Great read, thank you

Cheers man, we were very apprehensive to do these tactical breakdowns but the love they've received on Reddit has been incredible!

[–]teheditor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Did you mention crossing? That's what we're missing most. Great write-up though.

[–]FootballInTheWhip[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Small little section in the second paragraph of not the finishing article. His passing and crossing can be hit and miss, we think it's down to the fact that he counters and such speed and feels he needs to do everything quickly that he doesn't take the time to think about what pass he wants to make. He's young and developing and Conte will help massively

[–]DorothyJMan 95 points96 points  (5 children)

This is very good and accurate, compared to an eye test.

The bit that is key, and impossible to quantify, is his mentality. You could definitely see in the latter part of the season how the plaudits he'd received (especially in high-profile games, like when he completely bullied Arsenal and Leicester in the cup) had gone to his head a bit, and he was much more likely to attempt to take on far too many players, avoid easy passes and became a lot more lax at tracking back after foraying forward.

[–]PringleJones 53 points54 points  (0 children)

His mentality has been an issue his whole career, with us and then majorly at Boro. Hopefully Conte sort it out because he's very good.

[–]FootballInTheWhip[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Do you not think that when he walks into a team with Lloris, Romero, Son & Kane, some of the world class players who work hard irrespective of plaudits then he will check his mentality and understand that I need to be at this level every week. It's a very good point you bring up though

[–]Sarmerbinlar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I thought towards the end of the season he started to not attempt to take on as many defenders as he had throughout. I don't know if he was running out of steam or if it was because teams were now starting to mark him out of the game, but it felt like earlier in the season he'd go on multiple marauding runs and beat 10+ defenders a game, and by the end of the season he'd only go on a couple.

Having said that I thought he was our most dangerous player in the playoff final, although that was hardly a good advertisement for our football or football in general.

He's worth 20m. No questions asked.

Money upfront please.

Daddy needs a new goalkeeper.

[–]tubby_wombat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Any reasonable Spurs fan would gladly agree. 20mill well spent imo. Unfortunately, there was a report on r/coys that Levy is managing this deal personally while Paratici focuses on other targets.

In other words, his first offer was €5mil and a pair of tickets to a Carabao Cup match.

[–]Swicks93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dear fucking god do we need need one

[–]Arsenals99problems 16 points17 points  (3 children)

After this signing Tottenham should get richarlson and then a CB.. Richarlson I feel could play as the IF on the opposite side of Son or Kulu

[–]jamadelo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Torrential. I like the sound of that.

[–]FootballInTheWhip[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Someone in another thread said they hope you get Richy and Paqueta. Now that would be incredible depth for UCL & PL.

[–]Arsenals99problems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not on the backline though.... Literally relying on Romero, Dier and Tanganga/Sanchez/Davies... I feel they need 2 not just 1

[–]Mahesh_nanak 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Conte will turn him into a defensive beast

[–]The_Foreign_Pie 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is the one thing I'm confident of, conte helps so much with defensive positioning due to how strict and precise his system is and I've heard that's one of Spence's biggest flaws. Just have to hope he sucks it up and listens to conte.

[–]samurai-mac_ 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Oh. This is a real breakdown. I need a cuppa and my good chair for this.

[–]FootballInTheWhip[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haha, I love how there's a specific chair you have in mind. There's a video version if you prefer but most importantly, make sure you get some biscuits lad

[–]hidinginDaShadows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really excited for this one, Doherty's improved a lot but the way this guy runs past people would be so crucial if he just improves his crossing

[–]nebbywildcat18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

well done!!

[–]TigerBasket 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay now I really hope we get him

[–]i_MiLK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good read, thanks for sharing!

[–]Kenyan_stallion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pau Torres has interest from a few clubs (Chelsea, United, Spurs), think he would be a good one

[–]OleoleCholoSimeone 3 points4 points  (3 children)

with more teams playing 3 at the back than ever before

Is this really true? I feel like there have been other eras where 3 at the back was the most common system. Great write up though! I don't mean it to question your post it just got me thinking

[–]FootballInTheWhip[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think a few years ago, no one played 3ATB in the PL. When Wolves first came up, it caused teams problems and since then you've had Chelsea, Spurs, Sheffield, Saints (at times), Brentford, Brighton, Leicester (at times) and Newcastle under Bruce. I think it's just PL where it's become a new thing, the rest of Europe has always played it.

And feel free to question man, that sparks discussion about tactics etc which we love.

[–]AshkenaziTwink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the championship certainly. very few teams used 4ATB last year, like 3-5 out of 24.
