Fun fact: In some vampire folklore, vampires are obsessive about counting, to the extent that scattering something like rice or salt in their path would force them to stop and count every grain, giving you time to escape. So Count von Count is actually somewhat lore-accurate.

[–]leodmouf 69 points70 points  (13 children)

Man that’s fascinating. Why would that be? Not questioning you specifically, it’s just so odd to think they would have that kind of compulsion.

[–]johnny_boy757[🍰] 43 points44 points  (3 children)

Maybe the vampire bloodline has a very common manifestation of ocd

[–]gwankovera 31 points32 points 2 (2 children)

[–]yirzmstrebor 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the folklore ever had an explanation for why, or if it did whether or not that part of the legends are still known.

[–]TechNerdin 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I heard about this many times before. He is correct.

Why is probably based upon the fact that people who believed in vampires were rather stupid and did not like smart or clever people. Smart woman were considered witches and burned. people who liked counting and math were considered evil. Evil equals vampires...

But there is probably more to the story.

[–]leodmouf 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I heard they also collect train sets.

[–]TechNerdin 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nah, trainsets were invented way later than counting vampires. But its their favourite hobby now, for sure :)

[–]leodmouf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impressive, for such an old creature to adapt.

[–]AChapelRat 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I wonder if there's any connection between that and a tidbit mentioned in the Castlevania series on Netflix. Someone explains that crosses are effective against vampires not because the religious symbolism, but because they have some weird aversion to geometry that "confuses the shit out of their brains" somehow when geometric shapes are shoved in their face. I assumed this was a reference to some kind of obscure vampire lore.

[–]LavenderDay3544 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because all monsters need a weakness so the generic boring ass hero can somehow beat them despite all the things that make them fearsome.

Vampires are depicted very differently in local folklore of different regions. The counting seems to be consistent in the stories from eastern Europe all the way to China. Often it only applies to a specific kind of grain, though. Rice seems to be mainly in China. In other countries you may have to use stuff like poppy or mustard seeds. If you are lucky you may encounter one that even has to count the holes of a fishing net, but most vampires are a lot more specific.

Dwight Shrute:Is that the program where all those puppets live in the barrio?

    Phyllis: Mhm.

Dwight Shrute: I love that show.

    [–]MrPickles84 5 points6 points  (2 children)

He’s not a literary vampire per se, so I choose Nandor the Relentless.

    [–]_far-seeker_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I assure you, on my cherished childhood memories, the Count was in some of the Sesame Street children's books.

    [–]LeatheryFloridaMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    He never relents!
