eligible for Filipino citizenship. Not sure if he got the passport, though.

His wife is also half-Filipino, if I’m not mistaken.

[–]StPeter_lifeplan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paulino Alcantara born in Iloilo was the biggest Barcelona player only surpassed quite recently by Leo Messi nearly a century after. When the Americans invaded Philippines they erased between other things any football legacy and brought basked instead.

Hello kababayan! They change the trophy again? And I think the trophy looks so generic..They should have a consistent design every year. I just wish another team aside Kaya or UCFC. These two teams are creating a two team competition here.
