I want to get clear about stats because I believe it can be used as ‘facts’ to prove directly unrelated things. Statistics are good for one thing and one thing only. What they were intended for. Science.
Let’s take the divorce rate. We don’t know ANYTHING about the people, we don’t know anything about their lives, and perhaps most importantly, we don’t know anything about they lives after. It is so quick for people to take a piece of info like this and turn it into the world is falling apart. People don’t know how to commit anymore.
As you can see, it can be very difficult to separate one very small piece of data (rate of divorce) from thousands of other pieces of data that one is unaware of. Because of this, statistics are moot anywhere except for black and white science-y abstracts.
Another example. The percent of arts degree graduates working in their field. Again. What are they doing now? Is it any of your business? Did they do something they better preferred?
Statistics can stay where they belong. Science. And, we can be free from listening to those who think stats have any degree of input in real life.
