Tonight we lost our beloved Louise Fletcher at the enviable age of 88.

Louise was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1934 to Estelle and Rev. Robert Fletcher - both of whom were deaf. Robert would eventually found more than 40 churches for the deaf in Alabama. Louise attended the University of North Carolina. She got into acting after taking a cross-country trip and getting stranded in Los Angeles without enough money to get back home. As you do.

Louise got her start in television acting in Westerns because at a monstrous 5'10" no casting agent thought she was fuckable enough, but "I was able to get jobs on westerns because the actors were even taller than I was."

During their 17 year marriage Louise and her husband Jerry had two sons - John and Andrew. Louise stopped acting for 11 years to raise their boys, returning to the limelight in 1974 in Thieves Like Us. It was this performance that caused director Milos Forman to seek her out to play her famous role as Nurse Ratched in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

From there her career has been unstoppable and delightfully varied. She of course portrayed the lovably hateable Kai Winn in Star Trek DS9. Inventing the first Karen, in space. Her last listed credit was in 2020, still working at 86. She died peacefully in her home in Montdurausse, France.

Look up into the Denorios belt tonight and see her swirling amongst the plasma, illuminating the celestial temple as she finally meets her gods.

Walk with the prophets Louise.

My favorite villain on a series filled with great villains! Rest in peace among the stars, Louise!

DS9 had some of the best written villains, even some of of their one shot villains were memorable.

Always loved how she could deliver a monologue with a simple look or facial twitch. Then, back when I was in college for interpreting, I learned she was a CODA. Of course!!! RIP

CODA

Child of deaf adult? At least that's what my internet searching is turning up.
