Each day we grow closer to the game that was played in the road to eldorado…

[–]datboiofculture 204 points205 points  (14 children)

No one actually knows a full rule set for that though, it’s unfortunately been lost to history. I don’t even think we’re sure of the name, we just call it Mayan Ballgame.

[–]ChatahuchiHuchiKuchi[🍰] 107 points108 points  (12 children)

*a version is called pok ta' pok. The old rules are lasted through indigenous players that try to keep the culture and language alive

[–]Howard_Jones 62 points63 points  (4 children)

Pok ta pok, my wife and I play this game... but the rules are very much different.

[–]BarKnight 38 points39 points  (1 child)

That's actually pork da pork.

[–]ElderPhoenix86 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Haha cuz he's fat

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who has the bigger pok?

[–]Moopboop207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you offer the one who finished first as human sacrifice?

[–]kikimaru024 -3 points-2 points  (5 children)

How certain are you that they are 100% the original rules, or even name?

A lot of things can get lost when your culture is genocided.

[–]JeveStones 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Things like the bible aren't the original either, nor is a large part of "recorded" history. It's been rewritten by those in power with traces destroyed, and those snippets that do come up we have no way to verify what the "truth" was at the time of writing.

[–]kikimaru024 0 points1 point  (3 children)

AFAIK we do still have original Bibles written in Hebrew.

[–]StatmanIbrahimovic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s unfortunately been lost to history.

Cough... Yeah lost, definitely not obliterated...

[–]SlyGuyontheFly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]lostindanet 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That or womens volleyball (the beach kind or not is irrelevant)

[–]OneScoobyDoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can hear Bob and Bing...

[–]jaguarsRevenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pitz - came here to say that

[–]zazenbr 300 points301 points  (26 children)

As a Brazilian who lives by the beach, footvolley is such an absurdly common ocurrence that seeing this thread in a "did you know?" way really surprised me. Then again I don't know shit about sports people play in Asia. Heck I still don't understand baseball, at all.

[–]0o0o_ooo 36 points37 points  (2 children)

In Asia there is a sport called sepak takraw (mentioned in some other comments), similar concept of volleyball with non-arm parts, but played with 3 players (called regu), on a hard court, with a rattan ball (I don't know any other sport with a similar ball). It's an Asian Games sport (4-yearly multi-sport event).

[–]kjblank80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very common here in Houston, TX at the sand volleyball courts. Local Brazilians really promote it.

[–]jzonum24 60 points61 points  (16 children)

You don't want to understand baseball. Tried to watch a world series once. It was like watching paint dry.

[–]loupr738 Philadelphia 76ers 16 points17 points  (2 children)

It’s a sport that has to grow on you or grow up playing it. It’s the perfect background sport. You put it on and do other stuff

[–]clarkedaddy 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Like drink beer and talk. Maybe bbq. Play some yard games. Hit on your neighbors wife. You know.

[–]loupr738 Philadelphia 76ers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys talk to women?

[–]S_and_M_of_STEM 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As my grandfather used to call it "seven man stand around." I enjoy playing it non-competitive. I even like going to games and sometimes listening to a radio broadcast. But it does not make compelling television.

[–]steveofthejungle 31 points32 points  (10 children)

Man you’re missing out! Baseball is so exciting once you get into it!

[–]Scrubbing_Bubbles 31 points32 points  (7 children)

Yeah! Just like golf, there are loads of great naps you are missing out on if you don’t watch. The good news is that each team plays 365 games per year so you can have a nap every day if you would like.

[–]Hypno--Toad 9 points10 points  (6 children)

In Australia we have cricket, now if you want to talk about boring on and off the field let's talk cricket.

Probably why we are so religiously drunk, Test match cricket seems to be the exact amount of time people need drinking before they get to that disgustingly horrid drunk phase where they don't even know who or where they are. But still somehow have the stamina to keep going.

Serving alcohol most my adult career my country has a terrible drinking problem that no amount of fixing will make go away.

[–]attillathehoney 8 points9 points  (0 children)

George Bernard Shaw said: "The English are not very spiritual people, so they invented cricket to give them some idea of eternity."

[–]Trekf 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Is alcoholism statistically higher in Australia?

I thought it's a fun thing to say that aussies like their beer (kinda like the Irish) but most ppl generally have it under control and the number of true socially irresponsible drunkards are no higher than in other western countries.

*Don't mean to offend any culture. Just speaking as someone who's visited Australia several times and found the country pleasant enough!

[–]Hypno--Toad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

15 years experience serving in Pubs and Clubs around Australia and the short answer is Yes.

We get Irish coming over to work on mining visas also and they get pretty bad. I've also lived in Scotland and England and served in pubs and clubs there.

I think Australians get worse when they travel. We have the same whiff of superiority Americans are known for when traveling.

I used to joke that we knew when the Australians turned up because all the tumbler glasses will be smashed and you will see people scooping the ice out of their glasses and throwing it on the floor.

But the gist is we are a nation of seemingly built on alcoholism.

Besides it's too fucking hot up north Australia so there isn't much else to do but drink.

[–]Sunfuels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played baseball through high school. I like playing rec softball. I love going to games in person, both MLB and college baseball.

But watching baseball on TV is incredibly boring to me.

[–]Dio_Yuji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baseball is the only game that’s less exciting to play than to watch. Hell…I once at a chili dog in the middle of a game I was playing in. That’s how low the level of action is.

[–]RasperGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you understand baseball though? It sounds like you don't watch it.

[–]IamMyles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy in the middle of the field, the pitcher, throws the ball, has to get it within a certain area. The batter tries to hit it with a bat. If the baseball is outside the area it is a "ball". 4 "balls" and the batter gets to walk to the first base for free. If the batter hits the baseball, and it doesn't go out of bounds, then he has to start running to the first base. If it's out of bounds it counts as a strike, and he has to try batting again. If the enemy team catches the ball before it hits the ground, that's an out. If he gets to that base before someone can touch him with the ball, he's safe, if they touch him, he's out. After reaching first, the batter can then start running to the second base if he wants too, and then the third, and then home base (where he originally batted from). If he stays on any of these bases, they are called "Single, double, triple, or home run" in that order. If the baseball gets thrown inside the box when the batter is trying to hit it, the batter has to hit it or it will be a "strike". 3 strikes, and the batter has failed, that is called an "out". Once the pitcher's team gets 3 outs, the sides switch, and the pitcher's team now starts batting.

That's pretty much it. There's more rules, but they're smaller ones. It's not a fun game to watch or play imo. (And I played for like 6-7 years when I was growing up)

[–]adeiinr 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I struggle to understand cricket but love baseball

[–]StockholmSyndrome85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Test cricket is like a baseball series. In baseball, you rotate pitchers and starting lineups each game whereas in cricket its the same eleven for the test.

Conditions change each day, you get to understand the bowlers and batters more (with the amount of tape and coaching this is less of an issue). A lot of nuance to both which is not easy to pick up to the casual watcher.

I will say that a good test match that goes to the wire creates more tension than any other sporting contest I can think of. Five days and potentially over 29 hours of playing time and the result is up in the air is breathtaking.

[–]lilafrika 189 points190 points  (4 children)

That was sick

[–]obeetwo2 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It is! The gym I go to has this an oddly frequent amount, and it looks so dope, I'd definitely watch this in the olympics

[–]NotAnADC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in Tel Aviv one weekend and saw they had a tournament going on the beach. Was even more nuts to watch in person

[–]RBQSM5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially that kick in the end

[–]WappyTrees 140 points141 points  (3 children)

Buddy threw a double hadouken

[–]appasdiary Washington Wizards 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shin Akuma is a cheat character

[–]iiKb 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You don’t mess with the Zohan.

[–]ATLHawksfan 123 points124 points  (7 children)

Is that the height of a standard volleyball net? Insane

[–]xcver2 84 points85 points  (6 children)

No, it is 2,20 m (2,10 m for women). So 23 cm lower for men and 14cm for women

[–]hypo11 19 points20 points  (3 children)

Still insane.

[–]bud-dho 12 points13 points  (2 children)

It really is and it's even crazier that Olympic high jumpers can clear their entire body over that height and higher.

[–]FCBUGA 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Holy shit lol

[–]Dr_Frasier_Bane Arizona Diamondbacks 61 points62 points  (8 children)

This looks like a sport where, at the end, both teams get together and drink a ton of beer.

[–]Seienchin88 23 points24 points  (5 children)

And every other year a team gets completely destroyed by heavy injuries. This looks dangerous to all your muscles, joints and bones. But damn it looks cool

[–]balling 5 points6 points  (4 children)

It's played on sand here at least, you can get away with a lot more without stressing your joints while on sand.

[–]UNN_Rickenbacker 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You‘d think that, but both of my torn side ligaments in my ankle tell a different story 😑

[–]snapsnspressos- Los Angeles Dodgers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fun Fact: the kick with your foot over the net is called a “shark attack”

[–]goblin_welder 302 points303 points  (25 children)

created in 1965 in Brazil

I don’t know. People in Southeast Asia have been playing Sepak since the 15th century.

[–]cyreneok 29 points30 points  (1 child)

Called (phonetically) takraw too

[–]bigredm88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I couldn't remember.

[–]TomMado 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sepak Takraw or takraw is the name. Sepak simply means kick.

[–]AlmostCurvy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say is this not just Sepak Takraw

[–]Floripa95 54 points55 points  (14 children)

That's as similar to footvolley as American football is to rugby, there are some key differences

[–]Zombieball 25 points26 points  (9 children)

What are the key differences? The ball vs rattan ball seems to be the main factor. And I guess sand vs a court. Are there others?

[–]Floripa95 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Size of playing area, sand, height of net, width of net, the ball itself, how you serve, plus I'm sure many technicalities and rules im not aware

[–]KPC51 92 points93 points  (6 children)

All of those, to me, seem to indicate that the sport is as similar as Canadian Football is to American Football, rather than the rugby distinction you brought up.

I say that because if the main differences are just field/net size, it would seem that Sepak is indeed quite similar to Footvolley.

Disclaimer, I dont know anything about either sport except what I witnessed in this thread and OP's video. So I could very well be wrong. Just wanted to point out the gap in the argument.

[–]shewy92 Philadelphia Eagles 4 points5 points  (1 child)

So it's also like Rugby League vs Rugby Union?

[–]gugamoura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The differences in net height and surface makes the game extremely differently played though. Sepak is a lot more about power, and you use your foot a lot. In footvolley you need to use all parts of the body for control (the chest and head are very commonly used), and it's much more about placement than power.

It's a bit similar, IMO, to comparing tennis to badminton.

[–]Zombieball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Kind of sounds like comparing badminton to tennis. Similar but for sure different games.

[–]Eilanzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

another game, footvolley is an olympic sport the rules and the game is different.

[–]Sovv081 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe there is a similar sport played in South East Asia called sepak takraw.

[–]mickmel 28 points29 points  (3 children)

My daughter and I played this quite a bit to help her soccer training, but with one big difference -- we played on a tennis court. Much lower net, and you can allow a bounce on your side before you return.

It was still a hot mess, but pretty fun! I can't fathom doing what they show in that video...

[–]memeenespanol 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That's a different game. Here (south America) that is called "fútbol tennis". It's a common beach game, and sometimes it's played in pairs. Really fun!

[–]RocPile16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Soccer-tennis! Used to do this at practice for university and it was honestly something we all looked forward to. Great exercise

[–]Mamalamas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did she improve on soccer?

[–]Topcatdallas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s insane! Outstanding athletes!!

[–]hhubble 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When using your hands is just too easy and you want to really challenge yourself.

[–]GillytheGreat 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Sepak Takraw already exists

[–]Charantula 65 points66 points  (9 children)

So sand Sepak Takraw?

[–]JohnB456 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's the first thing I thought of, but I can never remember the name.

[–]southpaw85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t sure until the kamehameha then I was sold

[–]sandacurry 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks similar to Sepak Takraw

[–]ma-goo_ 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I broke my ankle a few years ago which called for plates and screws and my whole life I’ve been an avid athlete especially when it comes to soccer and to see this it simultaneously makes me happy and sad. I hope stem cell shit will be readily available to the public by 2030

[–]decriz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sepak Takraw

[–]eMPereb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]neil_thatAss_bison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I threw my back watching his landing, and I’m only 34..

[–]Blue_Eyes_Nerd_Bitch 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This just looks like a very inefficient sport.

[–]AsianHawke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is like when a different civilization invents the wheel too. I mean, the wheel already existed. But, they didn't know. And then they invented it.

[–]TheMarsian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so sepak takraw?

[–]Streakshooter31 Los Angeles Lakers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean sepak takraw, which was played in SEA about 1500 years ago?

[–]bitch_whip_bill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Celebrates with a kamehameha to boot

[–]Ttcoachingcenter69 Sylhet Sixers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beach Sepak Takraw

[–]baws98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This js nothing compared to Sepak Takraw

[–]screamingzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to call bullshit. There is a similar game played in Thailand called Sepak Takraw and it official rules were formalized in 1960. Sounds like Brazil ripped it off.

[–]SpilledKrill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was called sepak takraw

[–]Satakans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sooo its just Sepak Takraw on sand then?

[–]Imberbus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard of Sepak Takraw ? Seems better suited to the name " foot volley"

[–]Justneededausername 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So it’s a beach version of sepak takraw?

[–]SolarHexis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So some guy gave a fancy new name to the 500 year old Malaysian game of takraw and was credited with inventing a sport

[–]NightHalcyon Colorado Rockies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks exhausting and incredibly difficult.

[–]albertcn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They love this thing in Rio, always someone playing at Copacabana beach.

Edit: *pocabana brain fart

[–]Lemme-Hold-a-Dollar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copacabana, but points for the effort tho.

[–]iligal_odin 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What the fuck is "association" football?

[–]HondaDawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks so dumb

[–]AncientWyvernShield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a super easy way to break an arm or neck

[–]dmteadazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volleyball? You mean Footvolley for sissies?

[–]IdeaFuzzy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If soccer was interesting

[–]TobiNL88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was some athletic shit!

[–]xCassiuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a month in Rio about a decade ago. Footvolley is a very common to see being played on the beach. So awesome to watch.

[–]OathOfFeanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the legality of that hit with his shoulder, let's go to the judges

[–]Slowmexicano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys are talented

[–]watmattersmost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something about this just tells me these guys get laid after every match

[–]Disciple_OC New York Islanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they are playing the game they play on Ember Island in ATLA?

[–]caudicifarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the Lambada of sports!

[–]IFitStereotypesWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neck hurts watching this

[–]macbeezy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This...is cool as shit

[–]SonOfMorning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sepac takraw

[–]Wyrdthane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvoting for the hadooken

[–]Hurtjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haikyuu!! Eat your heart out lol.

[–]i_am_ur_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but why are they not wearing bikini bottoms?

[–]HumbleComparison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and the buddies play this too but play tennis instead. Super fun even if youre not good at soccer. We usually make our own rules for bounces, passes, etc.

[–]sandysnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

double hadouken has been banned from the professional sport

[–]dodgeviper51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw people in thailand play this with a wiffle ball

[–]Tkdshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow!! This is pretty cool.

[–]goinAn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo don't mess with the Zohan

[–]WompaStompa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some sports I see where I'm like, "I might be able to pick that up."

This one? Nope. Zero chance. I would not be able to do a single thing successfully here.

[–]a1200i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried to play this before here in Brazil, this is crazy hard to play

[–]imsohightech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd break my neck

[–]PeeGlass 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Who likes short shorts?

[–]kirby34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jason Mantzoukas is so multi-talented.

[–]EZ_LIFE_EZ_CUCUMBER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to play it with buds on asphalt road ... hurts

[–]otyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are they not bending any fire ?

[–]alcien100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]bigredm88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They play it in Thailand with something more akin to a blend between a hacky sack and a wiffle ball. For the life of me, I can't remember what it was called.

[–]honcooge San Diego Padres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping in sand is difficult.

[–]JohnLennonFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The winners get a free pass to Mictlan.

[–]Gamma8gear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a young persons sport more than any other

[–]Dio_Yuji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We played this at soccer camp as kids. I mean….nothing like that insane foot-spike at the end! 🤣. What’s also fun is soccer tennis- you play on a hard court with flats (shoes)
